2017 JEEP CHEROKEE Electrical System Problems

When I turned the car off, the lights on the dashboard and ceiling stayed longer than the appropriate time. I went back to check and the dashboard went off but the ceiling stayed on. Next both lights were off but the dashboard came back on when I shut the door. It also randomly messages that the license plate light is out but works fine.

I bought a 2017 Jeep Cherokee latitude two weeks ago by the time I drove it home the service shifter light came on. I bought this car and it was certified free of defects this has happened a half a dozen times now I called the dealer and told them about it and I saw what the fix was online. The fixe is to put in a new shifter bezel and a new wiring harness. The dealer refuses to do this and the vehicle is certified what can I do?

Service Shifter Light on at 50,000 miles

I was driving like normal about 15 mph after just pulling out of the gas station onto the main road and have no issues with my car as of late and all of a sudden it just stopped. All the lights lite up on the shift, every light lite up on the dash saying everything needed to be serviced, I was unable to move or do anything with the car, not even turn it off and i was in the middle of the road! Luckily no one was behind me and I was still able to engage my hazards. After about 10 min's my car turned off on it's own. I sat for another 10 before finally being able to turn it back on and move it to the side of the road and eventually get it back to my house 2 miles away. Clearly this is a serious safety...

I started my vehicle and when I selected the drive gear all the red lights came on every gear. The service shifter warning came on the dash. I couldn’t move the vehicle for a week. The electronic parking brake start flashing on and off. I had this happen once before on vacation. I took it to the dealer in Vancouver Washington and they claim to have done a flash update, and took my brand new battery that was only three months old. Replaced it with the Mopar battery with less cold cranking amps, and charged me for it. Also, they refused to give me my battery back.

Car stalls without warning or indicator lights and will not restart in a safe manner. There are dozens of reports concerning this situation online and it is a SERIOUS safety issue that has received no attention. There is apparently and “incomplete” notice from JEEP that has failed to reach all customers. This has now happened to me three times — 2 of which were in situations that created significant safety risk.

My service shifter will lock up and the gear shift will read that my car is in park, reverse, neutral, drive all at the same time. My dash will read “service shifter” however it has been doing that since I purchased it. The wheels on the car will jerk and lock up. Luckily, I am not going fast and can safely pull over. The car will sputter and act like it is struggling to go. I have had everything checked and all other recalls fixed. When I mentioned it to the service department, they said they could replace the part but it doesn’t guarantee that it will fix the issue. While driving the warning chimed with a “service shifter” message on the dashboard screen. All of the lights (P, D, N, R) were light in the shift indicator. Due to the warning message I was not able to see any other information on my dash. I wasn’t sure if I could even keep driving leading me to panic for fear that I couldn’t even put the car in park. After some research I have come to find this is a recurring problem with 2014-2019 Jeep Cherokees. “Service Shifter” message appears and all gears (P, R, N, D, etc.) light up on the gear shift. I purchased my vehicle brand new and this has been happening since 28K miles. When I contacted the dealership, I was told it was not covered under warranty or a recall; it would cost about $400 with parts and labor to repair. I was also told if I did not repair it, that it could eventually turn into a safety hazard where my engine would lock up and stall and I would be stranded on the side of the road and it would not start up again. While driving the service shifter light pops on

On July 3, 2021 I stopped at STOP sign, then when I stepped on the gas car wasn't moving, when I looked at the gear shift I noticed all the lights are on, all P R N D AND "-" AND "+" NEXT TO THE GEAR (PICTURE ATTACHED). Then I stopped the engine and restarted the car to move on. On July 16, 2021 I took the car for oil change and showed the picture to the mechanic at the JEEP Service Center in Morgan Hill California (on Church Street in Morgan Hill, CA). The service guy said we know this problem it is a recall, he said it is wiring harness problem for the gear, he said they will fix it when they receive the part at no cost. Then, on July 26, 2021 I went back to see if they have received the part to fix the problem...

Service shifter warning. Car stalled twice. It has 45 k miles only. Won't start on first try.

My car completely cut off while driving it on 2 separate occasions on 6/14 & 6/29. I was going 15-20 mph and slowing down for a stop light both times. The car just cut off without any warning. Once I put it in park I was able to start it back up without a problem. I took it to get serviced and the shop said there were multiple faulty computer codes so they reset the system. They advised me to call the dealership to see if there is a recall. I called a dealership and there is not a recall. They told me to bring it in so they could do a diagnostic test and check the fuel system. The earliest appointment at 2 dealerships I called is a month out and if I scheduled a drop-off appointment that could be done in about 7-10 days.

SERVICE SHIFTER. The Shift Bezel keeps going out. I reading that is happening to a lot of other people only had this car 2 months. The gear shifter Bezel lights up all red and service shifter shows up on the dashboard.

Went to start my car and it didn't start. There was no cranking at all. Took it to the mechanic after jumping car. Mechanic called back few hours later. Said electrical is draing the power. Lucky I didn't loose my alternator. There was no one hurt and no sign of this happening before hand. Only the mechanic i took it too has checked it

At traffic stop light, vehicle transmission disengaged and acted as though in a neutral or park position even though shift position was in drive. Warning lights indicated "Service Shifter". Placed shifter into park and turned off engine. Restarted and placed shifter into drive. Appeared to drive normally to destination. Next engine start, warning indicator of Service Shifter returned with no apparent drive issues. Next engine start, warning indicator did NOT appear.

ENGINE WILL SHUT OFF, LOSE POWER STEERING, CANNOT ACCELERATE TO TRY TO GET OUT OF HARMS WAY, BATTERY, OIL AND ENGINE LIGHT WILL COME ON AND RECEIVE A MESSAGE SAYING TO "SHIFT TO PARK OR NEUTRAL TO START THE VEHICLE". IF YOU WANT A COUPLE MINUTES THE JEEP STRUGGLE TO TURNOVER BUT EVENTUALLY WILL. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND THIS VEHICLE NEEDS TO BE RECALLED IMMEDIATELY!!!! THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE!!! AFTER WHICH THE FIRST TEN MINUTES OF DRIVING IS ROUGH AND THE CAR SHIFTS BADLY. SOMETIMES ACCELERATION IS POOR AFTER. ALL LIGHTS ON THE SHIFTER TURN RED. VERY DANGEROUS

I HAVE HAD A THE VEHICLE LESS THAN 60 DAYS, AND THE SERVICE SHIFTER LIGHT CAME ON WHEN I STARTED THE VEHICLE, I DROVE HOME TURNED IT OFF AND THEN WHEN I RESTATED THE VEHICLE IT IS NO LONGER ON. DEALER IS UNAWARE OF ANY ISSUES AND HAS NEVER HEAD OF THIS, SO NOW I HAVE TO PAY FOR A DIAGNOSTIC AND ALL THE PARTS AND I DO HAVE EXTENDED WARRANTY BUT THIS IS NOT COVERED BY POWERTRAIN. THERE ARE OVER 600 COMPLAINTS FOR THIS ISSUE, AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE.

WHILE DRIVING AND TURNING RIGHT THE VEHICLE SHIFTED OUT OF GEAR TO NEUTRAL AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT ACTIVATED. ALSO, THE SERVICE AIR BAG, SERVICE SHIFTER AND THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. FURTHERMORE, ALL THE SHIFTER LIGHTS CAME ON. WHILE SITTING IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND ON TO RESET IT, THEN I WAS ABLE TO MOVE THE VEHICLE AND THE SERVICE SHIFTER LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR BACK TO MY HOUSE 5 MILES AWAY. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THE SERVICE SHIFTER LIGHT CAME ON. I HAVE A SCHEDULED DIAGNOSIS WITH MY DEALERSHIP'S SERVICE CENTER IN SEVEN DAYS. I MADE THE APPOINTMENT WHEN THE FIRST TIME THE SERVICE SHIFTER LIGHT CAME ON. THEY DID NOT ADVISE ME NOT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. BUT, AFTER THE LAST INCIDENT THE VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE.

WHILE DRIVING A LIGHT COMES ON AND SAYS TO SERVICE SHIFTER. EVERY TIME IT HAS COME ON, I PULL OVER AND TURN THE CAR OFF AND THEN IT WILL GO OFF. I'M WORRIED BECAUSE I'VE HEARD OTHERS AND THEIR BRAKES LOCKING UP AND GETTING INTO A WRECK...ON THE DASH READS PARK. WE HAVE ALSO HAD A LIGHT COME ON THE SPEEDOMETER THAT BLINKS AND THEN MAKES A LOUD BEEP BEEP BEEP. IT DOES GO OFF EVENTUALLY. THE WORST YET IS WHEN I WENT TO START THE CAR, THE BRAKE LOCKS UP AND IT WON'T START OR TURN OVER. WE HAD TO TOW IT TO A MECHANIC TO GET IT LOOKED AT. FINALLY AFTER TRYING MANY THINGS, HE REPLACED THE BATTERY AND IT BEGAN TO WORK. EVERY NOW AND THEN, IT DOES THE SAME THING, BUT IF I BREATHE JUST RIGHT IT STARTS.

PURCHASED 2017 JEEP CHEROKEE TRAIL HAWK NEW 10/2016. IF THE JEEP IS LEFT TO SIT 2 DAYS BATTERY WILL DRAIN AND NOT RESTART JEEP. I HAVE REPLACED THE BATTERY 3 TIMES. MOST RECENTLY 4-21-20. THIS NEW BATTERY KEEPS DRAINING AND 2ND TIME I HAVE HAD TO CALL TO HAVE IT RECHARGED. NOW BATTERY IS SHOWING BAD AND THEN OK. ALTERNATOR HAS DONE THE SAME BUT NOW SHOWING BAD. I THINK THERE IS ANOTHER ISSUE THAT KEEPS DRAINING BATTERIES. I ONLY HAVE 27,000 MILES ON JEEP.

THE HVAC MODULE STOPPED WORKING OUT OF NOWHERE. MY MILEAGE KEEPS FLASHING AND MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THERE WAS NO WARNING SIGN OF IT GETTING BAD IT JUST WOULDN'T COME ON AND I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY DIAG IT AND FOUND OUT WHAT IT WAS.

THE CAR STARTED OFF BY PROBLEMS WITH THE CHIP TO COMPUTE THAT IT NEEDED TO OPEN THE TEMPERATURE CONTROL VALVE. SO WITH THAT CAME THE INABILITY FOR ME TO START THE CAR BY BEING OUTSIDE OF IT AND ALSO THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON. THEN OUR GEARS WOULD LIGHT UP AS IF THE CAR WAS IN EVER POSITION POSSIBLE. WE WOULD PARK CUT THE CAR OFF AND RESUME TO DRIVE. THIS PROBLEM PERSISTED FOR A WEEK OR SO WENT AWAY AND EVENTUALLY CAME BACK. NOW THE ENGINE FEELS AS IF IT'S GIVING OUT IT DOESN'T ACCELERATE WELL, I KNOW IT'S A V4 BUT IT SHOULD HAVE MAINTAINED THE GET UP THE CAR HAS LESS THAN 50,000 MILES ON IT AND IS WELL MAINTAINED WITH FREQUENT OIL CHANGES WITH THE BEST OIL. CAR IS NEVER DRIVEN ON E OR ANYTHING I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THE CAR IS FAILING THIS...

THE SERVICE SHIFTER WARNING CAME UP WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET. THE VEHICLE HAS ROUGHLY 45000. NOTHING HAPPENED THIS TIME BUT I HAVE SEEN THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE AND CAN LEAD TO THE VEHICLE SHUTTING OFF IN MOTION.

ON OCTOBER 20, 2020, I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE JEEP DEALERSHIP WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED IN RESPONSE TO A 'SERVICE SHIFTER' WARNING INDICATOR. THE DEALERSHIP INDICATED THAT THE 'SHIFTER BEZEL AND WIRING HARNESS' WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AND COMPLETED THE REPAIR EARLIER TODAY AT A COST OF $325.88. DESPITE HAVING PURCHASED A SUPPLEMENTAL SERVICE PROTECTION PLAN THROUGH ASC, I WAS INFORMED THAT THE WARRANTY CLAIM HAD BEEN DENIED AS THE 'AGREEMENT DOES NOT HAVE COVERAGE ON WIRING OR WIRING HARNESSES' AND THAT 'THE BEZEL IS CONSIDERED A BODY PART BY THE MANUFACTURER WHICH IS NOT COVERABLE.' MOST DISTURBING, BASED UPON A REVIEW OF COMPLAINTS GENERATED FOLLOWING A GOOGLE SEARCH, THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM THAT HAS AFFECTED A NUMBER OF JEEPS SINCE AT LEAST 2014. SERVICE SHIFTER LIGHT COMES ON AND ALL THE SHIFTER LIGHTS LIGHT UP AND TURN RED

RANDOM AND INCONSISTENT SERVICE SHIFTER MESSAGE. SOMETIMES DISAPPEARS FOR MONTHS(THOUSANDS OF MILES). HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES IN TOTAL. VEHICLE HAS LESS THAN 30,000 MILES. PURCHASED BRAND NEW. ALWAYS WHILE DRIVING. NEVER WHILE IN PARK. SHIFTER INDICATOR LIGHTS UP READ AND ERROR DISPLAYED ON DASHBOARD.
