Car would not accelerate after getting on the interstate. Had to ease vehicle off exit ramp to side of road. Multiple engine lights on. Car would no longer start. Had independent mechanic shop evaluate as well as local Hyundai dealership. Both determined internal compression rod failure. Only solution is to replace engine. It is a 1.6L T for 2017 Tucson. The VIN for this car shows no engine recall but is the exact same issue that has resulted in Hyundai engine recall with the 2.0 vehicles.

Despite proper maintenance, at 100k miles the engine started knocking aggressively and the dealership advised me not to drive it or it would throw a rod in the very near future. It started burning oil around 80k miles. This is the Limited model with the gamma engine that was not included in the recalls of the other Tuscon engine, but seems to have the same problem.

The engine entered limp mode, lost oil pressure and began knocking. Vehicle was brought to a dealer where it remained for ~1 month. The dealer inspected the vehicle, and determined it to be a valve cover leak, which does not track given the issues. When picked up from the dealer, the engine seized shortly down the road. Upon my own inspection, it was found that the engine oil drain plug was missing. It is unclear if the dealer loosened the drain plug during their inspection, or if it fell out due to some other issue. In either case, the manufacturer and their representative (dealership) created a dangerous situation for the driver of that vehicle, which had to be pushed out of moving traffic during a busy time of day.

Within last oil change the engine had oil consumption and has a loud engine knocking sound. The upcoming oil change date had not been exceeded and/or miles had not been exceeded. The engine knock caused me to pull over immediately at a location on a highly traveled road and no shoulder or safe spot which was dangerous. Safety was a concern because I had to wait for a tow truck in cold winter weather. The local Hyundai dealership maintenance person said it was a known issue with that make and model and the repair wait time is 5 months because they don't have enough staff and cannot get parts. My tuscan just had an inspection at the last oil change on 10/22/2024. no report from Hyundai that the oil level was an issue or engine having problems. There not any warning lights or low level lights and/or noises until it...

Engine knocking began around 132,000 miles and caused intermittent loss of power while driving. This caused me to slow down at random intervals while on the roadway becoming a hazard for other drivers. Engine light activated shortly before the symptoms began. No inspections done yet.

Massive engine failure on well maintained vehicle. Vehicle has been inspected by two mechanics, one private and one dealership. Both recommend engine replacement.
#11637061 |
KSDS system continuously going off saying the knock sensor needs to be replaced and puts the car in limp mode. The car continuously going into limp mode even after knock sensor is replaced.

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that several months after purchasing the vehicle, the vehicle was shaking abnormally while started. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that there was an abnormal amount of carbon build up on the valves and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000.
#11635533 |
The transmission in my vehicle failed while driving and the car completely shut off while driving. Less than 4 months after replacing the transmission with a brand new transmission, the engine failed while driving on the highway. The engine started sputtering, then it started smoking, then the car stalled.

Greetings, I have had issues with the Hyundai Tucson 2017 I own for many months. Issues include among others an abnormal knocking noise from the engine, reduced engine power and/or hesitation, burning smell, oil leaking, and smoke coming out of the engine, misfires, and other issues. It happened many times on the highway and almost caused accidents and the last time it happened, the vehicle was towed, and recently the smoke coming from the engine forced me to pull over. I reported the issue to the dealer but they didn't recall or address the issue. The car has been maintained properly over time and now I fear for my life. It is totally unfair that about 100k of this brand have been recalled for the same issue, in my case it is just after I finished to pay in full the vehicle. I seek your support to have it addressed...

I am constantly having to add oil to my car. It burns oil. It is not leaking oil. I have 81000 miles on my car. I get my oil changed regularly.

My check engine light randomly started blinking and lost power. While driving
#11631951 |
My car hesitates when leaving a stop sign or light. It is random and I have no power to continue. If I put car in park than go sometimes it works, sometimes push down on gas more or sometimes I have to turn car off than back on. 2 near miss accidents

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The contact was able to pull to the shoulder of the roadway, where the failure persisted. The battery warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the spark plugs. The vehicle was repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V727000 (Engine); but the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was 86,000.

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of engine oil. The contact stated that the oil level was extremely low. The contact added oil and stated that frequent oil changes were needed. There was no indication of an oil leak. While driving over a bridge, the vehicle failed to accelerate over 25 MPH. The check engine and oil warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V727000 (Engine). The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who determined that oil was being burned by the piston rings. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who performed an oil consumption test. The dealer informed the contact that there was an oil leak. The vehicle then failed to start. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no additional assistance...

I was driving on [XXX] and the acceleration just started to drastically slow down. I was able to get to the shoulder where the car completely died and wouldn’t cut back on and I had it towed to South Bay Hyundai in Torrance. They said it’s engine failure but they haven’t completed the full inspection yet. I have been using Uber and need a car rental because I can’t afford to sustain this huge inconvenience indefinitely. My transmission has failed fully. It cannot even reverse. I took my car into Hyundai several times to check on the issue and they said the same thing, that the transmission slipping is a standard issue for dual clutch. I told them over and over that this is different. I did some research as to how to have them cover it and have it changed but the dealership said nothings wrong. Fast forward and now my cars transmission is fully gone and it probably won’t be covered when I know that it should have been part of the recall ! Just this year I’ve spent $5000 on repairs for this vehicle and now I’m looking at another $5000 for only a 7 year old vehicle. If that does not constitute a lemon I don’t know what does.

Car is using an abnormally large amount of oil. I reported to Hyundai. They sent me to a Hyundai dealership for an Oil Consumption Test. They confirmed that I do not have an oil leak under the automobile. The dealer is telling me “it’s completely NORMAL TO BURN THROUGH 1 QUART OF OIL FOR EVERY 1,000 MILES”. That would leave my automobile with only two quarts of oil after driving 3,000 miles. The owner’s manual does not state any of this. Now I am paying a significant amount of money on Oil Consumption Tests of which they are telling me I might need several before they MIGHT fix the problem. This 2017 Hyundai Tucson is one of the models and years affected.
#11626014 |
The engine developed a knocking sound at 97,018 miles. When it was checked, it did not have any oil in it at all, regardless of there not being an oil leak in the system. The car received regular service. When we took it to Hyundai they did a test and confirmed that it was burning oil. This engine malfunction put my [XXX] daughter, the primary driver, at risk for engine failure while driving it. The engine light and knocking sound happened with no warning. Yes, the problem was confirmed by the Reed Hyundai of Kansas City. They told us that the car needs a new engine and that they bear no responsibility for the malfunction. The engine lights and sounds happened simultaneously. The vehicle was immediately stopped and towed to the dealership. The car suddenly stopped accelerating. There were no signs that something was wrong prior. I was driving on the highway when I felt a loss of power, then my check engine light started blinking. The car entered “limp mode” and the engine started knocking. The code it was showing was for a knock sensor, I replaced that and it still would not accelerate. There is something wrong with the rod bearings and I was told by the dealership that this is a common problem with the type of engine they use in these vehicles.

In August 2024, the engine of the vehicle suddenly started making a very loud knocking noise, with no previous warning lights. We did not feel it was safe to drive. We saw online that a recall was underway by Hyundai for 2017 Tucsons due to problems with the rod bearings, where metal spreads throughout the engine. There is the potential for the engine to catch fire, and a complete engine replacement is recommended. This was confirmed by the dealership where we bought the vehicle, Boucher Hyundai of Waukesha, which told us they are replacing the engines in many of these vehicles. However, our VIN was not included in the recall, although the problem is identical to what is described in the recall. We had the car towed to the dealership; after confirming the problem, the dealership filed a claim with Hyundai seeking to add our VIN to the recall. We...

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled with no warning light illuminated. The contact did not have to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 80,964.
#11624487 |
Engine light notification was not present before, during or after the complete engine failure of the vehicle while driving. Per dealership, they are unable to find a replacement motor and are going to rebuild the engine.

I change the oil every 2000 miles and use what it states. Second oil change that noticed the oil drained out of the vehicle was close to nothing. First of all no warning indication oil was that low. It vibrates when it’s still and when you accelerate it tugs. Took it to the dealership where purchased extended warranty. Temporary fix is combustion cleaning with re seat piston rings then a valve cleaning and pcv replacement. Permanent solution replace the engine which warranty won’t cover since it’s technically not broken. Charging me ridiculous amount money for temporary fix. What if the oil goes else where or doesn’t notified low oil. It can catch on fire or all of sudden stops. I have my two babies with me in the car always it’s our family car. Vehicle has been inspected by dealership not inspected by police insurance representatives or others. No indication...

Was driving down highway and vehicle lost power and shut off. Brought car to mechanic shop they ran a diagnostic and tore down the engine to see what the problem was. They found the problem was with oil consumption and carbon buildup. Oil was leaking through the pistons, piston rings into the combustion chamber, which in part was causing oil to go through the exhaust system. They found oil in the exhaust pipes and the catalytic converter and the exhaust manifold. The catalytic converter had to be replaced because it was clogged with all the oil that was leaking through the exhaust system from the combustion chamber. They found carbon buildup on the pistons, the piston rings and inside the combustion chamber

The contact owned a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that the vehicle was unoccupied and parked at the residence for a couple of days, he received a call from a neighbor informing that there was a fire at his residence. The contact was not home at the time and upon arrival, he observed the vehicle engulfed in flames. The fire then quickly spread from the vehicle to the stand-alone garage and driveway causing damage. The contact and a neighbor attempted to extinguish the fire but were unsuccessful. The fire department extinguished the fire. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed by the insurance company to the salvage lot where a forensic specialist was pending an investigation per the manufacturer and was yet to produce any information. The contact mentioned that the vehicle burned leaving only the framing remains. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure...

The engine appears to have a malfunction, particularly related to acceleration and oil consumption. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The vehicle experiences sudden jerking during acceleration, which can lead to loss of control and increase the risk of a collision. Additionally, stalling can occur unexpectedly, posing a significant hazard, especially in traffic. Yes, the issue has been confirmed by a local dealership, where they noted the jerking during acceleration and the high oil consumption. Yes, the vehicle has been inspected by the dealership, but it has not been inspected by the manufacturer or insurance representatives. There were no warning lamps or messages prior to the incidents. The symptoms first appeared approximately 8 months ago and is ongoing.

I reported a problem with my engine to the Clay Cooley Hyundai dealership (Mesquite) in April 2022. I told them that my oil was burning a lot faster than normal. My car was currently under warranty at the time, which would have covered a new engine replacement. The dealership instructed me to do “oil consumption” tests and had me come in every 1000 miles to see if there were any oil leaks. Once I completed the tests, they told me to do another round of testing, which I thought was odd. I ended up doing tests from April-October 2022, and by the time I was finished my warranty expired. They said that my engine was fine and good to drive. I took my car to the same dealership in August 2024 with the same issue and that my engine wasn’t accelerating. They are now telling that there is a problem...

The engine started to lose power and then completely died the engine and oil lights came on the car would restart for about 30 sec but would not move when put into drive it broke down on [XXX] extremely dangerous road road with traffic moving above 55 mph I was broke down in the center lane after I called a tow truck and placed a call to the WSP in fear of getting killed on this road this caused extreme anxiety and loss of wages due to this trauma This is the 3rd time this same vehicle broke down The first time I had it towed to the dealership in Bellingham WA where they said it was a cracked spark plug ? And charged $650 to replace still under warranty the 2nd time this vehicle broke down I towed to a certified mechanic it was a burnt valve the repair...

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that while his girlfriend was driving approximately 50 MPH, the engine started knocking, and the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that the engine was consuming one quart of oil every week. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who determined that the engine was blown. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the drive belt was frayed, the crank pulley was deteriorating, and that there was a misfire in cylinder #4. The catalytic convertor DTC code: P0240 was displayed, the exhaust was burned, and there was excessive oil consumption. The manufacturer was contacted, and the contact was informed that there was no warranty coverage on the vehicle. There was no assistance provided. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

The engine is consuming extreme amounts of oil. 1-2 quarts a week. The oil light does not alert that oil is low and could cause a very dangerous situation. My car was running and just stopped while driving because oil had coated the spark plugs. Hyundai refused to honor my warranty. They want the car for 6 months to put new motor and only after I pay $1000 for a cleaning when they even admitted it was a known problem and I should "try to sell the car as fast as possible and not mention the oil consumption" I've continued trying to get them to correct this since November 2023

My engine in 2023 was burning oil excessively, which caused my CAT to become clogged. I was unable to drive the vehicle and had to have both replaced by Hyundai. I paid partial for the CAT. A year later now in 2024, this “new” engine is doing the same and my new CAT is clogged again. I had to add oil continuously. Now they are refusing to fix anything

On [XXX] my daughter was driving in Meridian Ms and when she was at a red light the 2017 Hyundai Tuscon that she was driving started shaking and all the lights on the dashboard came on and she couldn't drive because it wouldn't move. She called a tow truck to have it taken to Firestone. When they looked at it, they said the reading was spark plugs and fuel injectors that needed to be replaced. After they did that, the car still would not work. We paid 1300.00 dollars for them to do this. We then had it towed to Hyundai in Flowood Ms. We learned that the whole engine needs to be replaced. We Take very good care of our cars and this shouldnt be happening. I see that there is an extended warranty for 2017 tucsons with engine failures, but our particular engine is not included in this....

Engine began to sputter then immediately shut down as I was driving. After parking safely, there were traces of metal in the oil & the oil was a milky color. Ran the code and it came up as an issue with the rod bearings.

Took my 2017 Hyundai Tucson 1.6t engine into the service center on 8/21 for a check engine light and Bluelink notification of "A possible condition with your Engine Control System has been detected" that came on Sunday 8/18. Service center diagnosed P0326 ($159.00) From the service center: We have pulled code P0326 for an issue with the knock sensor readings. The vehicle can sue an oil change as is due and there is a gasket leak which sounds like it is from turbo or manifold gasket which is causing that rattling noise you're hearing. Below is the three itemized recommendations for this vehicle. 1) Knock sensor replacement -$635 +taxes installed 2) Oil change recommended $ 85 +taxes 3) Turbo gasket replacement $205 + taxes installed. I bought my car in 2020 and only have 53,000miles on it and was told it's out of warranty so this isn't covered - even...

Check engine light came on after regular maintainer of car and a new timing belt was put on. Engine is making knocking noise and running not smooth at all. Car burns oils at a very high rate and is almost out of oil at 3,000 miles when I am told typical cars like this should last close to 5000 miles. Again I am getting regular maintenance and oil changes. Car had a little over 100,000 miles and 1 previous owner.

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle had suddenly decelerated and would not properly accelerate. Upon inspection, the contact discovered that the engine oil level was extremely low due to excessive oil consumption. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 149,000.

The vehicle has 83,000 miles. It burns through 10 quarts of oil per 5,000 miles. No oil or check engine light comes on. Twice It has been dry when having the oil changed. Additionally, the vehicle suddenly started to jerk and misfire, the check engine light came on. I was within a block of my home and was able to return home. This would have been extremely dangerous in traffic. I have changed the coils and plugs, but it continues to hesitate and run unevenly, just like so many other reports.

I am not a mechanic, but I know that my engine consumes 5-8 quarts of oil every 3000 miles. In addition to the engine oil consumption problem, I have noticed a severe burning smell in my car cabin, especially on takeoff, but it lingers. Unfortunately, I have to breathe this in every time I drive my car, and it is making my headaches much worse. I have taken my car to a private mechanic's shop, and the mechanic noticed the problem during two previous oil changes. I have not yet taken my car to the police or insurance company. There have been no warning messages or lights illuminated on the dashboard.

I purchased a 2017 Hyundai Tucson with a 1.6L Turbo GDI engine. After just one month, the engine developed bearing damage. It seems that this problem is common with this type of engine. Does Hyundai have a recall for this engine model?
#11605891 |
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while driving uphill and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle hesitated to accelerate. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered to cover 95% of the repair costs; however, the contact declined. The failure mileage was approximately 83,287.
#11605567 |
The vehicle had 30,000 miles when purchased and has 62,0000 now using half a quart to quart of oil every thousand miles.

While driving home from work, my engine all of sudden started making a loud knocking noise sounded like you were going up a roller coaster. The oil light started flickering and then the engine light came on. I honestly didn't know if I was going to make it home due to the noise and the car was shaking while driving. I had to have it towed to the dealership. The dealership confirmed the engine needs replaced. I can't even get a new engine anywhere because no one can order one or find one in stock new. I feel it is a safety issue because the engine could have failed on the highway while driving putting myself and others at risk of an accident or maybe even death.
#11604361 |
While driving home from a doctors appointment my engine all of sudden started making a loud knocking noise, the oil light flickered on and off and the check engine light came on. I honestly wasn't sure if I would make it home with the loud noise the engine was making and the car was starting to shake while driving. I did have it towed to the dealership (I have 2 2017 Tucsons both currently at the dealership with blown engines under 60000 miles) and they confirmed the engine needed replaced. I feel this is a safety concern because the engine could have failed while driving putting myself and others at risk of an accident or maybe even death.

As I was driving my 2017 Hyundai Tuscan to work, my vehicle would not accelerate when I pressed the accelerator. The engine would not function properly leaving me in the middle of moving traffic. I was able to pull off the main road to a safe place. My insurance company (Geico) sent an assessor out 7/22/24 who noted a blown engine due to a prematurely worn connecting rod bearing for which there is a noted recall on this particular vehicle model.
