Car engine seized and lost ALL power going 60mph down the highway at night with my child in the back seat. I have poured quarts and quarts of oil in this vehicle because it burns oil at an alarming rate until it eventually runs dry and the engine seizes. This is extremely dangerous and luckily my child and I were able to drift to the side of the road without harm and injury. Very discouraging that there are thousands of these cars and engines on the road that can literally seize up at any minute. Maintenance was performed and kept up with. The Oil pressure light had been flashing when the vehicle turned but was flashing even when oil had just been changed. These engines are dangerous and have people in a financial hard spot. I still owe $16k on a car I can no longer drive and that Hyundai...
Purchased used via Carvana in Sept 2025, check engine light came on while driving it home indicating a pre-existing mechanical defect. We submitted the claim through Silver Rock (Carvana's warranty company) and brought to their approved mechanic. The recommended the following repairs, several that were denied by Carvana/SilverRock: spark plugs, alternator, serpentine belt, fuel injection service, electrical ignition coil. A month later check engine light illuminated again and through further diagnostics the mechanic found that 2 of the faulty spark plugs were an incorrect model/fit for our vehicle and reported that information which resulted in replacement being approved (a month after initial request). Fast forward to January 2026 we experienced the widely reported knocking noise while driving coming from the engine and had it towed. The damage is a thrown rod and damaged bearing, which is consistent with the current oil consumption litigation, requiring engine replacement. Our 2017 Tucson 1.6...
MY engine check engine light and than a warning light came on saying not to drive it and i took it to be repaired at a shop and a hyndai dealer and they told me my engine needed to be replaced even though i always serviced my car. It has 103,000 miles on it. It is the same problem as the other person that reported this problem. The other models were recalled but not this one. Im sure by now you know there is a problem with this engine too. It should be replaced by the company!!
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that while driving approximately 70 MPH, the vehicle lost power, decelerated, and the check engine warning light started flashing on and off. The vehicle was parked on the left shoulder of the highway and later driven to the right shoulder with the assistance of a State Trooper. The vehicle was later towed to the local dealer, who diagnosed that the engine had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The contact was informed that the vehicle was previously serviced under NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V727000 (ENGINE). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 66,000.
Following the knock sensor detection system update, this car has a P1326 code that forces it into limp mode. Occurs during moderate-hard acceleration, e.g. getting on a highway. The car is limited to ≤2000 RPM and ≤ 45 mph, and rapidly decelerates to that speed if necessary. Acceleration is very limited. This occurs roughly every two weeks, despite having a brand new sensor installed by Hyundai. Hyundai has also allegedly performed cleaning on the sensor and related parts. This has been going on since November, when the recall that installed this update was performed.
Engine lost power suddenly on the highway. Vehicle entered limp mode and became limited to 45MPH and reduced acceleration.
am submitting a safety complaint regarding my Hyundai vehicle due to repeated engine power loss (limp mode), excessive oil loss, and a denied engine recall replacement. I initially brought my vehicle to the dealership after experiencing engine power loss/limp mode, engine oil loss, and illuminated check engine warning lights. The dealership confirmed that my vehicle was covered under an engine recall and stated that the recall procedure was completed. As part of this process, the dealership performed an engine combustion-related service and charged me approximately $1,600. After this repair, I drove the vehicle for approximately 1,000 miles. When I returned the vehicle to the dealership, the vehicle entered limp mode on the same day it was brought in, and the check engine light was illuminated again. The dealership advised me that the vehicle had lost an excessive amount of engine oil during the 1,000-mile period. Due to the continued engine...
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to two independent mechanics, and DTC: P1326; was retrieved. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was advised not to drive the vehicle and to have the vehicle towed to the dealer. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, and the contact was informed that a diagnostic fee would be charged. The contact stated that the TSB: 21-01-023H was performed in February 2025. The dealer was informed that the same failure had occurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 92,200.
Engine is burning oil causing the catalytic converter to clog and fail. Hyundai dealership told me after I had the car towed to them for repair on 12/30/2025 that the catalytic converter had already been replaced before in March 2024. I had purchased the car from another dealership March 2025 and the catalytic converter replacement was not on the car fax. I was also I formed by the Hyandai dealership that my car has an extended warranty of 10 year/150,000 miles on the engine due to the known oil consumption issue. My car has 131,000 miles. I was told Hyandai will make it very difficult for engine replacement since I’m a second owner. There needs to be a recall immediately.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, an abnormal pop sound could be heard coming from the engine. The oil warning light was illuminated. The contact was about to merge to the side of the road when the contact noticed a glow on the underside of the vehicle. The contact then pulled into a parking lot, smoke was emitting from under the hood, and entered the vehicle through the A/C vents, and noticed the flames under the hood. The contact stated that the heater was turned on, and the contact immediately turned off the heater. The contact opened the hood and used a fire extinguisher to extinguish the flames. The fire department was called to check the vehicle to make sure the fire was extinguished. The fire department used a thermo reader to make sure that there was no more...
severe oil consumption. the vehicle eats the oil at an alarming rate. having to fill the oil tank very often and the engine light has been on. it is affecting acceleration at 30mph where the engine warning light will flash. It also completely dies while driving. very unsafe and needs to be resolved.
I purchased a CPO 2017 Hyundai Tucson in June'22 and brought it in for engine stuttering, the car stalling in intersections and was told they couldn't duplicate the problem. I emailed and brought the car in again and still noting was rectified. I've made the oil changes, changed spark plugs, flushed the engine in July and got new oil and everything looked at and in October the engine seized while my husband was driving to work: no oil lights on no engine lights on. Neither Hyundai or the extended warranty will help. My VIN didn't come up in a recall but there's too many problems with other 2017 I would hope they'd look again and help their customers.
I’m submitting this complaint to report what appears to be a serious safety-related engine issue in my 2017 Hyundai Tucson Sport 2WD with the 1.6L DI Turbo engine [T-GDI GAMMA]. I’m aware of NHTSA Recall 21V-727, which covers 2017 Hyundai Tucson models with the 2.0L engine for premature engine bearing wear. The symptoms covered by that recall are nearly identical to the symptoms my vehicle is now showing. My VIN shows no open recalls or service campaigns on Hyundai’s website, but the problems I’m experiencing match those found in many other consumer reports for this same year, make, and model. My vehicle has only 80,000 miles and has had regular maintenance. Examples include loud knocking from the engine that rises and falls with RPM, and metal shavings in the oil. One complaint that reflects the same pattern can be found in NHTSA ID 11680114, which describes engine knocking and metal...
The 2017 Hyundai Tucson I owned had the engine FAIL (internal bearing failure) rendering the car basically worthless. Hyundai has multiple recalls on this type of engine. My car had 120,000 miles when the engine failed. Hyundai REFUSED to offer ANY assistance on this, fully knowing that these engines have had thousands of problems in Australia and the US. This is a problem they KNOW exist and they are doing nothing!!!! They need to admit the problems and help consumers when this happens instead of trying to WEASEL out of any responsibility. Thanks.
I am writing regarding a serious incident involving negligent automotive service performed by Jiffy Lube Store #687. On October 24, 2025, I took my 2017 Hyundai Tucson to this location for a standard oil change. I trusted that the service would be completed properly and safely. However, on November 21, my vehicle’s oil lamp unexpectedly illuminated. Concerned, I returned to Jiffy Lube on November 22, where employees informed me that they had “sealed the small leak and topped [my] oil,” adding that I was entitled to two top-offs between oil changes and “should be good for two weeks.” Tragically, the very next day, November 23, the oil lamp flashed again. My vehicle then shut off while I was driving, with my children in the back seat. This was a frightening and dangerous situation for all of us. I am now left confused, stressed, and unsure of the full extent of...
- Kept regular 5K-6K oil changes since 2022 when I purchased the vehicle -Took the vehicle to a Hyundai dealership, multiple times, to ask about the engine stalling at a stop or slow turn, and/or jerking. -July '25 new oil change and flushed engine -October'25- no engine or oil lights. Engine seized and needs to be replaced. - VIN didn't populate recall but the symptoms are the same
Component/system: Engine / powertrain – excessive engine oil consumption. The original engine is still in the vehicle and is available for inspection upon request. On 11/7/2025 my dealer (Ourisman Hyundai in [XXX] ) added 2 quarts of oil at 90,999 miles after the dipstick showed a very low level. After that visit, we drove approximately 713 miles (mostly highway, including a college visit trip), and the oil level again dropped close to the same low point on the dipstick. On 11/22/2025 at 2:10 PM, with mileage at 91,815, the dipstick again showed a significantly low oil level. I am concerned that this abnormal oil consumption could lead to sudden engine failure or loss of power while driving at highway speeds, putting my family and others on the road at risk. This vehicle is used regularly for my daughter’s college visits and everyday transportation. The dealer has acknowledged the concern, previously...
Sensors something to do with the motor and not sure where the other sensors is related to could be the motor as well. The safety was not good due to it shut off in the middle of traffic and making wraddling noise. I took the vehicle to the dealership where purchase from. They have done nothing besides fixed one thing that I know of supposed to been the surpension. But the other problems was not fixed No it has not been inspected by anyone The warning lamp come on and just blinking none stop
My 2017 Hyundai Tucson is experiencing severe oil consumption, which appears to be related to a known manufacturing defect affecting Hyundai engines from this period. My vehicle is burning through oil rapidly between normal oil change intervals, and it has begun showing signs of low oil levels despite no external leaks. This creates a serious safety concern because the engine can fail without warning. The dealership has acknowledged that excessive oil consumption is a known issue for this engine but refuses to provide assistance because I do not have “enough oil change documentation” over the years. However, this issue is not caused by lack of maintenance — it is a widespread internal defect that Hyundai has issued multiple technical service bulletins for. My car has been maintained, and oil changes were performed at regular intervals, even if I do not have complete paperwork. The rapid oil burning is ongoing and...
vehicle is burning through oil.
I know there is a re-call for my vehicles engine and year with model. I am having serious issues with my vehicle related to the recalls for the same year and model. I feel unsafe driving my vehicle and now I do not know what to do.
I recently purchased vehicle and when checking recalls from my local Hyundai dealership I was advised that there was two previous attempts to have engine replaced due to knocking and it was denied this recalls is the 209 I escalated to Hyundai corporate and after taking to a Hyundai dealership and paying for a diagnostic test they advised car doesn't have oil pressure and the oil pump needed replaced and Hyundai corporate denied repairs saying this didn't pertain to recall 209 because my engine is a 1.6 liter and it was ok only to the 2.0 engines, I would like to report this and ask for help please.
Oil consumption problem caused vehicle to go into Limp Mode on freeway. Manufacturer states 1qt loss every 1000 miles is acceptable.
Hyundai issued a major recall in 2025 for models like the Sonata, Tucson, and Santa Fe due to faulty piston rings and ECM settings that caused oil to burn rapidly. consume oil excessively due to defective piston rings, engine control module (ECM) issues, or poor engine design. These problems cause oil to burn inside the engine rather than leak externally. it needs to be recalled or replaced this is a saftey issue for me and my family it is using excessive oil and there are no visible leaks please fix it this !
Burning oil. More than a quart every couple hundred miles sometimes much more than that. Very bad burning oil smell coming from engine into the inside of my car. I feel sick everytime I drive from breathing in fumes. Need oil consumption test asap
1- I purchased a 2017 Hyundai from CarMax in Edison, NJ 2- Within one month the car broke down, choking and not being able to go highway speeds 3- Brought it to Goodyear, (CarMax’s repair provider for their warranty). They replaced the ignition coils, engine modules-coils, performed a GDI/PFI 2-step fuel system cleaning, (known as Top Engine Cleaning. They replaced the spark plugs and the engine air and cabin filters. The engine was clogged with carbon deposits. 4- 7 Months later the same thing happened and the same work was done by Pep Boys. 5- Two to three weeks later it happened again. The work was guaranteed so they “fixed” it again. They also said the engine was low by 2 1/2 quarts and there was a problem with that engine, I should check with Hyundai. 6- I was told by Hyundai’s corporate office to go to one of their...
My 2017 Hyundai Tucson has completely broken down will not go into reverse had a diagnostics at Hyundai. I thought it was going to be covered because of the class action suit. My car apparently was not in the recall or the suit. I don’t understand I have the identical problem of the dual clutch transmission issue. I’ve tried to get Hyundai to do good-faith repair they refused. I’ve contacted Carmax where I purchased the vehicle. They had the car when the lawsuit was finalized I didn’t know anything about the lawsuit or the problem with the vehicle. I’ve had the car for five years it’s at 85,000 miles. I don’t know what to do.
Excessive oil consumption leading to catastrophic engine failure
I've taken the vehicle to several mechanics for engine-idling when turning, going up-hill. I've purchased new plugs, lines, engine cleaners, no-one can figure it out. The oil now has engine shavings even though the oil was recently changed. The car broke down today
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that while depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to respond while stopped at a red light. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed; however, the diagnostic result was unknown. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 95,000.
The auto has 112,000 miles and is using oil excessively. A quart with every gas fill up.
Engine burning oil. Had 2 oil consumption tests and failed both. Had engine combustion chamber cleaned and still burning oil. Hyundai denied new engine
excessive OIL CONSUMPTION no leaks its buring oil
Had an oil change on September 29th. The mechanic brought to my attention metal shavings in the oil and advised that I should get rid of the car because it won’t last much longer. It drove fine for a day until the next afternoon I was driving on the highway with my children and the engine started knocking loudly. The car stopped accelerating past 45 mph. I was close to my house fortunately but barely made it as it sounded like the engine would blow. It is now sitting in my driveway still knocking when I start it and don’t feel safe driving it anywhere. There were 0 warning lights. I was not aware of the engine issues these cars had until I did some research and looks like it’s very common. Seeing some people had luck getting replacement engines in the past and many others not. This needs to...
NHTSA Complaint – 2017 Hyundai Tucson Oil Consumption, Engine Defect, and Branded Title I am filing this complaint regarding my 2017 Hyundai Tucson, which suffers from abnormal oil consumption and engine problems. In addition, Hyundai Motor Company internally “branded” the title without disclosure, which voided my eligibility for warranty coverage. These issues create both serious safety risks and consumer protection concerns. 1.Oil Consumption and Engine Issues •This Tucson has had oil consumption problems since the first owner, which I only discovered a year after purchasing the vehicle. •The vehicle burns oil excessively between service intervals, often requiring top-offs after just a few hundred miles. •Critically, the low oil pressure warning light provides no early warning. It only activates once oil levels are already dangerously low, leaving no safe margin to protect the engine. •On multiple occasions, I was unaware the engine oil had dropped to unsafe levels until the vehicle...
Excessive oil consumption
My 2017 Hyundai Tucson has been chonking out and having acceleration problems. I thought it was because of AC running. When I took it in for inspection my mechanic stated it was misfiring. I am meticulous about routine maintenance (I.e. tire rotation and/or replacement, oil change, inspection, etc), as well as whatever if any repairs are needed. I immediately reached out to my local Hyundai dealer but they never responded. It should be corrected by Hyundai and a recall issued. After researching the issue I see I’m not the only one with a problem. The 1.6 L engine should have been recalled because apparently the same turbo engine in the GDI model was. I have all my maintenance records to support my claim. Come Hyundai!!! I thought you stood behind your vehicles?????
My engine has been burning oil. The engine light has been on for just over the past year because an O2 sensor in the catalytic converter needs replacing, however, this is unrelated to the issue. The oil light started flickering earlier this year (approx 8 months ago) but would never stay on. I called my mechanic and they recommended I check the oil. Sure enough it needed oil. Since then I have had to continuously add oil in between oil changes, however, the oil light rarely comes on or flickers to indicate this need, I just need to check. The engine has been making a ticking sound and that gets louder or worse I have noticed as the engine burns the oil. I have read up on other 2017 Hyundai Tucsons having the same engine failures and that some are covered under recall but mine does not seem to be....
Every time I get the oil changed I have to add 2-5 quarts of oil in between changes. I had the catalytic converter replaced 3 years ago and now I have to do it again. I’ve had nothing but issues with this car and oil consumption. I shouldn’t need another catalytic converter again after only a few years. I’m doing my 3rd oil consumption test right now.
Excessive oil consumption, Full synthetic Oil last less than 2000 miles. Transmission takes some time to respond when start driving from a stop. Car shake a bit.
Electric,
Excessive oil consumption! Keep being told that they cannot find an issue
While driving to work on I-26 in the far left lane at approximately 55 mph, my vehicle suddenly and completely shut off without warning. The engine power was lost instantly, forcing the car to come to an abrupt stop in live interstate traffic. I had no prior indication of a problem—no warning lights, no messages, no abnormal performance. It took three attempts to restart the vehicle. When it finally restarted, the engine made a loud knocking noise, and the car could only move at a dangerously slow crawl. I had to cross multiple lanes of high-speed traffic to reach the right shoulder, nearly causing several accidents in the process. Other drivers had to brake hard and swerve to avoid colliding with me. This situation could have easily resulted in a multi-vehicle crash, severe injury, or death. After pulling over and shutting the vehicle off, I checked the oil dipstick and...
I am the original owner of my 2017 Hyundai Tucson. I am a [XXX] retired teacher. I became aware that my 2017 Hyundai Tucson was consuming oil in August 2024. I took my Tucson to Buerkle Hyundai, where it was purchased, and they set my vehicle up for oil consumption testing. Every 1,000-1,100 miles my car's oil level needed to be checked by an authorized Hyundai dealership. This required time and planning. I began working with Luther Hyundai in Burnsville, MN for testing as they are close to my house and requested to take over when I brought my vehicle in for the first check. This engine issue is covered by my 10 year/100,000 mile warranty. My vehicle's oil level was checked as required for the testing. Hyundai considers a vehicle burning 1 quart of oil or less per 1,000 miles to be acceptable. My vehicle consistently consumed oil and...
Loud knocking in the engine that increases or decreases with the rpm. Metal shavings found in the oil. Appears to be same issues described as active recall for 2017 Tucson’s, but no recall for this vin. No alerts were or have been triggered within the car. This has not been brought to a dealership out of fear of seizing the engine.
My car has been consuming large amounts of oil and as a result has had two catalytic converters replaced. Twice now we have been disabled on the highway due to aggressively poor engine performance.
This unresolved issue has created serious safety risks. On two separate occasions, my vehicle lost power while crossing the Leo Frigo Bridge in Green Bay—an extremely dangerous scenario for both my family and other drivers. Most recently, within just ~40 miles of picking up the vehicle from service, the issue recurred. The service department reported finding oil on the ignition coils—symptoms consistent with known and documented warranty concerns such as: Valve cover gasket leaks Spark plug tube seal failure High-pressure fuel pump gasket leaks The vehicle has been brought multiple times to a certified Hyundai dealership for recurring problems including power loss, poor engine performance, and excessive oil consumption. Despite these repeated service visits, the underlying issue has not been properly addressed. I have now been informed that I am responsible for diagnostic charges—even though the vehicle is covered under the TXXM Engine Warranty Extension / Powertrain Limited Warranty due...
In April of 2023 while driving I heard a pop noise and my engine started smoking. A connecting rod had broke in half and went through my oil tank. My 2017 Hyundai Tucson had only 54k miles. I was denied warranty and my vehicle was branded maintenance neglect due to lack of proof of oil change but when I sent the dealership I purchased my vehicle from the all my oil change receipts in August 2023 I was still denied and my car is still branded today without explanation.
The turbocharger on my 2017 Hyundai Tucson 1.6T has failed three times within one year. Most recently, the dealership diagnosed the turbo’s wastegate actuator as being completely open, resulting in severe power loss and unsafe driving conditions. The replacement turbo from an authorized parts supplier is still under a 5-year warranty, and the dealership confirmed there were no oil feed or installation issues contributing to this repeated failure. Component/System Failed: Turbocharger (wastegate actuator stuck fully open). The failed turbocharger is available for inspection upon request. Safety Risk: The vehicle experienced severe loss of power while and also the dealer made me aware there is a valve stuck in the turbo itself and if i drive it it could blow the motor up, which made merging and accelerating unsafe and could have resulted in a collision. The lack of engine power when entering traffic or climbing steep grades put both myself...
