The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving approximately 50 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power and failed to accelerate above 35 MPH. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was driven to the residence with the hazard lights activated. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that an unknown part needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 76,000.
Car is burning an excessive amount of oil. After getting the oil changed I needed to add additional oil. Car is driving sluggish and won't pick up speed. In 2023 the car bucked, check engine light came on and the car failed to drive over 60mph. I took to Firestone to be repaired and they fixed the knock sensor. After a few weeks, the car bucked, check engine light came on and car would not drive over 60, they also informed me the car used too much oil since I drove it last, there was a service bulletin for the oil consumption and to take to Hyundai. Took to dealer for repair, they said engine consumption is fine. After a few days cars started becoming sluggish not picking up speed. I checked the oil - it was empty.
Excessive oil consumption
The engine is burning about 3 quarts of oil every 500 miles of driving. It is causing carbon to gunk up the spark plugs every month and a misfire will happen at random. I tried contacting the dealer and even though they have several complaints, they said they won’t do anything. I have brought it to several mechanics and they say the manufactured engine needs to be replaced.
Engine consumes way to much oil got oil changed and a week later it was almost empty when i checked. This has been an ongoing issue for many years already.
Engine is consuming lots of oil. There are recalls on Sonatas but mine is not included, although I have a 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport with a 2.4L Theta Engine produced in Alabama which are engines that are having defects with oil consumption. 2-3 months I was trying to get car into a dealership for inspection of engine because I kept having to add oil. They would not provide a loaner & I could not afford a rental at time or go without a car. In October 2022, I had to I take car to Hyundai in Trenton, NJ because engine light came on & car was jumping. Spark plug in cylinder 4 blew from low oil. On report from dealership that's exactly what is written on it. They replaced spark plug & got approval to start oil consumption testing. Had to drive 1,000 miles. Returned car & was missing 3...
Hyundai has an active recall and open service bulletins for an ongoing issue with Knock Sensors in 2017 Sonatas (my vehicle is a 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport). Over the last 18 months... the vehicle has been in for service 6 times... 4 in the last 6 weeks... due to ongoing issues with the knock sensor causing the vehicle to go into "limp mode" and causing the vehicle to decrease speed to a max of 60mph. There is no pre-warning for when the sensor will trip and cause the issues... which means if a vehicle is on a highway traveling at a speed of 70mph or more, and the sensor trips... the vehicle will decrease speed down to 60mph maximum. The protocol I am aware of for the repairs... was a first step software update... 2nd step replacement of the sensor... 3rd step replacement of the engine. In 6 attempts to...
Purchased a used Hyundai Sonata in June 2020 when it had almost 57,000 miles on it. Got the car regularly serviced and provided receipts to Hyundai on the national level as well as the local dealership. Received the following claim number - Hyundai Motor America Case#: [XXX]. [XXX]is with the Dealership in Dallas Texas and they car is with his dealership. Have also been dealing with[XXX] at Clay Cooley Hyundai Mesquite [XXX]. The engine does not work and needs to be replaced. Hyundai should be responsible for replacing the engine. The car has only around 76,000 miles on it. Hyundai Mesquite is threating to tow the car and possibly have it junked if it is not picked up. I cannot afford to pick up a car that does not operate. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
I purchased my vehicle in November 2022 from Honda Dealership. It was making a noise and “drove funny” I asked them about it and I was reassured the vehicle was in 100% working condition and they were not allowed to sell “bad cars”. So, I let it go. Since I purchased the car I have maintained regular oil changes and service on it— I just bought the car! I have been getting oil changes a lot sooner than I should, and every-time I take it to the shop they say it’s bone dry. Current: my car recently stopped working without any warning at all. I got a diagnosis from the mechanic that my engine failed due to pistons and rods. I did some research and found my car listed for a recall for campaign 953. And I am not the only sonata owner experiencing this problem.
I was driving southbound on I429 approaching the Vineland Wintergarden (FL)exit. approximately .75 miles from exit, a bit of an uphill. I heard a ticking noise, then suddenly the car went silent. The screen lit up with every sensor flashing. It took me a few seconds to realize I was in potentially deadly trouble. The car began slowing from 70 MPH to maybe 25MPH as I crested the last hill. To add complications, that stretch is under construction and does not have any shoulder. I could see a wall of cars streaming ever closer in my rear view mirror. I believe my hazzard lights probably saved me from a crash before gliding the last 1/4 mile to the exit where I was able to finally pull over to safety.
On February 11, 2022, I took my car to the dealership because my oil light came on. I was told I had no oil in the engine. So they said to get an oil change and that would take care of the problem. Nope. It has not taken care of the problem. My car burns oil. I have taken it to 2 different Hyundai shops. One just kept changing the oil and never submit the paperwork until I got really upset about bringing my car back a month after having the oil change. No help. I have called Hyundai customer service no help at all. In January 2023 I went to start my car and it started jerking and shaking and spitting out oil threw the tailpipe. The car would not move. My garage door was covered with oil. I had it towed to another Hyundai dealership they kept the...

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle shuddered, and the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who replaced the ignition coil pack and the spark plugs; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.
The check engine light started flashing Check hybrid system turn off engine massage appeared The gas pedal doesnt work and the car jumps The problem happened 4 times so far with me The same problem happened about 5 times with my uncle that drives 2016 sonata hybrid
Hello, I would like to file a complaint my name is [XXX] I am having a translator help me to write this. I was taken advantage of by a bad car dealership who sold me a dangerous car that smokes leaked oil does not stop and locks up they said the car was safe they also did not explain the contract to me. They want me to drive unsafe vehicle 1000 miles. They won’t give me a loaner car. They won’t give me my money back or a replace my car I feel unsafe and I don’t want to do business with them ever again. I want my money back. They took advantage of me because I didn’t know any better. Translators notes : regarding purchase of vehicle: He purchased a used car, 2017 Hyundai Sonata/ at McGrath City Hyunda. He does not know English The dealership took advantage of...
Excessive oil consumption and Engine locked while driving on the highway. I couldn’t drive my car and it was towed to a mechanic. The cost for a new engine and labor is $7970.
The engine is consuming (burning) the engine oil at a excessive rate. Engine oil has to be added almost every 1000 miles. Talked to multiple mechanics and learnt that it is a common problem with Hyundai. Constantly checking the oil level and topping off is not what we expected when I bought the car.
UNKNOWN I’ve had to replace the knock sensor twice in my vehicle in less than 2 months, my paint on my car is also peeling off really bad.
bought the car used with 60K miles. Learned quickly it was consuming 1 qt of oil per month. I checked with Hyundai Corporate Customer Care and my local dealership. Dealership said needed to burn 1qt per 1000 miles before they would submit anything to corporate for possible warrantee issue. Monitored consumption. Now up to about 2 qts per month. Took it to the dealership and they said now beyond warranty mileage. They performed a computer update recall. Now the computer detects something going on the engine and forcing car into Limp Mode. Been on the phone with Corporate Customer Care and the dealership. They will do nothing. Customer care says to go to dealership. Dealership says to call Customer Care. There doesn't seem to be a way to talk to any decision makers to appeal for common sense and discretion instead of 100% by the book policy protocal. The dealership...
The contact's girlfriend owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while his girlfriend was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the girlfriend's residence. The dealer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that he needed to pay out of pocket for the diagnostic. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that the VIN was included in Service Campaign Number: 953 (ECM & Cluster Update - Engine Monitoring Logic Product Improvement). The failure mileage was approximately 64,500.
Car has been consuming insane amount of oil.The oil warning light hardly ever comes on and when it does it is always in between the oil changes. It doesn't even make it to the next scheduled oil change before the light finally comes on. When I check it when the light is on it is bone dry. Because of this I have started checking it every couple hundred or miles or so and every time it's bone dry and I have to add at least two quarts of oil, if not a total of five courts. I informed the dealership about this last year they performed the oil pressure check and told me that it was fine. I insisted that oil must be leaking somewhere, they checked and said that there was no oil leak. Last week my car started sputtering, and then the engine light came on. It did...

My engine is consuming oil at a high rate of more than a quart per 1000 miles. I went 3k between oil changes had 2 quarts added at about 1500 miles and was still low at the end of the 3k. Hyundai claims this is normal. I had previously completed the oil consumption test and Hyundai claims there is no issue. The oil pressure light started going on around July of 2021. Between the oil consumption tests and then additional driving it is 18 months later and not resolved.

2017 Hyundai Sonata with Theta II engine received knock sensor detection software update 7/30/19. Engine knock increased substantially during August and September of 2022 with periodic, partial loss of power at idling and significant oil consumption. Dealership initiated oil consumption testing 9/24/22. On 11/2/22, vehicle fully stalled with blue smoke from exhaust during slow-speed turn in normal driving conditions. Owner and child in vehicle were uninjured. Dealership unable to replicate stall or identify error codes. Dealership's 11/11/22 oil consumption test identified excessive oil consumption. Dealership cleaned combustion chamber. Vehicle experienced partial stall 12/15/22 at moderate speed in normal driving conditions. Dealership performed final oil consumption test 12/20/22 and reported normal oil consumption (.25 quart in 1,000 miles).

The steering wheel began making a clicking and crunching sound in June 2022. Happening inconsistently the issue was not looked into right away. In October 2022 the issue escalated with the power steering disengaging completely when the wheel was making the noise. The steering wheel becomes so hard and immovable, locking all most. The steering wheel waning light comes on and hydroplane slippery warning as well. The engine also shudders and turns off sometimes when cold and warm.

Car was bought in march of 2022 and has had major oil problems since . The oil needs to be changed / filled every 2 weeks . Was taken to a proper mechanic shop where it was stated the car is consuming large amounts of oil and it’s burning leaving the oil level bone dry .mechanic stated the oil most likely was leaving through the tail pipe / exhaust on a blue kinda of smoke .
My car was consuming a lot of oil. Hyundai dealership of Spartanburg,SC performed several oil consumption tests. Later I was advised to do an engine cleaning which was about $300. That didn’t resolve the issue. I was then told a piston was broken and couldn’t be fixed to just “wait till the engine blows out” and the motor company will pay for engine replacement. I use this vehicle to transport my four young daughters and fear when and where my engine will go out on us!
The GDI 2.0L and 2.4L engines consume outrageous amounts of oil. Oil has to be added to the vehicle five times between Full Synthetic oil changes totaling almost $100 for just oil to refill the engine. For those who don’t check their oil level often, the dipstick will appear empty. That can lead to engine seizing, an overall decrease in power, and the breaking down of parts due to metal-on-metal impact. The engine also goes through several spark plugs at once. The amount of carbon deposit on the spark plugs is outrageous as well. The electrodes were completely burnt as if they had never been replaced since manufacturing.
my check engine light has came up already three times within each month the codes that appear is P0014 / P1326 i have changed the oil many times and it still appears now my it to the point my car can't be driven it not let me drive it only at a certain limit
Engine is consuming oil at a very fast rate. just changed oil a few weeks ago and when checked oil recently, nothing on dip stick. Had to add over 3 quarts of oil. So far, need to keep adding over a quart a week. As to safety, feels like engine wants to keep stalling when in light traffic. Car has been checked for oil leaks, none found. No MFG, police, insurance has inspected. When oil was so low, not even showing any on dip stick, no engine or oil light ever comes on.
Hybrid system failed, lost power while driving on freeway going 65 m/h during rush hours, RPM gage went down to 0, most instrument light weee lit on dashboard. Speed went all the way down to 40 m/h pressing the gas all the way down. Hybrid system warning light was flashing. Could have been hit by other vehicles on freeway I had to put my hazard flashing signal and wait for the right moment to pull my car off the road and to emergency lane to stop. The first time car was towed to dealer. And dealer was able to confirm the Problem. The spent 2 weeks at dealer until the claimed they had to contact the manufacture and ended up replacing a wire harness they thought water got into it, paid over $600 for this fix. Few months later same problem they ended replacing some sensors due to a recall....
The engine rod bearing gave out and cause the car to stop abrubtly. This caused a pile up car accident directly behind me. My car was not hit thankfully but the engine is damaged and Hyundai said they will not replace it even though there is a recall on the engine.
This vehicle has excessive oil consumption. I have 77k miles and I am going through 1.5 qt oil every 1000 miles. After 1500 miles my oil is so low that the engine misfires and fires a code. The dealer will not admit there is an issue even though multiple people have reported this issue and there is a class action lawsuit on the same issue.
The check engine light came on and wouldn't accelerate normally. The speed was delayed and cutting back and wouldn't pass 40 mph. Upon taking it to a local shop it had to be taken to the buying location by road side assistance. After the service department checked into the problem it now needs a new engine. They stated there were metal shavings in the motor. This was transferred by a known problem in the 2.4 L motor that hyundai has put in their vehicles with problematic bearings. This happened within 2 months of buying this vehicle. We Can't drive it at all now so it's still at the shop.
Engine intermittingly stalls while driving. Unsafe/dangerous!
The Abs brakes and traction control go in and out and affects the brakes while driving, I know there been reports of fire but for some reason my car is not in the recall, same thing with the air bags lights come on showing faulty air bags and on scanner tools but not recalled even though Hyundai knows about these issues. Now for engine I went to have my engine looked at 2 times for oil consumption and all they did was a combustion chamber cleaning twice which both failed in less the 8100 miles so when I took it back for another oil consumption test for the 3rd time today, the engine light came on, it started knocking, lost power and riding rough. Well, they did an engine scanner test and suspect faulty rings allowing oil into the combustion chamber and fouling my new sparks plugs that was installed...
At first it was knocking softly and progressively getting louder than the engine blew on my way picking my son up
On or about August 13 2022, I notice the oil engine light come for a second, then it went off. After parking vehicle at my home and letting the engine cool off a bit and oil to settle, I checked dipstick only to find out that is was showing DRY no oils whatsoever, I then bought 1 qt of oil and added it to engine still dip stick showed dry and not a drop of oil on it. With still 3,000 miles to go before my next oil change, I decided to take it to PepBoys for a new oil change. After one week dip stick was showing oil on the low side and this time the metal on the stick showed whiteish, like it had been over heated. after this decided to take it to dealership GOSH HYUNDAI In Hemet 92545. I was told it would take 2 days...
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving approximately 70 MPH, the vehicle stopped accelerating as needed. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was diagnosed with a knock sensor and cylinder failure. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred. Additionally, while attempting to shift the vehicle into reverse, the vehicle failed to respond. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 85,700.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while coming to a stop, the vehicle would stall and lose motive power. The contact would shift to park(P) and restart the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer who was not able to identify the exact cause of the failure. The O2 sensor was replaced; however, the failure persisted but not as often as before. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was oil level warning light was illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to another dealer and was informed that the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of oil and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 48,000.
