I WENT TO MY NEAREST DEALER, IN HAZLETON, PENNSYLVANIA ABOUT A KNOCKING SOUND IN MY ENGINE AND THE RMPG GOING UP AND DOWN FASTER THEN USUAL WHEN PRESSING ON THE GAS. THEY TOLD ME HYUNDAI COULDN'T COVER IT SINCE MY WARRANTY WAS SOON GOING TO EXPIRE (60,000) MILES. AND THEY COULDN'T TAKE ME IN THAT CERTAIN DAY. MY CAR WOULD LITERALLY JUMP AS IF I WAS IN A HILL WHEN BEING ON A FLAT SURFACE.
I HEARD A VERY LOUD NOISE FROM MY SONATA (SOUNDED LIKE AN ENGINE ABOUT A WEEK AND A HALF AGO. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO MY FIRESTONE SERVICE CENTER TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT. THEY COULD NOT FIND THE ENGINE NOISE WHEN INSPECTED BUT POINTED OUT THAT THIS ENGINE WAS UNDER A RECALL BY HYUNDAI. I THEN EXPERIENCED THE NOISE AGAIN AFTER THE FIRESTONE VISIT AND THE CAR WAS TAKEN INTO DCN HYUNDAI IN SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ. THEY WERE ABLE TO BILL ME NEARLY $300 FOR BRAKE SERVICE, BUT SAID THEY HEARD NO ENGINE NOISE...AND DENIED THAT THE CAR WAS UNDER A RECALL. LO AND BEHOLD, I FOUND IN MY MAILBOX ON FRIDAY 6/9 AN (INTERIM) RECALL NOTICE. IN READING THE RECALL NOTICE RECEIVED IN THE MAIL (AND SUBSEQUENT REPORTS I THEN FOUND ON THE INTERNET), THE WAY I DESCRIBED THE PROBLEM TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT DCN MATCHES VERY,...
NOTHING HAS HAPPENED YET, BUT I UNDERSTAND THE ENGINE COULD FAIL AT ANY TIME AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. THIS IS RECALL #162 AND HYUNDIA SEEMS TO BE DRAGGING THEIR FEET ON A FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM, I UNDERSTAND THIS PROBLEM STARTED WITH THE 2011 MODEL YEAR BECAUSE OF METAL SHAVINGS LEFT IN THE ENGINE AFTER MANUFACTURING, IT SEEMS LIKE A FIX SHOULD HAVE BEEN FOUND BY NOW. I AM GOING ON A EXTENDED ROAD TRIP SHORTLY AND DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING WITHOUT HAVING THIS PROBLEM LOOKED INTO.

HYUNDAI HAS NOTIFIED ME OF A RECALL THAT EFFECTS THE ENGINE AND THAT MAY LEAD TO A POSSIBLE CRASH -- BUT HAS OFFERED NO REMEDY FOR THE PROBLEM. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS AND HOW CAN I ASSURE THE SAFETY OF MYSELF AND MY FAMILY?
DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND NOTICED THE CAR RUNNING FUNNY AND RPMS WERE AT 4000 INSTEAD OF THE USUAL 2000. WHEN I LET OFF THE ACCELERATOR I HEARD A WEIRD NOISE LIKE SOMETHING FLAPPING IN THE WIND. GAVE IT GAS, NOISE WENT AWAY. NO WARNING LIGHTS, NOT OVERHEATING. AFTER ABOUT 3 MILES THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON. I IMMEDIATELY ATTEMPTED TO GET TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD AND THE CAR DIED WITHIN 30 SECONDS OF THE LIGHT COMING ON. PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND COASTED TO A SAFE PARKING PLACE. CHECKED THE OIL, THE COOLANT, ALL WAS GOOD. NOTHING WAS LEAKING, NO SMOKE. I TRIED TO START THE CAR AND IT STARTED WAS RUNNING ROUGH AND DIED. WOULDNT TURN OVER AFTER THAT. SHOP CALLED AND SAID THE ENGINE SEIZED. NOW ITS AT THE DEALERSHIP WAITING TO SEE WHAT THE NEXT STEP IS.

THE FAILURE OCCURRED THREE TIMES PREVIOUSLY. HOSELTON AUTO MALL STATED THAT THERE WAS NO FAILURE WITH THE VEHICLE. THE DEALERS INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT NO REMEDY WAS AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 32,500. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.

MY ENGINE HAS HESITATED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS AND WHEN I LOOKED UP THE INFORMATION TO SEE IF THERE WAS A RECALL OR DEFECT ONLINE I NOTICED THAT THERE IS IN FACT A RECALL. RECALL NUMBER 162 SHOWS THAT WE ARE SUPPOSE TO GET A LETTER BUT I HAVE STILL GET TO GET A RECALL NOTICE AND THERE STILL APPEARS TO BE NO REMEDY FOR THE RECALL. HOW LONG TO WE AS THE CONSUMER HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE PROBLEM TO BE REMEDIED?

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000.
THERE IS NO REMEDY FOR RECALL CAMPAIGN #162 WHICH I WOULD CONSIDER TO BE A FAIRLY SERIOUS ISSUE WITH THE ENGINE. NOTHING HAS HAPPENED YET BUT I DON'T WANT TO WAIT FOR IT EITHER.

CAR LOSES POWER WHEN GOING INTO A TURN AND WHEN DRIVING LONG DISTANCE ON OPEN HIGH WAY , SOMETIMES IT'S LIKE THE CAR IS APPLYING BREAKS BY IT SELF , THEN JUST TAKES OFF LIKE YOU HAVE YOUR FOOT FULL FORCE ON THE GAS PUDDLE . BREAK LIGHTS AND HEAD LIGHTS GO OUT EVERY TWO MONTHS.
CAR HAS BEGUN RANDOMLY AND UNPREDICTABLY "STALLING" WHILE IN MOTION. JUST SIMPLY STOPS MOVING FORWARD FOR A FEW SECONDS , NOT RESPONDING TO GAS PEDAL . THIS HAS BEEN BOTH AS CAR STARTS FROM STOPPED POSITION AS WELL AS DURING CRUISING. BECAUSE MOST OF OUR DRIVING IS CITY, WE DO NOT KNOW IF CAR WILL STALL AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND WE ARE AFRAID TO DRIVE ON HIGHWAYS NOW. HUNDAI WILL NOT ATTEMPT ANY REPAIR BECAUSE THEY CANNOT DOCUMENT THE PROBLEM. WE FEEL IT IS EITHER A BAD COMPUTER OR A TRANSMISSION ISSUE. ON APRIL 4, 2017 I WAS DRIVING DOWN A BUSY STREET IN NOON TRAFFIC, WHEN MY SONATA LOST POWER. STARTLED, I TRIED TO RE-START IT AND IT WOULD NOT MAKE A NOISE. TURNED ON FLASHERS AND CALLED FOR TOW. ONCE THE CAR WAS IN MY DRIVEWAY IT TRIED TO START IT AGAIN, AND IT TURNED OVER ONCE AND WENT SILENT. MY SON IS A TRAINED MECHANIC, SO HE CAME FOR THE WEEKEND AND IT STARTED FOR HIM. SO, HE PUT IT IN GEAR AND THE ENGINE BEGAN MAKEING PINGING/TAPPING NOISE. HE WAS GOING TO BRING HIS DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT THIS COMING WEEKEND AS HE SUSPECTED MAJOR ENGINE ISSUES. I FOUND OUT ON MONDAY, APRIL 10, 2017 FROM A CONSUMER LAW ATTORNEY AT OUR OFFICE THAT THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL ON 2013 SONATAS AND OTHER MODELS FOR ENGINE FAILURE. A HOLE WAS TORN IN THE ENGINE BLOCK DURING NORMAL STRAIGHT HIGHWAY DRIVING USE. ENGINE WAS DEEMED UNUSABLE BY REPAIR SHOP AND IS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING REPLACED.
2013 HYUNDAI SONATA BURNING OIL. AT 83,000 MILES WENT IN FOR OIL CHANGE (BEFORE IT WAS DUE) ALERTED TO THE FACT THAT THERE WERE ONLY DROPS LEFT ON OIL DIPSTICK.( NO WARNING LIGHT CAME ON) AGREED TO HAVE FULL SYNTHETIC OIL PLACED. AT THE SAME TIME THAT OCCURRED I NOTED DIFFICULTY GETTING THE CAR OUT OF PARK. DRIVER HAD TO USE THE MANUAL OVERRIDE TO GET THE CAR OUT OF PARK MODE AND INTO DRIVE. CAR WAS STATIONARY AT 84,660 MILES WENT BACK TO HAVE OIL CHECKED AGAIN. OIL WAS DOWN 1.5 QUARTS.

THE CAR HAS APPROXIMATELY 29,600 MILES ON IT. AND THE PRIOR WEEK I HAD AN OIL CHANGE PERFORMED AT A HYUNDAI DEALER. THE DEALER IT WAS TOWED TOLD ME I NEED A NEW ENGINE. IT IS NOW A WEEK AND I AM STILL WAITING ON HYUNDAI TO APPROVE A WARRANTY CLAIM ON THE ENGINE.

AT 124,000 MILES (4000 MILES AFTER THE WARRANTY RAN OUT), MY CAR STARTED BURNING ABOUT ONE QUART AFTER EACH 1000 MILES DRIVEN. I HAVE CHANGED MY OIL RELIGIOUSLY AFTER EVERY 3,000 - 5,000 MILES. MY MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT THE CAR HAD BURNED MOST OF ITS OIL AT A 3,000 MILE OIL CHANGE. HE ALSO SAID THAT THERE WERE METAL SHAVINGS IN THE OIL. THIS IS CONSISTENT WITH A PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN WIDELY REPORTED ON THIS ENGINE.
WHEN I START MY CAR, PUT IT IN DRIVE, AND PROCEED, THE CAR WILL JERL.AS.IFNITS STRUGGLING TO CHANGE GEARS.IT USUALLY STOPS AFTER A MINUTE OR SO. IT DOESNT ALWAYS HAPPEN, BUT ITS OCCURED TWICE TODAY AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FINALLY CAME ON. IM UP TO DATE ON MY OIL CHANGES, HAVE HAD MY TRANSMISSION FLUIDS FLUSHED AND THE PROBLEM STILL PERSISTS. IT SHOWS THAT THERE ARE NO ACTIVE RECALLS, HOWEVER IVE HEARD FROM NUMEROUS PEOPLE THAT THESE CARS ARE KNOWN FOR ENGINE PROBLEMS.

I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS ELECTRICAL ISSUES WITH MY 2013 SONATA. FIRST THE RADIO STOPPED WORKING SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASE. DEALER REPLACED, NO ISSUES. HAPPENED A SECOND TIME, REPLACED AGAIN. MY HEADLIGHTS HAVE BEEN REPLACED 3 OR 4 TIMES EACH AND TAIL LIGHTS TWICE. BIGGEST ISSUE HAS BEEN THE ELECTRIC DOOR LOCK ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE - IT DOES NOT LOCK USING THE FOB OR THE EXTERIOR DOOR HANDLE BUTTON. DEALER AT FIRST TRIED TO TELL ME I WAS NUTS, IN A VERY CONDESCENDING MANNER, AND THEN HE EXPERIENCED IT. THE TRANSPONDER IN THE DOOR LOCK HAS BEEN REPLACED 5 TIMES. THE LAST TIME, THEY HAD TO CALL JAPAN HYUNDAI AND TROUBLESHOOT THE ISSUE. THEY HAD MY CAR FOR A WEEK BEFORE THEY DETERMINED THAT THE ACTUATOR WAS SHORTING OUT THE LOCK TRANSPONDER, SO THEY REPLACED THAT AND IT WORKED THE LONGEST IT EVER HAS, PROBABLY ABOUT 6 MONTHS. NOW HOWEVER THE...
MY CAR HAD BEEN HAVING ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS AND TODAY I MADE AN APPOINTMENT TO GET IT REPAIRED AND 5 MINUTES LATER THE VAST SHUTS OFF AND WON'T TURN ON ANYMORE. THE DEALER SAUSAGE IT'S BECAUSE OF RODENTS EATING MY WIRING. AND AFTER A LITTLE RESEARCH I COME TO FIND OUT THE WIRING IS MADE OF SOY-BASED MATERIAL. APPARENTLY RODENTS LOVE TO EAT THRU THEM. STALLING ENGINE AND SPEED CRUSE CONTROL, IF YOU PUT THE SPEED CONTROL ON 70MPH, IT SHOWS YOUR AT 65 MPH AND TRASMISSION; WHILE ON MOTION AT 20MPH AND WHILE ACCELERATING FROM A STOP AT A STEADY INCREASE IN SPEED AND IT DECELEARTES BY ITSELF.

HAD IT TAKEN TO GARAGE TO BE TOLD THE WRIST PIN BROKE ON CYLINDER 1 CAUSING INTERNAL DAMAGE AND ENGINE WOULD NEED REPLACED AT A COST OF ABOUT $4500 FOR A USED ENGINE. HAVE 129000 MILE WHICH ARE 65% ALL HIGHWAY MILES. HYUNDAI SENT NOTICE OF INTERNAL ENGINE ISSUES RIGHT AFTER THE CAR HIT 120000 MILES. INTERESTING TIMING. RECOMMEND NHTSA FORCE HYUNDAI TO MAKE THESE ISSUE RIGHT WITH OWNERS.
