The car has 77k miles on it and has received regular maintenance and oil changes at or around every 5k miles. It was brought to the dealership after the engine was making noises and a check engine light came on. This is where they diagnosed it with a timing chain issue and metal shards in all of the engine fluids. We are the second owners of the car and because it was out of Hyundai’s warranty they would not cover it, leaving us with a $15000 lemon. Without getting it repaired, the engine can stall or combust at any time. There is no reason why this engine should need to be replaced other than faulty parts produced by Hyundai.

I wrote two documents outlining my complaint and information about the service on this vehicle that might be helpful in understanding the big picture. I have filed a consumer complaint with the Attorney General's Office. They suggested I also file a complaint with NHTSA. I have uploaded my written statements and supporting evidence for this complaint. There was no fire in the vehicle but there was so much smoke coming from the engine the person driving could not see the rode, other vehicles, or a clear path to safely get the car off the freeway. Luckily she was able to move the car onto the shoulder of the rode as she was driving in the far left lane. She did not crash the vehicle into the median.

11/06/2023 I was driving down the hwy when I heard a loud knocking sound coming from the engine, so stopped at a gas station only to find out that the engine had no oil in the motor and the oil warning light did not come on and the engine started losing power so we had it towed to a dealership to have them diagnose the problem and they said we are going to have to put a new engine in the vehicle in which I'm going to have to do cause I have a loan on this vehicle. Good thing we were getting off the freeway before the vehicle started to loose power and catch us right in the middle of traffic. I was not alone in the vehicle at the time of this issue.

2017 Hyundai Santa Fe 7 seater died from engine failure due to no oil. Oil was checked by Earnhardt Hyundai 4,000 miles/10 months prior. Car never gave any indication that oil was needed or engine problem was imminent. It just died in the HOV lane and would not start up. Obviously it's very dangerous and unnerving when your car just stops out of the blue. Also since it's past 100,000 miles Hyundai is not offering any help with engine repair. On the internet there are numerous reports of this same thing happening to other 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe owners.

While driving home one day my car lost all power. All the warning lights on the dash came on and then my car was dead. I managed to safely get off the road but had trouble getting the car to stop. Once stopped safely, my car would not restart. It would crank but would not turn over. My car ended having to be taken to the dealer for diagnostic, only to be told me engine was seized. My car had 58,415 miles on it. No indication that there was anything wrong with the engine.

In October of 2022 my check engine light came on when I took it to Oreily's error code P1326. When I searched code it was part of a recall indicating excessive connecting rod bearing wear. I called Hyundai of Del Rio which is about 80 miles from where I live. They told me to bring it in to address the issue they fixed the issue and advised me that there was an additional recall for the breaks. (recall 22V056000) They told me the parts were ordered and they would call me when the parts arrived. Now October 2023 my check engine light is on once again, called Hyundai Corporate and opened a case with them. They told me to take it to the dealership, called the dealership and asked for a tow they said they did not have one available. They advised me to get a tow and a rental...

I purchased this vehicle 05/05/2019 as a certified pre-owned vehicle from the dealership. I have kept regular maintenance on the car. Three same day of purchase, the engine quit as I was driving it. I was making a left hand turn and it quit while I was in the intersection. My children were in the car. Hyundai replaced the engine, but about a year and half later, that engine did the exact same thing. This time I was coming off the freeway. I can't imagine the possibilities if this had happened while on the freeway. Now, the engine is making the same sound as with the first two engines. I took it to Hyundai, and they claim it's normal. The car has issues where I will be trying to safely merge into traffic and it will hesitate. There are multiple intermittent issues that occur, but the scariest is knowing how...

Vehicle has 139k miles, regular maintenance, and engine had catastrophic failure at city street speeds when crankshaft and/or connecting rods failed. Hyundai advises that our vehicle VIN is not covered by their recall for this same issue. They say it only pertained to a small footprint of that manufacturing year. We still owe several years on this vehicle, and the cost to replace engine (with an equally problematic engine) will cost almost as much as we still owe, basically causing us to purchase the car twice. There should be some kind of recourse on these 3.3l engines with all the same issues. Reddit is full of people with the exact same issues. Our local shop quoted us at $11k to replace the engine.

Engine failed while driving. No warning lights. No check engine lights. Lost complete power whole driving at normal speeds. Complete engine failure. Regualr maintenance records kept. 104k miles

I was driving my 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe with 70,039 miles on the odometer. The engine shut off without warning while I was driving it. No check engine or any indication of a problem was displayed. This created a dangerous situation for myself and my 5-year-old daughter as I had no choice but to manage to push the vehicle out of the roadway to a safe place without power steering. Exiting the vehicle with a child in a car seat was equally dangerous and not a viable option. Capital Hyundai in San Jose CA inspected the engine and reported the engine siezed and required replacement.

I bought the vehicle used and have had it for less than 2 months (to the date of the incident). I checked the oil before a long drive which was 2 weeks before the incident. Oil was topped off and looked and smelled fresh. I began to notice a knock followed by a check engine light for camshaft position sensor. I shut the car off immediately. When I checked the dipstick (2 weeks after our trip) there was not a drop on the dipstick. There are no signs of oil leaks to be seen. I drained what was left in the crankcase (less than a quart) and it was silver, thick, with metal flakes all in it. I refilled the crankcase and did not solve the knock (I ran it for 2 seconds after refilling it to test it). I contacted Hyundai with the issue and they asked that we...

I was driving down the freeway when all the hazard lights came on, the rpms went all the way to 6000 rpms and then I had no acceleration when I pressed the gas pedal. I somehow made it over to the right lane and pulled over. The car would not restart so I had a tow truck take it to the dealership. Hyundai will not honor their warranty because I couldn't come up with the receipts for my oil and filters. The engine, Theta II, is well known to consume too much oil and sieze engines.

Engine made knocking noises and was towed to a mechanic. Mechanic discovered metal shards in the oil pan and all signs pointed to being well maintained. We bought used from CarMax and are the 2nd owners. Mechanics best guess is engine failure due to defect and high oil consumption with no signs of leaks. No codes, no check engine light, no low oil pressure light. No warning. Oil changes were completed by us and valvoline at regular intervals. Safety risk of engine failure while driving and causing an accident. Car was successfully pulled to the side of the road. Hyundai dealership unable to help with repair assistance as we are second owners and warranty did not transfer. Researched community chat forums and this seems to be a common issue for this engine to fail.

Morning of October 16th, wife said engine "clicked" at start and then stopped at idle. I checked oil as it had been changed week prior and all levels were normal, then performed diagnostic with Carista tool and app, no codes. That evening while on the way to my 4 year olds practice, the car stopped in a lane of travel on a main cross town thoroughfare in Charlotte NC in rush hour, my wife, 4 year old, and 1 year old in the car. No light or indicators AT ALL ever came on NOTHING, no check engine light, nothing. Had it towed to local shop and he said this is the 10th or 11th Santa Fe we have seen with the V6, it most likely is the motor. So he does prelim diagnostic and suspects a thrown bearing and recommended we tow to Hyundai dealership, just at 70k, how is...

Engine light came on and then the engine lost power and had to be towed to dealership. Dealership said it was internal engine failure. Requested oil change documents for the past 6 years. First/original owner and vehicle only has 74,139 miles on it.

Engine failure. The vehicle was towed to Crenshaw Hyundai in Burlington, NC. Crenshaw Hyundai advised me the engine needed to be replaced due to rod failure. I cannot confirm if the parts are available for inspection. Engine failure while driving causing a stall. The problem has been verbally confirmed to me by Crenshaw Hyundai. The problem has not been inspected by police, insurance representative, or anyone else other than Crenshaw Hyundai. There were no warning lamps displayed prior to failure of the engine.

We were driving down the road with zero warning noises started to come from the car and the entire car shut down. We drifted to the side of the road from the momentum. Tow truck was called and the mechanic states the engine is completely blown. How may people need to report before this is addressed?

I have had the 2017 hyundai santa fa for about 6 months. I've had regular maintenance on the vehicle and out of no where it got a loud knock and clunking noise. Upon researching I've found thousands or people with the same 3.3 engine as mine with the same exact problem. Maybe it's kind of the same deal going on as the 2016 engines. No there was not any lights on but now there is a engine light and loud knocking.

I had just had my inspection done 8/31/23 (96,759 miles), they checked all fluid levels as a curtesy and engine oil was fine. on 9/17/23 my vehicle went into safety mode and would not go over 40 mph. No engine oil lights or check engine lights came on. I pulled over and checked the oil and there was barely any. I added two quarts of oil and it started running fine immediately. The next morning, I checked the oil again and added another quart. On 9/19/23 I took it to have the oil changed (99,534 miles). On 9/22/23 the car started making a funny noise, pulled off the freeway and as we were trying to reach a safe spot to stop the engine blew a rod (100,004 miles). Again, no engine oil lights or check engine lights came on. This is a reoccurring theme in the research I have since...

The engine of my 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe started making a loud knocking sound on 9/29/2023. I took the car to a certified mechanic who said that the engine had “thrown a rod.” I researched the NHTSA website and found NHTSA Part 573 Safety Recall Report No. 17V-578 dated Sep 20, 2017. While I never received this notice, the Descriptive Information and Description Defect mirror the problem with my car exactly. The recall was for 3.3L “Lambda” engines produced at the Asan Plant (Korea) between January 26, 2017 and February 13, 2017. My car was produced February 7, 2017.

At approximately 74,000 miles, our 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Ultimate with the 3.3L V6 exhibited a total loss of power from the engine, while driving at non-highway speeds. As the vehicle decelerated to pull off the road, a catastrophic engine failure occurred with loss of all power and drivability. The vehicle was towed to our local repair shop, where it was diagnosed to need a full engine replacement. Maintenance was regularly performed on the vehicle, with no check engine lights or other diagnostic codes or warnings at the time of the incident. Oil changes and all other maintenance had been performed regularly by me or at the local dealership.

When driving vehicle it turns off while driving. It simply cuts off. It has done this at least 3 times already.

During normal acceleration, the vehicle lost all power. I was able to coast to a safe stop. However, this occurred while accelerating to merge on to a major highway. Fortunately, I was able to navigate the vehicle safely to the shoulder. The vehicle would not turn on again. After towing the vehicle to a Hyundai dealership, it was determined that the engine had seized. This vehicle has been maintained regularly according to manufacturer recommendations, and has never had any negative symptoms or issues prior to this engine seizing up. No engine warning lights, no messages, nor any abnormal noises during engine operation prior to the event.

On interstate 77 in west virginia when vehicle slowed, whent into Beckley, WV. Stopped at Autozone checked oil was OK, check engine light 0018 ( crankshaft position sensor), started to go to Beckley Hyundai about 2 miles away. Engine quit before getting there. Got tow to dealer who said engine seized and needs new motor. (Car has 78,000 miles) Apparently this has happened to a lot of 2017 Santa fe. Hyundai will not pay for repairs. The 3.3L G6DF motor has been discontinued, and rebuilt motors are in short supply, as so many other Santa Fe are waiting for motors. Hyundai had a recall of 2017 Santa Fe built between Jan. 26 - Feb. 13 because of engine failures, but problem appears to be wider than that.

The oil leaks every time I brake, and car engine and brakes get hot.

Paid off my vehicle at the end of 2022. Beginning of 2023, it started knocking. Had it towed to the Dealership and come to find out, the engine needed to be replaced. Well we had them replace it while I tried working with Hyundai. Explained that my 2017 has the 3.3 engine. Only 420 vehicles were recalled. However, mine was not one of them. It’s the exact thing that was happening with the recall vehicles. Now they want to charge me another $11,000 to get it back from the dealership. This is clearly a problem but they won’t assist.

After changing my oil, engine started knocking and now car has faulty engine that is very expensive to replace.
#11546167 |
Engine failure, crankshaft sensory did not go off and it will need a brand new engine. Only 94k miles

In June, I was driving my Santa Fe down the highway with my children when it suddenly died. I had no control over the vehicle. There were no warning lights on, my engine temp was not high. I was able to get it off to the side of the road. I found that the oil was almost completely empty even though I have regular oil changes and have had no leaks. I took my vehicle to Vern Eddy on Sioux City, IA, where I originally bought this vehicle. (I bought this new) They confirmed it was the rod bearings. Which is a known manufacturers defect in many of their engines that are being recalled however, not in this particular model so, they are refusing to fix it. I've looked online and seen hundreds of others with this exact engine having the exact same issue. I just want them to fix...

I was driving the car and then all of a sudden I was getting a lot vibrations. It was very hard to control the car. I pulled over and had it tow to the dealer I bought it from, Herb Chambers Honda of Westborough, Massachusetts. They told me it was the fuel injection system. I had replaced, and then the same thing happened again, they sent me to Herb Chambers Hyundai of Auburn. They told me it is the engine. They refused to replace it.

Car stopped suddenly and when I went to check, the oil had been completely depleted. The shop says the engine failed, most likely because the oil had evaporated. Low mileage, well maintained, so the car has a defect that can be life threatening. Thankfully, for me, it stopped in a quiet road and had to be towed. This could have happened in busy traffic and caused a bad accident.

I've owned my 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe 3.3L V6 since late 2021. I haven't noticed it using oil. Stopped at a traffic light, the engine lost power. It was so scary! No warning lights were on my dash. I was thankful to not be rear-ended...although I could have filed an insurance claim if I had been. As it is, my insurance says it is a 'mechanical failure.' The car would not start but luckily some strangers pushed me out of the highway. I tried two different jumper cables and was able to roll up my windows but not much else. The car was towed back to hometown. At a repair shop, the mechanic told me the engine was locked. It has 97,000 miles on it and I'm the second owner so the 100K warranty doesn't apply to me. I called Hyundai and they instructed me to have the car towed...

Driving down the highway and vehicle just shut off at a stop light. No lights of any kind on the dashboard. Started it up stayed running, checked all the gages, everything was normal. Was waiting at the red light and it turned off again. When I started it up again noticed that the oil light was on longer than the other lights, but it went out. Pulled over and checked the oil, no oil on the dip stick. Put 2 quarts of oil in it and tried to limp home. Turned off again and wouldn't restart. No warning lights. Took it to a dealership and was told the engine was seized and they knew about the oil consumption issue, but they told me that 3.3L engines weren't covered. No I still have half my car to pay for and engine replacement costs as much as the car is worth. I...

My ‘17 Santa Fe has been well taken care of with regular oil changes and we have kept up with the recommended maintenance. While driving on 8/17/2023 the car started to struggle to accelerate and I heard a knocking sound. Within moments there was total engine and power failure and I had to quickly get the vehicle off the road to avoid being rear ended. There were no warning lights on until the moment it was dying. The battery light, check engine light, and oil light came on, but then the vehicle had quickly lost all power immediately after. Once it was towed to Meineke and looked over by the mechanics there it was determined that it needs a new engine and that it had very, very little oil in it.

I've owned my 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe 3.3L V6 since 2017, the last year, the engine has been consuming oil at a higher rate than normal. Performed an oil change in early June, it has burned 3 quarts of oil in two months. Last Thursday, 08/17/2023, the engine started knocking bad, and it lost power as the vehicle was being parked. Towed to a repair shop, waiting on inspection but it sounds like a camshaft knock, but it's terrible. It has 103,000 miles on it and I just paid it off last year. I don't understand how this engine isn't being recalled like the other Hyundai models. I have to say that I will no longer purchase Hyundai's or recommend them to anyone else.
#11539400 |
Blown engine in the middle of the highway. The car have been consuming excessive amounts of oil. I though that, if the car has the oil change done more often, the engine would be fine, but that was not the case.
#11538925 |
Previous to the day of this incident there was no check engine light showing. I was driving and heard a knocking /grinding sound that progressively got worse. I was trying to get home and the engine suddenly died , all of the warning lights came on and the engine couldn’t start. Took it to the dealership. The third party extended warranty didn’t cover it because all of the oil was missing ( no oil leak was present). Still waiting to see if the dealership will repair.

Had oil changed July 5, 2023, Aug. 14 check engine light came on. Took it to shop and was told Hyundai vehicles are burning oil in the engine and the diagnostic code came back as Catalytic Convert and had to add oil. Have oil spots all over my drive so was told to check oil and make sure it's not low and see if light comes back on. Repair shop checked for recalls and found none for this car, yet. Daughter has 2013 Kia Rio with same problem for past couple of years. Why do recalls take so long?
#11538607 |
While driving on the highway my engine seized up and stopped working altogether. My dashboard went completely red with warning lights and I could get to the side of the road to call for assistance. The day prior while getting an oil change I was told by the mechanic that some Hyundai cars have been consuming oil quickly and that I had less than a quart left while I just was a little of the 3000-mile mark. The previous oil change I was also told I was at a very low level as well. I called the dealership about the concern and they were willing to run some tests on the car, but that afternoon the engine seized up. The car was towed back to the dealership and I was able to have the engine replaced by the manufacturer. I was very concerned for our safety when the incident happened...

Upon approaching stop sign, the vehicle stalled and after restart, the vehicle ceased acceleration at intervals. This caused the vehicle to impede/slow traffic during journey. Again, at stop light, the vehicle stalled and “all” warning lights appeared. The engine failed to restart and the vehicle was towed from traffic due to engine failure. The vehicle is a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.4 with 116,000 miles. An Engine Class Settlement has been established for the model years 2010-2012 with this same issue. The vehicle will be towed to a dealership for inspection, confirmation and repair. I felt the need to make an incident report thinking maybe other reports have been filed, also, and the manufacturer reusing to admit to problem issues.

My 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe is excellently maintained with 130,000 miles on it with a faulty rod requiring engine replacement. There is a safety recall #168 for the exact same failure on the same year make and model and engine but Hyundai will not cover my engine as this recall is vin specific and mine does not qualify. Now left a loan on a car that I cannot drive.

On May 2023, while my husband was taking my daughter to go to school with 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe, he noticed engine knocking noises emanating from the engine compartment. Shortly after, the vehicle's performance significantly deteriorated, and the check engine light illuminated on the dashboard, and the engine shut down. Get the car towed to the nearest auto service, the mechanic told me that there’s an engine failure as result of abnormal oil consumption causing internal damage and need to be fixed by Hyundai. I called Hyundai USA, and was told that in order to have it covered under the warranty, it needed to be repaired by an authorized dealer. However, no authorized dealer had an available appointment for at least 2 months. Finally after 2 months, I had the car towed to the authorized Hyundai service center for diagnosis and repairs. Upon examination by the certified technicians at the...

About two months ago my son was driving home and noticed the oil light flash on and off quickly while he was driving. He immediately brought the car to our regular mechanic who instructed him to just check the oil "it might be a little low"- When my son arrived home we checked the oil and the oil was down 3+quarts. There is no engine oil leak, and the oil in the car had been changed recently and has also been changed every 3-5K miles per the manufacturers recommendation. We did a bit of research and learned that this is a known problem for thousands of Hyundai owners and that Hyundai recommended we start a case with them. We did. We had an oil consumption test performed during which we were told not to check the oil at all ourselves or it would "ruin the test". We were then told...

My Santa Fe has just under 87,000 miles on the engine and has developed a knock. No check engine light was ever illuminated. We scheduled the vehicle for an inspection at the dealer. After a week, we were informed that we had a connecting rod bearing failure. We purchased this car second hand at 74,000 miles and have put 2 oil changes on it since owning it. This car is the primary vehicle for my wife and if this rod would have locked up while driving, it could have put my entire family at risk.

While driving uphill at 40 mph the car would not accelerate and the mph began slipping down to 30. There were no warning lights during or before this and no other changes while driving. A clicking/rattling noise became louder as I drove on. I made it up the hill and to the next stop light. When trying to accelerate, the vehicle would not go past 20mph and the clicking/rattling noise was very loud. I drove approximately 2 miles to get home. The next day at the dealership they stated I needed a new engine and there was no oil in the engine. I am up to date on my oil changes and never once was notified my engine had a problem during any of the inspections. We had to replace the the transmission around 90,000 miles. The car currently has approximately 113,000 miles.

2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.4L automatic, took the car in for recall service. The following recall services were completed: (23-01-014H-5), (23-01-004H), (20-01-006H), (#17-01-050), (17-01-002). Service completed on 07/25/23, car was in perfect working order prior to recall service. Picked car up from dealer on the afternoon of 07/25/23, drove about 5 miles home. Next day (07/26/23), drove car about 20 miles and engine light came on. Took back to dealership 07/26/23 at about 3pm, stated nothing they did would cause engine light to come on and wanted me to leave with vehicle without checking it. Said 8/1/23 would be the earliest the could look at it to even check the code. Refused to leave with car in that state so they did check the code and stated it was a catalytic converter code and that mine might be going out. Stated that nothing was wrong with my car prior...

The engine was making a knocking sound and the check engine light came on. I did not have the time to get it to a mechanic (approx 2 days of driving with knocking) before the knocking stopped and the engine stopped. The car stalled out in the middle of the street and I was able to coast to a complete stop on the side of the road and push it to safely back home.

This is an OIL CONSUMPTION & ENGINE FAILRE Car was being serviced by Hyundai for oil consumption test, and failed, 1 quart of oil consumed every 400 miles. On 7/23/23, engine failed on PA turnpike while travelling 70 MPH, and almost caused an accident. At 65k miles Hyundai agreed to to conduct oil consumption test, and submit for engine replacement, First part of oil consumption test failed, and car was set for engine under Hyundai warranty, but 2 days prior to cleaning engin failed. Engine has had high pressure fuel pump replaced, and I reported gas smell from oil Catalytic convertor was replaced @ 55k miles, as oil consumed burned out convertor. Now that the engine valves are burned, Hyundai is not honoring the good faith engine replacement.

Catastrophic engine failure at 86,200 miles. Engine making chugging and ticking sound and metal flakes in oil. Normal oils changes at Hyundai dealers every 5-6k miles (or 6 months). Hyundai wouldn’t cover because 2nd owner (should have covered up 100k power train.
