Vehicle gave no indication oil level was low. Traveling I24 East, the vehicle began to stall, preventing any speed above 40MPH. After settling along the shoulder of the highway I checked the Oil reservoir which was completely empty. No indication was given that Oil was needed. Vehicle had not met the Month or Milage requirement for needed oil change.
While driving at approximately 70MPH. The car went into limp mode. slowing down and eventually coming to a stop, after towing the car to a mechanic. we found out that a valve broke in the cylinder head damaging the Cylinder and engine block. Engine and Cylinder head needs to be replaced.
Oil compsumption noted and leakage noted by mechanic. Informed me could cause a fire in engine compartment. Unsafe to drive. I rented a car. . Engine burning oil, high oil consumption, oil leak. Reported to Hyundai. Took vehicle to Kerry Hyundai, Alexandria, Ky. Was informed that Hyundai won’t take care of it. Filed a complaint. Mediation through The Better Business Burrau. Claim was denied. I was not driving the car for a couple weeks. I am guardian of 2 school age children transporting to and from school and activities and was concerned for our safety. Took vehicle to Superior Hyundai, Cincinnati, Ohio for an oil change and reported an oil leak. Was informed there was no oil leak. Had oil changes at Valvoline, Newport,Ky, No report of oil leak. Walmart, Ft Wright ,Ky pointed out leak from oil pan. Replaced oil pan. Check engine light came on. Took vehicle to...
This vehicle hit 100,000 miles and starting not running normally. After stalling out in the middle of an interstate with a baby and elderly parent, the car had to be towed to a mechanic. Mechanic said the internal engine is failing, timing belt, timing crankshaft are going along with excessive oil consumption. The check engine light came on directly before stalling and breaking down which gave no time to try to pull off the road. Hyundai will not help seeing as how this vehicle has TWO warranty’s that expired just 1k miles ago. This is a danger to us, the owners, because we could’ve easily been involved in a major accident on an interstate due to this engine failing out of the blue. The manufacturer has not diagnosed the issues because they want $250/hr to diagnose.
I first brought my car into a Hyundai certified service center after my car shook violently and my check engine light started flashing at me. I had to pull over on the side of a busy highway which is a safety risk on it's own. the Hyundai service center "fixed" my car and I was on my way. this was In September of 2023. on February 14th 2024 the same thing happened leaving me stranded on the side of another busy highway during rush hour traffic. I got the car towed to a dealer and they are telling me I need to replace my engine since there is a malfunction with the exact same parts that they replaced in September. In September They pretty much rebuilt my engine and now, less then 6 months later, they are telling me my engine is shot and needs to be replaced. How could...
While driving my 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport at approx 50 mph, i notice the vehicle sputtering & slightly jerking as I was going up an incline on a tall bridge. I barely made it to the top when the engine light came on & the engine failed & thankfully was able to coast downhill & pull off on the side of the road. I tried several times to restart the car to no avail. I had the vehicle towed to my mechanics shop. I had already been warned by them during an oil change that my vehicle was using excessive oil & to be watchful of that which I had been. I was using about 2 quarts of oil per week prior to t he engine failing. There were NO LEAKS, the oil was just blowing through. After changing all cylinders, the engine was still not working and I...
While driving in rush hour on interstate 75 on my way to work, my 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe completely shut off without any warning lights or indication of any problems. I had to drift without power in my vehicle to the far right shoulder over 4 lanes of traffic. I was towed to a Hyundai dealership who confirmed my engine seized due to a rod bearing issue. A rod was thrown due to engine wearing bear.
Urgent Petition for Rulemaking and Safety Investigation into Hyundai 3.3L V6 Lambda II Engine Failures. See Attachment For Details
1. the emission control symbol has come on 2 or 3 times recently, mechanic says they don't show a problem and owner's manual says not to drive until this problem has been resolved. I have oil leaking on driveway, had it back in 3 times for that and they don't find anything. I have had fuse for accessories replaced twice and first time I try to charge phone it blows the fuse. Had this car since 2019.
This incident involved our 2017 Sante Fe XL V6 with Lamda II engine with 61,000 miles. Up until this incident, we have had zero issues or warnings from the car of any problems. My husband was driving and slowing as he was approaching a light, while without any warning, the car stopped responding (electrical shutoff and gas would not accelerate). This was in the middle of a two-lane road with speed limits of approximately 40mph. Luckily, there were no others around him at the time of the incident. Upon taking it to an independent dealer, they diagnosed the issue with an engine knock and told us we needed a new engine. After transporting to the Hyundai dealer, they indicated it was a timing issue and needed to replace all CVVT and timing components. They did not investigate the knocking sound and admitted the repair of the CVVT could still result...
Catastrophic engine failure while driving - engine rod punched a hole through the engine. Up to date on oil changes, no lights on until it happened.
The vehicle has a very significant oil consumption issue. We are putting oil in every couple weeks but there is no sign of oil leaking out of the car. While driving the car on the highway one day, the car started to sputter and shake badly. We took the car to a mechanic and we were told the compression in #4 was shot. We just had the car inspected at the local dealership a month prior and nothing was indicated as being wrong.
Findings from Rick Case Hyundai Service Department in Duluth Ga: Intake sprocket came apart. Bolts sheared off causing metal to go through the engine, with sprockets rubbing on timing cover. Recommendation from Rick Case Hyundai service department to replace the engine.
I loved my 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe and faithfully got my oil changes. In [XXX] days started my car and heard a knocking noise as I drive home the noise got louder and louder. I took it to a Hyundai dealer on 12/21/23 and dealer said Rod bearings failed and I need a new engine and I had to pay $12K cause it’s out of warranty. The engine is only 6 years old and should not fail with routine maintenance. Hyundai will do nothing. Hyundai had a recall on engines built 1/26/17-2/13/17 and my car was manufactured on [XXX] - just [XXX] days before and has the same exact problem as the recall but they won’t replace my engine. [XXX] it didn’t lock up and cause an accident while I was driving the car. There are many others with this failing Lambda 3.3 engine and we need help! [XXX] INFORMATION...
Noticed a slight loss of power on a 4 hour road trip. When we stopped for gas the vehicle was shaking at lower rpm and the engine light came on at that point. I took it to a mechanic within 45mins of noticing the issue and it was scanned and a few other tests. Mechanic said cylinder 6 was misfiring, spark plug was covered in oil and compression test showed less than 20 psi. He said we were lucky to make it into town like that and we did not get stranded as there is poor service where we were. I had to get the vehicle towed approx 300km and sort out rides for my family along with a vehicle full of hockey gear and a weekends worth of clothes food. The problem has not self corrected. I will be taking it to my local mechanic to get a 2nd...
On [XXX], I was driving southbound on the highway near Elizabeth City, NC when all of a sudden, my vehicle decelerated from 65 mph to 20 mph (limp mode) with no warning except for the sudden onset of a knocking noise in the engine compartment and the check engine light coming on immediately before entering limp mode. I was in the passing lane and thankfully was able to safely make it to the shoulder of the road. I had the vehicle towed to an independent engine and transmission shop where I was informed that the timing chain had caused severe damage to the engine, including metal shavings in the fluids. I had just had an oil change 3 days prior and am the second owner of the vehicle. It only has approximately 78,500 miles on it and I have only owned it for three months. I have insured that all...
Engine seized while driving down the highway. No warning, check engine, etc. indicators preceded the incident. Vehicle has <80,000 miles on the engine. I am the original owner.
My engine randomly and failed one evening that we were driving. It made an Odd sound as we were driving 35 mph down a hill and it just shut off completely. After taking it to the dealership we bought it from we were told the engine needed replaced. We still owe $14,000 on this car and it only had 71,000 miles on it. There were no indications that this was going to happen, no warning signs or signals. This vehicle was maintained regularly and very well.
I own a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe and have noticed excessive oil consumption in between regularly, scheduled oil changes with my personal mechanic for the past 8-9 months. At NO TIME did any error or sensor codes or warning lights come on. At one point, it was down 5 qts of oil! I reached out to my local dealership for an oil consumption test, but they were booked out and I was told to watch it. The service rep indicated since I had an extended warranty, the powertrain is good for up to 100,000 miles. On Nov. 24, 2023, without any warning sensors going off, the engine suddenly went into limp mode - no acceleration from 70 mph to approx. 45 mph on Hwy. 5. We immediately exited and when we restarted the engine, the check engine light came on. We immediately called AAA to tow our car home 90...
Like many others, my 2017 V6 Santa Fe is afflicted with the excess oil consumption flaw, and has sustained damage beyond repair. Same as others, NO warning whatsoever, no check engine or oil light came on. After noticing a clicking/rattling noise when accelerating, took to my mechanic. Four of the six quarts of oil that was supposed to be in the engine had burned and consumed internally. At 124,000 miles so beyond warranty, and even though I contacted Hyundai they of course said no guarantee there would be any coverage or compensation, despite many others having the same issue. I'm grateful mine did not leave me stranded on the highway... Hyundai MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE for such a known and widespread flaw. Why no recall??
While driving on the highway, the engine cut out and died. It appears the engine seized. This is similar to the issues with the Santa Fe 2.4L engines, however this engine is a V6. According to a mechanic that inspected the engine, it appears that the engine had been burning engine oil, which ultimately led to the engine failure. There was no warning prior to engine failure. The engine failed while driving on the interstate, and the car coasted to a stop on the hard shoulder and would no longer start.
After 106,000 miles on a long trip home acceleration stopped working on the highway and heard a clanking noise. We had complete engine failure and were lucky enough to make it off the road safely. The engine can't be repaired or replaced and is out of warranty.
The rod bearings went out in the engine causing engine failure.
My Ex and I purchased a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited Ultimate 3.3L engine. We always took the vehicle to the dealership for any and all services. We paid off our loan on the vehicle mid 2022. In December of 2022, the vehicle died. No warning lights or signs of damage. Beginning of 2023 I had the vehicle towed to the dealership. I was told that the engine needed replaced. After researching, I discovered 420 of the same vehicle had been under RECALL campaign 168. I believe wholeheartedly that my VIN was missed during this recall, as the engine in my vehicle died for the exact same reason as the other 420 vehicles. This is a recall! I’ve been in contact with Hyundai and told that because the vehicle is no longer under “warranty”, it will not be covered. However, Federal Law says that any vehicle with a recall is...
On 11/6/ 2023, while drive on the turnpike my check engine light went on and vehicle went in limp mode. I was scared and felt unsafe as I did not know what was happening. Got vehicle to dealer and P1326 was the code. Vehicle needs new engine. BCT test failed. Hyundai not helpful even when documentation provided.
The engine in my 2017 Santa Fe failed without notice. Upon starting the vehicle on 12/12/23 it would not run and upon checking had burned through oil leaving none in engine. This resulted is burned out spark plugs and leaving the car no longer able to drive. I took vehicle to dealership where spark plugs were replaced and engine failed again on test drive with technician. Hyundai contacted multiple times and refused to asssit with repairs despite multiple engine failures.
The motor locked up with no warning and we lost all vehicle power and left us stranded. All maintenance and oil changes have been kept up with regularly. I have been reading up and Hyundai did a voluntary recall for only a few motors that were manufactured over about a 3-week period that were having this same issue. Apparently, our vehicle was not covered under that recall even though it is having the same problem. We had it towed to a dealership and they said that this is a known problem and they see this very often. We spoke to Hyundai and they told us that it was not a known problem and they were not going to warranty it because we were the second owners. Upon conducting some additional research, we found that this issue is known to occur in these vehicles. The internal bearings wear out between 80...
Hyundai Is aware of the connecting rod bearings inside the engine may wear prematurely, which can result in engine damage. However, when I contacted Hyundai about having this issue with my 2017 Santa Fe, they said my vehicle year does not qualify for the extended recall (10 years/ 120,000 miles) which they have on other vehicles years that are experience. My vehicle currently has 92525 miles. My complaint is I believe Hyundai should cover my 2017 vehicle, knowing that they have this issue with their engine. Any enforcement action or advice that NHTSA can provide would be appreciated. Sincerely, [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Engine failed due to excessive oil consumption while driving. Safety was put at risk due to poor build leading to failure while driving. It has been inspected by the manufacturer and was determined it needed to be replaced entirely. Low engine oil light came on, replaced oil, then shortly after failed while driving, after codes disappeared.
Engine failed at 62k miles without any warnings lights or indication of an problem. The engine knocked and seized, creating incredibly unsafe driving conditions with ZERO indications from the car other than hearing the engine noise. The Hyundai dealer confirmed I need a new engine due to the knock, and it is not covered by any warranty as I am not the original owner and the warranty expired last year and at 60k miles.
Auto was being driven and upon getting to destination knocking/tapping sounds where heard coming from the engine compartment. No warning lights notification or issues prior.
2017 Santa Fe with 115k miles had its last oil change in June. It still has another 4k before it is due again. The motor started making strange noises. I checked the oil and had to add 4 quarts! Engine started knocking bad. Left me and my family stranded 2 hours from home. I had oil issues previously before my warranty went out. Hyundai is refusing to address the oil consumption issue and replace my motor. Please help! This isn’t right.
My engine failed with regular oil changes at less than 120k miles with NO warning. It was 9 at night and it completely shut down on the highway. The hazards, brake lights, etc were not operable! I was almost hit by traffic three times due to not being able to turn on hazards and brake lights not working. I could not even place the car in neutral. Thankfully, the local police department was finally able to assist me but it was a frightening experience and Hyundai is doing absolutely nothing about it.
Excessive oil consumption, loud knocking.
Oct 31 the car was diagnosed with very low to no oil. Dealership added oil and all problem went away. 1 month/2000 miles later, the car began to have a knocking sound while driving on the highway. I pulled over and the oil was low so I added oil to get my home. Re-entered the highway and the engine just stopped. I was able to pull safely to the side of the road.
after taking my Hyundai 2017 Santefe sport car to dealership and told them about engine being sluggish they replaced the sparkplugs and changed oil . Six week later the engine died as I was driving on a highway I was able to pullover but could have been worse. There was no warning lights it just died. Looking on line I seen that this company has had problems with engines failing and had a class action against them ( my vin was not part of that). Dealership never mentioned that this could happen to my car. I think the dealer was negligent in not informing me about potential problem. I now have no car to drive and I am still waiting for dealership to tell me what my options are.
My engine light has come on 5 times over last 6 months. Each time My car started hesitating as if it were going to just just stop in the the middle of the street. Each time I had it towed to dealership. The following were replaced: exhaust manifold, intake manifold, engine coil, head gasket. The oil consumption test could not be done because this occurred before it ever reached 1K. The engine is rapidly consuming oil. It is now at the dealership for the 5th time. Put 5 quarts of synthetic oil in car 3 days ago because dealership could not fit me in. Car began to suddenly decelerate again on MassPike . Fladhing engine light came on. Drove off ramp and had it towed. Waiting for a 5th diagnostic.
knocking noise. check engine light came on. took to my mechanic and its a total engine failure. ball bearings are loose and leaking oil and could have catastrophic damage at any moment.
Driving on highway going about 75 mph and engine powered down and went into limp mode and that is when check engine light came on. Had my kids and myself in the car and had to switch over multiple lanes at slow and unsafe speeds on highway with other vehicles traveling 70-80 mph. Have had oil consumption issues (go through a quart a week) that no dealer would look into unless covered by Hyundai. Diagnosed that cylinder 2 is dead in engine and engine is no good anymore. Only 107,000 on vehicle.
The engine failed all of the sudden going down the freeway at 70 miles per hour. The engine has been maintained and there were no issues with it. The engine is available for inspection. My life was put at risk as I was on the freeway and the engine stopped working all of the sudden, I actually avoided an accident while driving because of this issue. The vechile has not been inspected by the manufacture since it got towed to my apartment and my insurance will not cover mechanical issues so they have not inspected it. No lights engine lights were on prior to this incident. Please help me.
The engine head has cracked. It is very difficult to find a motor because it is such a common problem.
I was driving on the highway, and suddenly oil and battery light came on and engine stopped and I had to pull over. The only warning was the check engine light came on when I started it 10 minutes before the engine died.
The engine had oil consumption issues that were addressed with dealership. The engine then just seized up and stopped working one day while driving down the road.
While I was stopped at a stoplight turn lane in my 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe sport, smoke started to come out of my engine. I removed myself from the turn lane and got my car into a parking lot, and within a minute, flames appeared from the engine. I do not recall a warning light alerting me, as I was focused on getting the car to a safe place. I called 911 and the fire dept put out the flames as it consumed the front of my car. The whole engine area is toast, so not sure of the cause, and insurance will be processing the claim as a 100% loss. I was up to date on my service/recalls and the car had just hit 90,000 miles. We had recently checked fluid levels, so that was fine, but I did notice when driving the day before and that morning on...
Without any warning the car stopped running was able to pull over. Called for tow to dealership who after 30 days said it was the engine. Less than 50,000 miles
Engine failure at 145,000 miles. Has been having extreme oil consumption and taken to the dealership a dozen times. Repeatedly told there is not an issue. Car shut off at 70 miles per hour on the highway with myself and three passengers inside. The check engine light came on mere seconds before cutting off. Dealership now states there are two holes in cylinder 2.
Engine seized while driving
My vehicles 3.3l engine suddenly seized while pulling out from a stop sign in the intersection. Thankfully a group of guys saw this and were able to assist me in moving the vehicle out of traffic. Prior to this occurring I had noticed that it had begun to burn a bit of oil but I routinely checked it. Sounds similar to issues that Hyundai has had with some of their other engines that are now being covered under an extended warranty.
The engine oil drained out almost all at once. An independent mechanic found a hole in the valve cover. He said it would be expensive to take the entire engine apart but that something had clearly come apart and flown through the engine, causing a large crack. Oil had splashed all over the top of the engine. There was no fire, but there could have been. We stopped driving it right away. We have not yet brought it in to the manufacturer, but we have read that there are many failures of this engine (3.3 liter) around this mileage (124,000). The emission control warning light had come on a few days earlier, but not the engine oil warning light.
