WHEN INSERTING THE KEY INTO THE IGNITION THE KEY WILL ONLY ENTER HALF-WAY AND THE KEY CANNOT BE TURNED OR THE KEY CAN BE FULLY INSERTED, BUT CANNOT BE TURNED. *AK
AS I TRIED TO LEAVE MY HOUSE ON 6/18/04, I FOUND THAT MY KEY WOULD ONLY GO INTO MY IGNITION A QUARTER OF THE WAY. DESPITE TRYING SEVERAL IDEAS SUGGESTED, MY HUSBAND AND I ENDED UP CONTACTING A LOCKSMITH WHO FORTUNATELY WAS ABLE TO FIX THE PROBLEM IN OUR DRIVEWAY INSTEAD OF HAVING IT TOWED. HE HAD TO DRILL OUT THE IGNITION AND REPLACE IT WITH A NEW ONE. ALL TOGETHER, IT ENDED UP COSTING US $170. MY 2000 FORD FOCUS ONLY HAS 70,000 MILES ON IT, AND I DON'T FEEL THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM SHOULD BE OCCURRING. I UNDERSTAND IT IS A CONSISTENT PROBLEM BY READING ITEMS ON THE INTERNET AS WELL AS THE INFORMATION PRESENTED BY THE LOCKSMITH. HE SAID THAT HE HAS WORKED ON 6 FOCUSES IN THE PAST YEAR INCLUDING ONE JUST LAST WEEK. I AM TRULY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS POSSIBLY HAPPENING AGAIN. FORD SHOULD BE...
WE OWN A 2000 FORD FOCUS 4DR LX. ON 2/18/2004 AND AGAIN ON 6/20/2004, WE PUT A KEY IN THE IGNITION, AND IT WOULD NOT TURN AT ALL. WE TRIED EVERYTING, INCLUDING JIGGLING THE STEERING WHEEL. THE FIRST TIME, WE HAD THREE KEYS FOR THE CAR AND FOUND THAT ONE WORKED, BUT THE OTHERS DIDN'T. IT WAS UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY (NOT FORD'S), WHICH COVERED REPLACEMENT OF THE ENTIRE IGNITION ASSEMBLY. IT IS NOW IN THE SHOP AGAIN, 4 MONTHS LATER, UNDER A PARTS WARRANTY (LESS THAN 1 YEAR/ 12,000 MILES SINCE THE LAST TIME). THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING THAT THIS IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN. THIS TIME, WE WERE OUT OF TOWN ON A HOLIDAY SUNDAY (FATHERS' DAY), NO RENTAL CARS AVAILABLE ANYWHERE, NO PLACE TO STAY. NEITHER KEY WORKED (HAD TWO). WE HAD IT TOWED BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT WORKED ON IT THE LAST TIME. IT IS...
NO SIGN OF ANYTHING WRONG - THEN KEY WILL NOT TURN IN IGNITION AND THE STEERING WHEEL IS LOCKED UP. *AK
MY 2000 FORD FOCUS SE WAS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKING UP AND IGNITION KEY NOT TURNING, ON 06/08/04 CAR WAS TOWED TO PACIFIC FORD. FORD SAID THAT IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY, THAT THE PROBLEM IS WEAR AND TEAR. IGNITION CYLINDER WAS REPLACED, COST ME $380.25. NOW KEY DOES NOT OPEN DRIVER SIDE OF DOOR, WILL OPEN TRUNK AND PASSENGER SIDE OF DOOR . TOOK BACK THE CAR TO PACIFIC FORD, NOW THEY ARE SAYING THAT IS HAS TO DO WITH MY CYLINDER LOCK ON DOOR (WEAR AND TEAR)AND IF WOULD COST ME ABOUT $300.00 TO HAVE IT REPLACED. DID NOT HAVE PROBLEM WITH ANY OF THE DOORS OR TRUNK NOT OPENING UP BEFORE THEY SERVICED THE CAR. *JB
THE IGNITION CYNLINDER ON MY 2000 FOCUS HAS COLLAPSED FOR THE SECOND TIME, LEAVING ME STRANDED WITHOUT TRANSPORTATION. THE KEY WILL NOT TURN TO CRANK UP THE CAR. I HAD THIS PROBLEM FIXED BY THE DEALERSHIP IN 2002, BUT IT JUST BROKE AGAIN. I HAVE FOUND HUNDREDS OF OTHER COMPLAINTS FILED AND POSTED ONLINE ABOUT THIS SAME PROBLEM AND REPEATED OCCURANCES. NOW MY DEALERSHIP IS CHARGING ME $250 TO FIX IT AGAIN BECAUSE THE PART IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTEE. THIS IS DISGUSTING. I WOULD LIKE REIMBURSEMENT, AND FORD SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL, AS THIS IS OBVIOUSLY AN ONGOING PROBLEM. *AK

I HAD BEEN HAVING SOME SLIGHT PROBLEM GETTING MY KEY TO TURN THOUGHT NOTHING OF IT UNTIL TODAY (6/7/2004) WENT TO STORE AND GOT OUT WENT IN CAME BACK OUT AND LOW AND BEHOLD MY IGNITION WOULD NOT ACCEPT MY KEY. FINALLY GOT KEY IN THE IGNITION AND COULD NOT GET IT TO MOVE. IT IS FROZEN UP COMPLETELY. IT WAS HARD FOR THE CONSUMER TO START THE VEHICLE DUE TO IGNITION PROBLEM. IN SOME CASES THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START AT ALL. DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK
IGNITION KEY FAILED AND LOCKED THE STEERING WHEEL ON MY 2000 FORD FOCUS ZX3. *AK
OWNER SAYS THAT THE IGNITION LOCKS UP. IT ALSO LOCKS THE STEERING WHEEL. OWNER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHO REPAIRED THE PROBLEM EARLY ON. NOW THE VEHICLE IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY AND IT WILL COST ABOUT 600.00 FOR REPAIR. PROVIDE FURTHER DETAILS. *NM
I HAD PURCHASED A 2000 FORD FOCUS. I HAVE HAD THE CAR LESS THEN 5 YEARS AND THE IGNITION CYLINDER HAD FAIL TWICE. FORD MOTOR CO. HAS NOT ADMITTED AND FAULT IN EITHER OCCURRENCE. *AK
THE IGNITION CYLINDER OF MY 2000 FORD FOCUS WAS FAULTY. THIS RECENT REPAIR WAS THE SECOND TIME I HAD TO REPAIR THIS FAULTY COMPONENT. THE KEY WOULDN'T EVEN GO INTO THE IGNITION BEFORE THE REPAIR. 2000 FORD FOCUS IGNITION LOCKED UP. UNABLE TO TURN KEY IN THE IGNITION, MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO START THE VEHICLE. THIS WAS THE 4TH OCCURRENCE OF THE SAME PROBLEM. EACH TIME THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. EACH TIME THE CYLINDER HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE THIRD TIME IT WAS DONE THE SERVICE TECH NEGLECTED TO TIGHTEN THE MASTER NUT ON THE STEERING COLUMN (WHICH WAS REPLACED...TOO BADLY WORN FROM REMOVING THE CYLINDER THE PREVIOUS TIMES), AND THE STEERING WHEEL NEARLY CAME OFF IN MY HANDS WHILE DRIVING. THE DEALERSHIPS HAVE REPLACED THE CYLINDERS AT NO COST TO ME THUS FAR, BUT HAVING TO GO THRU THIS ABOUT EVERY NINE TO TWELVE MONTHS IS QUITE ANNOYING, NOT TO MENTION EXTREMELY INCONVENIENT. THIS TIME I WILL ASK THAT THEY SAVE THE OLD PART AND GIVE IT TO ME. *LA
WHEN PLACING VEHICLE KEY IN THE IGNITION SWITCH, CONSUMER NOTICED THAT THE KEY WOULD ONLY FIT HALF WAY RESULTING IN THE CONSUMER BEING UNABLE TO TURN SWITCH TO START VEHICLE ENGINE. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED. *MR THE DEALER REPLACED THE LOCK CYLINDER FREE OF CHARGE. *NM
IGNITION IS GETTING STUCK MORE AND MORE OFTEN. THE KEY WON'T TURN, STEERING WHEEL IS LOCKED.
IN MARCH 2002, MY 2000 FORD FOCUS LX HAD THE STEERING WHEEL LOCK UP AND THE IGNITION LOCK UP SO THAT I COULD NOT TURN THE KEY OR START MY CAR. IT HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY ENDED UP HAVING TO DRILL OUT THE IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER, REBUILD IT, AND REPLACE BROKEN STEERING COLUMN PARTS. NOW YESTERDAY, MAY 23, 2004, THE SAME THING OCCURRED - STEERING WHEEL LOCKED, KEY WOULD NOT TURN, CAR WOULD NOT START. I HAD TO TOW IT AGAIN TO THE SAME DEALERSHIP, AND GET THE PARTS REPLACED AGAIN.*AK

I HAD TO HAVE MY IGNITION SWITCH DRILLED OUT OF MY 2000 FORD FOCUS LAST YEAR SINCE THE KEY WOULD NOT EVEN ENTER. LESS THAN ONE YEAR LATER I HAD TO GET THE SWITCH REPLACED AGAIN SINCE I COULD NOT TURN IT.*AK
SECOND IGNITION KEY CYLINDER HAS GONE OUT ON AUTO W/LESS THAN 28,000 MILES. BOTH WERE EXPENSIVE OUT OF WARRANTY REPAIRS AND OCCURRED WITHIN ONE YEAR. APPEARS YOU HAVE ABOUT 150 COMPLAINTS RE: THE SAME PROBLEM. WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO GET A RECALL? *AK
MY KEY GOT STUCK IN MY IGNITION, BUT I FINALLY GOT IT OUT BUT THEN COULD NOT INSERT KEY. HAD TO GET IT TOWED AND WAS TOLD BY TOW DRIVER THAT WAS HIS 4TH PICKUP THAT WEEK OF THE SAME TYPE CAR AND SAME PROBLEM. I HAD TO GET IT FIXED MYSELF.*AK

VEHICLE FAILED AFTER BEING REPAIRED. PH THE VEHICLE WAS SIDE SWIPED IN CHICAGO WHERE THE SALES DEALER CLAIMED TO HAVE MADE REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE WAS TRANSPORTED TO FLORIDA WHERE IT FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS BARELY DRIVEN, AND HAD ONLY 10 MILES ON IT WHEN IT WAS PURCHASED. THE CONSUMER WAS UNABLE TO TURN THE IGNITION. THE CYLINDER WAS REPLACED. *SC THE LEFT FRONT STRUT AND SWAY BAR LINK WAS REPLACED. *JB
2000 FORD FOCUS. MY KEY HAS GOTTEN STUCK IN THE IGNITION AND HAS HAD TO BE REPARIED THREE TIMES IN THE PAST THREE YEARS. EACH TIME I AM STRANDED AND NEED TO BE TOWED. ONCE I PAID $700.00 AND THIS CURRENT FIXING WILL BE $450.00 AT THE DEALER. *AK
2000 FORD FOCUS: 1/04 AND 3/04 THE IGNITION LOCKED AND WOULD NOT TURN; IGNITION CYLINDER REPLACED IN 1/04 AND SECOND OCCURENCE BLAMED ON "WORN" KEY. HAD TO PAY FOR NEW KEY. I CALLED THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THE TUMBLERS ARE LOCKED ON AND IT WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED AT $89.00 AN HOUR FOR LABOR, $100+ FOR PARTS AT 2-3 HOURS OF LABOR, SO THAT IS A GRAND TOTAL OF $350 TO $420 FOR A PROBLEM THAT SEEMS TO BE A COMMON OCCURENCE. THIS NEEDS TO BE A RECALL ISSUE. MY FOCUS IS 4 YEARS OLD AND ONLY HAS 32000 MILES ON IT, I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF ANYTHING SO ABSURD AS THIS. INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, THE LOCKSMITH CAN...

STEERING WHEEL IS LOCKED AND KEY WILL NOT TURN SO CAR WILL NOT START. AFTER DOING RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND THAT THIS IS VERY COMMON AND MAY EVEN HAPPEN AGAIN AFTER BEING REPAIRED - TYPICAL COST IS $250 - 300. *AK.

I COULD NOT START THE CAR WHILE IN A PARKING DECK LATE AT NIGHT! THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE IGNITION CYLINDER REPLACED. THIS IS A PROBLEM FORD KNOWS ABOUT (THERE ARE 177 COMPLAINTS ON THIS WEB SITE) AND TSB REPORTS HAVE BEEN FILED FOR THIS PART FOR THE 2000 AND 2001 FOCI. *AK

JUNE 2003 & FEBRUARY 2004: IGNITION KEY WOULD NOT TURN IGNITION CYLINDER NOR WOULD THE STEERING WHEEL UNLOCK. FORD DEALER STATED THEY HAVE CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER NUMEROUS TIMES DUE TO THIS PROBLEM OCCURING ALOT AND THE DEALER STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONCERNED AND WOULD NOT BE DOING ANYTHING ABOUT THIS. DEALERSHIP IS STANDING BEHIND INITIAL REPAIR IN 2003 AS STARTING DATE OF 1 YEAR WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH THEY DO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN IN 2004. IF THIS PROBLEM OCCURS AGAIN OUTSIDE OF THE 1 YEAR WARRANTY WITH THE INITIAL FIX, WE WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR IT AGAIN. WE FEEL THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AND SOME ACTION TAKEN.
WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE STALLED. DRIVER WAS ABLE TO RESTART VEHICLE, AND DROVE IT TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. HOWEVER, MECHANIC WAS NOT ABLE TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK

ALMOST ONE MONTH TO THE DAY, THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER STOPPED WORKING. FORD WOULD REPLACE IT AT A COST OF AT LEAST $500, SO I REPLACED IT MYSELF BY ORDERING A PART ON LINE FOR A TOTAL OF $45. A COUPLE OF MONTHS LATER, THE IGNITION CYLINDER WOULD NOT ALLOW THE KEY TO FIT ALL THE WAY IN AND AS A RESULT THE CAR WAS NOT ABLE TO START, RESULTING IN A COST OF AROUND $300 TO REPLACE. I AM BEGINNING TO SEE THE STALLING PROBLEM FROM THE FAULTY FUEL PUMP. NOW MY AUTOMATIC DOOR LOCKS AND TRUNK RELEASE JUST STOPPED WORKING AND THE CAR IS MAKING A VERY ODD GRINDING NOISE WHEN YOU TURN. IT WOULD BE ONE THING IF I WAS THE ONLY ONE WITH...
I WAS UNABLE TO INSERT THE KEY INTO THE IGNITION AND THEREFORE UNABLE TO START THE VEHICLE. NEITHER OF THE TWO KEY I HAD WOULD WORK. ACCORDING TO MY LIMITED WEB RESEARCH, THIS IS NOT AN UNCOMMON OCCURRENCE FOR FORD FOCUS OWNERS. UNFORTUNATELY, NO RECALL CURRENTLY ADDRESSES THIS EXCEPTIONALLY INCONVENIENT $400-$500 REPAIR.
I TRIED TO START MY CAR AND THE KEY WOULD NOT TURN. THE IGNITION WAS LOCKED. I TRIED SEVERAL TIMES AND IT WOULD NOT TURN. I HAD TO RESULT TO DOING THE SAME AND IT WORKED. THE OTHER PROBLEM NOW IS THAT MY KEY IS NOW STUCK IN THE IGNITION AND WILL NOT COME OUT. THE DEALER WANTS TO CHARGE $380+ AND THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS! THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS IGNITION LOCK PROBLEM. MY CONCERN IS THAT THIS PROBLEM COULD HAVE HAPPENED ANYWHERE. THANK GOODNESS IT HAPPENED AT HOME CLOSE TO INTERNET RESOURCES. RESULTS IN STRANDED MOTORIST WITH NO WARNING SIGNS BEFOREHAND, HENCE SAFETY ISSUE. REQUIRES EITHER TOW TO REPAIR SHOP OR SITE VISIT FROM LOCKSMITH. UPON PLACING KEY IN IGNITION SWITCH CONSUMER WAS UNABLE TO TURN SWITCH ON. *AK
WENT TO START MY CAR BUT THE KEY WOULD NOT GO INTO IGNITION. I TRIED EVERY POSSIBLE WAY TO GET THE KEY IN. I ENDED UP CALLING TWO DEALERSHIPS WHO BOTH SAID IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 2000 FOCUS. WHEN I SPOKE WITH THE MECHANIC I ASKED IF THERE WAS A RECALL HE SAID HE WAS VERY SUPRISED THAT THERE HADN'T BEEN ONE. I ALSO ASKED IF THE NEW CYLINDER WOULD HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM HE REPLIED THAT IT WAS AN UPDATED MODEL BUT THAT DIDN'T MEAN ANYTHING- THEY STILL HAD THE SAME PROBLEM.*AK
WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH VEHICLE STALLED. DRIVER HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR ANALYSIS, AND MECHANIC COULD NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM.*AK
VEHICLE HAD A STARTING PROBLEM. WHILE DRIVING HIT A DEER, AND A FEW MINUTES LATER THE VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE. VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. *AK
RECENTLY HAD TO HAVE IGNITION REPLACED BY A LOCKSMITH. I COULD NOT PLACE THE KEY INTO THE IGNITION. SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH THE TUMBLER, I BELIEVE. THE LOCKSMITH SAID THIS HAPPENED ON SEVERAL FORD FOCUS VEHICLES.*AK
