2020 FORD EXPLORER Back Over Prevention Camera System Problems

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while reversing, the rearview camera inadvertently turned blue. There were no warnings lights were illuminated. The contact received a recall notification for NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V735000 (Back Over Prevention) and the vehicle was taken to the dealer who updated the Image Processing Module software; however, the failure reoccurred 1-2 weeks later. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who advised the contact that the rearview camera needed to be replaced and the repair would be completed at her own expense. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and followed up with the dealer. The manufacturer then called back but offered no further assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 39,000.

This vehicle has been “repaired” by Ford dealer per recall instructions but the backup camera is still intermittently blue. Recall “fix” offered by Ford does NOT fix this problem

I own a 2020 Ford Explorer (Platinum edition). A recall was issued for the back-up camera. My car had been having issues of intermittent camera problems prior to the recall. I took my car into Sam Pack's Five Star Ford of Lewisville (1144 N Stemmons Fwy, Lewisville, TX 75067) for the recall repair. . . I drove the vehicle for about thirty minutes after completion of the recall repair at which time I parked the car. Unfortunately, when I did so the "Blue Screen" returned. The was the reason for the recall. . . This is the same as prior to the recall "repair". Also, when this happens a warning pops up "Reverse Brake Assist Not Available" (this may be because the camera is malfunctioning). The camera does not do this all of the time. We have returned the vehicle to the dealer 4 times for back-up camera / rear sensor failure. Most recently they had the vehicle from 8/16/2021 to 8/20/2021. Allegedly they replaced the back-up camera. On 8/27/2021 upon returning home from an approximately 3 mile drive, the back-up camera again failed while backing into our driveway. The DIC displayed the message "Back up assistance unavailable." While on vacation in Colorado, the back-up camera failed every day for 2 weeks (8/01/2021 - 8/13/2021). The failure would occur after extended drives at highway speed. On one occasion, the back-up display flickered between the image, blackout, and blue screen. On one occasion both the backup display and the overhead 360 display, displayed only blue screens. Turning off the vehicle and leaving it sit for 30 minutes or more clears the problem. Vehicle would not start and every warning lamp and alert triggered on the dashboard. Tried remote start which was successful, but vehicle shut off 5 seconds later and the above alerts/warning lamps repeated. Vehicle would not start and just repeated all of the warning lamps/alerts. Waited 20 minutes, car started without issue; however, when put into reverse WITH FOOT ON THE BRAKE the vehicle started to drive backwards WHILE FOOT WAS STILL ON THE BRAKE! No amount of pressure on the brake pedal stopped the vehicle. Had to depress and repress the pedal to stop the vehicle. Rear cameras failed to activate as well. Luckily no one was injured. This is the third time this has happened, the third time I have reported to the NHTSA, and the third time I have reported it to my local dealership without resolve.

Rear camera will intermittently cause the screen to display distorted or total blue screen upon placing the vehicle in reverse

THE BACKUP CAMERA INTERMITTENTLY DOES NOT WORK WHEN WE PUT THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE. WE ESTIMATE THAT IT FAILS TO WORK 10-15% OF THE TIME. THE SCREEN TURNS BLUE AND WE CANNOT USE THE CAMERA TO SEE WHAT IS BEHIND US. WE RELY ON THE CAMERA BECAUSE THE OVERALL VISIBILITY TO SEE BEHIND THE VEHICLE IS POOR. WE BELIEVE THAT THIS ISSUE IS SIMILAR TO THE PROBLEM THAT LED FORD TO RECALL OTHER VEHICLES. OUR VEHICLE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THOSE RECALLS.

ALL CAMERAS INTERMITTENTLY NOT FUNCTIONING. DEALER REPLACED CAMERA MODULE. REAR CAMERA STILL NOT FUNCTIONING. SAID CURRENT RECALL FOR REAR CAMERA DOES NOT APPLY BECAUSE MY VEHICLE MANUFACTURER DATE IS OUT OF RANGE FOR RECALL. DEALER BLAMING REAR CAMERA NOT WORKING ON FORD ACCESSORY DASH CAMERA.
