Complete engine replacement recommended by Ford dealership. Vehicle had the Water Pump and Timing Chain replaced early 2022, has been running good since replacement but out of no where check engine light came on and started running sluggish. Had it towed to Ford and explained the engine is not building compression and recommended new engine. Since purchasing the vehicle brand new had several people we know also had to replace water pump but because of the design was $4000 to replace, find it strange with all the recalls on this vehicle that the water pump isn’t included in the recalls. After hearing from other mechanics the compression could’ve been caused by coolant leak (water pump) into the head gaskets. Basically one problem causing other problems but Ford not admitting any issues but redesigned the engine after 2016, sounds fishy to me.
Air bag dashboard light turned in January 2022 until now part is back order. Secondly over heating problems at 60 mph on July 16, 2022 I was told it was the cooling fans and was fixed and didn’t fixed the problem now I was told is the active grilled shutters malfunctioning
You can smell a sickly metal burning smell in the cabin when accelerating to get onto a freeway.
Water pumps failing with less than 50,000 miles causing coolant leakage and overheating
Check engine light came on low engine oil pressure light come on made loud knocking noise regular maintenance 147k miles vehicle is at mechanic shop estimate total $1500-$2500 to fix do not have money for repairs
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the NHTSA for assistance. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V692000 (Power Train). The failure mileage was approximately 180.000.
On 6/16/22 my vehicle was put in the shop for overheating. It was a water pump leak. It is a timing chain run water pump. The water pump is located in the engine. It was a very expensive repair. Due to the amount of labor this took to fix I was out of a vehicle for almost a month. I paid for the repair. Less that a week after I got it back my AC stopped working. Back to the shop it went. More money later... Mechanic explained to us that the water pump is located on top of the compressor. When it leaked it got all over everything destroying it. Now I must get a new compressor. No telling what else it ruined under there. This is a huge problem with this year model of Ford. Matter of fact in Canada it has already been recalled. Why is this...
Water pump broken. Causing engine to overheat. Please recall
2016 Ford Explorer water pump malfunction. Car runs hot and could cause engine failure.
A leak developed due to a faulty water pump. When I first noticed the leak in my garage I took the truck to a mechanic who told me there was evidence the leak had been going on for some time and that he could not do the repair due to the embedded location of the pump. After some research I see this is a big issue with explorers (especially 2016 models) and that the leak can mix with the engine oil causing permanent damage. I took this to Ford to be repaired at a cost of over $3K. Not sure how long I was driving with this leaking and what damage was done to the engine. This has been a known issue with many Ford vehicles and should be a recall
The Duratec V6 engine in many models of Ford including Explorer 2011-2019 has a major design flaw in that the water pump is INSIDE the engine and fails frequently and abruptly. When it fails, the coolant immediately floods the engine and mixes with motor oil and the engine seizes immediately it could be in traffic in an intersection or anywhere. This should have been recalled. There is a class action already for this issue in Canada, same engine and manufacturer, moving thru the courts and certified as a class action there. The US seems to be behind. The NTSB should pressure Ford to recall all of these and repair them with a water pump assembly which is stronger. In my case, on a routine service visit to the dealer I was told that I had the beginning of a coolant leak on my 2016 Ford Explorer Limited, with only 65K...
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH, the accelerator pedal was depressed and the vehicle started jerking and sputtering. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the transmission had failed. The vehicle was towed to the transmission specialist where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be rebuilt. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred a year later. The vehicle was taken back to the transmission specialist where the torque converter was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The contact stated the vehicle was shifting hard while driving and was jerking upon acceleration. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the engine mounts were replaced twice. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. The contact became aware of Ford Technical Service Bulletin Number: 20-2271, which he associated...
1) Engine consuming coolant - 102,000 miles 2) Gauge Temperature should be by default in the dashboard computer. This is not the case in the 2016 Ford Explorer. Complain: Consumers can not detect on time if the engine is overheating, because the gauge temperature is not visible on the dashboard. If you change setting to monitor any other component of the car - ex: tire pressure, others...the gauge temperature disappear from the screen.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 MPH, the vehicle was vibrating while the brake pedal was depressed. The contact stated that on several occasions while driving the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the water pump was leaking causing a mixture of the engine oil and coolant. The contact was also notified of a front axle failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 109,000.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the water pump was recently replaced. The contact stated that while driving approximately 60 MPH, the engine seized. The vehicle was coasted off the roadway. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was informed that the main bearing had caused damage to the engine. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 76,000.
While driving approximately 70mph on the highway, the vehicle check engine light came on and the engine began shutting down with the over temp light on. We had to coast over 2 lanes to safely get out of traffic. Upon pulling over I noticed there was no coolant in the reservoir so i pulled the engine oil dip stick and could see evidence of coolant in the oil. After having the vehicle towed back home, I pulled the valve cover and could see the water pump shaft seal had failed and leaked coolant into the oil and the sprocket on the water pump shaft has been ground down. The vehicle has not been inspected by anyone other than myself but I do have pictures of the damage. There were no warning lamps prior to the incident and the oil was just changed 4 weeks ago with no signs of coolant...
Failure of water pump which is known to cause failure of engine because of where the water pump is located (inside of engine). There have been many cases reported that there is none or limited warning when it fails and cases have resulted in engine failure. When engine failure occurs, the car shuts down and can leave individuals stranded and in harm's way. In my case, thank God, my husband noticed a couple of drops of fluid on the garage floor. As of yet, we have not been notified of engine failure as it is in the dealer getting fixed. I am not sure why no one has addressed this issue with Ford. There was a lawsuit pending and it was dismissed in the US based on the fact that the plantiffs could not prove Ford knew this when building the engine (Canada just approved a recall on this same...
Indicator light indicating power train issues came on after a few days of delayed shifting and slipping between gears. As well as thunking when putting the car in reverse. The car would not accelerate at all and was not safe to drive. I had it towed to the mechanic who consulted with a ford engine specialist. The specialist said the codes and symptoms lead to needing the torque converter fixed. That is when I consulted the recall for my exact vehicle. I had the vehicle towed to the Ford dealer. Ford is not agreeing to repair the recall. They have only agreed to fixing the valve body for $903.00. I would like my recall repair.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while his son was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle overheated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed that the water pump and power transfer unit (PTU) needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.
My car is a 2016 and I am having issues with my water pump. A 2000 dollar fix. This seems to be common with this year. I pay 500 a month and now this. It only has 85000 miles.
I have a 2016 Ford Explorer that the water pump keeps failing. In September 2020, I had to pay nearly $1500 to replace the water pump because it was leaking coolant which made the engine to overheat. Now, since October/November of 2021, the coolant begin to leak again which cause the engine to overheat. I took it to the mechanic who confirmed it appears to be the water pump. This is the second time filing a complaint with NHTSA. The first complaint was in January 2022, but I hace yet to receive any response. This appears to be a constant issue and I don't have the funds to continue paying for Ford's defect. How can I get ford to rectify this issue and how to get reimbursement for the repair already completed.
I was driving along in town and heard a real loud pop sound and the car jerked. The front started smoking heavily. I get off to the nearest parking lot and fluids had spewed underneath and there was a small fire from this that went out. I had two children both in child restraints that had to be removed from the vehicle, thankfully my husband was with me. It was towed to two repair shops whom both stated the PTU had exploded and broke the transmission as well. I tried to get assistance through Ford and have hit a dead end. It is at the local dealership where they claim the ptu exploded, broke transmission and cracked the engine block resulting in close to $14,000 dollars needed in repairs. This vehicle was running completely fine, no lights had been displaying on the dash. Consumer stated dealer is blaming the defects...
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle was shaking. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission and engine mounts were damaged and needed to be replaced. The dealer replaced the transmission and engine mounts; however, the failure recurred. The dealer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that a recall for the transmission had expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 77,235.
There is a VERY STRONG sulfur odor emiting into the cabin without an engine warning light. Tested for error codes and inspected by Ken Towery in Louisville and the seriviceperson couldn't detect the source of the odor. The defect appeared at 98458. The smell causes me to gag and feel light headed. Please advise.
When my Explorer was in for routine service on Friday, 3/11, it was explained to me by my authorized Ford dealership's service department that my water pump was leaking and that it was a risk to continue driving the vehicle, since engine failure was possible as fluid mixed into the oil. I agreed to allow them to do the work. I was quoted a price of $3300+ given 12 hours of labor for a water pump placed inside Ford's cyclone-style engine (Duratec). I was also assured that Ford had upgraded the pump and that the new one would likely not leak so prematurely. My vehicle has been dealer serviced since I purchased it in July of 2016 and only has 53k miles on it. I have been in touch with Ford directly, hoping to hold them responsible for the repairs. I initiated a case with Ford on Saturday, 3/12 and...
The 2016 Ford Explorer has a leaking water pump which Ford knows is an issue and has not issued a recall. The price of the pump is cheap but the labor is making this a $4000 maintenance cost.
My wife has been reporting experiencing nausea, dizziness, sleepiness and headaches during and after her drive home from work throughout October/November 2021and into December 2021. Our vehicle was involved in a high speed collision on December 24, 2021 while traveling EB on I-90 at approximately MP 101. I was driving at the time. It was at about 3:29pm. I couldn't quite recall what had happened and I was disoriented and confused for some time after the collision though I hadn't hit my head. Everyone else in the car had fallen asleep despite being well rested and it being the middle of the afternoon. My symptoms and condition were the same as oxygen deprivation. I believe exhaust has been getting into the cabin of our vehicle and causing my wife's symptoms and caused the accident. The vehicle is totalled.
My vehicle have been leaking coolant which causes the engine to overheat. I had the same issue in 2020 and had it repaired, which cost a lot of money to repair. I have not driven the vehicle as much since the last leak. Now 2 years later, it's the same issue. I don't have money like that to continuously repair a defect Ford has on it vehicles. Now I'm afraid to even drive my vehicle not knowing what might happen.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle began to emit white smoke from the tailpipe. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic where it was diagnosed with needing the head gasket replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and informed the contact that they were unable to assist. The failure mileage was approximately 54,000.
Using the FORD PASS ap, I have two recalls for my 2016 Ford Explorer Sport. Recall 21S22 for the roof rack trim detachment and 21N01 for high speed cooling fan motor relay. I use Miracle Ford in Gallatin, TN. They have made incident reports on two separate occasions for my car. First, they lost the report in July and then the manager, Robert, brought me back in for a second report. I keep getting text messages that my service is complete, but it hasn't been completed. They haven't called me to bring my car back in for repair and I get the run around every time I call. I've attempted to reach supervisor and Robert, the manager, with no success. I'm starting to get worried!
The vehicle surges when drive at low speeds, I have to keep my foot on the brake so it don't take off or hit something in front of me. About a month ago the surging almost made me hit a child in the roadway in front of my house. I am really uncomfortable driving the vehicle and don't feel its safe to drive due to this problem. Ford dealership is not giving any info on what tis problem could be. I found several problems on here related to this issue.
2016 Ford Explorer 3.5 Liter (non-turbo) front wheel drive, 52k miles. We noticed coolant puddling on the ground and took the car in to the dealer for an inspection. The dealer pressure tested the cooling system and confirmed the internal water pump is failing. This issue could lead to engine overheating and engine shutdown at any given time, causing unknown safety issues. Dealer quoted $3,400 to repair.
Observed white smoke from exhaust, Took vehicle to for dealership, dealership said coolant was leaking into cylinder head and cylinder head was cracked. Car is 6 months and 1000 miles out of Ford Powertrain warranty. Ford TSB advisors I need a new engine. Looked at vehicle history report and discovered numerous other mechanical issues with the engine including a transmission replacement and turbo replacement all under 50 k miles on vehicle.
Anytime I accelerate above 55-60mph my vehicle smells like it is burning. This smell consumes the cab area for a period of time. I have owned the vehicle for 1 year now and it has done this since the day I purchased it.
With less than 75k miles, the steering began to grind when turning. We had to get an entirely new rack and pinion unit replaced for over $2400. Thousands of 2016 Explorers have reported this problem but it is still not been deemed a recall. Recently, at 84K miles, the clutch on the AC compressor went out causing a $720 bill for a new compressor. We have also just found out the water pump is now bad and appears to be defective. In fact there was a class action lawsuit in 2020 regarding these defective pumps but this wonderful government we pay exorbitant taxes to, threw the case out on technicalities. Absolutely shameful.

VEHICLE STARTED TO MISFIRE AS I WAS DRIVING. IT WOULD GET WORSE EVERY TIME I WAS IDLE AT STOP LIGHTS. HAD TO PULL OVER TO ASSESS THE SITUATION AND I SHORTLY SCHEDULED A SERVICE APPOINTMENT WITH A FORD DEALERSHIP. FORD TECHS SAID IT WAS THE SPARK PLUGS AND COILS. HAD ALL 6 SPARK PLUGS & COILS REPLACED BUT THE ISSUE CONTINUED. STILL NO RESOLUTION AS OF TODAY. VEHICLE ONLY HAS 47K MILES.
I'M EXPERIENCING LIMP MODE. WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED THE TRUCK LOSES POWER AND CUTS BACK ALMOST LIKE I PUT IT IN PARK WHILE DRIVING. THE WRENCH AND ENGINE LIGHTS ARE ON.
I PURCHASED A 2016 EXPLORER LIMITED FROM A FORD DEALER AND NOTICED IT WAS LOW ON COOLANT, WAS TOLD IT WOULD BE FILLED AND OF COURSE IT WASN'T, I FILLED IT MYSELF. A WEEK LATER IT WAS LOW AGAIN, TOOK IT TO A CHEVY DEALER AND WAS TOLD THE WATER PUMP IS LEAKING. I CONTACTED THE SELLING DEALER AND LEFT A VOICEMAIL AND NO ONE RETURNED MY CALL. I CALLED BACK A COUPLE WEEKS LATER AND WAS TOLD IT ISN'T COVERED UNDER THEIR 30 DAY/1000 MILE WARRANTY. I CONTACTED FORD AND WAS TOLD NO ASSISTANCE BECAUSE I'M NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER, SHOULD THAT MATTER WITH 69500 MILES??? I WAS TOLD TO CALL A LOCAL DEALER MAYBE THEY CAN HELP ME. THE WATER PUMP ON THIS VEHICLE IS MOUNTED INTERNALLY AND DRIVEN BY THE TIMING CHAIN AND COST ABOUT 1500.00 TO REPLACE. SO FAR AFTER A USED PURCHASE I'LL HAVE $25,000...
THE VEHICLE WITHOUT WARNING , JUST SHUTS OFF. EVEN WHILE GOING 65 MPH ON A HIGHWAY. IF YOUR LUCKY, YOU CAN COAST OFF THE HIGHWAY BEFORE YOU ARE HIT . FORD REFUSED TO FIX EVEN THOUGH UNDER WARRANTY. SO I HAD TO SELL IT SO I WOULDN'T BE KILLED. HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE SAME THING.
WHEN ACCELERATING AN ODOR LIKE BURNT HAIR OR ELECTRICAL ENTERS THE CABIN. FORD DID PERFORM RECALL WORK BUT THE ODOR STILL ENTERS THE CABIN.
MY WATER PUMP HAS GONE OUT AND APPARENTLY THIS HAS NOT BEEN THE ONLY ONE.
WITHIN 10 DAYS OF BUYING IT BRAND NEW I'VE HAD ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. REPLACED BACK UP SCREEN WITHIN THOSE 10 DAYS EVEN THOUGH THEY DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. STILL CONTINUES. MULTIPLE ISSUES WITH THE POWER TRAIN. NOW I'VE BEEN OUT OF A CAR FOR 2 WEEKS BECAUSE I MIGHT NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION AT 65,000 NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. HOW CAN I PAY $38,000 AND IT GOES BAD INSTANTLY? NO HELP FROM FORD OR DEALER. MY GEARS ARE STALLING AND NOT SHIFTING CORRECTLY OR PICKING UP SPEED. I DRIVE LIKE AN OLD LADY AND TAKE CARE OF THIS CAR LIKE IT'S BRAND NEW. I WILL NEVER BUY A FORD AGAIN AND WILL TELL ANYONE WHO WILL LISTEN NOT TO DO THE SAME.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 FORD EXPLORER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED INSIDE HIS GARAGE WHEN HE STARTED TO SMELL A HEAVY EXHAUST ODOR INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED NO WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DORSCH FORD LINCOLN KIA (2641 EATON RD, GREEN BAY, WI 54311, (920) 469-3000) TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED COST ME $3,000 TO FIX BY CONSUMER'S MECHANIC. THE MANUFACTURER WAS INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 107,000.*DT*JB
I HAVE A 2016 FORD EXPLORER WITH 94,000 MILES. WE NOTICED THAT THE AC WAS BLOWING HOT AIR SO WE TOOK THE CAR IN FOR A REPAIR ON 9/8/2020. THE DEALERSHIP CALLED US BACK TO INFORM US THAT THE WATER PUMP HAD FAILED WHICH CAUSED ANTIFREEZE TO LEAK INTO AND ON THE AC COMPRESSOR CAUSING IT TO FAIL. WE WERE QUOTED A PRICE OF $2600.00 FOR THE REPAIR THE WATER PUMP. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT MANY POLICE CRUISERS WITH THE SAME MOTOR ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. FORD RECOMMENDS THAT THE WATER PUMP BE REPLACED AT 150000 MILES' THE MILES ON THE SUV ARE HIGHWAY MILES.
I OWN A 2016 FORD EXPLORER WHICH HAS 78,146 MILES AND WHILE DRIVING THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. I HAD TO PUT MY CAR IN NEUTRAL AND COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH MY CHILDREN IN THE CAR. I JUST PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE FROM EVERETT FORD IN BENTON, ARKANSAS LESS THAN A YEAR AGO AND HAVE HAD NORMAL ROUTINE MAINTENANCE COMPLETED ACCORDING THE THE OWNERS MANUAL. AFTER HAVING A MECHANIC TAKE A LOOK IT IS A RESULT OF A FAULTY WATER PUMP IN WHICH I WAS QUOTED $2500-$3500 FOR A REPLACEMENT IN ADDITION THE ENGINE WOULD BE SEVERAL THOUSAND. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE WATER PUMP IS INSIDE THE ENGINE AND SO WHEN THE WATER PUMP FAILS IT DESTROYS THE ENGINE WITHOUT WARNING BY MIXING THE COOLANT WITH THE ENGINE OIL. AFTER LOOKING INTO THIS FURTHER THE DEALERSHIP AND THE MANUFACTURER WERE...
THIS TRUCK HAS HAD ISSUES SINCE I BOUGHT IT LIKE 5 MONTHS AGO FROM CARMAX WITHIN THAT TIME I REALLY ONLY HAD IT A MONTH REST OF TIME IT HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP I BOUGHT WITH 26K MILES FROM CARMAX ALREADY HAD REBUILT ENGINE BREAKS ROADERS STILL HAVE ENGINE ISSUES NOW TODAY BELT BROKE AND NEEDS TO BE TOWED I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO HAVE DO MANY ISSUES WITH A NEW TRUCK NOT MENTION IF YOU DO NOT SHUT THE TRUNK HARD IT WILL DRAIN THE BATTERY SINCE IT KEEPS THE LIGHTS ON IN THE TRUCK ALREADY HAD TO REPLACE THE BATTERY.
