AN ERROR COMES ON THE DASH THAT SAYS STEERING FAILURE PULLOVER SAFELY. THE WHOLE POWER STEERING IS ELECTRIC AND FORD HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM BEFORE
DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, ALL MY TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS CAME ON AND MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP. LUCKILY I WAS AT LOW SPEED AND WAS ABLE TO STOP SAFELY. I CALLED LOCAL FORD DEALER THAT TOLD ME IT WAS NOT A RECALL.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 FORD EXPLORER. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO TURN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE STEERING ASSIST FAILURE AND SERVICE ADVANCE TRACK WARNING LIGHTS WERE ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO HER RESIDENCE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO LOCAL DEALER RANDY WISE FORD INC. LOCATED AT 968 S. ORTONVILLE RD, ORTONVILLE, MI 48462, (248) 627-3730, TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE STEERING GEAR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. UPON INVESTIGATION, THE CONTACT ASSOCIATED THE FAILURE WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V286000 (STEERING), HOWEVER THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN INFORMED OF FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 127,300.
ONE WEEK PRIOR TO INCIDENT, THE CAR STARTED MAKING A CLICKING SOUND WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE LEFT, BOTH WHILE DRIVING AND WHILE SITTING STILL, BUT WAS MOST NOTICEABLE AT LOW SPEEDS. WE MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH FORD TO HAVE IT INSPECTED, THE FIRST AVAILABLE WAS 10 DAYS AWAY. OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS THE CLICKING SOUND INCREASED AND WAS MORE NOTICEABLE. ON THE DAY OF THE INCIDENT THE CAR WAS DRIVEN A SHORT DISTANCE, THEN PARKED. WHEN WE RETURNED TO DRIVE THE CAR AGAIN AND STARTED THE CAR THE STEERING WHEEL WAS COMPLETELY STUCK, AND COULD NOT BE TURNED IN EITHER DIRECTION. IT MADE A TERRIBLE SCREECHING SOUND WHEN TRYING TO TURN THE WHEEL. THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO A FORD DEALERSHIP. THEY REPLACED THE POWER CONTROL STEERING MODULE AND STEERING ASSEMBLY (RACK AND PINION). THIS IS THE SAME PART THAT WAS RECALLED ON THE...
MY WIFE WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THE STEERING STARTED FEELING DIFFERENT. AS SHE EXCITED THE HIGHWAY ONTO CITY STREETS, THE STEERING BECAME INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL TO THE POINT THAT ANY REQUIRED SUDDEN MOVEMENTS WOULD HAVE CREATED AN ACCIDENT DUE TO DIFFICULTY TURNING THE WHEEL. THE FOLLOWING DAY, THE STEERING WAS COMPLETELY LOCKED UP AND COULD NOT TURN THE WHEEL AT ALL. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO FIRST FORD IN FALL RIVER, MA AND DETERMINED THE ENTIRE POWER STEERING PUMP, RACK AND PINION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED.

THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 77,000.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 113,000.
FORD EXPLORER 2014 82,000 MILES GREAT CONDITION. WAS DRIVING 65 ON THE EXPRESSWAY, AT THAT TIME THE STEERING WENT OUT AND PULLED TO THE CAR TO THE LEFT . THE WHEEL WAS STUCK.. I OR SOMEONE ELSE ON THE ROAD COULD HAVE BEEN INJURED. I CALLED FORD SPOKE TO ARAYBA, GOT CASE NUMBER. I CALLED BACK THE NEXT DAY, ARAYBA STATED THERE WAS NOTHING FORD COULD DO FOR ME. I ASKED FOR A SUPERVISOR. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. IT WAS A RECALL IN THE PAST. WHY NOT NOW? SUPERVISOR JENNIFER CALLED ME BACK A DAY LATER. SHE LAUGHED WHEN I TOLD HER I COULD'VE HAVE BEEN HURT BADLY. FORD WILL NOT DO ANYTHING TO HELP COVER CHARGES. THIS PART IS A 2500 FIX.
VEHICLE BECAME INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT TO STEER WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 60MPH. IT COULD HAVE EASILY RESULTED IN A VEHICLE COLLISION. INDICATOR MESSAGE ON THE DASH STATED A STEERING FAULT. I WAS ABLE TO GET HOME AND LATER THE STEERING STOPPED WORKING COMPLETELY AND NOW THE ERROR MESSAGE READS STEERING LOSS. I TOOK THE CAR TO A LOCAL DEALERSHIP WHO DIAGNOSED A STEERING GEAR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED FOR $3,000. THIS STEERING LOSS COULD HAVE RESULTED IN AN INJURY OR DEATH, NO QUESTION. VEHICLE IS ONLY 6 YEARS OLD AND 2011-2013 FORD EXPLORERS HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR THE SAME ISSUE (NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V286000) BUT THIS YEAR OF MANUFACTURE, 2014, IS NOT COVERED, ALTHOUGH IT IS THE EXACT SAME ISSUE.

ON 7-09-2020, WHILE MAKING A TURN ON A COUNTY ROAD DOING APPROXIMATELY 4 MPHS, MY STEERING LOCKED UP AND BUT BRAKES MALFUNCTIONING CAUSING MY VEHICLE TO GO OFF ROADWAYINTO INTO A FIELD. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME MY POWER STEERING HAS QUIT SUDDENLY! THE FIRST TIME I REPLACED THE RACK AND PINION MYSELF AND ALL IS FINE FOR BOUT A YEAR AND IT JUST DID IT AGAIN!! I PULLED UP TO GET GAS AND KILLED MY CAR AND WENT TO GET BACK IN AND LEAVE AND I DIDN'T HAVE STEERING ANYMORE! NO WARNINGS!

WHILE DRIVING AT 55 MILES AN HOUR ON THE GREAT RIVER RD WHICH IS WINDY AND NARROW. I WAS MAKING A SLIGHT CURVE WHEN I NOTICE THE STEERING WHEEL TIGHT AND NOT MOVING. I LOST THE STEERING AND HAD A HECK OF A TIME JUST TO GET OFF THE HIGHWAY. MY HUSBAND HAD TO COME AND TOW THE EXPLORER BACK TO THE HOUSE. WE TOOK IT TO THE THE KIELER GARAGE IN DICKEYVILLE WI. ROSS SAID IT IS THE COMPLETE ELECTRIC STEERING ASSEMBLY THAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. WE ONLY HAVE 79,848 MILES ON THIS VEHICLE. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A TERRIBLE SITUATION HAD IT BEEN ON A CURVE. I LOOKED DOWN ONLY BRIEFLY AND THERE WERE SEVERAL MESSAGES DISPLAYED OF WHICH I CAUGHT THE FIRST "POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT" IS THE ONLY ONE I RECOGNIZED. I WAS AGAIN ABLE TO PULL THE CAR OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, AND AFTER TURNING THE CAR OFF AND THEN BACK ON THE POWER STEERING WAS BACK ON. THIS EVENT...
I STARTED THE CAR STARTED TO BACK OUT OF DRIVEWAY IN THE PROCESS IT FELT LIKE I HAD NO POWER STEERING AS I PUT INTO DRIVE AS TO PULL OUT INTO THE ROAD THE STEERING FELT LIKE IT DIDN'T WANT TO RETURN AND KIND OF PULLED. AS I DROVE DOWN THE ROAD THE STEERING WAS VERY STIFF HANDLING DIDN'T RESPOND VERY WELL.THERE WAS A RECALL ON 2011-2013 MODELS MY CAR HAS A BUILD DATE OF 8/2013 KIND OF THINKING IT COULD FALL UNDER THAT RECALL. *TR
I OWN A 2014 FORD EXPLORER HAD A LOSS OF ELECTRIC POWER STEERING ASSIST RECENTLY. ALSO THE TRACTION CONTROL, TERRAIN MANAGEMENT WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE TURN SIGNALS WERE NOT FUNCTIONING. THIS SAME ISSUE HAS OCCURRED ON 2011-2013 AND 2015-2017 FORD EXPLORERS WHICH THERE WAS A RECALL BUT NO RECALL FOR 2014 MODEL. THIS SEEMS VERY ODD.THE COST OF REPAIR WAS $2,100. I FILED A COMPLAINT TO FORD FOR REIMBURSEMENT BUT THEY DENIED IT SINCE IT WASN'T PART OF A RECALL AND PROVIDED NO OTHER EXPLANATION. THE STEERING STARTED TO HAVE PROBLEMS WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AND THE TRACTION CONTROL AND TERRAIN MANAGEMENT LIGHTS CAME ON, AND TURN SIGNAL NOT WORKING. WHEN I FINALLY STOPPED THE STEERING LOSS WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND I COULDN'T TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE CAR HAS 102,000 MILES.
STEERING POWER ASSIST IS NOT CONSISTENT WAS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED. THIS TOOK PLACE WHEN TURNING AND CAUSED AN UNDERSTEER WHICH COULD HAVE RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT IF THERE WAS AN ONCOMING VEHICLE. VEHICLE WAS JUST IN THE DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE THAT DAY AND CHECKED OUT FINE. *TR

APRIL 3, 2020 DRIVING HOME COUNTY ROAD 45MPH STEERING ASSIST WARNING CAME ON WAS THAN MILE LATER COMPLETE LOSS OF STEERING OCCURRED. WITH GREAT DIFFICULTY MADE IT TO DRIVEWAY. ALSO TRACTION SELECT FEATURE DOESN'T WORK. VEHICLE MILEAGE 62725. NEEDS RECALL BEFORE DEATHS START BEING REPORTED.
WIFE WAS DRIVING AT 50MPH ON HIGHWAY AND STEERING SUDDENLY BECAME TO HARD FOR HER TO STEER. WARNING LIGHT CAME ON SAYING ANTI SKIDDING FAILURE. SHE MANAGED TO GET TO SIDE OF THE ROAD AND WARNING LIGHT LIGHT CAME ON SAYING FAILURE STOP SAFELY. SHE COULD HAVE WRECKED OR HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE. I ARRIVED AND MOVED THE CAR TO SAFELY. I AM A BIG MAN AND IT WAS ALL I COULD DO TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. FORD NEEDS TO RECALL THESE VEHICLES AND REPAIR THEM AS LOSS OF STEERING IS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD THAT COULD RESULT IN THE LOSS OF LIFE.
ON FEBRUARY 18, 2020, AS I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE, A WARNING APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD THAT READ 'STEERING FAULT SERVICE NOW'. WHEN I EXITED THE INTERSTATE AND FOUND A SAFE PLACE TO PARK TWO WARNINGS APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD THAT READ 'STEERING LOSS STOP SAFELY' AND 'SERVICE ADVANCE TRAC'. ONCE I WAS STOPPED THE STEERING COMPLETELY FAILED. SEEMS TO BE AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH THE EXPLORER EVEN AFTER THE 2011-13 RECALL.
LOSS STEERING WHEEL ASSIST WHEN DRIVING AT 60 MPH. CAR VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER THIS COULD CAUSE A FATAL ACCIDENT BECAUSE DRIVING IN 2 WAY ROAD.

THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE STEERING KNUCKLE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 87,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
VEHICLE IS EXHIBITING SAME EXACT PROBLEM AS 2013 MODELS UNDER RECALL, STEERING GEAR PROBLEM, WHICH WAS DIAGNOSED BY A FORD DEALER. CAR WAS BUILT JULY 2013. FORD REFUSES TO CONSIDER REPAIRING EVEN THOUGH PROBABILITY IS VERY HIGH THAT IT CONTAINS 2013 PARTS AS THERE WERE NO SIGNIFICANT ENGINEERING CHANGES FROM 2013 TO 2014 AND IS A VERY EARLY MODEL YEAR BUILD. CONTACTED FORD ON TWO OCCASIONS AND WAS TREATED BADLY BY CUSTOMER RELATIONS. REQUESTED ESCALATION OF COMPLAINT AND WAS NEVER CALLED BACK EVEN THOUGH THEY CLAIM THEY TRIED.
WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH AND NEGOTIATING A TURN THE POWER STEERING STOPPED WORK AND QUIT ASSISTING IN TURNING THE VEHICLE. THANKFULLY I WAS DRIVING AND WAS STRONG ENOUGH TO RIGHT THE VEHICLE AND AVOID LEAVING THE ROAD. MIGHT HAVE BEEN A DIFFERENT STORY FOR MY WIFE. TOOK IT TO LOCAL FORD DEALER AND THEY CLAIM THE POWER STEERING GEAR NEEDS REPLACED AND THAT THIS MODEL/YEAR DOESN'T QUALIFY FOR ANY STEERING RELATED RECALLS. AFTER SOME RESEARCH I FOUND THAT 2011-2013 EXPLIRERS HAVE A POWER STEERING ASSIST RECALL. MULTIPLE SHOPS CLAIM THAT THIS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE NEWER FORDS. AT THE TUNE OF 2700 BUCKS FOR PARTS AND LABOR I AM HOPING A RECALL CAN HAPPEN BECAUSE THIS IS CLEARLY A MANUFACTURER'S ISSUE WITH THESE GEARS.
I LOST ALL ABILITY TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE WITHOUT WARNING. POWER STEERING, TRACTION ASSIST, BLIND SPOT MONITORING, STABILITRAC, COLLISION AVOIDANCE, AND TURN SIGNALS. LIMPED THE VEHICLE HOME AND REACHED THE ISSUE... COMMON FAILURE KNOW BY FORD MOTOR COMPANY. THIS FAILURE COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A SERIOUS ROLL OVER OR FATALITY. WHILE STOPPED WITH ENGINE IDLING A WARNING CAME ON "STEERING LOSS STOP SAFELY". POWER STEERING GONE. TOW TRUCK WAS AFTER SOME TIME ABLE TO STEER IT ONTO THE FLAT BED. DEALER HAD TO REPLACE POWER STEERING RACK. THERE IS A SAFETY RECALL FOR THE 2011-2013 & 2015-2017 EXPLORER. BUT NOT THE 2014? HOW MANY BODIES DOES IT TAKE TO ISSUE A RECALL $$$
POWER STEERING RANDOMLY FAILED WHEN I TURNED THE CAR ON TO PULL IT OUT OF GARAGE, POWER STEERING ASSISTS FAULT OR SOMETHING, UNABLE TO STEER THE CAR EASILY. READ ONLINE THAT THIS IS A PRETTY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL YEAR, CAN HAPPEN WHILE DRIVING, ALL SURROUNDING YEARS HAVE BEEN RECALLED ALREADY. WAS LUCKY I WAS NOT ON A HIGH SPEED ROAD OR COULD HAVE HAD AN ACCIDENT AS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO STEER THE CAR.

KOONS FALLS CHURCH FORD (1051 E BROAD ST, FALLS CHURCH, VA 22044 (703) 241-7200) WAS CONTACTED AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE REPAIRS WOULD COST $3,000. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SUBJECTED TO A RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 117,000.
WHEN BACKING OUT OF GARAGE STEERING FREEZES AND CAN NOT TURN STEERING WHEEL. SHOWS "STEERING ASSIST MALFUNCTION SERVICE REQUIRED". TURN OF AND ON WILL COME BACK ON, (LAST 4 TIMES). THIS WAS A PROBLEM WITH 2011-2013 AND 2015-2017. FOR SOME REASON NO RECALL ON 2014. HEARD THE POWER STEERING HAS GONE OUT ON PEOPLE WHEN DRIVING ON HIGHWAY. THIS IS MY WIFES CAR. IF IT HAPPENS TO HER I AM SURE SHE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CONTROLL THE CAR. ANY ACCIDENTS OR DEATHS REPORTED BECAUSE OF THIS? TOOK TO DEALER BECAUSE I ALWAYS HAVE IT SERVICED AT DEALER. THEY SAID IT "NEEDS POWER STEERING RACK AND STAB LINKS". COST TO REPAIR $2,365.77!!!!!! WHY ARE 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 AND 2017 COVERED WITH RECALL BUT 2014 NOT COVERED??????????? HELP!!!!!
WHEN DRIVING THE 2014 EXPLORER, COKING OVER A HILL AND BEGAN BRAKING. CAR LOST BRAKING CAPABILITY AND BEGAN TO SPEED DOWN THE HILL, AND CRASHED INTO A TREE. ONE MIDDLE OCCUPANT ON 2ND ROW CAME UNBUCKLED AND DIDN'T SURVIVE. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING TRIAL FOR 3 YEARS AND RECENTLY INFORMED THAT NO INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE OTHER THAN THE EDR/CDR. NO POST VEHICLE INSPECTION HAS BEEN PERFORMED, NO MEDICAL REPORTS HAVE BEEN PULLED. I HAVE PREVIOUSLY FOR 3 YEARS INQUIRED FOR HELP ON THIS MATTER AND HAVE FORWARDED QUESTIONS REGARDING INFORMATION OBTAINED. I KNOW WITHOUT A SHADOW OF A DOUBT I AM NOT LIABLE FOR THIS ACCIDENT AND HAVE WORKED FOR 3 YEARS TRYING TO OBTAIN INFORMATION ON THIS VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED TO BRING THE VEHICLE IN FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V286000(STEERING). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 70,000.
LOSE OF POWER STEERING IN COLD WEATHER; NEEDS 50 DEGREES OR MORE FOR POWER STEERING TO WORK. NO WARNING LIGHTS WHEN POWER STEERING IS LOST.
STEERING WHEEL FAULT ASSIST
WHILE TRAVELING AT ABOUT 50 MPH ON A 4 LANE HIGHWAY, THE STEERING OF THE CAR BEGAN TO BE UNRESPONSIVE. IN SLIPPERY CONDITIONS I REDUCED THE SPEED AND WAS ABLE TO NEGOTIATE MY RETURN TO HOME. AFTER SHUTTING THE CAR OFF, I RESTARTED AND THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT MOVE AT ALL. WHEN THE CAR WAS BEING LOADED ON THE TOW TRUCK, THE FRONT WHEELS COULD NOT BE STEERED AT ALL. DEALER REPLACED THE STEERING COMPUTER BUT I WAS TOLD THE MECHANICAL STEERING MECHANISM HAD FAILED ALSO. NO ONE WAS HURT OR ACCIDENT OCCURRED, BUT THE CASCADING PROBLEM CREATED A DANGEROUS SITUATION.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE CONTACT WAS PROVIDED CASE NUMBER: CAS24964944 AND WAS REFERRED TO NHTSA. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 68,500.

THE POWER STEERING ON MY 2014 FORD EXPLORER STOPPED WORKING ALL TOGETHER WHILE PULLING INTO THE DRIVEWAY OF MY HOME OFF OF A CITY STREET. WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON STATING TRACTION ASSIST AND POWER STEERING FAULTS. THIS HAPPENED WITH OUT WARNING AND MADE THE VEHICLE VERY HARD TO STEER.
AFTER FUELING UP AT THE GAS STATION I STARTED DRIVING HOME WHEN THE STEERING GOT HARD AND COULDNT MAKE TURNS EASILY, ON THE DASH IT SAID 'STEERING ASSIST FAULT SERVICE REQUIRED', THANKFULLY I WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN AND THERE WASNT MUCH TRAFFIC BUT I WAS VERY SCARED FOR A FEW MOMENTS, I HAD A 1YR OLD AND A 6YR OLD WITH ME
STEERING ASSIST FAULT SERVICE REQUIRED MESSAGE POPPED UP WHEN I STARTED MY CAR. THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT TURN EITHER DIRECTION. LUCKILY I WAS IN OFFICE PARKING LOT AND IT DID NOT HAPPEN WHILE DRIVING OR I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO TURN TO AVOID OTHER CARS. I MADE ARRANGEMENTS TO HAVE CAR TOWED, BUT WHEN I STARTED IT UP AGAIN THE STEERING WORKED AS NORMAL. I DID NOT WANT TO CHANCE IT HAPPENING AGAIN SO I PUT IN THE SHOP. IT WAS AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE WITHIN THE STEERING SHAFT AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. I WAS LUCKY THAT IT DID NOT HAPPEN WHILE DRIVING, BUT WANTED TO REPORT IN CASE IT HELPS OTHERS.
WHILE DRIVING 2014 EXPLORER VERY NEAR HOME, THE POWER STEERING FAILED. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE BACK HOME BUT CALLED FOR A TOW TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR. THE 'CODE' SAID RESET COMPUTER. THIS WAS DONE BUT DURING TEST DRIVE FAILURE HAPPENED AGAIN. SINCE NO CODE IS PROVIDED, I AM TOLD THE ONLY THING THAT IS LEFT IS JUST TO DRIVE IT AND SEE IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN. THIS JUST SEEMS VERY UNSAFE ESPECIALLY IF MY WIFE IS DRIVING AND UNABLE TO HANDLE THE CAR TO A STOP OR WE ARE IN HEAVY TRAFFIC.

THE CONTACT DROVE TO PURCHASE FORD/LINCOLN (1352 US-45, MAYFIELD, KY 42066) ON SEPTEMBER 19, 2019 WHERE THEY REPLACED THE BATTERY; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.
WHILE DRIVING STRAIGHT ON THE HIGHWAY A WARNING LIGHT ALERT CAME ON SAYING STEERING ASSIST FAULT SERVICE REQUIRED. AT THE SAME TIME THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP AS I WAS TRAVELING 70 MPH. I COULD ONLY TURN THE STEERING WHEEL A 10TH OF A TURN IF THAT. I SLOWED DOWN AND PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I THEN TURNED OFF THE CAR AND ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE CAR HOPING IT WOULD RESET THE SYSTEM SO I COULD MAKE IT TO THE LOCAL CAR DEALERSHIP. UNFORTUNATELY IT WOULD NOT RESET SO I LIMPED THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AS SAFELY AS I COULD. HAD I BEEN TURNING WHEN THIS HAD HAPPENED I WOULDNT NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO MAKE A TURN AT THE SPEED I WAS GOING (70MPH).
APPROXIMATELY 68,000 MILES. GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM RACK WHEN TURNING WHEEL LEFT AND RIGHT AT LOWER SPEEDS AND ON SHARP TURNS. THE WHEELS DO NOT STRAIGHTEN OUT OR RETURN TO CENTER WHEN EXITING A TURN...DRIVER MUST MANUALLY RETURN THE WHEEL TO THE MIDDLE. I WAS ALREADY AWARE OF THE RECALLS FOR THE 2011-2013 FOR THE MALFUNCTIONING POWER STEERING GEARS (OR RACK AND PINION) WHEN I TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO ROYAL OAK FORD (ROYAL OAK, MI), THEY DETERRMINED THAT THE RACK NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND THAT FORD WILL NOT COVER THE COSTS FOR THIS SAFETY ISSUE. QUOTED $1650 FOR RACK AND $550 FOR LABOR FOR A TOTAL OF $2200. THEY WERE NOT ALSO ABLE TO DISCLOSE WHAT WAS THE ACTUALLY WRONG WITH THE RACK, ONLY STATED THAT IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE RACK, P/N: STE633RM, WAS USED IN THE 2011-2015 FORD EXPLORERS. THE SAFETY RECALL IS ONLY FOR 2011-2013....
