2018 JEEP COMPASS Engine Problems

Burning through oil! No light on for oil and not to mileage for oil change. Happened to check oil this morning and there was only a tiny bit on stick like hardly any. This is not the only issue with this vehicle.

My car has completely shut off at an intersection/stop light twice. Shuts off while in drive tells me I need to start again. Emergency brake engages. One of the times I had to be towed out of the intersection. I spent $500 replacing both batteries thinking it may be that. A month later (today) car strands me at a stoplight again. Same thing car cuts off and emergency brakes engages. This time after 4 attempts I was finally able to start it to get out of way of traffic’s.

DRIVING AT FREEWAY SPEED, THE ENGINE DIES. STEERING WHEEL LOCKS UP AND I COAST TO A STOP. VERY DANGEROUS. This motor has lots of recalls it has ran out of oil in under 2000 miles the car will stop in the middle of the road cut off and the emergency break will come on won't move until you put oil in to almost got killed 4 times dealership refused to fix it I have a extended warranty and they still refuse to replace the motor very dangerous car to be on the road

Stop Safely Will Shut Off Soon appears frequently. Car cuts off while driving. Will cut back on sometimes and sometimes not. Has been happening for at least 3 months now. It’s well documented online that dealerships and manufacturer are aware of this issue. There is no recall issued for this situation. I want the car replaced.

In middle of driving, the vehicle suddenly shifts out of gear and won’t accelerate, multiple warning lights appear in dash all at the same time and car at times the vehicle won’t even turn off

The contact drove the vehicle to the residence and used an ODB scanner but was unable to retrieve a fault code. The contact started the vehicle and the vehicle drove as intended. The contact stated that the failure had occurred on 3 separate occasions. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer and was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 32,500.

When the vehicle halts at a red light or stop sign, it activates the auto stop/start feature, causing the engine to shut off. However, when I release the brake to accelerate, the car might briefly restart and then stalls. This has happened several times.

While I’m at a stop sign or light, and I let my foot off the break, the high coolant temp light comes on and the car stalls. This has happened at least 30 times over the last 3 years. I was driving to work and my car stopped accelerating on its own. My speedometer read 0 and I rolled into a parking lot. I was not able to drive any longer. I turned the car off, then turned it back on. The car made a loud grinding noise, then turned on. I was able to leave the parking lot and started driving home, less than half a mile away. I have notice for some time now that I have been getting oil changes done before my scheduled time. For example, I got my oil changed August 25, 2023, at 66403 mileages. According to the return for service sticker next service date is February 25, 2024, at 71403 mileages. The current mileage on my Jeep is 68599. My concern is not only I require frequent oil changes, but my check engine light is on, and my vehicle stops on me in on-going traffic. I take my Jeep into Griffin's Hub Chrysler Jeep Dodge S 27th Street Milwaukee. On August 25th I informed the 1st technician that my check engine light came on along with low oil/change oil light. Car struggles to start, Dashboard shows coolant temperature high then does not start. Usually it will start again once battery is jumped. It has happened 3 times since August 2023. Unsafe because it happens unpredictability and has left me stranded with a child in the car. It cannot be reproduced because it cannot be predicted. It has happened in different weather each time and at different times of the day.

The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that after coming to a complete stop, the vehicle stalled while making a left turn while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights illuminated after the failure. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to the residence. The next day, the contact restarted the vehicle; however, the vehicle failed to restart while parked at a gas station. The dealer was not notified of the failure. An email was sent to the manufacturer about the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.

Engine suddenly overheated while driving. My safety, and the safety of my family, was put at risk as I barely had time to pull over off the interstate before the vehicle completely shut off. My vehicle shut off in the middle of the exit lane, putting us at an increased risk of an accident. The vehicle only had 55k miles and no previous issues with the engine, nor were there lights on until right at the incident. The entire engine needs to be replaced per dealership inspection. Upon doing further research over the months, I’ve discovered other recalls that could pertain to this issue my vehicle had. The vehicle has been unable to be repaired due to no warranty and overprices cost of the repair.

Car went in for recall on start/stop issue a few months ago. Recently wife parked the car and turned it off. Several minutes later went to turn it on again and it was dead. Engine would not start and electronics did not work. Could not even put car in neutral to have towed. Had to get new aux. battery and unhook neutral on main battery just to get into neutral to be able to tow. Dealership in Mt. Airy, NC is now trying to say we caused issues by hooking up battery incorrectly which is untrue since the issue happened before anyone messed with the battery.

Unknown , it has been taken in for diagnostic testing and each time they stated they weren’t able to find anything wrong with the automobile.

Hello- I was driving and I pulled up into a turn lane and when I went to take off after the light turned green my entire car just shut off, a bunch of code started flashing and then went away, I was stalled blocking traffic at a busy 4 way for over 30m while I waited for a tow truck, I tried to start my car just to see if there would be any luck and it started without any problem and I was able to move out of traffic but this was dangerous as there were no prior warning codes indicating something was wrong.

My jeep has died 3 different times in traffic. Once at full highway speeds, once in a intersections, etc. All with my minor child involved. They have "serviced" My vehicle 2 timed already and returned it with the same dangerous issue. They are saying they fulfilled the recall because they replaced a part, yet the issue persists. Last time I checked, fixed things work properly. Please force them to fix or replace my jeep before myself or my child dies.

Car is intermittently stalling, power steering intermittently failing and all service lights come on at one time, took to a non Jeep dealership they diagnosed as a TIPM failure and told me to take it to a Jeep dealership , took to two Jeep dealerships and they said since the issue wasn’t happening while the vehicle is in their care there’s nothing they can do about it.

Received notice for excessive oil consumption recall. Took to dealer to fix recalls. Realized nothing is noted of Jeep excessive oil consumption. Constant oil changes and adding oil. Just got another oil change, all filters changed, drove a couple hundred miles. Oil is low. Car has stalled on me in intersection with my baby in backseat. Had to get pushed to side of road. When stopping at a light or stop sign, the engine suddenly stop. I have to put on park and restart the car and everything is back to normal.

The start/stop function at times stalls car. Touch screen sometimes switches to other things. On/off and screen switch.

The car burns through oil and at often times is empty, which is not good.

My car keeps jerking. I’m not over the line. My car keeps sounding like engine is revving or down shifting while I’m driving and I’m doing the same speed limit. I’ve taken it in multiply times for this. I’m told it is normal. I don’t believe it is. My interment panel will not show me anything except safety & assistance or display. When I go to display. I can only go to nav. Repetition. If I click ok. It shows on off ok to select or arrow to left to exit. Those are the only options on that on setting. and the only other setting offered is safety and assistance. The options there are buzzer volume, speed warning, and Hill start assist. Ok to select or left arrow.

Stop/Start system We took the car to get it checked out within the first month due to hard shift and for warning light. We were told the warning light for stop/start was on because it needed an update. It came back on within a few months. Then our car battery had died, changed it out, and within maybe 6 months the new one died. We changed out both batteries this last time, and the within a week the stop/start warning came back on. Now it comes on and off sporadically for the last month. So we are clueless about this stop/start and what to do about it.

When stopping at a red light the start/stop system activated and the truck would not restart. There was an alert saying service ecs system and the parking brake activated on its own. It took about 10 minutes for us to be able to deactivate the parking brake and for it to start again. This has happened 2x and only when the start/stop happens. My check engine light has come on and now I'm getting a service engine notification.

As I was pulling my 2019 Jeep Compass Trailhawk to a light off the highway exit, the vehicle did its automatic stop the engine function. After about 4 seconds a "high coolant temp, shutdown vehicle" note appeared. The engine turned off and I lost complete control. The car would not move, e-brake engaged automatically, and the vehicle would not restart. 30 minutes later someone came by to jump start the battery and the car started. I was able to drive to a safe location but I am worried this problem will continue. There was no real explanation online and I have read countless accounts of the same problem happening to others, some while driving at high speeds.

Key fob not detected since I bought certified pre-used. There’s an oil consumption issue. There’s a stall issue that completely cut my Jeep off in the middle of rush hour traffic almost causing an accident. I’ve replaced batteries 2x and had to dealer 3x with them unable to reproduce symptoms. They didn’t do the oil consumption test. Just changed oil. This Jeep is a serious hazard!!

Same incident happened two days in a row, was only driving my car for a minute when the car just shut off while driving. Luckily I was still in my neighborhood and able to pull over, except today it happened as I entered the main road. Car just shut off while driving. Both days “low oil pressure” warning came on for a second and then went away. No prior oil or engine light or anything that would indicate an oil issue. Dealership found no leaks/cracks but said I have a serious oil consumption issue. Suggested I monitor and come back at 1000 miles. This is a huge safety concern and recall should be mandated for this known issue!! Car has only 53,000 miles and don’t even know if I can keep this car. My son was in the car both times, I’m incredibly concerned for our safety.

This 2018 Jeep Compass Latitude has gone through several repairs already; a lot of them concerning the start/stop system and the battery that powers this feature. In the past 4-5 years, it's been replaced three times. In addition, the engine had to be replaced due to high oil burn. As of recent, the vehicle has started displaying "Stop safely. Vehicle with Shut Off Soon" message; especially during highway cruising. This has posed a highly increased safety risk for my family and there seems to be no way for the dealer to address the problem because they cannot replicate it. When stopping at a red light, the car stalls and is unable to restart for 5-10 minutes. All of the lights and emergency notifications start popping up on the screen. Stating service start/stop. This has happened multiple times in the last month in the middle of intersections.

Driving to work and felt like engine locked up. Looked at dashboard and the coolant gauge on left side suddenly spiked and said "Coolant Temperature High." Then 2-3 seconds later the coolant temp gauge went straight back to normal and engine came back on.

Was driving home on the highway and the dash board lights all flashed red then the car would no longer accelerate and the check engine light stayed on. We had a baby in the car and had to pull over using the cars momentum to exit the highway as safely as we could in a dangerous situation. I have just had the entire long block engine replaced in January.

On April 9, 2023, May 19, 2023 June 4, 2023 and today June 7, 2023 as I was driving the car stopped without warning. In both insistence in June I was entering the highway and had to pull over. In the upper right of the dashboard where it states the operation (i.e R for for reserve, d for drive and etc) it changed from "RUN" to "On". I looked down and noticed the emergency parking brake was engaged. I looked at the dashboard and it gave instructions to push and deactivate the parking brakes. There seems to be an oil issue. I can’t find where it’s leaking but it is dropping off the bottom of the oil pump housing.

While driving the "coolant temperature high" warning message occasionally pops up and it shows that the temperature is as high as it can go on the temperature meter. It will then shut my engine down and not allow me to resume driving until I completely turn my car off and back on again. After turning it back on, my coolant temperature always reads completely normal between 190-200 degrees Fahrenheit. This problem has occurred multiple times including while I have been on the interstate, in the middle of an intersection, and in heavy traffic. My safety has been severely put at risk multiple times as my car has stopped moving while I was in the process of turning in an intersection and risked being hit from behind and from the side.
