We fixed recall W47 21-017-21 on July 2021, PTU is damaged and broke again, but I do not qualify for the Extended warranty because this issue was caught early on and did not present any error codes or affect any drive ability of the vehicle yet. I see there is a recall W48 for those that already had the PTU replaced but still have the issue. Chrysler and Dealership will not honor it since there are no error codes because the issue was found early during an annual state inspection before anything catastrophic could happen.

At random times, the vehicle will come up with "Service Shifter" on the dash, making it so that no other items can be viewed, including speed and such. Simultaneously, all lights on the shifter will come on, and no manual gear changes can be executed. The only way to get this cleared is to turn off the engine and restart. yhis can come up at the time of starting the engine and moving into reverse, or it can come up at random times whern driving at freeway speeds, so there is no reliable pattern on when this will occur. Shops have said that there is no remedy that they are aware of, but this appears to be a common issue amongst this vehicle with other owners. If this continues, I worry that this may cause a long-term incident for my family.

I have been hearing a grinding noise coming from my car for a few months. I was having another service on my car and tire replacement at an independent provider and asked them to diagnosing the noise. After completing their diagnosis they determined I need my PTU replaced. "Diagnoses grinding noise coming from PTU. Needs PTU replaced." There are current PTU recalls on other Jeep Cherokees years 2014-2017. My mechanic reviewed the recall with me and told me to contact Jeep . I went to Jeep dealership with supporting documentation from my mechanic. My 2017 Jeep Cherokee is having the same issue as recall notice for PTU. I am being told by Jeep that due to no open recall issues for my VIN Jeep wont make the necessary repairs under recall. My mechanic advised me to file a formal report as I meet all the criteria for the recall and...

The shifter turns all red lights and service shifter appears in the warnings. There was a recall for this on certain vin #s for the same make and model but Chrysler refuses to acknowledge the wider problem effecting others. They advise you to pay out of pocket and I can’t afford that. This is clearly an issue that is wide spread and the danger is unknown what can happen but I don’t feel safe driving my [XXX] in a vehicle with all these warning lights. The issue started apparently 2 years ago but hadn’t been addressed by my wife because she was out of work and not driving it much. We need both our vehicles safe and Chrysler needs to fix the issues that their manufacturers caused. There are so many articles and complaints about this same issue and Chrysler refusing to fix it. Please help us ensure the safety...

vehicle jolted while driving, then lost all power to wheels. grinding noise coming from front end. rolled backwards when placed in park.
#11598539 |
The vehicle jerks or jumps while driving on the highway. I took the dealership twice to get it fixed and paid out of my pocket but problem is not resolved. Now the issue leads to the power transfer case (PTU) failure. I went to the dealership for diagnosis and they told it will cost me $3900 out of pocket to fixed the vehicle.

Just bought a used 2017 jeep cherokee limited with 102,000 miles on it and within days started getting "service shifter" dash warnings. Looked up issues on jeep forms and similar jeep models between 2015-2018 experience this issue apparently.

This is a well known issue, and apparently the manufacturer is not doing anything bout it. You can read many many complaints here: [XXX] My problem began a few weeks ago. The "Service Shifter" message. Disappeared after I turned car off. Now it's back. Of course I'm sure the dealer will be happy to see me and apply a $500 bandaid that won't fix the problem. Obviously a manufacturing defect that will only get addressed when someone is killed. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Bolts fell out of ptu and broke housing. Vehicle right now is available for inspection. Problem confirmed by local Jeep dealer. No prior warning, just started making awful noise and vibration.
#11577752 |
Power Transfer Unit failure at 73531 miles. Repaired at the dealership for a cost of $3300. Manufacturer has offered an extended warranty to cover PTU failures on SOME vehicles in my year range for failure of this part, but mine was specifically EXCLUDED by the manufacturer. In spite of their denial that I received a defective PTU, nonetheless mine failed. Service 4WD warning message appeared, and I took it the dealer for repairs which they completed.

My 2017 Jeep Cherokee was manufactured in September of 2016. There’s no current recall on my VIN, however there is a recall regarding the PTU (power transfer unit) which ended September 23rd 2016, because cars after that date were manufactured with “stronger internal components”. My car only has 62,000 miles and I’m currently having the same issues as this recall describes. I’m getting a “service 4WD drive” alert, a “service shifter” alert, and “AWD unavailable” alert. I’ve taken it to multiple Jeep shops and the same code keeps popping up. C14A7-97. This code has a direct correlation with the power transfer unit causing the car to suddenly changed from 4WD to 2WD. I need to see if this can be replaced as a part of this recall. It’s available for inspection upon request.

The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 20-30 MPH, an alarm sounded, and the vehicle lost motive power. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle would fail to restart while turning the key in the ignition switch and would restart independently when taking her hand off the key. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where engine oil was added to the vehicle; however, the failure recurred. The dealer performed a software update under an unknown recall and added oil to the vehicle; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was...

Odometer keeps giving a “service shifter warning” turn vehicle off and back on and it goes away! Came back a few days later! All of the gears were lit up when warning came on dash board!
#11570593 |
I was driving and it started shuttering, then I lost forward mobility. Had to have it towed to the dealership. Dealership confirmed that it is the PTU. Now currently sitting at the dealership waiting to be fixed. The contact stated there was a warranty bulletin put out by Mopar regarding the 2016/2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk about the PTU needing to be replaced. The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk with the 9speed and feels it should be included in the bulletin. The dealership is charging $3690.00 out of pocket expense but the contact can not afford to fix the vehicle.

The service shifter notification goes off and on intermittently. It has recently come on steadily without shutting off. It has been occurring since 74,000 miles.
#11568922 |
The power transfer unit, and yes it is available for inspection. I had it inspected by two auto mechanics. The problem appeared back in 2023. The issue I have been having is when turning, backing up or accelerating the back wheels are kicking in, it does not have as much power during acceleration. There is already a recall for this issue but vehicle isn't on this recall list. There is always a margin of error in manufacturing dates due to multiple possible issues it is possible that any car manufactured out side of the recall date could have been missed.
#11568427 |
Today while driving, my vehicle’s power steering went out causing me to pull over to the side of the road. My car was running, but I was unable to move it. When I put it in drive, the lights on the shifter would flash, but the car would not change gears. The problem appears to be electrical as the battery is brand new, and the engine was running.

Service 4wd light turned on .. car stalled on road and almost could not pull out of the way of traffic . PTU unit ? Replacement… Jeep 2 weeks off of warranty extension… Jeep needs to recall ALL 2017 Cherokee models
#11560530 |
THIS VEHICLE HAS INTERMITTENT NO ACCELERATION FROM A STOP GOING INTO TRAFFIC AND WILL FINALLY RESPOND BREAKING THE TIRES LOOSE AND WILL ACCELERATE SO FAST THAT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF YOU IS IN DANGER. I am a retired shop owner and tech and this is a very dangerous situation not easily duplicated for diagnostic purposes but in following Jeep Forums hAS DEFINITELY been a problem for many and I am sure there are many of these issues and vehicles still on the road. There should definitely be a recall issued to correct this situation.
#11559592 |
The service light was coming on and off. It would reset on startup but would come on after driven for a few miles. I experienced the car kicking into gear when I went from park to drive. The first time I brought it in, they said that they didn't see anything and cleared the codes and I drove it off the lot not even 1/2 mile and the light came back on and as I was leaving the lot, I noted that the car abruptly took off when I put my foot lightly on the gas pedal. When I questioned that there was a recall a few years ago, the dealership said that this car had no recalls related to my problem. A few months after I got the car repaired, there was a recall for the 2017 Cherokee for the PTU but not for my VIN #. This car...

This vehicle has under 90k miles on it. This vehicle has also been maintained by dealerships or certified shops. We are the only owners of the vehicle. We had a “service 4wd” light come on. When we brought it to a dealership for diagnostics it was found that the PTU is failing. Cost for repair from the dealership is 3900. When googling this issue, I found that there were many keeps with the same make and model that were recalled for this exact thing. Please help.

Service shifter light is turning on the car at 20-60 mph and more. Car warning continues to appear over multiple periods of times and not able to see speed and determine if car is driving properly!
#11550924 |
While driving the service shifter warning has come on. The car will drive like it is not in the correct gear, and all the gear shift lights come on. It does not want to accelerate. If the warning comes on when starting up, the Jeep will not allow me to shift from park. It has to be shut off and restarted after waiting a few minutes. The auto stop-start no longer works. (It’s the feature that helps to cut emissions that usually engages when at a signal light.). While researching, I found out that Mopar has recalled some Cherokee models, but not mine.
#11550558 |
In the middle of turning into a busy intersection, service shifter light came on and car is shutting off without warning. Shifter lights flash and car dashboard states to put car into gear in order to drive. Took several minutes for car to restart in order to get out of the busy intersection. Huge safety issue could cause a collision while driving for car to shut off without warning. Numerous reports of this on the NHTSA, forums and discussions with no resolution from the manufacturer.
#11549548 |
UNKNOWN Vehicle does not shift into gears correctly and can sometimes have unwanted acceleration or has loss of power at inopportune times.
#11549550 |
Transmission shifting erratically/service shifter warning displays. Vehicle will lose power at inopportune times due to failure to shift, which could cause a collision, or an accident if on a busy road. Also vehicle will have unwanted acceleration when attempting to come to a stop. This can be dangerous as it may push the vehicle into an intersection after you have attempted to stop. There are various complaints of this issue on various websites and media forums yet no mention of the manufacturer making any attempts to resolve. I have also found the service shifter issue to disable the engine and not allow the vehicle to start which can leave someone stranded.
#11548184 |
In the first incident, the engine stalled. Next incident, warning lights on the dash appeared (engine light, traction light, and throttle control) and when pressing on the gas peddle, the car would not respond (would not increase speed). I had to put on flashers to a warn car behind me. Very scary. Bringing in for service ASAP.
#11547801 |
Driving in normal conditions, had the vehicle loose power to all 4 wheels when on the road. After taking it into a shop mechanic stated that the power transfer unit was the cause of the problem. This created an extremely unsafe situation leaving me unable to move the vehicle and not being able to control it in either direction
#11547450 |
Service shifter light comes on and off randomly while driving. Won't allow my vehicle to restart after shutting off without getting a jump to start it. Had the shifter replaced on 3/31/22 at 64,000 miles and now again it's happening at 89,000 miles on 9/29/2023.
