Several months ago, my dashboard displayed a service four-wheel-drive message. I took it to a mechanic. They diagnosed to have the code C14A7-97 CPU motor component system operation obscured or blocked. Further research was conducted and there are several bulletins out for this year and model regarding differential input splines wearing out due to a manufacturer issue creating a major safe issues. In addition on several occasions the warning light for my parking brake has come on, according to an article I read this is a symptom and safety issue related to the transfer case flaw. I speculate a parking brake failure could potentially cause a roll away. There is no recall for my specific VIN for this issue although it’s evident that this is one of the Jeep Cherokee’s that was effected. I fear that if this causes my vehicle to lose power while driving could lead to a...

September 6, 2023 my 2017 Jeep cherokee started making noises while driving and the service 4wd light came on. I called Quirk Jeep service and I was told to not drive it and have it towed to the shop. The problem was diagnosed as a PTU failure. I was not off road but on a local paved road when it failed. As of today 9/13/23 I was told there were no PTUs available anywhere and my car was not covered by recall W47 (20V343 NHTSA).

Shifter Service message appears on dash while operating vehichle. All lights for transmission position are lit up at the same time. This occurred during "normal" operation of vehicle.

I did have an incident in July of 2022, my car would not get out of park. I was in a drive through and put my car in park. When I went to put my car in drive. The vehicle completely shut off and began to roll backwards. The next set of issues, I first noticed the issues in the beginning of 2023. The service 4wd light is on and the parking brake will not engage. The 4wd itself works just fine, each terrain mode will engage. So Ilderton Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram (High Point, NC), looked at my vehicle and said the PTU was bad and needs to be replaced. This passed weekend, I was driving entering a highway via acceleration lane and my car had trouble switching speed limits. Which leads me to believe the necessary power was not able to perform. This is detrimental to the safety...

transmission slips to the point it jerks my car when it down shifts and going down a hill it will rev up over 3 rpm

I brought car in for oil change and was told the R front axle was leaking. Brought it to dealer for repair and told Both that both front and rear axles needed to be replaced along with PTU. Was informed that the that was ordered was cancelled b/c 800 people across the country were looking for the same part. There were no safety warnings. I was told very unsafe to drive b/c front axle came out of PTU.

Service shifter message has been appearing and at times, all lights on PRND lighting up. The vehicle transmission may still engage or may not. Recent occurrence on 07/13/2013, vehicle took 20 minutes before transmission engaged. Fortunately, I was parked at work, going home. If this occurred on the road, has potential of wreck happening. Jeep dealership leaning towards voltage error, cleaned battery terminals, test drove, could not replicate error. Did not drive until 07/17/2023, service shifter message came back without all PRND lights coming on.

SHIFTER SERVICE light appears chronically while driving and locks the digital speedometer, all lights on console go red until car is parked and restarted. No one can tell me what this means, or how to fix it ... not even the dealer. Totally scary as I travel alone a great deal of the time, and today is just the latest occurrence of this over the last 18 months.

"Service Shifter" light came on, and all my shifter's lights are red. Looking across the internet, this is a widespread issue. Thankfully this didn't cause an accident, but it sounds like some users report not being able to shift into park. Will be taking to the dealership soon (its too late in the day to drop it off now).

The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH and releasing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle made abnormal banging sounds and lunged forward. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was able to continue driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the TCM software update was completed under a recall; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to a second dealer, Huntington - RAM (5080 E Jericho Turnpike, Commack, NY 11725), where the TCM software update was completed; however, the failure persisted. Additionally, the contact stated that the RPMs revved up to 5,000 while in Adaptive Cruise Control mode. The contact shifted into gear, and the vehicle responded as needed. The dealer was contacted and informed the contact that he would need to leave the vehicle for additional diagnostic tests. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the...

The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that when he stopped the vehicle and shifted into park(P), the gear was not recognized. Additionally, the “Service 4WD” warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) needed to be replaced. The VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V343000 (Power Train). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 68,000.

Upon starting the vehicle, the service shifter message came on the dashboard screen and all the lights on the shifter illuminated red. If I drive with it on, it stays on. When I turn off the Jeep and turn it back on, the message and lights go off. However, this message has appeared about once a month for the last few months. It is unknown if my safety has been at risk. I've called two different dealers and got widely different answers about what the problem could be, as well as very different cost estimates to fix it. But, no one really knows what the fix is. I've investigated this problem online and have found 100s if not 1000s of complaints about the same problem with no clear solution. Why is there no recall for this yet. It's been going on for years.

The contact's daughter owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that on various occasions while his daughter was driving at various speeds, the "shift to park(P) or neutral(N), Press Brake" message was displayed, and the battery warning light was illuminated. Additionally, the vehicle started losing motive power shortly afterwards. The vehicle was able to restart, but the failure persisted. The vehicle was then towed to an independent mechanic however, the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 86,000.

The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed and making a left turn, there was an abnormal grinding sound coming from the front of the vehicle. The vehicle lost motive power and stalled. The contact stated that the gear shifter failed to move as needed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the contact was informed about NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V343000 (Power Train) however, the VIN was not included. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact mentioned that the rear differential was previously repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 61,000.

The vehicle at close to the end of the powertrain warranty of 5 year 60,000 miles had the transmission go out. The actual mileage was 55,733. There were no actual dashlights lights prior to the incident. Basically the vehicle would actually go into reverse. The vehicle was then taken to a repair shop for an expensive replacement. The transmission shifter was also needing replacement. Two wheel sensors also were a problem and were in need of repair.
#11509813 |
Ever since my transmission repair in October 6, 2022 I have had many lights on my dash and I continued to take it back to the dealer and they couldn't explain why they continued to be on. They were totally confused. The service 4wd light remained on and It was taken into another Jeep Dealer for review and it turns out the PTU assembly and actuator are in need of replacement and it is at a cost of $3500. The transmission and gear shift assembly were just replaced at a cost of $9,000 in October of 2022. Jeep has had many issues with the transmission and PTU assembly. Jeep stated they only have six dealers across the US with these and they can't get them as they are behind on the manufacturing because of all the problems. This should either be covered under the powertrain warranty or a recall process....

The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving, the vehicle was drifting. While driving approximately 20 MPH, the vehicle jumped. The service shifter warning light was illuminated and was flashing on and off. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that the thermostat, service shifter and assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 76,000.

The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while approaching a stop sign, the contact heard an abnormally loud sound coming from the front of the vehicle. The contact noticed that the vehicle was rolling backwards even while in park and turned off. The contact stated that an unknown software update was performed; however, the failure recurred. There was no warning light prior to the failure. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed of failure with the differential and spline. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V343000 (Power Train) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,200.

The service shifter light keeps coming on. It will also misfire when the start-stop system is used. Sometimes when it misfires it will cause the valves to be out of sink and then the engine runs very rough until it is fixed.

The automatic transmission shifter transmits a warning to the instrument panel display with the words SERVICE SHIFTER. All of the red shifter console lights light up at once. The vehicle will not engage the PARK safety brake at times after parking the vehicle when the warning is illuminated. While operating the vehicle no other instrument readings are available (speed, mileage, etc). The vehicle has not yet been inspected by a dealer or mechanic and is a continuing problem. This issue first appeared one month ago and there was no other indication of a problem prior to the first occurrence.

W84 Powertrain Software- July 30 2022 Jerry Seiner Casa Grande Dealership technicians inspected and reprogram the PCM and TCM software and closed the recall but 2 months later all the lights on my dashboard came on check engine light service shifter park brake etc. I went back to the dealership and the advisor told me to go to the dealership where I bought it from. I ended up going to Larry Miller Chrysler Jeep Avondale in Arizona. The vehicle was braking on its own while driving high speeds on the highway and while driving I almost crashed. My vehicle was in and out of the dealership many times and the technicians didnt seem to know what was wrong with the vehicle. Almost 6 months after the initial problem it seems its fixed. 01/13/2023 was the last time I had to return because the dashboard lights were turning on after driving...

Service shifter light comes on and all lights light up on shifter. This is a issue that I brought up about 2-3 years ago when I purchased the vehicle. Took it to dealership they replaced a cable and another part I believe. The issue is now happening again. My cruise control on the vehicle also does not always decelerate when it should and will speed up over the amount its set for.

When driving my jeep the dashboard will randomly give me a warning to service my shifter and all of the lights on shifter will go red. I have to turn my jeep off and back on for the lights to go back to normal. I have had to replace the power transfer unit due to the 4 wheel drive not working anymore. I took my car into the dealership to the PCM W84 Recall and two weeks later my transmission fluid exploded and the engine was smoking. Had to replace the heat ignition coil and the inlet hose. Paid $2,000 to repair and a week later my check engine light came on and now my car is overheating. Took it to the dealer and they added coolant and said it was an air bubble in the coolant. A couple of days later the issue happened again, took it in two...

The vehicle began making a crunching/grinding sound, and lost some traction/control. It then only would go very slowly even though I was pressing the accelerator, and then the RPM meter was revving up and down even after I took my foot completely off the pedal. After turning it off on the side of the road for about 15 minutes, we were able to drive it home with no further issues. The following week when I went to have it inspected (the first time I drove it since), it made it less than 10 miles before it did the same thing and was unable to be moved this time. We towed it in to have it inspected at a jeep dealership and they confirmed it is a PTU/Transmission issue. I have a video of the second incident if needed.

Power transfer unit went out on it's own while driving car normally. Car was kept in excellent condition with no prior issues. Dealership would not help cover and quoted at $4500 for repair. Extended warranty (https://prestige-warranty.com/) will not cover the cost as they label the PTU as "different" than a normal transfer case that they would cover. So I purchased a Trailhawk rated Jeep Cherokee that has a specially designed PTU to go off-roading that very commonly breaks and goes out, rendering the Trailhawk as a broken RWD SUV. A recall campaign (W48) was issued, but only updated software in 2014-2017 Jeep vehicles to prevent the vehicle from rolling in park AFTER the PTU part is broken. There were NO efforts made to recall and replace the PTU part itself which inevitably breaks in every 2014-2017 Trailhawk vehicle. This is not acceptable.

This past Sunday night, 11/13/22, I experienced a 9-speed transmission failure in my vehicle. The car immediately lost the ability to propel itself, and I was forced to veer onto the shoulder, to narrowly avoid being rear-ended. My car only has 89,440 miles on it. It is currently at a reputable transmission shop, where a diagnosis determined that the transmission experienced a mechanical failure, and would need to be replaced. I was also informed that parts to complete a replacement, are "on national backorder, with no ETA". This leads me to believe that there are a large number of failures, or Chrysler doesn't want to produce new faulty parts, to replace original faulty parts. Additional research unearthed overwhelming evidence of this being an ongoing issue with Chrysler’s 9-speed transmissions, throughout their product line. The car has not been taken to a Chrysler dealership as of yet, as additional towing charges...

While driving the vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly stops running without any warning. Engine stops. Car just coasts. PRNDL indicator (D for drive) on instrument cluster flashes instead of a constant D. Then some sort of messages comes up similar to "shift to neutral to start engine". Car will not restart. Car coasts to stop without power and no power steering. Then I need to turn ignition off. I will then cycle locks (locked then unlocked). Then turn on ignition. From here the car attempts to start but it is not an immediate start up like normal. The gauge needles (speedometer and tachometer) both go all the way to the right while the car attempts to restart but this startup takes about 10+ seconds of attempted cranking to finally restart. This is a long clicking sound before restart. This has happened 3-4 times now in the 30 days. Most recently on...

Getting "Service Shifter" warning light and Jeep doesn't have a resolution for this. I have not been stranded yet or paid for service, but based on what I'm finding, sounds like both are a strong possibility and resolution appears to extremely unlikely!

I see that the 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokees, were recalled for a SERVICE SHIFTER, my 2017 is now showing the same warning. I seems to me that JEEP has never fixed the problem, and the 2017 should also have the same recall. I have to pay $167.00 for a diagnostic and then what ever the cost of the repair - I am very confused why my jeep does not fall under the recall as it is obvious to me that the issue with the electronic shifter was never fixed!
#11483891 |
The PTU failed on my 2017 Jeep Cherokee Limited. The SVC 4WD warning light came on my vehicle and the 4x4 system is not working. I took the vehicle to my local Jeep dealership. The Jeep dealership performed a diagnostic and inspection of the vehicle and determined that the vehicle has a bad PTU and needs to be replaced. The dealership gave me a quote of $2,800 to replace the bad PTU. The dealership informed me that it wasn’t covered under warranty and there is no recall on my vehicle. I did not get the PTU replaced. When I did a Google search I found there is an extremely large number of Jeep Cherokee owners with bad PTUs without a recall. Apparently Jeep did recall some 2014 - 2017 Cherokees, but the recall is VIN specific. There is clearly an issue with the Jeep Cherokee PTUs. This is unacceptable!

Gear shifter errors and brings up "Service Shifter." Vehicle has to be completely shut off to clear error. Whewn the notificaion appears vehicle chages gears roughly and doesnt initiate park. Error has happend on highways, city street, or whenever the vehicle is placed into drive. It had only happend a couple times until receintly where its becomming more frequent, every other day as of now.. Dealer was unable to replicate the error, its to sporadic, and a OBDII reader shows nothing. I have pictures from a couple of the most recent times

Service shifter warning continuous for 12 months. Recalled on the 2017 Grand Cherokee but this is am issue with the Cherokee latitude. This is a very serious safety issue & needs recalled for more vehicles!

We first noticed the "svc fwd'' warning light. Intermittently at first and going off after driving a mile or so. We were first told it was probably a wiring problem, possibly a worn and exposed connector or a bad fuse but neither was found. Only after the ''svc fwd'' light started to remain on, did we have a diagnostic run and then were told the PTU had gone out and that this is a known common problem with Jeep Cherokee's 2014 - 2017.In fact, so bad a problem, it warranted a recall. Thousands of jeeps are having this problem but the recall is VIN specific. Ours is a 2017 and is NOT on the recall although it is now dangerous to drive. We are essentially paying for a vehicle we cannot drive and have been waiting over 5 weeks now for a replacement PTU. Even so, some of the replacement...

Power Transfer Unit falls off because of acknowledged manufactured defect: 1.While it seems extremely unlikely for all bolts of the power transfer unit to eject and/or shear, it is worth noting that increased stress & strain upon an un-torqued bolt could lead to such a condition. Review of the Jeep Cherokee Forum resulted in discovery of identical incidents associated with the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, specifically in the affected model range of Safety Recall W47. 3.Safety Recall W47 States: “The PTU on about 67,240 of the above vehicles may have been built to allow relative movement between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft. This condition may result in the teeth of the input splines wearing off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, torque cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission, which...

The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 55 MPH, the vehicle started jerking with the service shifter message displayed. The contact stated that the gear shifter indicator lights were flashing. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer who repaired the bezel kit shifter and the jumper wiring harness. The failure reoccurred. The contact stated the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V343000 (Power Train) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 40,685.

UNKNOWN. When driving my Jeep there will be times where I go to accelerate and my transmission will jump. Also while I’m driving all of my gears on my shifter will turn red and a message will pop up saying service shifter. It’s been happening for a few years but the last time it happened was today 7/22/2022.

On our 2017 Jeep Cherokee all the red lights illuminate on the shifter console making it impossibe to know what gear you are in. The warning 'Service Shifter' appears on the dash/instrument panel. Mechanics have told us that this has become a common issue with this model and other Jeeps and can lead to a shut down of the vehicle and/or further issues with the drivetrain or electronics. It would appear from all the related issues being voiced on the internet and in Jeep forums that it involves defective parts installed at the time of manufacture. We were required to pay $500.00 to replace associated parts by the dealership as our warrranty had just expired. Given the extent of this issue, a recall should be demanded of the company and reimbursment for the cost of repairs.

Vehicle keeps having warning light for service shifter violently shift at time and anyone with this model is having the exact same problem
#11463887 |
My issue is with the PTU on my 2017 Jeep Cherokee. I had barely over 60,000 miles (around 62,000 when this issue happened) and the "SVC 4WD" light was illuminated on my dash board. After doing some research, I saw that many Cherokees, within my same year era, were recalled for this same issue. The issue being that the vehicle could lose all power while being driven and also a failure to engage while the vehicle is placed into park, could mean my vehicle rolling out of park and hitting someone or crashing. This issue is a very known issue with the years 14-17, yet my 2017 doesn't fall under the recall. This is a huge liability and the dealership I went to, did not offer any type of "good will" repair on a situation that I feel really calls for it, especially being only 2,000 over my powertrain warranty....
