Engine light came on while driving on the highway with no other warnings or symptoms that could be noticed during standard operation. Vehicle was taken in to Ford for service the next day and it was discovered that coolant was leaking into cylinder #1 due to the design of the engine long block. Coolant intrusion into the cylinder was causing the cylinder to misfire, as well as engine overheating. If I had not taken the vehicle in for service immediately, overheating would have continued, leading to engine failure while actively driving. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE BY FORD AFFECTING SOME OF THEIR 2.0L ECO BOOST ENGINES. Ford issued a technical service bulletin (TSB 19-2346) for its technicians on how to diagnose and fix this defect in December 19th of 2019. Ford service told me the repair would not be covered in any extended coverage or powertrain coverage from the factory.

The antifreeze leaks into the engine due to a KNOWN manufacturer design flaw, is available to inspection upon request and appointment made. Mine and others safety are at risk due to the fact that if the engine seizes up while driving, could lead to a sudden crash. Problem confirmed by a local mechanic. Not been inspected by anyone else other than a different independent mechanic. The first sign of a problem is a check engine light, followed by a sputter in the engine and lack of consistent speed control, first appeared in February, and lead to 2 sets of spark plugs being replaced

The vehicle has started going through coolant and the exhaust has a sweet smell. It has the 1.5 litre ecoboost that has an active recall. I believe this is the issue. We still owe more than its worth and cannot afford to have a known recall issue cost us our transportation. It is only a matter of time before it destroys itself. I previously owned a 2014 fusion 2.0 that blew the motor due to the same issue. I had to put a new motor in that car. We picked the 1.5 engine since there were no reported issues at the time of purchase in 2022.
#11591757 |
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that the vehicle shook abnormally while starting. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the engine had previously been replaced. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that there was coolant intrusion into cylinder #2 and determined that the engine needed to be replaced for the second time. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 64,000. The repairs were made in August of last year but the mechanic stated an additional $8,200 is need for more repairs.

Check engine light was activated on my 2017 Fusion Titanium a week ago. Took car to the dealership on 5/25/24 and was informed that a coolant leak had caused a "milkshake" in the engine, which (as many others are reporting) now needs to be replaced--at a cost of $8000. Vehicle went out of warranty in late 2023.

Coolant intrusion into cylinder 2 cause misfires and lead to failure 2.0L fusion platinum with 90,0000 miles Noticed low coolant level, sloshing novices behind the dash). Machine said the did hear any, I was quite loud for 6 months. Always on excel and sometimes waterfall sounds at stops. Flushed and replaced coolant. Pressure tested 40 min. Sloshing noises started 3 days later. Level Dropped again and caused a missfire. All plugs replaced. Pressure test overnight, no leaks or coolant drop per dealer. Sent home with a nice bill and statement saying nothing is wrong. Rep gets frustrated why I keep asking why and were is the coolant going. Recommended I buy an extended warranty plan. 3rd time same misfire. Called and told me there is coolant in the cylinder and is $9,500 to replace. I wish the customer could she the photos from the scopes. It’s just hard to trust...

I recently experienced a problem with my 2017 Ford Fusion. The check engine light came on and the car was riding rough. I took it to a local mechanic and he determined that the spark plugs needed to be replaced. He replaced them and did a tune up and the car seemed fine. Two days later the check engine light came on again and the car started riding rough again. I took it back to the same place and he said one of the spark plugs blew again. He did some more research and found a TSB regarding my issue. Their is a known design flaw in these cars that were manufactured between 2017-2019 that allows coolant to leak into the engine. I made an appointment with a Ford dealer to confirm and I was told that my engine would need to be replaced. At this point, when I started...

Proven engine defect & current class action law suite. My dealer wants $8000. That is a lot of money for us. To replace engine (May 15th 2024). Can you help with information, what should I do, signing up for Class action lawsuit. I’m probably going to pay the $8000. Because dealer is refusing to cover cost and we are desperate to get vehicle back in use. Also my vehicle when VIN is ran shows no recall but clearly fulls into recall category???? Confused on that. Can you please contact me with ANY help

2017 ford fusion se with roughly 70,000 miles blew its engine in route to Wisconsin from Illinois. Less than 1.5 hrs into the drive, highway, steady speed, sudden drop in speed and white smoke out the back. Immediately pulled off road and happened to be within minutes from a Ford dealership so I dropped it there. Today, [XXX] they advised that the engine rebuild + new turbo would be a 12,000 repair. The car itself is worth about $10-12k in good condition. This car has had no major issues and has been regularly maintained at a ford dealership. Regular oil changes and any repairs were done with Ford! Now, the 3rd cylinder has heavy scoring which is causing pressure issues and oil blowing out the dipstick. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

2017 Ford Fusion engine failed while driving in heavy traffic on I10 due to low coolant level/high engine temperature as described in campaign 22-2229 (vehicles equipped with a 2.0L EcoBoost engine may exhibit a low coolant level, white exhaust smoke and/or a runs rough condition with or without an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL)). Replaced engine assembly (62,897 miles) at the direction of Ford Dealer.

White smoke started to come out the tailpipe. Check engine light came on a day later. Had codes run, misfire cylinder 4. Changed the spark plugs. Cleared up for a couple of days. Came on again when car struggled to start. Noticed coolant was low after engine temperature warning came on. Pulled over immediately. Checked the coolant and oil for cross contamination. Had my car towed to a shop to look at. Found out it had a blown head gasket causing coolant to leak. Have had the car a couple of years and love it. Was made aware of potential coolant intrusion issue (that is known in fusions and escapes) months after I bought it. The repair from ford will be, replace the short block and head gasket, which will cost me several thousand dollars. Car is at 135k miles.

1. Vehicle went into "limp mode" while driving on the highway. 2. Safety was at risk - Starting slowing down immediately in rush hour traffic. Could not accelerate. Pulled onto shoulder. 3. Dealer could not reproduce. 4. Not inspected by manufacturer, police, or insurance. 5. No warning lamps lit prior to incident. Vehicle running normally prior to incident. Restarted the car and issue was no longer present.

My vehicle is exhibiting the same defects that are included in the NHTSA customer satisfaction program 21N12 regarding a coolant intrusion. When hooked up to a scanner it reports DTCs P0300 and P0301-P0303. Is my understanding that this is a safety concern as it could cause the engine to fail and a fire to erupt. Unfortunately by the time this was brought to my attention as of today's date May 2nd 2024, My bed has not been recalled and it does not meet the stipulations of the customer satisfaction program as the current millage exceeds the 84,000 mi specified. I have noticed The coolant needing refilled several times over the years I have owned the vehicle. And this is the third time that I've had issues with misfirings, that required changing of spark plugs and ignition coils to correct. The frequency of the misfirings and some concerns that my mechanic...

I am the only owner and driver of vehicle with just under 70,000 miles. The vehicle has regular service maintenance with original dealership purchased from and no leaks or major problems have been detected during any visit. On Saturday 4/13 after battery was replaced, the check engine light came on. Engine coolant temperature too high warning came on shortly thereafter. Upon arriving to destination and car sitting for 4 hours, both lights went off. No issues the next two days with very minimal driving. On Tuesday 4/16 car was driven about 30 minutes and had issue restarting after sitting for about an hour. Upon restart, both warning lights reappeared. When car began to sputter at 65mph highway speeds, a flashing coolant warning was coupled with audio warning. Hazard lights and light traffic allowed car to be safely driven back to street, but eventually vehicle lost all acceleration. It was then...

Last week (today is April 16, 2024) I noticed when I start my car lots of smoke is coming out the back. Days later the engine light appears and starts flashing then my car starts to shake and stall as I’m driving putting me and others on the road at risk. Before I break it starts to stall so I try to break way ahead of time before needing to so I don’t put cars in front of me at risk. I’ve taken it to a mechanic and he’s telling me it seems to be a manufacturing issue with the engine. My 2L engine head gasket #2 cylinder on a 2017 Ford fusion seems to be the problem. This is very unfortunate as I have been in love with my car since I first purchased it brand new in the beginning of 2018. I have a service appointment with ford...

I have the 2.5 liter engine in my 2017 ford fusion but it’s also experiencing the same coolant leak symptoms of other engine models of this year of vehicle. Car has no visible leaks but coolant levels keep dropping. Temp gauge goes up and down back and forth. Car seems to be sputtering while driving. Currently just passed 100,000 miles this week. I’ve had the vehicle for 7 years and it seems like recall after recall.

While driving on the interstate car began to excessively shake and check engine light flashed for almost a minute then stopped. Was approaching exit to residence location and was able to get there. Once at home, car was then sluggish to start but no check engine light was on. Attempted to drive car in a safe area to see if it would repeat or light would come on. This was on a Sunday, therefore the dealership was closed. Light did come back on solidly and took car to dealership that next day, Monday. Was told coolant intrusion into the engine. After the incident and in doing research, appears to be a known issue in this vehicle.

Coolant intrusion - coolant leaking into the motor because of the engine block design and the head gasket failing. Can cause fire
#11578851 |
The local Ford dealership has confirmed that the engine has an internal issue causing misfires in cylinder 3. It has recommended an expensive full engine replacement, approximately $10,000. Misfires shake the vehicle while driving, which may cause serious accidents and injuries.
#11578080 |
2017 Ford Fusion. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that there was an internal coolant leak to cylinder #2. The dealer stated that the engine block needed to be replaced. The check engine warning light was illuminated, turned off and a few days later came back on. Engine temperature was moderate at first and then sporadically moved between moderate and hot. Per NHTSA: Coolant Intrusion is a common problem amongst 2.0 EcoBoost Engine. Current Ford fix is replace engine block with a new design. Ford is aware of the design flaw in these cars and refuses to make things right with current owners.

A couple of weeks ago, heater would not work and a very cold day. We stopped after a while for gas and then the heat went on. This went on every time we used the car. So we got an appt at local Ford place last week, where we bought car. Took them several days but turns out the coolant is leaking into the engine and we need a new motor to the tune of 7000 bucks. The car never warned us of any malfunctions. It only has 58,000 miles on it but because it is a 2017 it is out of warrantee. I later learned that the EcoBoost cars have a lot of problems with leaking coolant into the motor. Especially the Ford Fusion and we have a 2 L EcoBoost car.

The car started shaking while driving down the road and when coming to a stop. The gears were not shifting properly. I took it to a mechanic shop and they told me several different things "could" be wrong, supposedly fixed it, $700 for that. Started shaking and shift gear problems again, took it in again and spent $2800 for the supposed fix. Several days later same thing, took it back again and they said to take it to a transmission shop because they couldn't do anymore. Found out there was a recall on the torque and the different mechanic "fixed" that. Now it won't shift into several of the gears. Over $4500.00 spent! Transmission
#11571795 |
The car was shaking when I started it. Took it to the dealership and they told me it got the coolant intrusion into the cylinder and now they need to replace the whole engine with a short block engine. I believe it's a design defect by Ford!

Engine light came on and heat and defrosters stopped working in vehicle. Took it into dealer and was told diagnostic code was for misfire in cylinder 3. They did a coolant leak test and immediately found coolant leaking into the engine. Was told this was a known issue with the 2.0L ecoboosts (TSB 22-2229 dated 6/9/22) and that I would need an entire engine block replacement. Due to being out of warranty I would be on the hook for $6,856 for the repairs. Car only had 45,000 miles on it at time of service.

I went to my dealership because of a check engine light. After many hours of searching, I was told that a coolant leak had been found. I was informed that the head gasket was damaged and causing a leak into the engine. The cheapest repair would cost nearly $8000. The extended warranty that I purchased for the car has expired. Searching Google, I see that Ford is aware of the problem, and has known about it for some time. Ford should not be able to get away with this.

My 2017 Ford Fusion has a coolant issue. Per TSB 19-2139. Ford has a known issue in the cylinder walls and had a program available until November 2022. Sadly this program ended and they still have issues. It has been verified at a third party mechanic and Ford doesn't want to assist in this issue.

Hesitation, lack of power, jerking on acceleration. If felt like an ignition misfire and the engine codes suggested multiple misfires. A power balance test was performed and verified there is a misfire on cylinder 2. The spark plug from 2 was swapped with cylinder 1 and the misfire was in cylinder 1. The spark plugs were replaced November, 2023. The plugs look contaminated-seems to be with engine coolant due to a head gasket failure. The coolant reservoir was empty indicating a coolant leak. They then introduced air into cylinder 2 and the coolant rose inside the coolant reservoir. The gasket is failing between the cylinder and one or more of the water passages beside the cylinder. Ford has since updated their engine design to correct this concern so they knew of the issues. There is a current recall on the 1.5L engine however, not the 2.0L. There are multiple class...

The contact owns a 2017 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the spark plugs. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, and it was determined that there was a misfire in cylinder #3 due to low compression. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to Technical Service Bulletin: 19-2243. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 112,000.

On [XXX], I entered onto [XXX] from Sparks, Nevada eastbound when a check engine light and oil overheat warning came on. I limped the car to the nearest exit [(XXX)]. I had my grandson with me and he was scared. I checked my coolant level and realized that it was dry. I put coolant to the max line of the reserve tank and drove 25 miles to Carson City. When I took it into the dealership at Capital Ford on December 26, 2023, their service manager said this year had a poor design of the engine (2.0L) which led to coolant intrusion into the cylinders. Two days later, they confirmed. My complaint is the FORD manufacturer knew of this issue and had posted several TSBs, but has only issued a recall the 1.5 L engine. I'm now told that since my car is 1600 miles out of warranty, too bad....

2017 Ford Fusion 2.0L ecoboost engine is available for inspection. The engine block was designed incorrectly and coolant leaks into the cylinder. There is a risk of fire from the intrusion of coolant in the cylinder. Many other people are having this issue and they did recall the 1.5L engine. They need to on the 2.0L as well. My local mechanic identified the issue and I called the Ford dealer who didn't even need to see it said I need a new engine based off the mechanic's testing. After losing coolant and constantly refilling with no coolant being seen coming from the vehicle, the check engine light comes on. The code listed states that one of the cylinders is misfiring. This is due to coolant in the cylinder. With the risk of fire, Ford needs to put a recall on this issue for the 2.0L ecoboost.

Check engine has been off and on for last 500 miles. Regular maintenance. Took to dealership, Codes found of P0303, P0300, and p2196. Found coolant was low and confirmed coolant intrusion into engine. Per dealership either bad head, head gasket, or block and ford recommended replacing engine. Quoted $9000 in repairs to replace engine. Declined repair due to cost. According to NHTSA this is a common issue and should be addressed. Unsafe to drive however repair costs, and now inability to trade in, force driving until no longer can
