The transmission is not functioning properly. The vehicle experiences jerking, slipping, bucking, sudden and/or delayed acceleration, and transmission failure. There is a check engine light and a transmission failure warning sign that comes on. This is a safety hazard as the car does not accelerate reliably and will temporarily stall in the middle of intersections, highways, onramps, etc. I talked to several mechanics who say that this is likely due to a PCM issue. I brought it to a Ford dealership to check into, but they could not run a diagnostics test because there was no recall associated with my VIN.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the message "transmission too hot pull over" suddenly displayed, and moments later the vehicle shut off. After eventually restarting the engine, the vehicle was driven to the nearby fuel station and later towed to the local dealer. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer was not yet notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 40,000.
Transmission overheating, jerking, hesitant and lost gear while driving
I enjoy driving my 2017 Ford Focus, but the glaring negative against my vehicle is the transmission. Once per year I find myself at a dealership because my Focus starts to shudder after acceleration from a full stop. This phenomena shakes the vehicle, alerting everyone inside that something is wrong. No warning lights appear on the dash from discovery of the problem until servicing. Once the shuddering starts happening, it will happen more and more frequently until it cannot be ignored and the vehicle needs to be fixed. I don't haul trailers. There are not that many miles on the Focus (under 60,000). I've even adjusted my driving habits to change speeds as gradually as possible so as to not put any undue strain on the transmission. Nevertheless, the problem keeps reoccurring and I keep having to lean on the existing powertrain warranty to get rid of the problem... temporarily....
2017 Ford Focus, continuous transmission problems. I have had the clutch and transmission control replaced 2 times already under factory wannary. It is just outside of the powertrain warranty and now the dealer is telling me it needs to be replaced again. It has 41,000 miles.
Feels like gear is slipping when going from a stop to moving (1st to 2nd shifting)
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the vehicle failed to accelerate as needed. The contact stated that the vehicle jerked, lost motive power and stalled without warning. The contact waited for the vehicle cool down, restarted the vehicle, and the vehicle operated normally. On another occasion, the vehicle lost motive power and stalled with the transmission failure message was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was informed that no failure was found. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was 70,000.
I was driving and all of a sudden could not go over 30 miles an hour. I took it 3 dealerships 1 including a Ford Dealership. What I have been told is that there have been many issues with this type/manufacturer of transmission. The diagnostic codes that are coming out when being run are P072C P2832 P0219 P2578 Ford dealership states that the internal fork stop inside the transmission is broken. It needs a partial rebuild including forks, case, clutchesm], and related parts.
The transmission strutted or slips when accelerating from a stop
While driving 2017 Focus on 8/14/22, the car began to shutter. When owner stopped to buy gas, the car would not restart until about 10 minute later . Then it would not go into reverse. Made it home. Next day, 8/15/22, while driving, it began to shutter again, the Transmission overheating warning light appeared, and vehicle immediately stopped running. Pulled off to side of road. It would not restart. Was towed to a local repair shop (not a Ford dealership). The repair shop ran a diagnostic and reported 4 PCM and 7 TCM fault codes. (See attachment.)Vehicle has not been repaired. Vehicle has approx 130,000 miles.
My transmission started to slip , took it to a garage then I had to WALK through A VERY BAD area in Philadelphia. Ford Roadside towed it to Chapman’s on Roosevelt Blvd on 8/9 where we bought it. They still haven’t looked at it because they’re so busy and backed up and in the meantime I have no way to get to work & it’s costing me $40 a day for Lyft and my mental health. The car only has 60,000 miles, I shouldn’t have to be dealing with this
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated while driving from a complete stop and at various speeds, the vehicle was shuddering. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring while driving. Additionally, the contact stated would fail to respond when depressing the accelerator pedal and would not go pass a certain speed. The contact stated that the RPM would reeved when depressing the accelerator pedal but the vehicle would fail to respond. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission clutch needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the transmission clutch had been replaced every 4,000 to 7,000 miles on six occasions. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 5,000.
Transmission module failure. Car stalls and shutters when driving causing possible car accident. Took to Ford dealership service center and they found Transmission module failure needs replacement immediately can cause auto accident. Warning engine light comes on.
I financed a 2017 Ford Focus se 6 speed manual in March of 2020 (it’s now aug 2022), and about a month ago I was driving a main hwy when I needed to downshift due to traffic. I go to put it in 3rd and instead it slips into 1st. (It’s not suppose to allow you to do that, states in the owners manual bc it’s a safety feature). Meanwhile it is stuck in 1st, redlining, as I’m in the middle of a busy highway unable to do anything. I had to push the car off the road in order to not get hit by oncoming cars. Called Ford, called the dealership, found out there’s a recall on the engine and the transmission but neither of them would Honor the recall. Attorney’s won’t do a thing about it, and now I’m stuck paying $8k on a car I can no...
On Friday July 15th around 7PM, my wife and I were driving out of town to visit family. We stopped at a gas station along the highway to make sure we had gas an everything before getting too far out of town. We had no issues when we stopped but after leaving we tried getting on the highway and after merging the car reved up very high and seemed to have dropped into a low heat like 1st or 2nd. We attempted to get off the highway but with this low gear the car could not do more than about 20Mph. We finally made it off the highway and checked everything we could think of that could cause this issue but found nothing. We had to get the car towed home because besides being stuck in a very low forward gear when shifting to drive, we also lost reverse. After...
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated while driving approximately 15 MPH, the vehicle was shuddering while shifting gear. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was previously diagnosed with transmission failure. The vehicle was repaired with a new clutch and linkage; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 5,000.
Failure of the encase power train transmission. Delay is shifting & transmission to shift gears gets stuck. COMPLETELY unsafe when pulling out into traffic. Driver is unsure if the transmission will engage or not. Unable to accelerate at times until transmission engages. Sounds like gears are being stripped on the automatic Transmission. Started in May 2021 & continues to happen daily.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated while driving 10 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local Pep Boys where it was diagnosed that the failure was associated with the fuel system and fuel tank. The dealer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where an unknown repair and an unknown software update were completed; however, the vehicle failed to start a month later. The contact later drove the vehicle but the vehicle would not exceed 10 MPH. The vehicle was towed to a second dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission control module had failed; however, the parts were on national back order. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist as the VIN was not included in a recall...
In June of 2021 my car started shuddering when shifting into 1st and 2nd gears. I am a very cautious, defensive driver but had to really baby the car to try to avoid the shuddering and learned to shift around 9 mph for 1st gear and 19 mph for 2nd gear. However as the year progressed, the issue became worse and had to schedule a diagnostic test at Roush Ford in Hilliard Ohio in December which cost me $150, and place not only a financial burden upon me but also those who had to help me get to and from the dealership and appointments and church. Then in January 2022, my car was in the shop for 8 days while Roush Ford repaired the transmission by replacing the clutch that Ford continues to use in the vehicles even knowing it is a problem, which cost me $778.51. This has been...
Vehicle shudders in lower gears typically starting from a stop as it shifts up in gears. I consider this a safety issue considering it impacts the driveability of the vehicle and limits the ability to get out of the way of traffic if needed. The symptoms are exactly as described in earlier 2011-2016 Focus model power transmission recall.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the accelerator pedal was depressed and the vehicle hesitated to respond. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was able to continue driving. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring while driving. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the transmission clutch needed to be replaced. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the failure was associated with an unknown recall; however, the year, make, and model of the vehicle was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated while driving from a complete stop, the vehicle started shuddering. The contact stated that the failure also occurred while driving and accelerating between 30-70 MPH. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was able to continue driving. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred several times while driving and had worsened. The contact stated upon starting the vehicle and attempting to drive, the gear shifter remained seized in park(P). The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the transmission had failed. The local dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that she needed to pay a fee for diagnostic test. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist as the VIN...
I am pretty sure that this is not the battery. I had my vehicle towed to the mechanic and the code that he’s getting from the computer is the transmission. The clutch seems to be stuck somehow and will not engage into gears. I can get it started, but it won’t go anywhere. It will start and the lights come on. The check engine light is on, and it is something regarding the transmission. Changing the battery would make know difference. The car has always stuttered when taking off from a parked position. And makes noises when there’s a change in the “gears “
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated that the vehicle would hesitate without warning while driving at various speeds. The contact also stated that unknown warning lights would intermittently flash on the instrument panel while driving. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and no defects were found. One day while driving in reverse, the gear shifter failed to move from the reverse(R) position after multiple attempts. Once the contact was able to shift the vehicle into drive(D), the vehicle would not accelerate above 10 MPH with the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with transmission failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was out of warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
Car shutters heavily when approaching 2500-3500 RPM. Mostly felt before shift change out of 1st gear in automatic, but also felt in same range when left in 1st on select shift. Shudder causes slow acceleration from a stop. Very slow acceleration avoids the shutter.
I recently purchased my 2017 Ford Focus from Carmax in August of 2021. At the time it had 52,675 miles on it. I now have 64,000 miles on the vehicle. I began to notice a few weeks after purchase of the vehicle that upon acceleration from a stop sign or red light, the vehicle would shake or shudder slightly but then cease . This only happened upon acceleration and not while idling. However , it was so slight that it didn't seem to be an issue. In the past month , I have noticed now that the shaking and shuddering is getting extremely heavy upon acceleration and it is starting to scare me. I contacted Ford and they told me that there was not a specific recall on my VIN in particular but that they WERE INDEED aware of serious control module issues and clutch issues for the Ford Focus...
The transmission in my 2017 Ford Focus is slipping, shuttering, and jerking. It also will hesitate when accelerating. It has been to the Ford Maintenance Department at least 4 times to have the transmission “fixed”. It will fail with 1000-10000 miles after it supposedly gets fixed. We have also been turned away from Ford, saying that nothing is wrong or it’s within fords criteria. This is not normal for a car!
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 55 MPH, the vehicle was shuddering while decelerating. In addition, the accelerator pedal was depressed however, the vehicle failed to respond. The contact stated that the accelerator pedal was depressed several times before the vehicle started to operate as needed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the transaxle dash clutch and fly wheel needed to be replace. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 31,000.
TRANSMISSION FAILURE, car shudders when starting from take off, will not go forward while in gear, engine light came on, would not go into reverseye, I could have been rear ended struck, Unknown if anything else was an issue

The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with transmission control module failure due to a faulty battery. The dealer repaired the transmission. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The vehicle had previously had two transmissions replaced. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed and the engine revved, but the vehicle hesitated to accelerate. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The manufacturer advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 48,000.
The transmission in this car has burned a clutch up at 30k miles and replaced by Ford after having to twist their leg to do it. 10k miles later it was slipping again. Currently it is at 70k miles and the clutch is going out again. Ford refuses to take responsibility for this faulty transmission since it is a 2017 model and not included in the class action suit for the model just a year prior, although it is the same transmission. The slipping, stalling and jerking is a danger when pulling out into traffic and I hope it does not cause me to get in an accident and have to sue them for even more than I need to sue them for now for selling me faulty unsafe junk that doesn't last and puts my families life at risk.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated while attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start. The contact, an independent mechanic, examined the vehicle and diagnosed that the powertrain control module (PCM) was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure but no assistance was provided. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
CAR WILL SHUTTER FROM A STOP TO ACCELERATE TO SPEED. SCARY SOME TIMES THINKING YOUR GOING TO LOSE SPEED AND GET HIT. THIS HAPPENS MANY TIME, BUT BELOW YOU ONLY ALOW FOR ONE DATE OF INCIDENT, HAPPENS ALMOST EVERYDAY I DRIVE
The contact's son owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated while his son was starting the vehicle, an unknown shift pattern warning light was illuminated. The driver was able to drive the vehicle at 6 MPH to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the transmission control module to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V845000 (Power Train) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated that while at a complete stop, the vehicle would hesitate upon the depression of the accelerator pedal without warning. The contact had initially taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic who referred her to the dealer for assistance. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they were also unable to diagnose the cause of the failure. The manufacturer had been notified of the failure and informed her there were no recalls on the vehicle. The manufacturer informed her that they would cover a portion of the repair cost for the transmission; she was also given a case number. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.
My clutch causes the car to stutter when accelerating. My focus has already had a clutch replacement under warranty. I am now at 76k miles and my car has started stuttering again.
The contact's mother owns a 2017 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that the vehicle would hesitate upon the depression of the accelerator pedal without warning. The contact's mother initially took the vehicle to the dealer where they informed her that the clutch within the transmission needed to be replaced. Her mother then took the vehicle to Kurtis Chevrolet, Inc. (5369 Hwy 70 W, Morehead City, NC 28557) where the vehicle was purchased and was provided the same information as the other dealer. Her mother was then given an estimate for the cost of a new transmission. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred her to NHTSA for assistance. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
On multiple occasions while driving on highways with speed limits 55 or greater the vehicles suddenly de-accelerated rpm dropping to 1-2 rpms and suddently without warning then accelerating to 7-8 rpms, cars and trucks. Appears that the transmission gears were switching without warning and without operator shifting. Took vehicle into John F. Kennedy Ford in Conshohocken Pa., they replaced clutch plate, then we experience the symptom even words on highway, while operating a 55mph with car suddenly de-accelerating. Car under extended ford warranty 60k miles. John F. Kennedy Ford dealer in Conshohocken and Ford Corporate after calls to customer service corporate line speaking to supervisor refuses to repair the vehicle because they say they can not recreate the problem. (witness was present during each incident other than driver) Incidents occurred 09/05/2021 on NJ Expressway and 09/12/2021 on Pa Highway (09122021 occurred after clutch plate was repaired to "fix the problem"...
The transmission shudders when accelerating, I have also temporarily lost control of my vehicle when merging onto a highway.
My transmission has been slipping ever since I bought it a yr ago in 2020. It is a 2017 Ford Focus. A few days ago it started making occassional whining sounds. I drove to work and engine light came on and it wouldn't start. Mechanic got it started, moving shifter and rolling it a bit. I drove to shop and they said transmission problem. My friend showed me her 2015 extd warranty on tranny clutch. Ford must not have fixed the problem. I also rode in a 2018 today which she said was also slipping. Do we need another multi lawsuit?
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated, and the vehicle would not shift into gear. The contact veered to the side of the road, then the warning message "Transmission Hot, Wait Five Minutes" appeared on the instrument panel. The contact stated she waited and when she drove the vehicle, the warning message "Transmission Hot, Wait Five Minutes" reappeared. The contact stated she veered to the side of the road and waited. The contact stated she was able to drive the vehicle to her residence. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnosed that the transmission clutch A and transmission clutch...
The vehicle only has 34,000 miles on it and I have to get the clutch replaced. I was driving on the highway when I suddenly received a "Transmission Fault Service Now" error. The forks also have to be replaced with this. The car has had regular servicing. I purchased it from a ford dealer when it had 17,000 miles on it. Consumer stated vehicle seems to have the same nhtsa campaign 18V845000.
I have had a problem with my Ford Focus for months. The car jerks, rattles and shakes when I am driving it. I have taken it back to Ford three times. January 2021, I attempted to get an appointment at Autonation Ford on Phillips Highway Jacksonville, FL. I was told that their repairman had COVID-19 and they could not service my car. I called again and was told that their transmission service man quit and that I had to take the car to Autonation Ford in Orange Park on the other side of Jacksonville. Time 1) I took the car to the dealer in Orange Park on March 16, 2021. They told me that it met specifications and they would not fix it under warranty. Time 2) April 14, 2021, I took it to Autonation Ford in Orange Park. I was told the same story. Time 3) June 17, 2021,...

The Transmission is slipping and car won't reverse. This is practically a new car. I had it for only two years and it's not drivable.
2017 Ford Focus. Less than 80,000 Miles. Without warning the vehicle losses power while driving and RPM's go up over 4000. Additionally as I approach intersections with my foot on the break preparing to stop, the RPM's, again go up over 4000 and the car lurches forward with foot on break. Emergency Transmission Fault, Service now - RED - on dash, came on after the second incident listed, does not stay on, comes on intermittently. Vehicle no longer goes into reverse. Contacted Ford Corporate 3 times. Opened Case CAS31827768J5S7L3 Known Transmissions issues with these model Fords
TRANSMISSION WILL CHATTER AND CLANK AT TIMES WHEN SHIFTING OUT OF FIRST GEAR. BOUGHT THIS CAR IN 2019 AND STARTED MAKING SMALL CLANKING NOISES A FEW DAY AFTER BUYING IT.
WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP, THE TRANSMISSION SLIPS. MUCH LIKE A SIMILAR RECALL WITH THE ISSUE OF TRANSMISSION SEALS GOING BAD AND WETTING THE DRY CLUTCH PACK.
