I own a 2018 Ford Edge SEL 2.0L EcoBoost (VIN: [XXX] ). On August 24, 2021, with approximately 72,062 miles, the vehicle was taken to a Ford dealership due to engine performance issues. The dealership diagnosed coolant intrusion into the engine cylinders. The dealership determined the engine was not repairable and required full engine replacement. The repair invoice explicitly states coolant present in the cylinder and replacement of the engine was necessary. I paid $5,602.85 out of pocket for the repair. The vehicle was properly maintained, and I have oil change and service records from that period. No warning or misuse contributed to the failure. I later contacted Ford Motor Company to request reimbursement, as this failure appears consistent with the widely reported 2.0L EcoBoost coolant intrusion defect affecting similar Ford vehicles. Coolant is rapidly leaking into the number 2 cylinder causing rough idle, extreme venting form exhaust. Vehicle cannot be driven without causing catastrophic engine damage which could result in loss of power creating a safety issue, or engine fire. Ford knows about the design defect for years and refuses to recall the affected vehicle. The photos below are not my vehicle. They were downloaded from the internet. I have a 2018 Ford Edge. In late October of 2025 my engine light illuminated. The diagnosis was a P301, indicating a misfire in cylinder one. Spark plugs and cylinder 1 coil was replaced. No problems until December and engine light came on again, same code. Coil was replaced again and in January engine light came on again. Ford released TSB 19-2346 on 12-19-19 describing a possible coolant leak in to the cylinders and a engine replacement was suggested. I feel a recall is necessary to prevent safety issues created by slower than normal acceleration and /or engine fires.

The coils kept popping up check engine light. And turns out it was an injector failing, and cause my car to jerk a lot, and not accelerate when needing. My car would almost try to stop accelerating while on highway and jerk so much that it felt like I was going to wreck on the middle of a freeway.

Ford has a known problem with Ecoboost engines can leak coolant into the engine’s valves. This happened to our vehicle and we had to replace the engine due to misfiring cylinders. The check engine light kept coming on. We intially replaced all spark plugs and coils. Then after that didn't resolve the problem, the entire engine had to be replaced.

My ford edge has a problem where coolant mysteriously disappears a flood like it’s getting vacuumed into engine cylinders causing the engine to run rough with white smoke coming from exhaust. This is on my 2.0l turbocharged ecoboost engine and I have already seen other consumer reports about other having the same issue all over social media and Ford will not do anything about it and will charge you almost $10,000 dollars for something that was their fault. They made a mistake in creating the engine block and thus now many people are suffering because of this.

2.0L EcoBoost engine - while driving the 2018 Ford Edge with approximately 50K miles, the vehicle displayed a rapid overtemp condition and then a check engine light for a misfire on cylinder 2. Coolant was almost empty and I re-filled the resivoir and dealer reset the check engine light. This happened about two more times with the coolant resivoir along with multiple check engine lights for the #2 cylinder. Each time the Ford dealer reset the check engine light for the #2 cylinder but did not give information about why the coolant level was dropping to almost zero. I went to a different dealer who referred me to the Ford TCB 22-2229. I Spoke to Ford customer service directly and the engine long block was replaced at my expense since Ford would not pay for the repair.

The defect involves the engine block or cylinder head design, which allows engine coolant to intrude into the engine's combustion cylinders. Coolant mixing with the engine oil will cause a catastrophic failure and can lead to an engine fire. Ford has issued Technical Service Bulletins TSB 19-2346 but it does not cover any cost and no recalls have been issued. This is a known manufacturing defect in which Ford is taking no accountability.

2018 Ford Edge with 119K miles. Issue has been determined to be the known issue of coolant intrusion into the cylinders. The issue was noticed while stopped at a traffic light, vehicle started "reving" and showed RPM fluctuations. On two separate occasions, the vehicle lost all ability to accelerate while driving. It's also has white smoke coming out of the exhaust and has been losing coolant at an alarming rate. After multiple inspections and other attempted fixes (water pump replacement, spark plugs replaced, fuel pump replaced), it's been determined that the coolant intrusion is to blame. The vehicle is deemed unsafe to drive in the current state and extended warranty is no longer in affect due to the mileage.

The problem began in early August 2025 when the check engine light came on and the vehicle misfired. A Ford mobile technician inspected it before 8/23/25, confirmed Diagnostic Code P0303 (Cylinder 3 Misfire), but said it was likely just a bad ignition coil. Based on that, I went to Midas on 8/23/25 for a tune-up and coil check. On 9/29/25, the check engine light returned and for the first time the coolant over-temperature warning illuminated. Midas confirmed coolant intrusion into Cylinder 3: borescope and pressure test showed leakage, leak-down test failed with air entering the coolant reservoir, and visible coolant loss was present. At 80,445 miles, the engine was deemed unsafe and required full replacement. Hawk Ford confirmed no warranty extensions or programs applied. The repair cost was $10,500 out of pocket. Driving felt weird like the vehicle was stuttering and I heard liquid sloshing around as I was driving. Our 2018 Ford Edge started idling rough after spark plug change and after dealer tested it they told us it had engine coolant in #2 Cylinder and that driving it could lead to catastrophic engine failure. Only fix is complete engine block replacement (Recommended by Ford in Bulletin TSB22-2229) along with new turbo as it may also have been damaged by coolant leak. The engine failed before 55,000 miles. Collant is getting into the engine and causing a cylinder failure. This is a known problem for this engine. The Ford mechanic and other mechanics stated that they no longer use that engine due to the problem. Since I did not purchase an extended warranty, Ford is requiring nearly $12,000 to replace the engine. Started rough 1 morning, then ran fine within 1 mile. The car has been having a chemical smell when it starts. I recently was driving from San Antonio, Texas to Austin, Texas and received a warning that my car was overheating. Cylinder misfire, caused coolant intrusion into cylinder caused by defective motor wall. This could have caused by engine to lock up while driving and cause an accident. Luckily I was able to get it to the dealer before that happened. FORD is aware of this defective motor in these models but has refused to issue a recall. I had a Cylinder misfire (code P0302) due to coolant intrusion into the engine cylinder. This was due to a crack in the engine block. This is a common issue with the 2.0L ecoboost engine. No recall. Ford's fix was for me to replace the long block engine with a redesign version to fix the casting problem. This cost was covered by me, even though this is a known common issue by Ford that requires an engine replacement. The engine had 78,193 miles on it, so it was out of warranty. On August 19, 2025, Koons Woodbridge Ford determined my 2028 Ford Edge requires a long block replacement due to coolant intrusion into cylinder 3, per customer invoice RO# [XXX] Tag# [XXX]. This is a known issue, which is documented by technical service bulletin 22-2229. Aimee DePugh, Koons Woodbridge Ford Service Advisor, informed me that I should contact Ford to request reimbursement. However, the guidance I received was to send the dealership service manager written correspondence requesting the dealership restore the engine at their expense because of the known engine design flaw. I have a 2018 Ford Edge Titanium Eco Boost with 115,000 miles on it. I bought it used in 2018 with 17,000 miles on it. The engine light came on and I took it to a repair shop. The codes are p0303 and p0316. They inspected the cylinder and there is coolant leaking into cylinder 3. Apparently this is very common for this vehicle and is described as a design flaw. With this problem being very common and a known design flaw from Ford, I strongly encourage a recall.

Light came back on a few weeks later, it was discovered that coolant was leaking into cylinder 3 and causing the misfire. Ford recommends that the engine be replaced. This appears to be an issue that Ford is very aware of and many Ford Edges are affected, yet there is not a recall. This defect may lead to overheating and can result in the cylinder head cracking, total engine failure, and/or engine fires. This puts me and other drivers at significant risk and I am very displeased with Ford.

Found trouble code PO304 in the computers history indicates that the misfire is not coming from the spark plug or ignition coil. Checked the fuel injector and no problem was found. Removed cylinder#4=spark plug and found a small amount of evidence that coolant is entering the cylinder. There is a TSB for engine blocks cracking and causing the problem. This was found by the auto service I use. Called dealership and was told this does happen. A new engine would have to installed if my engine light comes back on. The coolant system leaked into the engine causing over heating while driving on the interstate causing the engine to stop running while passing a having to pull to the side of the road while cars were dodging me and I was almost rear-ended by a semi-truck. We took it to a independent service center and it was confirmed. This car was sold to me by a Martinez Auto Sales person names Luis Ramirez. He told me the car was in good condition. The 2018 Ford Edge I currently own and according to my research, there have been several class action suits that have been filed due to the customer experiencing "coolant intrusion" into the engine rendering the vehicle useless without repair. My vehicle only has 50,000 miles on it and needs $6-7,000.00 worth of repairs to correct the problem. The current resale value without this issue is $10-13,000.00 but is now worth basically scrap.
