2018 FORD EDGE Engine Problems

The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled with an abnormally loud sound coming from the engine compartment, with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was able to be restarted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. I brought in my vehicle for regular service (I.e., oil change) on June 2nd and all was well though i did get my rear brakes done. By June 19th, my check engine light came in and when I brought in my vehicle later that same morning, I was informed coolant had leaked into the engine, now requiring an entire engine replacement which I was told would cost 8500. I have since learned this is a fairly common issue is this model ford edge with eco boost engines and am appalled ford has not issued a recall for this defect.

The check engine light came on, and I brought it to a Ford dealership. They confirmed that it has coolant intrusion into the cylinders and needs a new engine. They also informed me that my year, make, model and engine were recalled by Ford for this issue, but for some reason my VIN doesn't fall under it. Ford agreed to pay 40% of the cost which leaves me with a bill for $4,958.23 for a vehicle which should be covered under the recall. This should be covered under the recall. I was told to file a complaint with you. Apparently this is a safety issue that can cause the vehicle to suddenly shut off and cause a fire. The issue Any help would be great.

Latent defect in the engine, allowing coolant into cylinder 3 Car could potentially caused by ignition system faults or fuel delivery issues and also rough idle. Mechanic checked the code on the car and the cylinder 3, confirmed the automobile would need a new engine P0303 code- Cylinder 3 misfire that is created from a faulty engineering design

Ford’s 2.0L EcoBoost engine failed on our on a 2018 Edge. The vehicle and engine are available for inspection. The engine suffered a catastrophic failure and must be replaced per Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 19-2346. Ford issued TSB 19-2346 on coolant loss/need for engine replacement in 2019. They had a class action lawsuit in 2012 on EcoBoost engines allowing coolant in cylinders. Ford had a chronic problem with these engines for years but kept selling them. There is a recall for some 2015-2018 Edges and 2017-2019 Fusion/MKZ/Escape/MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L EcoBoost engines. I’m not sure why my 2018 Edge is not part of the recall, since the engine has failed per TSB 19-2346. The problem was diagnosed by a certified mechanic, diagnosis attached. I filed a case (#[XXX]) with Ford Customer Service, who denied any responsibility because my extended powertrain warranty (which I believe lasted until 100,000 miles)...

I have had my vehicle in for regular service since I purchased it. It has had two transmissions, one to repair a prior repair and now I am told that the engine needs to be replaced. Ford has a TSB for this issue, as it is a known fault with the engine. 2.0 ecoboost engine has a known flaw that causes the engine block to crack & introduce coolant into the cylinders. This is known to typically occur between 60 & 70,000 miles. It at the very least causes a misfire; at the most extreme it allows coolant into the oil & can cause engine lockup. Ford knows this is an issue & redesigned the engine in 2020. Our car developed this issue at 65k miles & Ford left us with a $9500 bill 1 month after warranty expired for a new engine

I had bought 2018 ford edge from a small dealership.When i first bought this car it had 62,000k miles on it i barely had it for 9 months the engine blew already

Driving home from work, I noticed a warning light indicating that the car was overheating. I stopped and realized the coolant tank was empty, so I immediately put some coolant in and continued driving home. The next day, the car wouldn't start, and after I checked the engine oil, it was contaminated with water. I called a Ford dealer for repair, and they don't want to take responsibility.

Ford Ecoboost 2.0 L engine, ~95,000 miles. The check engine light came on while on a cross country drive and the diagnostic code was a cylinder 2 misfire. The vehicle would chug and sputter when started up and had trailing white smoke from the exhaust. The garage reset the code and replaced the spark plugs. 2 weeks later the engine started chugging again on start up, with white smoke and a smell of burning coolant. We took it to our mechanic locally who found coolant leaking into the cylinder. He reset the code and recommended we take it to the dealer. When I got the vehicle back, I checked the coolant to find that it was excessively low, presumably from it leaking into the cylinder for an unknown amount of time. In June of 2024 we had coolant getting into cylinder head. A new head gasket was installed and the car was ok until May of 2025 when we are faced with the same problem again. We have a 3rd party warranty program that made the repair last year but are refusing to this time. So we now a vehicle that is not drivable, is a safety risk if it is driven. Ford motor company has no assistance to offer at this time unless a recall is issued! The warranty company said since TSB’s are out that they will not cover this! If this is a Ford defect then it should be covered and repaired by them. There have been many recalls on this issue. Why not mine?

Coolant intrusion into the engine (eco boost) slow leak but failing emissions testing. engine misfires and runs hard. Only 80,000 miles on the car. Can be inspected, had it inspected by a local mechanic who confirmed the issue. No warning signs, never had a check engine light on prior to the issue. Mechanic says I need an entire long block replace. Now that I know of the warning signs, they have been ongoing for about 20,000 miles, but the only gone light just came on in April. Safety issues for this is that this can cause engine fires.

Engine long block needed replacing at 55,625 miles. Verified by Al Packer WPB , Fl., and engineer replaced. Ford paid $3300 for block while I was charged almost $3300 for labor (after discounting over $1000 from sales/service) Block design fault per Ford on TSB 22-2229. (All 2013-2015 Edge model with 2.0 Ecoboost engines need replacing.) The danger is overheating and engine seizing … could happen while driving and cause an accident. Check engine light was on. After learning about this, I checked for missing coolant, needed to top it off as it was almost empty. Then on a restart the smoke coming from tailpipe was quite obvious. (I have that on video). FORD should pay for 100% of this repair. I have had this vehicle 8years, and have 55,625 miles on 5year/60,000 warranty.

The check engine light came on. Took the car for service. The mechanic did many diagnostic tests and discovered coolant leaking into the cylinder. Advised this caused engine failure and is unsafe. The engine must be replaced. The manufacturer is aware of this problem and the unsafe driving conditions it causes. They have issued a technical service bulletin but not a recall.

Check engine light displayed despite the fact that the car seemed to be running fine. I took the car to a repair shop and then to Ford Service who documented the diagnostic code P0302 Misfire4 on Cylinder #2. They did a pressure test. and found coolantintrusion on cylinder #2. My vehicle has 47K miles on it as the vehicle sat in the garage for 2 years ( 2019/2020) during COVID, it was never used. Same dealership that we have been going to for maintenance, not sure why they did not see this from previous visits. I have seen complaints for same issue on this 2018 Edge, Ford needs to acknowledge that this is an issue.

At approximately 80K miles started to smell the odor of burning antifreeze. Was told new engine was needed due to water intrusion into engine. $5,000 later and a new engine, Ford would not acknowledge that this is a known ongoing problem with the Ecoboost engine.

Warning lamp went on. Took immediately to Ford, with only 28K miles on my 6-year-old vehicle. They diagnosed a coolant intrusion. Was told this is a "known problem" with the Ford Edge 2.0L Ecoboost engine, due to a "manufacturing defect". Had to do a "Long Block" replacement, costing me thousands of dollars.

Driving to work & the vehicle started to behave like it was running out of gas, kind of a jerky motion. I was able to get an appointment @ the local dealership, they diagnosed it as having a cracked block by cylinder #3 causing coolant to enter the cylinder. This vehicle just turned 80k miles and was service for the same thing 6 months prior, same cylinder. There was no mention of a common problem with Ecoboost design flaws until the Service Advisor shared the info with me. A new engine had to be replaced @ a cost of almost $8000. A 2018 vehicle with a perfect maintenance record and only 80k miles should be needing a total engine replacement. Ford should back their products. I essentially bought a used Edge according to Blue Book and in reality bought my car twice.

The issue is Coolant intrusion in the #2 cylinder. Rough idle when starting and white smoke. Ford bulletin 22-2229 The issue was confirmed by the dealer Capital Ford of Wilmington Dec of 2024. Yes, the problem stated prior to engine light coming on. It starting getting worse.

Car went into limp mode and over temp light came on. Coolant reservoir empty. Research led to TSB 19-2346. Prior to this CEL was coming on and off and throwing code P0301 errors. Replaced plugs and coil packs at the suggestion of the dealer but made no difference. Started out with rough idle but smoothed out after about 30 seconds. Dealer diagnosed issue and quoted $6,900.00 plus tax to install new long block. Ford finally agreed to cover part of the repair costs but still left me with a $3,000 bill. Car is now repaired but I'm hoping to recoup some of my expenses now.

A manufacturing defect has caused coolant to leak into the engine which can lead to an engine fire. Many other people with he same engine have reported the same issue.

After googling around, this is a common problem on these 2018 ford ecoboost engines and Ford obviously knows there is a problem that could cause accidents or engine fires. Luckily my kids were not in the car, otherwise this could have been catastrophic due to the loss of power while driving. Coolant leaking into engine cylinders. Had an independent service center state we need a new engine. The labor cost to replace the gasket would add up to the cost of a new engine. Told us Ford had corrected the engineering problem that caused the leak. Said it was common problem with the Ford Edge vehicle.

I bought the car and 2 days later the check engine light came on so I took it to Wendle Ford Town in Spokane Washington and I was told that the Engine was leaking antifreeze into the cylinders so I became concerned that if it was doing that then it could cause the Engine to overheat or stop unexpectedly because of overheating and cause an accident

Coolant intrusion to engine cylinder bay which leads to misfires, white smoke and constant lagging, jerking and rough starts. Dealership confirmed new engine is required to remedy this issue.

The car has 64,000 mi on it. They had to change the long block because of coolant infusion into the number 2 cylinder. They denied my lifetime warranty because I had the oil changed at the dealership twice at 6 months and 2 weeks. I had the oil changed religiously at 5, 000 or less miles at the dealership where I bought the car, Ricart Ford. Also they denied it because I changed the cabin air filter on my own.

Check engine light came on and I checked the code with a reader. The code came up to a cylinder 2 misfire. Made an appointment with local dealership for diagnostic of the issue. Before the appointment was able to happen the check engine light went off. Appointment cancelled and 2 days later the check engine light came back on so made a new appointment. Continued to drive car with no issues. Brought car in for service and received a report back that cylinder 2 & 3 misfire and was advised coolant leaking into the engine and recommended repair is a new engine. After a quick google search found that this is a widespread issue with this engine.

In September 2024 (just over 68k miles) my check engine light came on in my 2018 Ford Edge, car overheated, smoke from tailpipe and would no longer run. I had it towed to the dealership where it was determined that it needed a whole new engine. This is the same engine that is recalled or warranty extended for the Escape but not the Edge! 2 weeks later, I paid thousands of dollars to have the engine replaced. Today, less than 3 months later and only a few hundred miles after a new engine- the check engine light is flashing and the vehicle is sputtering. This vehicle is used to transport our children and get us to/from work. This is completely unacceptable and unsafe. The vehicle is, once again, unable to be driven.
