1999 DODGE INTREPID W/A 2.7L ENGINE. ENGINE FAILURE AT APPROX. 78,000 MILES. SPUN 2 ROD BEARINGS. I HEARD THE RATTLE FROM THE BOTTOM END AS I PULLED INTO WORK ONE MORNING. PULLED THE OIL PAN BEFORE IT COULD GET WORSE. I HAVE USED MOBIL1 SYNTHETIC 10W30, CHANGED EVERY 5000 MILES. CAR IS DRIVEN ALOT OF THE TIME ON THE HIGHWAY. HAVING BEEN A MECHANIC FOR 18 YRS I REBUILT THE ENGINE MYSELF. I REPLACED THE MAIN AND ROD BEARINGS, RINGS, OIL PUMP, WATER PUMP, TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER AND GASKET SET. ALSO THE CRANK WAS GROUND AND THE RODS RESIZED, ALONG WITH HAVING ALL THE ENGINE PARTS CLEANED. I TOOK NUMEROUS PICTURES AND KEPT THE OFFENDING COMPONENTS. I WAS WITHOUT MY CAR FOR 3 WEEKS AND HAD TO PAY FOR A RENTAL.
DT: THE TIMING CHAIN WAS GETTING READY TO SNAP. TOOK VEHICLE TO THE DEALER BECAUSE THE ENGINE WAS KNOCKING AND MAKING A FUNNY NOISE. DEALER STATED THAT IF CONSUMER HAD TO DRIVE MUCH FURTHER IT WOULD SNAP WHILE DRIVING IT. THERE WAS OIL SLUDGE BUILT UP IN THE ENGINE. THIS HAPPENED ON MARCH 15, 2005.*AK
DT: THE CONSUMER COMPLAINED ABOUT ENGINE FAILURE ON 1999 DODGE INTREPID. CONSUMER WERE DRIVING THE VEHICLE WHEN THE ENGINE LOCKED AND THEY DID NOT HAVE ANY POWER STEERING OR POWER BRAKES. THE SPEED WAS ABOUT 35 MPH. THIS TOOK PLACE ON JULY 13, 2005. CONSUMER HAD NOT ANY HAD TROUBLE WITH THE CAR BEFORE THIS. TOOK CAR TO A DODGE DEALERSHIP, WHO INFORMED CONSUMER THAT ENGINE REPLACEMENT WOULD COST $6000.00. CONSUMER DID NOT PLAN TO REPLACE THE ENGINE BECAUSE THE CAR WAS ONLY WORTH ABOUT $7,000.00. THE MECHANIC SHOWED CONSUMER THAT THE VALVE SPRING BROKE, AND THE VALVE DROPPED DOWN INTO THE CYLINDER. CONSUMER UNDERSTOOD THAT THESE MOTORS WERE HAVING A LOT OF PROBLEMS. CONSUMER TALKED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAD THE CAR. THE CONSUMER CALLED MANUFACTURER. MECHANIC WANTED TO KNOW WHAT KIND OF OIL AND FILTERS THE CONSUMER WAS USING, THIS WAS THE CLEANEST ENGINE THAT THE MECHANIC...
DT: WHILE DRIVING, THE CONSUMER HEARD A TAPPING NOISE AND STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT. THE CONSUMER PROCEED TO DRIVE FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES OR A MILE IN DISTANCE. THE CONSUMER DROVE TO AN INTERSECTION AND THE ENGINE DIED. THE TAPPING NOISE STOPPED AFTER A LOUD NOISE. THE CONSUMER WAS UNABLE TO RESTART VEHICLE. HE HAD TO PUSH THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD OUT OF WAY AND CALLED FOR TOW TRUCK. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED HOME. A MECHANIC CAME BY TO CHECK THE VEHICLE AND HE SUGGESTED THE BEARING IN THE BOTTOM OF THE MOTOR BROKE. NO REPAIRS HAVE BEEN MADE AS OF YET. SUGGESTED REPLACEMENT FOR AN ENGINE COSTS $3,500.*AK

DT:CONSUMER WAS DRIVING HOME ON JUNE 13, 2005 WHEN VEHICLE BEGAN OVERHEATING. SMOKE CAME FROM UNDERNEATH HOOD, TEMPERATURE LIGHT AND OIL LIGHT CAME ON. CONSUMER PULLED TO SIDE OF FREEWAY AND SHUT OFF VEHICLE AT ABOUT 5:30 PM. CONSUMER RETURNED AT ABOUT 8:30 PM TO FIND THAT VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. CONSUMER HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO LOCAL GARAGE, WHERE MECHANIC CHECKED TO FIND NO COMPRESSION ON CYLINDERS. MECHANIC TOLD CONSUMER ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. TEMPERATURE AT TIME OF FAILURE WAS OVER 90 DEGREES.*AK *NM
THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING A RATTLING NOISE AS I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK. I PULLED THE CAR INTO A PARKING LOT AND THE ENGINE DIED AND WOULD NOT RESTART. I HAD IT TOWED TO A GARAGE WHERE THEY TOLD ME THE TIMING CHAIN HAD GONE OUT BECAUSE OF ENGINE SLUDGE. THEY ALSO TOLD ME THAT THESE 2.7 ENGINES WERE NOTHING BUT JUNK. THE MOTOR BEEDS TO BE REPLACED BUT SINCE I COULDN'T AFFORD THE $6,000 THAT WILL COST, I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED BACK TO MY HOME.

1999 INTREPID ENGINE BLEW UP DUE TO SLUDGE PROBLEMS.*MR THE ENGINE BLEW UP DUE TO ENGINE OIL STARVATION FROM OIL SLUDGE ( THE TIMING CHAIN BROKE). IT ONLY HAS 78,399 KM AND IN THE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE THE TIMEING SHOULD BE REPLACED EVERY 160,000KM. *BF *NM
ENGINE STARTED MAKING RATTLING NOISE WHILE DRIVING, PULLED OFF ROAD AND SHUT OFF ENGINE. I TRIED TO RESTART AND IT WOULDN'T START AGAIN. I HAD IT TOWED TO MY MECHANIC AND WAS TOLD THE ENGINE FAILURE WAS DUE TO SLUDGE IN THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER, AND THAT THE ENGINE WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THIS ENGINE WAS WELL MAINTAINED AND HAD 68000 MILES. NO REPAIRS HAVE BEEN DONE ON IT DUE THE EXPENSE OF A NEW ENGINE.
MY WIFE HAD JUST ENTERED THE HIGHWAY WHEN THE ENGINE SUDDENLY STALLED AND OUR CAR HAD TO BE TOWED. THE NEXT DAY A MECHANIC TOLD US THAT THE ENGINE WAS SEIZED. THE CAR ONLY HAS 82,000 MILES ON IT.THE TOTAL COST OF THE REPAIRS WAS $6442.91, THE ENGINE ALONE COST $4300.00 FROM JASPER ENGINES, WHICH SAID THAT THEY HAVE CORRECTED THE DESIGN FLAWS WITHIN THE ENGINE. IF A POPULAR AND REPUTABLE ENGINE REBUILDER CAN FIND AND FIX THE PROBLEM THAN WHY CAN'T CHRYSLER.
OIL LIGHT FLICKERED A COUPLE OF TIME AT AN IDLE. CALLED SERVICE AT DEALERSHIP AND TOOK IT IN FOR POSSIBLE OIL SENSOR REPLACEMENT. FOUND OUT ENGINE WAS DAMAGED AND NEEDS REPLACING. WAS OFFERED 2 ENGINES ONE AT 60,000 MI THE OTHER AT 100,00 MI. REFUESED BOTH FOR FEAR OF THOSE GOING TO. WARRANTY OUT OF DATE AT 100,00 MILES. VEHICLE NOW 114,00 MI AND IS A 1999. OIL WAS ALWAYS CHANGED EVERY 4500 MILES AND MOBILE 1 SYNTHETIC WAS USED. NO WARNING OF SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT EVER COMING ON. OIL WAS ALWAYS UP TO FULL LINE ON DIPSTICK. I FEEL CHRYSLER SHOULD HELP ME WITH THE PROBLEM BY HELPING ME PURCHASE A NEW ENGINE OR APPLYING A DEAL FOR ANOTHER CAR. WE PURCHASED THE INTREPID WITH THE 2.7L ENGINE WITH 29,000 MILES ON IT FOR APPROXIMATELY $13,000. MARCH 18, 2004, WITH 82,000 MILES ON IT, THE ENGINE FAILED. WE PURCHASED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY TO COVER THESE EVENTS, BUT IT EXPIRED AT 75,000 MILES. *JB FOR THE PAST YEAR, WE HAVE BEEN MAKING PAYMENTS AND PAYING FULL COVERAGE INSURANCE FOR THIS VEHICLE AS IT SITS BEHIND OUR HOUSE, NOT BEING DRIVEN. CAR STARTED SHAKING, I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH MY TIRES, SO I BOUGHT A NEW TIRE. SHAKING CONTINUED, UNTIL THE DAY I TOOK THE CAR IN WHERE I BOUGHT IT AND I DIDN'T SEE IT AGAIN FOR 6 MONTHS. I WAS TOLD BY THE USED CAR DEALERSHIP THAT THERE WAS METAL SHAVINGS IN MY OIL AND THAT I WOULD NEED A NEW ENGINE. AFTER MANY ATTEMPTS TO GET A LOW PRICED ENGINE, NUMEROUS (AND FAILED) ATTEMPTS AT A LOAN TO PAY FOR IT, ONE WAS FOUND BY THE USED CAR DEALERSHIP FROM WHERE THE CAR WAS PURCHASED. THEY QUOTED A PRICE OF $3500 BUT WHEN WE WENT IN TO PAY THE PRICE HAD GONE UP TO $4200. THE SALESMAN SAID THAT HE MUST HAVE TOLD US THE WRONG PRICE. ANYWAY, THE CAR WAS REPAIRED AND BACK IN THE LAND OF THE DRIVING IN MARCH '05....
NORMAL DRIVING WITH REGULAR MAINTENENCE LED UP TO THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE RESULTED IN ENGING REPLACEMENT TO THE TUNE OF $4,000.*AK

(2) IT HAS A BLACK OILY SLUDGE ON THE ENGINE BLOCK, THE OIL PUMP IS DAMAGED AND THE VALVES. (3) I'VE REPLACED THE OIL PUMP, WATER PUMP AND THE AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESOR. *AK

NO ONLY A SAFTEY HAZARD BUT IT IS VERY COSLTY TO REPAIR.THE DEALERSHIP WANTS 6500 TO REPAIR IT AND THE CAR IS NOT EVEN WORTH THAT. SO WE ARE STILL PAYING ON A CAR THAT DOSEN'T RUN...BECAUSE THE ENGINE IS DEFECTIVE!*AK

PULLED ENGINE DOWN TO CHECK ENGINE KNOCKING NOISE. ENGINE HAD SPUN BEARING ON ROD BEARING. REPLACED COMPLETE ENGINE ASSEMBLY. *BF *NM
A WEEK AFTER HAVING THE CAM-SENSOR REPLACED THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON. WE PROCEEDED TO TAKE IT RIGHT BACK TO THE MECHANIC, WHO DISCOVERED THE "SLUDGED" ENGINE. WE HAD CHANGED THE OIL EVERY 3,000 MILES SINCE PURCHASING THE VEHICLE. THE ENGINE NOW MAKES A SOUND LIKE SOMEONE IS HITTING THE INSIDES WITH A HAMMER. IT IS NO LONGER DRIVABLE, AND WE HAVE BEEN TOLD THE ONLY OPTION IS TO REPLACE THE ENGINE. WE CANNOT AFFORD THE $7,000 TO MAKE THE REPLACEMENT. *JB

1999 DODGE INTREPID 2.7L ENGINE FAILED AT 75,100 MI. CAR ENGINE STARTED KNOCKING AND STALLING WHILE DRIVING TO WORK. DEALER SAID $5-7 THOUSAND TO FIX. I TOOK IT TO AN INDEPENDENT SERVICE FACILITY. THEY SAID THERE IS KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THIS ENGINE AND SLUDGE BUILDUP AND IT ALSO SOUNDED LIKE THE TIMING CHAIN. I'M STILL WAITING ON THEIR ESTIMATE TO FIX THIS AS THEY CAN'T GET TO IT FOR SEVERAL DAYS. IN THE MEANTIME I AM OUT OF A VEHICLE. I'VE SENT A CUSTOMER COMPLAINT TO CHRYSLER AND HAVE NOT RECEIVED A RESPONSE FROM THEM.
COMER WAS DRIVING 50 MPH AND HEARD A CLICKING SOUND, AND THE MOTOR STALLED, VEHICLE LOST POWER STEERING, AND ALL THE LIGHTS IN THE DASHBOARD JUST LIT UP. CONSUMER CALLED A TOW TRUCK AND HAD THE VEHICLE TAKEN TO A SERVICE CENTER. MECHANIC INDICATED THAT THE ENGINE LOCKED UP. THERE WAS PLENTY OF OIL IN THE ENGINE. CONSUMER WAS TOLD THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *AK THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON (SES) LIGHT DID NOT ILLUMINATE TO WARN THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE ENGINE. *TT
WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 45-50 MPH, SUDDENLY THERE WAS A CLICKING/TAPPING NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE, FOLLOWED BY THE VEHICLE STARTING TO LOSE POWER. THE CONSUMER IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP. THE ENGINE BLEW BECAUSE IT THREW A ROD BEARING. *JB
1.) THERE WERE NO REAL "EVENTS" THAT HAPPENED. THE ENGINE ON MY WIFE'S DODGE INTREPID SIMPLY SEIZED (AFTER AN OIL CHANGE). 2.) ENGINE SEIZURE ON A DODGE INTREPID...MOTOR LOCKED UP. 3.) CHRYSLER BLAMED IT ON US NOT CHANGING THE OIL REGULARLY AND WE HAD TO ROLL THE BALANCE OF THE CAR INTO A NEW CAR. *JB
WHILE DRIVING TO THE HOSPITAL THE ENGINE (2.7)OF MY DODGE INTREPID SEIZED. THERE WAS NO WARNING SIGNS, THIS CAR WAS ALWAYS IN FOR OIL CHANGES. THE ENGINE IN MY CAR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. CYLINDER 3 AND 6 HAVE RODS THAT WILL EVENTUALLY GO THROUGH THE ENGINE. IT IS A 2.7 LITER 6 CYLINDER DODGE INTREPID. I HAVE CONTACTED THE COMPANY AND THEY WILL NOT RESPOND TO MY INQUIRIES. I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH ON THIS ENGINE AND THERE SEEMS TO BE QUITE A FEW OWNERS WHO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. I TOOK IT TO FERRIS STATE UNIVERSITY'S AUTOMOTIVE PROGRAM AND THE INSTRUCTOR TOLD US THAT THOSE ENGINES ARE NOTORIOUS FOR DOING THAT. HE EXPLAINED THAT IT IS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT BECAUSE THE HOLE THAT ALLOWS THE OIL TO FLOW THROUGH TO THE CYLINDERS IS NOT LARGE ENOUGH SO THE ENGINE STARVES FOR OIL WHICH CAUSES ROD BEARINGS TO GO BAD. WHILE DRIVING AT 35-40 MPH ENGINE FAILED. THERE WAS NO WARNING. CONTACTED THE DEALER, BUT PROBLEM RECURRED. *AK *TC
THE ENGINE FAILED AT APPROXIMATELY 100,000 MILES ON MY 1999 DODGE INTREPID (2.7L) AND I HAD A COMPLETE OVERHAUL DONE AT A COST OF $4,300. I'VE SINCE FOUND OUT THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS ENGINE. NOW I EXPECT THAT MY ENGINE IS FAILING AGAIN AFTER BEING REPLACED ABOUT 14 MONTHS AND 13,000 MILES AGO.*AK
WAS STOPPING AT A RED LIGHT AND THE ENGINE SHUT OFF AFTER A BRIEF DAMAGING NOISE. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THE TIMING BELT BLEW AND DESTROYED THE ENGINE. VEHICLE WAS LEFT ON BUSY ROADWAY WITH OCCUPANTS INSIDE UNTIL A TOW TRUCK COULD ARRIVE. POLICE WERE CALLED TO AVOID A REAR END COLLISION. *AK EVERY MECHANIC I HAVE CALLED HAS RECOMMENDED REPLACING THE ENGINE. NO ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN. TOO EXPENSIVE.
CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER TO REPAIR TIMING BELT WHICH COST CONSUMER $800.00. A FEW WEEKS LATER THE OIL PUMP AND ENGINE FAILED CAUSING THE VEHICLE NOT TO START. *AK
WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONSUMER TRIED TO RESTART THE VEHICLE BUT WAS NOT ABLE TO DO SO. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONSUMER THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER DETAILS. *JB

OOIL PRESSURE LIGHT COMES ON WHEN STOPPING AND CAR AT IDLE. IT GOES OUT WHEN ACELL ERATING. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR THREE MONTHS. HAVE NOTICED SLUDGE BUILDUP INSIDE OIL FILLER CAP AND OIL JUST SEEMS TO DISAPPEAR AT TIMES. *AK
ENGINE STARTED "KNOCKING" AT 45,000 MILES. ALWAYS HAD OIL CHANGES IN TIMELY FASHIO (3,000 MILES/3 MONTHS). COST $3,200 TO REPAIR ENGINE.*AK
