DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS THE ENGINE MADE A KNOCKING NOISE. THE VEHICLE WAS REGULARLY MAINTAINED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP FOR INSPECTION. THE MECHANIC DETERMINED THERE WAS OIL SLUDGE IN THE ENGINE AND THE ENGINE NEEDED REPLACED. NEITHER THE MANUFACTURER NOR DEALER HAVE BEEN ALERTED. NO REPAIRS HAVE BEEN MADE.

CAR 99 INTREPID WITH 2.7 ENGINE BEGAN MAKING A RATTLING NOISE AND OIL PRESSURE DROPPED. CAR WAS PULLED OVER AND A TOW TRUCK WAS CALLED. THE FAILURE IS DESCRIBED AS MAIN BEARINGS BREAKING UP AND DAMAGING ENGINE. CAR HAD JUST BEEN TO DODGE DEALERSHIP WITHIN THE MONTH HAD OIL CHANGE AND PAN WAS REPLACED DUE TO WEAR FROM PREVIOUS OIL CHANGES. WAS SUFFICIENT OIL IN CAR AND THE PROBLEM WAS EXPLAINED TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE INTREPID 2.7 ENGINE. THE ONLY FIX IS TO REPLACE ENTIRE ENGINE. IT HAS BEEN EXPLAINED TO ME BY NUMEROUS AUTO PLACES THAT THIS HAPPENS SO FREQUENTLY IN INTERPIDS THAT THERE IS SURPRISE IT HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS INADEQUATE TRANSFER OF OIL AROUND ENGINE DUE TO POOR DESIGN, WHICH EXPLAINS HOW EVEN CARS THAT HAVE PLENTY OF OIL AND HAVE BEEN PROPERLY MAINTAINED SUFFER FROM A CATASTROPHIC...
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THERE ARE SEVERAL PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE. THE FIRST PROBLEM IS AN INTERMITTENT FAILURE OF THE INTERIOR LIGHTS. THE DEALER REPLACED A COMPUTER CHIP AND THIS REMEDIED THE PROBLEM FOR A SHORT TIME. THE VEHICLE OCCASIONALLY FAILED TO START. THE BATTERY WAS REPLACED AND APPEARED TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER, THERE WERE RUST AND WHITE SPOTS IN THE DRIVEWAY UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE WHERE THE BATTERY IS LOCATED. SHORTLY AFTER CHRISTMAS ALL THE INTERIOR LIGHTS DIMMED AND THE VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER WHILE DRIVING 45MPH AT NIGHT, BUT NORMAL OPERATION RESUMED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED AFTER SEVERAL HOURS. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN SEEN BY THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES, BUT THE DEALER HAS NEVER BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN IDENTIFYING THE UNDERLYING ELECTRICAL PROBLEM. LASTLY, THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE AT THE LOCAL DEALER. DURING THE OIL CHANGE THE OIL PLUG WAS DAMAGED CAUSING...

I HAVE A 1999 DODGE INTREPID WITH THE 2.7 LITER ENGINE. ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, MY CAR STARTED CHUGGING AND THEN LOCKED UP. I WAS ABLE TO AT LEAST GET IT ON TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITHOUT CAUSING ANY ACCIDENTS. I WAITED A FEW MINUTES AND IT STARTED AND THEN ABOUT 1/2 WAY DOWN THE ROAD IT DID IT AGAIN. I HAD MY CAR LOOKED AT AND THEY SAID I WAS IN NEED OF A NEW ENGINE. *JB

THE ENGINE FAILED WITH NO PRIOR WARNING AND IT WAS DUE TO SLUDGE BUILD UP. *AK
WAS DRIVING 1999 CHRYSLER INTREPID WITH 2.7 V6 ENGINE, BEGAN HEARING LOUD CLICKING NOISE. STOPPED AT RED LIGHT, WHEN LIGHT TURNED GREEN CAR SHUT OFF AND WOULD NOT RESTART. HAD IT TOWED TO MECHANIC, AND WAS INFORMED THAT ENGINE SEIZED DUE TO EXCESSIVE OIL SLUDGE, METAL SHAVINGS,AND TIMING CHAIN. ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR ENGINE FAILURE. ESTIMATED COST OF REPAIR $5,000. STILL OWE A YEAR OF PAYMENTS ON CAR. HASN'T BEEN OPERATING SINCE AUGUST 2005. CAN'T AFFORD REPAIR. IN 2002 MY 1999 DODGE INTREPID DIED ON I-80 IN SACRAMENTO CALIFORNIA WITHOUT ANY WARNING, I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY GET IT OFF THE FREEWAY. THE VEHICLE STARTED AGAIN AFTER MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS. I TOOK IT DIRECTLY TO THE DODGE DEALERSHIP WHERE I HAD PURCHASED IT. THEY REPLACED THE ENGINE. IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY AT THAT TIME. IN JANUARY OF 2004 THE SAME PROBLEM HAPPENED AGAIN. EXCEPT THIS TIME MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE WITH MY 3 CHILDREN IN IT. SHE WAS DRIVING SOUTH ON 395 IN RENO, NEVADA. SHE WAS LUCKILY ABLE TO SAFELY COAST IT OFF THE FREEWAY. I CONTACTED DODGE ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND THEY WOULDN'T GIVE ME ANY HELP WHAT SO EVER. THE SECOND ENGINE HAS ABOUT 32000 MILES ON IT. *AK

WE HAVE A 1999 DODGE INTREPID THAT BEGAN TO HAVE EXHAUST SMOKE. THE MECHANIC SUGGESTED CHANGING OIL TO HAVOLINE 10W-40 MAX. WE DID SO. THE CAR CONTINUED TO HAVE A SMOKING EXHAUST. WE HAVE REGULARLY CHANGED THE OIL BEFORE THE 3 THOUSAND MILE MARK. WE HAD ABOUT ONE THOUSAND MILES FROM THE LAST OIL CHANGE. WE HAVE USED REGULAR OIL CHANGES AND SYNTHETIC OIL CHANGES IN THE PAST. APPROXIMATELY 130 MILES INTO A TRIP WITH THE CAR SET IN CRUISE CONTROL BETWEEN 65 AND 70 MPH, THE ENGINE FAILED. GOING UP A SLIGHT INCLINE, SUDDENLY, THE VEHICLE RPM'S SHOOT UP TO ABOUT 6 THOUSAND, THE CAR LOST POWER AND COULD NOT BE RESTARTED. THE INCIDENT WAS ON A RATHER BUSY HIGHWAY AT THE TIME. AT 1145 AM, 29 NOVEMBER 2005, I WAS DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 675 AT ABOUT @ 65 MPH, WHEN THE ENGINE SUDDENLY, WITHOUT ANY PRIOR WARNING, JUST QUIT. MY NAME IS [XXX] AND I OWN A 1999 DODGE INTREPID. I AM THE SECOND OWNER OF THE CAR PURCHASED WITH 22,000 MILES ON IT. I KEPT UP WITH MAINTENANCE THROUGH THE ROUTE 4 CHRYSLER/ DODGE DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR (WHICH HAS A PENDING CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST THEM). THE OIL LIGHT BEGAN TO BLINK SO I HAD IT DIAGNOSED AT A DODGE DEALER NEAR PISCATAWAY NEW JERSEY. I WAS TOLD THAT THE CAR WAS LEAKING OIL IN THE ENGINE. I ADVISED THEM THAT I HAVE SPECIFIC PARKING SPACES AT HOME AND WORK AND NEVER HAVE I HAD ANY OIL SPOTS UNDER THE CAR. THREE WEEKS AGO, THE CAR UNEXPECTEDLY STOPPED RUNNING WHEN I SLOWED DOWN FOR A RED LIGHT. WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, I STARTED THE CAR AND PROCEEDED TO TURN RIGHT AND THE CAR DIED AS I WAS TRYING TO TURN. I HAD IT TOWED...
I HAD ONLY OWNED THE CAR FOR A WEEK, AND THERE WAS AN AWFUL TICKING NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE, AS WELL AS EXCESSIVE BURNING OF OIL FROM MY TAIL PIPE. I HAVE TO PUT ABOUT A QUART AND A HALF INTO THE ENGINE EVERY OTHER DAY. I WAS DRIVING MY CAR ON A BUSY INTERSTATE AND MY CAR STARTED MAKING THIS AWFUL LOUD TICKING NOISE, THE OIL LIGHT FLUTTERED, AND THE ENGINE STOPPED. THE CAR HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED BECAUSE, LIKE MANY PEOPLE, I CANNOT AFFORD A REPAIR COSTING BETWEEN 2,500 AND 4,000 DOLLARS TO FIX. I HAD MY OIL CHANGED AND HAD A DIAGNOSTIC RUN AND WAS TOLD I HAD TO BRING IT TO A DODGE DEALER IF THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. ON FRIDAY SEPT 16TH I BROUGHT MY CAR TO A LOCAL DEALER. I WAS TOLD THAT IF I NEEDED TO HAVE THE CAM AND CRANKSHAFT SENSOR REPLACED OR THE CAR WOULD MOST LIKELY LEAVE ME ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. SO AFTER PAYING $400 DOLLARS FOR MY TWO SENSORS I DROVE AWAY HAPPILY THINKING EVERYTHING WAS OK. SO, ON MONDAY SEPT 19, 2005 I RETRIEVED MY 99 DODGE INTREPID FROM THE LOCAL DEALER. ON WEDNESDAY SEPT 21 2005, YES TWO DAYS LATER, I WAS ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH A DEAD CAR. ON A BUSY HIGHWAY...

I HAD A 99 DODGE INTREPID. MY CAR WAS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE OIL AND WE BELIEVED THERE TO BE A LEAK BECAUSE IT WOULD NEVER HOLD OIL VERY LONG BEFORE THE TANK WOULD BE BONE DRY. BUT EVEN AFTER TAKING IT TO A MECHANIC WE COULD NOT FIND A LEAK. IN MARCH WAS DRIVING BACK INTO TOWN WHEN MY CAR BROKE DOWN. IT STARTED MAKING A REALLY LOUD CLUNKING NOISE LIKE THE ENGINE WAS ABOUT TO FALL OUT. AFTER HAVING IT TOWED HOME A MECHANIC LOOKED AT IT AND SAID THAT THE ENGINE HAD GONE OUT AND I NEEDED A NEW ONE. I ENDED UP HAVING TO FILE BANKRUPTCY DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE CAR WAS ONLY WORTH $3000 OR SO AND IT WOULD HAVE COST MORE THAN THAT TO FIX IT AND THAT I WAS ALREADY $4000 UPSIDE DOWN. HOWEVER, I AM ABOUT TO BE SUED BY...
THE ENGINE IN MY 1999 DODGE INTREPID FAILED IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC WITH NO WARNINGS WHATSOEVER. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT IT NOT A DEFAULT, BUT IT WAS THE FACT THAT THE OIL NEEDS TO BE CHANGED EVERY 3000 MILES ON POINT AND USE 5W 30 OIL. IF THIS IS TRUE, WHY WAS THIS INFORMATION NOT INCLUDED IN THE MANUAL OR EVEN RELAYED TO US BEFORE WE BOUGHT THE CAR. IF YOU KNOW THAT OIL HAS TO BE CHANGED EVERY 3000 MILES EXACTLY, SHOULDN'T THERE BE A SENSOR THAT LETS YOU KNOW THAT. WHO WOULD BUY A CAR IF THEY WERE TOLD THAT YOUR ENGINE WOULD MALFUNCTION IF YOU GO OVER 3000 MILES WITHOUT AN OIL CHANGE . IN MY OPINION , THIS IS A DEFECT. *JB

DT: WHILE DRIVING THE ENGINE BLEW OUT. THE CONSUMER WAS DRIVING 40 KM WHEN THIS HAPPENED. THE CONSUMER SAID THAT T5 MINUTES BEFORE THIS HAPPENED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE MECHANIC TOLD THE CONSUMER THAT THE TIMING CHAIN SLIPPED DUE TO SLUDGE BUILD UP WHICH CAUSED IT TO HIT A ROD. PREVIOUSLY, A KNOCKING NOISE COME FROM THE ENGINE AREA. THE CONSUMER HAD TAKEN VEHICLE TO THE DEALER TO HAVE AN OIL CHANGE AND THE NOISE WAS NOT AS LOUD. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THERE HAD BEEN NO PREVIOUS PROBLEMS WITH THE ENGINE. NO FIRE CAME FROM THE ENGINE, BUT THERE WAS SMOKE. *AK
1999 DODGE INTREPID WATER PUMP AND TIMING CHAIN FAILED. *MR THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START WHILE AT THE GAS STATION. THE VEHICLE NEVER RAN HOT OR MADE LOUD NOISES AND THERE WERE NO INDICATIONS OF A PROBLEM. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED PER SERVICE DEALER THAT THE ENGINES HAD SERIOUS PROBLEMS. THE CONSUMER FELT THAT MAYBE IN WAS NOT NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE ENGINE AT 59,500 MILES. CHRYSLER WAS NOT WILLING TO REFUND THE CONSUMER SOME OR ALL OF THE MONIES SPENT ON REPAIRS. *SC THE A/C EVAORATOR COIL, FAN RESISTOR AND TRUNK LOCK MASTER CYLINDER WHICH WERE ALL IN PERFECT WORKING ORDER PROR TO BEING SERVICED AT THE DEALERSHIP FAILED TO WORK PROPERLY AFTER VEHICLE WAS PICK UP FROM SERVICE. DEALERSHIP CLAIMED PROBLEMS WERE UNRELATED. *TT
1999 DODGE INTREPEID--2.7L ENGINE I WAS DRIVING TO WORK GOING 70 MILES AN HOUR WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR JERKED AND THEN THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND I COASTED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. ONCE OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, I TRIED TO RESTART CAR AND IT WAS COMPLETELY DEAD. UPON HAVING MY CAR TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP I WAS TOLD THE TIMING CHAIN HAD BROKE AND THEY WERE PRETTY SURE THAT IT HAD DONE EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE, WHICH IF I WANTED TO GET IT FIX WOULD COST ME WELL OVER $5,000.00. I'VE ALSO HEARD THEY HAVE THE WORST A/C IN THE INDUSTRY IN THEIR VEHICLES WHICH MY EVAPORATOR CONDENSOR WENT OUT AND I HAD JUST PAID $1,200.00 TO GET FIXED.

MY 99 INTREPED THE COOLING FAN AND AIR CONDITIONER IS NOT WORKING, THIS IS AFTER THE 2.7 MOTER DIED AND WAS REPLACED

THE CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD HER THAT THE ENGINE HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE CONSUMER HAS NOT HAD THE PROBLEM FIXED. *AK

PLUS THE 75 DOLLARS TO CHECK THE CAR. THE CAR STILL SITS OUTSIDE THE SERVICE CENTER AT THE DEALERSHIP. ALL OIL CHANGES WERE DONE ON TIME AS REQUIRED. WE HAVE TO USE ONE CAR FOR SHUTTLING THE KIDS TO DAYCARE AND FOR TWO DIFFERENT SHIFTS OF WORK BETWEEN ME AND MY WIFE. *JB

I DO HAVE DOCUMENTATION STATING THAT THIS IS WHAT THEY FOUND AT DEALERSHIP. DEALERSHIP SAID CAR WOULD NOT LAST FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS AND THAT I SHOULD GET RID OF IT OR LET THEM FIX IT.
