DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING ON THE TOLL WAY AT 55-60 MPH THE VEHICLE STARTED SMOKING. THE ENGINE SUDDENLY STOPPED WITHOUT WARNING. A PUDDLE OF OIL WAS NOTICED ON THE PAVEMENT. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THERE WAS A CRACK IN THE OIL PAN. AFTER REMOVING THE OIL PAN THE MECHANIC OBSERVED A ROD HAD BECOME DETACHED AND SMASHED THE INTERNAL PARTS OF THE ENGINE CAUSING A CRACK IN THE OIL PAN. THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED.

ON AUGUST 18, 2006 I WAS DRIVING MY 1999 DODGE INTREPID WITH THE 2.7 ENGINE AND IT MADE A KNOCKING SOUND UNDER THE HOOD AND THEN THE ENGINE CUT OUT. MY HUSBAND TOWED IT HOME AND REPLACED SENSORS, PLUGS, AIR FILTER, AND OTHER THINGS. THE CAR STILL WULDN'T START. TALKING TO A FRIEND WHO IS A MECHANIC HE INFORMED US THAT MORE THAN LIKELY OUR ENGINE WAS BLOWN. HE SAID IT IS QUITE COMMON IN THE 1999 INTREPID'S WITH THE 2.7 ENGINES. HE SAID CHRYSLER KNOWS THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM BUT CHOOSES TO DO NOTHING ABOUT IT.
