1999 DODGE INTREPID 2.7 L TOTAL ENGINE FAILURE. THE ENGINE STARTED CLICKING THEN LOSS POWER AND SEIZED WHILE ON A HIGHWAY. DEALER SAID THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, EVEN THOUGH ENGINE WAS CLEAN. CHRYSLER DENIED CLAIM. KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE 2.7 LITER ENGINES. *JB
I HAVE A 1999 DODGE INTREPID, 2.7 LITER ENGINE, 65000 MILES ON VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN PROPERLY MAINTAINED. TIMING BELT BROKE ON VEHICLE AND IT WAS TOWED TO A CHRYSLER/DODGE DEALER FOR REPAIRS. MECHANIC BEGAN TO DISASSEMBLE MOTOR AND FOUND A BLACK SLUDGE INSIDE ENGINE - SAID IT LOOKED AS IF THE MOTOR OIL HAD NEVER BEEN CHANGED. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN PROPERLY MAINTAINED. I WAS THEN INFORMED THE MOTOR WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. I HAVE CONTACTED SEVERAL MECHANICS FOR REPAIR ESTIMATES - WHICH RANGE FROM $4500.00-$7000.00. ONE PERSON I SPOKE WITH SAID THAT A "JASPER" REPLACEMENT MOTOR WAS AVAILABLE THAT HAS FIXED THE DESIGN PROBLEM WITH THE OIL. I AM TRYING TO FIND INFORMATION REGARDING THIS MOTOR. FROM THE WEBSITE I WAS REVIEWING, INTREPID.CLAN-510.ORG THIS SLUDGE IS A PROBLEM NOT TYPICALLY ENCOUNTERED, BUT IT SEEMS TO BE MORE COMMON WITH THE INTREPID. ANOTHER MOTOR REPLACEMENT BUSINESS, I...
THE ENGINE BLEW SUDDENLY AND WITH NO APPARENT CAUSE. *NLM
COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE AT 75000 MILES, OIL LIGHT BEGAN TO FLASH ON AND OFF ENGINE STARTED TO KNOCK LOUDLY VEHICLE LOST ALL SPEED AND STALLED ON EXPRESSWAY ENTRANCE RAMP. THIS VEHICLE'S OIL AND FILTER WAS CHANGED EVERY 3000 MILES YET WHEN THE ENGINE WAS DISASSEMBLED THERE WAS LARGE AMOUNTS OF SLUDGE THROUGH OUT THE IT'S INSIDE ,AND I WAS TOLD THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REBUILT BUT THIS IS A VERY EXPENSIVE THING TO DO WHICH THE DEALER TOLD ME WOULD COST ABOUT $4000.00 THIS WAS THE CHEAPEST FIX. WHICH I DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO REPAIR RIGHT NOW SO NOW I AM PAY FOR A CAR I CAN NOT DRIVE. AND FROM ALL THE INFORMATION THAT I HAVE READ THERE SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH A GREAT MANY OF THE 2.7 LITER V6 ENGINES INSTALLED IN THIS VEHICLE. THE REPAIRS ARE VERY COSTLY AND TIME CONSUMING. *NLM
PREMATURE ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO SLUDGE BUILD UP ON A 1999 DODGE INTREPID WITH 72000 MI. ENGINE OIL WAS CHANGED EVERY 3000 MI OR LESS. CAR IS NOT CURRENTLY UNDER WARRANTY AND DODGE SAYS IT WILL COST APPROXIMATELY. $3500 TO $6500 TO FIX DEPENDING ON WHAT IS BROKEN. *JB

ENGINE BLEW FOR "NO APPARENT REASON". WARRANTY WILL NOT COVER A REPLACEMENT DUE TO THE MYSTERIOUS APPEARANCE OF SLUDGE. I HAD MY OIL CHANGED REGULARLY AND MAINTAINED MY VEHICLE PROPERLY. I HAVE ALREADY REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION, VARIOUS SENSORS AND VISITED THE DEALER 3 TIMES TO CORRECT AN OIL LEAK. I WAS NEVER DIAGNOSED WITH AN ENGINE PROBLEM UNTIL IT FINALLY SHUT DOWN. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY, THE ENGINE STARTED TO MAKE A LOUD NOISE AND RATTLED CONTINUOUSLY. THIS WAS VERY SURPRISING, CONSIDERING THE VEHICLE WAS NORMALLY A QUIET RIDE. THE SHOP TOLD ME MY ENGINE WAS BLOWN AND THE WARRANTY COMPANY DENIED MY CLAIM. I AM STILL FINANCING THIS VEHICLE AND DO NOT HAVE THE 6,500.00 TO REPLACE THIS ENGINE. I SEE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON THIS SITE AND OTHERS ABOUT THE 2.7 LITER ENGINES. THERE SHOULD DEFINITELY BE A RECALL. *JB
I WAS THE OWNER OF A 1999 DODGE INTREPID, THAT WAS COMPLETELY WRECKED AT 36,000 MILES AFTER EXPERIENCING SUDDEN LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL PRIOR TO THE WRECK, MY DEALER ASSURED ME OVER AND OVER THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE ALTHOUGH I WAS VERY CONCERNED AND PRETENDED TO KNOW NOTHING ABOUT STEERING PROBLEMS WITH THESE VEHICLES. PRIOR TO THE TOTAL VEHICLE LOSS, THE ENGINE BLEW UP WITH A ROD KNOCK AT ABOUT 33,000 MILES AND HAD TO BE REPLACED, THE TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE OVERHAULED AFTER IT FAILED, THE INPUT AND OUTPUT SPEED SENSORS BOTH FAILED AND MUCH MORE. THIS IS JUST 1 OF 2 DEFECTIVE DAIMLER CHRYSLER VEHICLES I HAVE OWNED AND DAIMLER CHRYSLER ACCEPTS NO RESPONSIBILITY. MANY OF THESE VEHICLES ARE DEFECTIVE AND DO NOT HOLD UP REASONABLY. I HAVE HAD TROUBLE WITH MY CAR HEATER IS NOT OPERATING PROPERLY SERIOUS DAMAGE MAY HAVE ALREADY OCCURRED TO MY ENGINE. THE PRIMARY SYMPTOM IS THAT THE CAR HEATER, FOR NO REASON, DOES NOT BLOW HOT AIR - THEN IT STARTS WORKING. LOOKS LIKE MY CAR ENGINE HAS BEEN OVERHEATING AND CAUSING SLUDGE TO BUILD UP IN THE TOP HALF OF THE ENGINE. SOME OTHER SYMPTOMS ARE CAR STARTS TO BURN OIL, VERY LIGHT TRACES OF WHITE SMOKE FROM EXHAUST AND THE ENGINE MAY SEEM TO RUN A LITTLE ROUGH AT IDLE. STILL RUNNING BUT I DON'T KNOW FOR HOW LONG.... *NLM
1999 DODGE INTREPID 2.7 ENGINE BLEW AT 55K.*JB
I OWN A 1999 DODGE INTREPID WITH 26,400 MILES ON IT. IT HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT OF ANY TYPE AND USUALLY DRIVEN 10 MILES PER DAY. AFTER 26,000 MILES THE ENGINE DEVELOPED A KNOCKING NOISE. I WAS INFORMED THE ROLLER BEARING ON THE TIMING CHANGE HAD FAILED. AFTER PAYING MORE THAN $1,400 FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ROLLER BEARING AND A NEW TIMING CHAIN, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE TIMING CHAIN PROBLEM HAD DAMAGED ONE OR MORE OF THE VALVES, WHICH REQUIRED THE ENGINE TO BE TORN DOWN AND A VALVE JOB TO BE REQUIRED FOR AN ADDITIONAL COST OF $900.00. ALL OF THIS TO A CAR WITH ONLY 26,000 MILES. 2 WEEKS AFTER THE ENGINE REPAIRS WERE MADE THE TRANSMISSION STOPPED SHIFTING GEARS.*JB
AT AROUND 55,000 MILES, A KNOCKING SOUND DEVELOPED. ENGINE PERFORMANCE WAS NOT EFFECTED UNTIL AROUND 65,000 MILES, WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STARTED COMING ON INTERMITTENTLY AND THE ENGINE WOULD DIE. I TOOK IT TO A KNOWLEDGEABLE AND HONEST MECHANIC WHO THROUGH THE COURSE OF TROUBLE SHOOTING THE NOISE DISCOVERED THE TIMING BELT WAS LOOSE AND HAD DAMAGED MANY INTERNAL ENGINE PARTS. HE SAYS THE CHAIN IS PULLING DOUBLE DUTY, WITH A GEAR ON THE INSIDE AS WELL AS THE OUTSIDE OF THE CHAIN. THE INCREASED WEAR CAUSED IT TO STRETCH AND IT BEGAN SLAPPING/RUBBING AND DAMAGING OTHER PARTS. NAMELY VARIOUS SPOTS ON THE CASE AND THE WATER PUMP, WHICH WAS WORN NEARLY ALL THE WAY THROUGH AND SEEPING WATER AND COOLANT INTO THE ENGINE. HE SAYS THIS IS A SERIOUS DESIGN FLAW AND THAT HE HAS HEARD A LOT OF OTHER INTREPID'S ARE REQUIRING NEW ENGINES FOR THIS SAME...
THE TIMING CHAIN ON MY 1999 DODGE INTREPID WENT OUT AND I ONLY HAD 76,000 MILES ON THE CAR. THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM FOR OTHER PEOPLE ALSO, AS I HAVE BEEN PUT ON A WAITING LIST FOR ONE OF THE PARTS NEEDED (TENSIONER). THERE ARE 1400 OF THESE PARTS ON BACK ORDER NOW, 02-11-03. THIS INDICATES A MAJOR DEFECT IN THIS PART OF THE ENGINE AND A RECALL IS IN ORDER. *JB
THERE WAS A CLICKING NOISE COMING FROM THE VEHICLE, THE ENGINE STALLED, HOWEVER IT WAS RESTARTED.*JB
PURCHASED VEHICLE WITH APPROXIAMETELY 500 MILES. SINCE BUYING THE CAR WE HAVE HAD IT IN FOR REPAIRS AT THE DEALER 8 TIMES. ALL REPAIR ARE TO ENGINE AND CHIPS IN THE ENGINE. THE MOST RECENT, DRIVING DOWN THE EXPRESSWAY 60 MPH THE CAR SHUT OFF. PUT IN NEUTRAL AND STARTED THE CAR BACK UP. WHEN CAR STARTED BACK UP THERE WAS A LOUD TICKING NOISE IN THE FRONT. THEN THE CAR SHUT OFF 3 MORE TIME AND ON THE FOURTH STALL WOULD NOT START BACK UP. WHEN TOWED TO REPAIR SHOP HE INDICATED THE ENGINE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED (OIL JUST CHANGED AND FULL). WHEN CALLING AROND FOR NEW ENGINE ALL DEALERS INDICATED THOUGHS ENGINES ARE VERY HARD TO FIND BECAUSE EVERYONE IS LOOKING FOR THEM BECAUSE A BLOWN ENGINE IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH INTREPIDS.
