TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 DODGE DURANGO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, SMOKE WAS SEEN COMING FROM THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE AS THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE WATER PUMP AND THE RADIATOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED ON TWO OCCASIONS BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 150,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 162,000.
EVERY TIME I DRIVE IN THE RAIN THE ENGINE STALL AND MAKE A ABRUPT STOP. I HAVE NUMEROUS SERVICE DONE BY THE DODGE DEALER AND MANY AMOUNT OF MONEY SPENT ON TRYING TO CORRECT THIS MAJOR PROBLEM. IN GOOD WEATHER THE SUV DRIVE GREAT IT'S ONLY WHEN IT RAIN WHEN THIS HAPPENS. THIS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUR ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY AND CARS ARE DRIVING AT HIGH SPEED BEHIND YOU AND YOUR CAR STOP. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE ENGINE PRODUCED A LOUD THUD FOLLOWED BY A PRONOUCED TAPPING NOISE. WAS ABLE GUIDE THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO LOCAL GARAGE WHERE THE ENGINE WAS PROCLAIMED "DEAD" - APPEARS TO HAVE THROWN A ROD. VEHICLE WAS WELL CARED FOR WITH DEALER OIL CHANGES EVERY 3K MILES. 2004 DODGE DURANGO LIMITED, 5.7L HEMI, PURCHASED ON 5/15/13. EXTENDED WARRANTY PURCHASED WITH VEHICLE AT TIME OF SALE. VEHICLE HAS BEEN RETURNED FOR SERVICE FIVE TIMES TO DATE FOR SAME ROOT ISSUE. IN UNDER ONE YEAR, ONLY APPROXIMATELY 2600 MILES HAVE BEEN DRIVEN DUE TO LACK OF RELIABILITY AND SERVICE RELATED PROBLEMS. IN THIS CASE, THE ROOT PROBLEM IS KNOWN TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND IS NOT UNIQUE TO THIS SPECIFIC VEHICLE, BUT RATHER A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THIS YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL. CHRYSLER IS UNABLE TO PROVIDE DIRECTION OR ANY TECHNICAL SUPPORT TO ASSIST THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WITH SOLVING THE ISSUE. MOISTURE ENTERED INTO THE CYLINDERS VIA THAT AIR INTAKE MANIFOLD DUE TO A WATER SEAL DESIGN DEFECT IN THE AREA OF THE WINDSHIELD WIPER ARMS. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS PARKED, RAIN WATER COMING DOWN THE FRONT WINDSHIELD WILL FLOW DIRECTLY UNDER THE COWL AND ONTO THE ENGINE BLOCK. THIS WATER INTRUSION CAUSES UNDUE STRESS ON THE PISTONS, RODS, AND CRANKSHAFT EVENTUALLY CAUSING A ROD TO BREAK AND PUNCTURE THE ENGINE BLOCK. IF THIS HAPPENS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, THE RESULTS COULD BE DEADLY. THE OTHER KNOWN SCENARIO IS AFTER THE CAR IS PARKED FOR A PERIOD OF TIME (EXPOSED TO RAIN), THE CYLINDER WILL FILL WITH WATER, CAUSING A HYDRO-LOCK CONDITION AND THE VEHICLE WILL NOT START. I WAS PULLING AWAY FROM A STOP WHEN THE ENGINE SUDDENLY MADE SOME LOUD NOISES SOUNDING LIKE GRINDING AND THE VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER, STEERING AND BRAKES. ON APRIL 11, 2014, MY THREE YOUNG CHILDREN, BOYFRIEND, AND MYSELF(PREGNANT) STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT. AS THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN I BEGAN TO ACCELERATE; THAT'S WHEN I HEARD A LOUD POPPING SOUND. AFTER A RAIN STORM WHERE THE 04 DURANGO WAS PARKED SLIGHTLY DOWNHILL I ATTEMPTED TO START THE VEHICLE AND HEARD A HORRID SOUND AS IF METAL PARTS WERE FLYING AROUND IN THE ENGINE. LOOKED UNDER THE VEHICLE AND FOUND SMALL PIECES OF METAL ON THE GROUND. EVENTUALLY FOUND A HOLE IN THE BLOCK AND AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ONLINE I FOUND THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM. I CALLED CHRYSLER AND THEY WOULD NOT HELP AS THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY. *TT

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A REPAIR SHOP WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT A ROD HAD PENETRATED AND DAMAGED THE ENGINE, WHICH WOULD NEED REPLACING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. ON 2APRIL I WENT TO START THE DURANGO . DID NOT EVEN TURN AN IT STOPPED. I THOUGHT IT WAS A STARTER MOTOR. I WAS TOLD IT WAS NOT IT WAS IN THE ENGINE. THE ONLY ONE THAT WORK ON THIS VEHICLE WAS THE DODGE DEALERSHIP. AND I JUST HAD MY OIL CHANGE A MONTH BEFORE WITH THERE 23 POINT INSPECTION. SOMEONE NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THIS WATER PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE THAT'S WHY THESE MODELS ARE BLOWING ENGINES AT LOW MILES. THIS WOULD MAKE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COME ON. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO DEALERS IN BOTH KENTUCKY & NORTH CAROLINA AND TO VARIOUS AUTO PARTS STORES AS WELL AS INDEPENDENT MECHANICS. THE DIAGNOSTICS READER ALWAYS SHOWED MISFIRE IN #2 CYLINDER BUT NO ONE COULD TELL ME WHAT CAUSED IT. EVEN THOUGH I KEPT THE OIL CHANGED AS WELL AS OTHER MAINTENANCE IT STARTED KNOCKING AND BLEW AT 124,000 MILES. I CONTACTED DODGE AND THEY ASSURED ME THAT THEY KNEW OF NO PROBLEMS WITH THESE VEHICLES. I REPLACED THE ENGINE WITH ONE FROM A WRECKING YARD WITH 60,000 MILES. SAME PROBLEMS WITH RAIN AND CAR WASHES. IT LASTED 2 YEARS AND 21,000 MILES. I CONTACTED...
AFTER MAKING A CLICKING NOISE FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS THAT WE HAD BEEN TOLD WAS THE STARTER FAN (AND HAVING IT REPLACED), WE LOADED UP OUR DURANGO FOR A WEEK LONG CAMPING TRIP 8 HOURS AWAY. 45 MINUTES INTO THE DRIVE THE DURANGO STARTED "DRAGGING" LIKE IT WAS HAVING A DIFFICULT TIME MAINTAINING SPEED WITH CRUISE CONTROL. SHORTLY AFTERWARD, A HORRIBLE METAL ON METAL BANGING NOISE CAME FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND I LOST ALL POWER. ON THE INTERSTATE, AT 4 A.M. I DROPPED FROM 72 MPH TO 0 IN A MATTER OF SECONDS AND BARELY HAD ENOUGH MOMENTUM TO PULL THE TRUCK TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. OIL JUST POURED FROM UNDER THE TRUCK. UPON INSPECTION OF THE ENGINE, THE LOCAL SERVICE PERSON TOLD ME I HAD A GOOD CASE AGAINST DODGE SINCE THE ENGINE WAS IN GREAT CONDITION AND THE ROD SHOULD NOT HAVE BROKEN. THE REGIONAL DODGE INSPECTOR SHOW UP AND INSPECTED THE ENGINE AND DETERMINED THAT THE DAMAGE WAS DUE TO LACK OF MAINTENANCE. I ATTEMPTED TO TALK TO THE LOCAL SERVICE PERSON THAT I HAD SPOKE WITH BEFORE BUT THE DEALERSHIP MANAGER WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO. THE NATIONAL DODGE REPRESENTATIVE I WAS ASSIGNED CALLED ME AND TOLD ME THAT THE ENGINE FAILED DUE TO A WATER PUMP FAILURE. THE STORY CHANGED. IN EITHER CASE, I WAS LEFT WITH A LARGE BILL BECAUSE...

THEY FOUND THAT RAIN WATER WAS COMING THROUGH THE COWL BELOW THE WINDSHIELD ONTO THE ENGINE INTAKE MANIFOLD. WATER STANDING ON THE INTAKE MANIFOLD SEEPED INTO THE ENGINE AND ALLOWED CYLINDER TO HYDRAULICALLY LOCK. *TR
AFTER RETURNING FROM A WEEK LONG BUSINESS TRIP, I WENT TO MY DURANGO THAT WAS PARKED AT THE AIRPORT. THE BATTERY WAS DEAD FOR SOME REASON, AND USED A JUMP BOX TO START THE VEHICLE. IMMEDIATELY UPON STARTED, THE ENGINE STARTED TO MAKE A LONG RATTLING NOISE, THEN SHUT DOWN. UPON FURTHER REVIEW, I FOUND OIL LEAKING FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE, AND A PIECE OF METAL AS WELL. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 DODGE DURANGO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN STARTING THE VEHICLE, AN ABNORMAL SOUND CAME FROM THE ENGINE AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHERE A DIAGNOSTIC WAS PERFORMED, WHICH DETERMINED THAT THE CONNECTING ROD WAS DAMAGED. THE DEALER REPLACED THE CONNECTING ROD HOWEVER, THE REPAIR DID NOT REMEDY THE DEFECT AND THE FAILURE LATER RECURRED. THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND DISCOVERED A TWO-INCH HOLE IN THE ENGINE BLOCK. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE THE DEALER INDICATED THAT THE CONNECTING ROD WAS DAMAGED AND CAUSED THE TWO-INCH HOLE IN THE ENGINE BLOCK. THE DEALER REPLACED THE ENGINE AS A REPAIR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 72,000.
ENGINE FAILED SHORTLY (10 SECONDS) AFTER START-UP, MAKING A LOUD KNOCKING NOISE AND THEN SEIZING TIGHT. ENGINE COULD NOT BE RE-STARTED AS IT COULD NOT TURN-OVER. ENGINE WAS INSPECTED BEFORE REMOVAL, AND #7 PISTON WAS FOUND TO NOT BE MOVING WHEN THE CRANKSHAFT WAS ROTATED IN REVERSE ROTATION MANUALLY. ENGINE WAS REMOVED AND TORN DOWN FOR INSPECTION. CYLINDER #7 CONNECTING ROD WAS FOUND TO BE BROKEN MIDWAY THROUGH THE I-BEAM SECTION, AND THE REMAINING PARTS OF THE CONNECTING ROD SHOWED EVIDENCE OF BEING BENT OR BUCKED PREVIOUS TO THE FAILURE BY ONE OR MORE HYDROLOCK EVENTS. ROOT CAUSE WAS DETERMINED TO BE A DEFECTIVE DESIGN IN THE THROTTLE BODY TO INDUCTION RESONATOR JOINT THAT ALLOWS WINDSHIELD WATER RUNOFF TO BE DRAWN INTO THE ENGINES INDUCTION SYSTEM.
