The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the display screens became inoperable, causing the instrument cluster and gauges to become unavailable to the driver. In addition, the audible alarms were no longer audible. After turning the vehicle off and restarting the vehicle, the failure was self-corrected. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not yet notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 46,000.

Traveling from Mexico ,we just got into yuma Arizona heading towards the 8 freeway when my volt displayed reduced propulsion and the engine light came on and the car lost power while driving on the road we had to let the car drift into a parking lot. We let the cat sit for a several minutes and the engine started up but was running hard. After that it ran a little so we decided to rent a uhaul and car hauler to get the car home. Before this happened We were about to head back to California and we were stranded there until we got an Uber to the uhaul place and rented a truck and car hauler, the car would stay on long enough for us to drive it up on the ramp so we had to push the car to get it up there. We finally did and...

At approximately 61,500 miles my Chevy Volt would not start. I had it towed to a repair facility who determined the problem was a faulty BECM (Battery Energy Control Module), but that it would still be covered by the manufacturer's warranty. So I had the vehicle towed to a dealership. The vehicle has been at the dealership for six weeks as of the time I write this, but report they have yet to diagnose the problem or offer a solution. Doing research online I have found that BECM failure is a common problem among the Chevy Volt, of all model years. And due to "supply chain disruptions" people are having to wait weeks to months for their vehicle to be repaired. Fortunately my vehicle did not fail in a dangerous location, however the BECM failure could happen randomly at any time at any mileage and appears to be a design...

BECM failure caused vehicle to lose propulsion. Could have stopped working in a dangerous situation such as an intersection, steep hill, or railroad tracks.
#11480405 |
This is related to a long-standing issue with the failure of the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) (part #242969-00) for the 2017 Chevrolet Volt, as well as a lack of availability of the replacement part. This is a documented problem in the NTSA database since 2016. The vehicle error messages on the dashboard include “unable to charge”, “shift to park to start”, “reduced propulsion acceleration may be limited”. The internal combustion engine engages even with a full battery charge on an intermittent basis. Only after turning the car off and on several times or later the next day, would the problems resolve. In several instances, there was a lack of power transfer to the wheels when in drive mode and traveling on roadways, and the car had to be turned off and on to resolve this problem. The car has been inspected by a Chevrolet dealer to confirm the BECM...

When attempting to engage the vehicles drive system, it would occasionally fail to recognize the propulsion system battery. This could potentially leave someone stranded in dangerously high or low temperature environments without food or water. Powering off the vehicle and then powering the vehicle back on would sometimes fix the issue. The issue occurred very randomly and was unable to be reproduced once working again. It would continue to happen more frequently and require more tinkering to get it working until almost complete failure. This appears to be a common issue and found to be the result of a failed BECM (battery energy control module). It triggers the check engine light and a series of trouble codes. It is estimated that the replacement of this module takes roughly five hours. Unfortunately, supply chain issues have recently resulted in owners being without their vehicle for multiple months with no loaner vehicles...

Our VOLT yesterday had a complete Battery Electronic Control Module Failure. This is apparently a VERY common problem with 2017 models. The car is not drivable once this happens are parts are back ordered. I read 1 dealer had 4 just sitting there waiting for the part. Some people over the past year have been waiting up to 100 days for the part. Yesterday at Keys Chevrolet in Van Nuys, CA we were told it would take at least 1 month to get the part is. If the problem is this prolific GM needs to produce more parts or issue a recall for these cars. All these customers should not be without their car for months at a time because parts are not available.

My car had the Shift to Park and Battery Control Module go out while on a family trip with the family in the car, on the highway. The car was in the left lane of 2 lanes on the highway with no propulsion or way to move it except to push push the car off the side of the highway. Thankfully some people stopped to help. My car had stopped with no way of moving on a 55 mph 2 lane highway. We were at risk of cars not seeing my hazards and hitting us from behind. We had to push the car across the right lane to get it off the road. We had two cars stop to help direct traffic away from us while we pushed it to safety. But when we were on the side of the road, we were stranded in 100 degree heat along side...

On 2 difference occasions over the past 3 weeks, my car has malfunctioned while I was driving. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms prior to this. All of the lights on the dash came on, the power steering went out, the brakes would not work properly and I could not accelerate. I had my child in the car and we narrowly avoided being hit by other cars both times since I couldn't control the vehicle. I couldn't even power the car down initially but was finally able to turn it off and back on and function resumed after several cycles. I was driving on electric battery that time. The first time, the dealership stated that the following codes were present: P1e00 and P16BA. They replaced the g1 a/c compressor. The incident occurred again a week later when I was driving on gas. At that time, there were...

BECM shut car down and has gone into low propulsion mode causing danger in traffic.

I was driving 65 miles per hour on the freeway and suddenly my car lost propulsion. A light came on that said the car had lost propulsion and I had no power to keep driving on the freeway. Luckily, I was able to get to the side of the road without getting hit by other cars, but it was a close call and very scary. I had it towed to the dealership and they could not find any problem with it after investigating for an entire week. They gave it back without any repairs because it was apparently working fine for the dealership. This same problem happened again about 6 months later as I was driving up a long hill. Again, it was a scary close call to get to the side of the road safely. This time I just turned the car off and let it sit for awhile....

Shift to Park alert. Vehicle does not think it's in park when it is actually in park.
#11450803 |
Car couldn't be turned off. Dash would say "shift to park" when it was already in park. The problem was intermittent but the number of times needed to get the car to shut off was increasing. GM was aware of the problem but said it hadn't risen to Recall status. I saw over 500 of the same complaint online. They charged $800 to replace the switch and wiring. GM has stopped making Volts, so that could be why no recall???
#11450811 | Fire
Went into a store to pick up a snack and the cashier noticed that my driver side door was on fire. The entire indoor panel was melted and burned. It looked like the fire started on the inside of the door panel where the wiring is. The car was turned off at the time of fire

I am having a shift to park error message when I am in park
#11450500 |
The car suddenly started starting problem, then the electrical charging component to refuel the power from an electrical charging outlet was unable to charge. Now it does not start at all. I brought the 2017 Chevy Volt to a dealer, it has been more than a week and they said that the part to fix the problem is not available yet and I have to wait. They do not have any idea when they will get the part.

BECM (Battery Control Module part # (24296900)) on my 2017 Chevrolet Volt failed. When the failure occurred the instrument display showed a “Propulsion Reduced” warning. At the same time the engine started (the traction battery was fully charged at the time) and the check engine light came on. I subsequently received an email from General Motors that they had detected a lithium ion battery problem with the car and to have it serviced within 7 days. The GM dealer subsequently diagnosed the issue as a failure of the BECM module. Although an online search of this issue shows that there have been hundreds of failures of this module there are no replacement parts currently available. The car has been sitting at the dealer for several weeks with no estimate of when a replacement part will be available. The dealer has recommended not driving the car until it is repaired. I...

I received a 'Reduced Propulsion' message along with a check engine light and that progressed to a 'Engine not Detected" message and stranded along the interstate in a dangerous situation. Had it towed to a dealership which had a technician which could work on a volt - he replaced the Engine Control Module fuse which "fixed" the car for about 15 miles and then the 'Reduced Propulsion' error with the Check Engine light appeared. Technician said something must be shorting out the fuse. Dangerous situation.

Drive power reduced, Shift to Park, BECM faulty part 24296900 not covered by warranty. Car cannot be shut down
#11445109 |
Shift to park message and will not allow car to be turned off. This problem also occurred ~2 years ago and the part was replaced by Chevrolet under warranty. This seems to be a serial defect
#11444006 |
I bought the car in 2020. It had intermittent problems with the car registering “shift to park” when the car was in park. This would not allow the car to be started, leaving me stranded. The intermittent problem has become much more frequent now. Yesterday and today 16 Dec 2021, the car is not ever registering that the vehicle is in park. The transmission display shows I am in “P” (park), but the display keeps saying “shift to park” and the car won’t start.

The car doesn't shut off. I get an error: "shift to park". Started yesterday, 11/9/21. I have to jiggle the gear selector to get it to shut off. I'm sure that is going to stop working for me. I've seen that their have been various lawsuits regarding this issue. Not sure what my next step is.

I'm having a shift to park issue with this chevy volt, it won't register with the system I'm in park mode. I'm also having an adaptive cruise control issue as it's telling me adaptive cruise control is unavailable at this time. The adaptive cruise control is a hit or miss.
#11439735 |
shift-to-park problem. This is a noted problem with these Volt's. The Dealer is charging around $450 to fix this problem. With more than a couple of service bulletins on this, it is a troublesome issue.
#11438607 |
My Chevy Volt has the "Shift to Park" error. It intermittently will not turn off, which means you also cannot start it. This left me stranded at night in a county park, which closed before the tow truck could arrive. The car has 40,205 miles and the dealer says this problem is not under warranty because it is a "bumper to bumper" issue covered only under the 36,000 mile warranty. As categorized by NHTSA, this is an electrical and power train issue and is a glaring defect that is essential to the car even functioning and should not happen on a car with 40,000 miles.

When attempting to turn my car off, a message is displayed saying "SHIFT TO PARK". My car is already in park, and jiggling the gear shifter will generally get rid of the message. Sometimes this can take several minutes. It is not possible to turn my car off when this message is displayed, and the battery will die if the car is left with this message displayed. The car is available for inspection upon request. It is being repaired in the next few days though. The problem has been confirmed by a local mechanic. The problem has a class action lawsuit against GM for the issue: https://www.carcomplaints.com/news/2021/gm-shift-to-park-lawsuit-vehicles-cant-be-shut-off.shtml#:~:text=The%20car%20does%20not%20detect%20park%20mode%20and,and%20Maryland%20plaintiff%20Juanita%20Crawford%20%282017%20Chevrolet%20Malibu%29. The problem first appeared approximately 2 weeks ago without any prior notice or warnings, at 44,000 miles.

When the vehicle is placed in park and shut off, the alert on the dash states to put vehicle in park to turn off.
#11433174 |
Car started giving message “Place car in park”, even though car is in Park. Thus not allowing me to turn my car off. I have to move it from Park to Drive multiple times before it registers and I can turn my car off. This happens at least once a day, but seems to be getting worse and worse… looking online many others are having same issue across many Chevy models.
#11433137 |
I place the car in park and I receive a warning on dash that says “action required shift to park”. The car will not shut off. I have had to leave it running twice. I googled and others have had similar problem
#11432248 |
After putting the vehicle in park, a warning comes up that says “action shift to park” and the vehicle will not turn off or recognize that it is in park. Also the heater doesn’t work at all at times in the winter and only blows cold air, finally after driving for two weeks only once a message that said service heater came on but that was in the summer. The cruise control intermittently stops working. I have asked CarMax to service when it was under warranty and they couldn’t find anything wrong with it apparently. It has happened numerous times since and now it’s not under their warranty of course. I have photos of it happening and a video of the cruise control problem as well. These things have happened multiple times not just once so to put in a date of the incident I do not have enough dates...

When turning off vehicle the vehicle states to put shifter into park even though it's in park. Sometimes have to turn vehicle on and off multiple times and get ride of message. Other times just moving the shifter will cause it to go away.

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated while the vehicle was standstill when the battery charger plug caught fire. The contact was able to extinguish the fire with his fire extinguisher. The fire department nor the police department was not contacted. The contact stated no one was injured or seek medical attention. The contact stated the vehicle was still drivable but unable to charge to drive. The contact called the local dealer and was made aware the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 76,000.

Hello my car says shift to park from time to time an I can't move and whenever I turn with my electric mode sometimes it stutters and switches to gas.

Car exhibits "shift to park" message when attempting to turn off car. This issue is still occurring after the completion of the technical service bulletin and jumper wire installed. Bulletin No.: 19-NA-206

When the car is stationary and the gear shift is in "Park", dashboard provides constant warning that car needs to shift to park and won't shut off properly. It leads to difficulty in shutting and starting the vehicle.
#11425798 |
As do many other owners of Chevrolet Volts and Malibus, I have experienced the "Shift-to-Park" problem last year and again this year. The problem involves shifting to park and then shutting off the motor. The motor stops but the error message "Shift to Park to turn off engine" appears on the dashboard console. The engine has stopped, the car is in park, but the message continues. When I open the door, the beeping alert signal begins and continues. I had it repaired by the dealer last year and the 2017 Volt is back at the dealer's for the same problem again this year. There should be a recall for this widespread problem.

The car suffers from periodic electrical issues where it does not recognize the current status of the transmission and says "Shift to Park" even though vehicle is already parked. This culminates in a complete failure of the control module/battery/wiring harness systems and eventually the entire electrical system stops connecting to the engine. Our vehicle is now in the shop and

While driving on the interstate at 75 mph I had to accelerate briefly to allow another vehicle to merge safely onto the road. Immediately my dashboard gave me a warning message saying “reduced propulsion acceleration may be limited” and the engine warning light came on. The temperature of my coolant began to rise over 230 F & then 240. Miles from my destination, I reduced speed & took the next exit to stop for fuel and read my owners manual. I discovered that the same message could appear if the car was not put into “mountain mode” thereby failing to reserve a certain amount of energy in the battery. I had hoped we starting the engine & resetting the computer with the car in “Mountain mode” would resolve the matter, but that was not the case. I let the engine cool down for a bit & restarted my trip as...

Car would not turn off. Got the message "Shift to park" on driver display, but car was in park. Had to cycle the gear shifter several times in order to get it to shut off.
#11423758 |
When I start engine it says action required shift to park and it’s already in park. Then car won’t move. This has happened several times. Sometimes it will start but says vehicle propulsion is reduced and I drove it like this once and it was dangerous. This keeps happening and I am scared!
#11422040 |
Shifter is defective so that the car won't turn off, instead sticks on with "Shift to Park" warning. This makes it not possible to lock the car using the buttons, and drains the battery, resulting in stranded driver. Dealership said that they had never heard of it, but I see on the internet that is very, very, very, very, very common problem. Started after about 5,000 miles, has done is sporadically for last 4 years. Getting worse so that rarely turns off now, we just leave it on a charger all the time now.
#11421520 |
When turning the car off a "shift to park" message appeared. The car wouldn't automatically lock because it thought it was still in drive. When I returned I tried to turn the car on while still in park, I shifted back to Drive and then back to park and the same message appeared when I tried to turn it on as if it still hadn't turned off. No AC, steering or the startup sound so I tried to wiggle it and then took my foot off the brake and then turned off, I then opened the door to cut power. I put my foot on the brake and the car started normally but this is the 4th time in less than a week. Heat outside at this time of year is 115 degrees+ so being stranded for a neutral safety switch or transmission gear sensor is unacceptable especially when my...

Shift to park issue. Can not turn the car off as it does not recognize it is in Park.
#11421073 |
Intermittent Shift to Park Message - which on my car is permanent. My car will not shut off as it does not think it is in park. This is a very common problem with a number GM vehicles especially the Chevy Volt and should be subject to a recall. GM has a newly designed transmission control assembly to correct this problem.
#11419956 |
When turning off the car, after shifting to park, I get a message indicating "Shift to Park". As it is already in Park, there is nothing that can be done. I have sometimes been able to get it to go away by continually starting, shifting to drive, shifting back to park and then trying to shut the car down again. Sometimes I just don't have time to do it and have to leave the car in this state and leave the car. I doubt it could be driven as I have the key fob, but it is on and when I get back, the car is powered up. I am not sure if there are safety implications to this as I don't know the cause of this problem. I have researched on line and this is not unique to my 2017 Volt.
#11419803 | Fire
The charger that was supplied with the new car caught fire in the J Connector handle and melted (pictures attached). this happened in my garage and I discovered it within 3 hours after it happened due to a chemical smelling smoke haze in the garage, and a pile of ash on the floor under the J Connector. There was no other damage other than the connector and it took a few hours to air out the garage. I had plugged it in to be charged at 12 amps with the dash indicating "7 miles" of charge left. The dash indicated "9 miles" of charge available after the fire (full charge this time of year is approximately 58 miles). The fire went out on its own. The charger has been plugged in the same outlet for the last 3 years and there is almost no load on that circuit other than...
