CAR IS BURNING EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF OIL. DEALER TOLD ME (OVER PHONE) THAT TRIANGLE WAS FROM TAKING CORNERS TOO FAST (DEALER HAS SINCE SAID THIS WAS INACCURATE INFO). OIL CHANGE FOR LIFE (EVERY 10K MILES) AT DEALER AND NO ONE HAS EVER NOTIFIED ME THAT CAR IS USING OIL. 6,000 MILES AFTER LAST OIL CHANGE, OVER 3 1/2 QUARTS OF OIL USED. I NEARLY LOCKED UP THE ENGINE. CAR IS NOT LEAKING OIL. CAR SOMETIMES SMELLS OF OIL AFTER STARTING. TOYOTA HAS EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR CERTAIN MODELS FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM, BUT NOT FOR PRIUS. MY CAR HAS 117,000 MILES AND THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR AT LEAST THE LAST 25,000 MILES (BASED UPON ORANGE WARNING TRIANGLE). ACCORDING TO DEALER, PROBLEM IS WITH RINGS (WHICH IS THE RECALL FOR OTHER TOYOTA CARS). ALSO, ACCORDING TO DEALER, THIS IS A REAL PROBLEM FOR OTHER PRIUS OWNERS WITH 100,000+ MILES....
BURNING OIL ISSUE. FRONT HEAD LIGHT SHORT CIRCUIT OR BURNED OUT. LEATHER SEAT SEPARATED TWICE.
I ALONG WITH AN ALARMING AMOUNT OF OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE 2010 PRIUS BEGIN TO BURN OIL AT AN ALARMINGLY HIGH RATE AROUND 60-80K MILES. THIS IS ACCOMPANIED WITH AN EMISSION INTO THE CABIN OF NOXIOUS FUMES DURING HIGH OIL BURN RATE (HEAVIER ACCELERATION) MOMENTS. WE HAVE ALL BEEN TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIPS THAT THIS IS "NORMAL". THIS HAS LED TO BURNING OVER A QUART OF OIL EVERY 1000 MILES, HEADACHES FROM THE FUMES, AND NOW I HAVE FOUND OUT THERE IS SUBSTANTIAL SOOT BUILDUP IN THE ENGINE RESULTING FROM THE OIL BURNING REQUIRING VERY COSTLY REPAIRS. TOYOTA REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING TO HELP OR EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE THE COSTLY ISSUE.
CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM CAR SHUTS OFF AND CAN NOT RESTART, TRIED SYSTEM RESET PER MANUAL BUT WOULD NOT CLEAR HYBRID. TOWED TO DEALER, DTC CODE P3004-800, TECH SAID THIS WAS THE ONLY CODE, HAD RECALL EOE REFLASH 04-14-2014 IPM EXTENDED 15 YEARS. CAR WAS IN MOTION PER WIFE. (IT HAD BEEN RAINING) THE DTC P3004-800 POWER CABLE MALFUNCTION
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT 70 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CHECK ENGINE AND GENERAL WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT COASTED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE WATER PUMP FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 12V536000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING, HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 92,000.
MY PRIUS IS BURNING AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF OIL. MORE THAN A QUART EVERY 1000 MILES.
MY CAR IS CONSUMING ABOUT 1 QUART OF OIL EVERY THOUSAND MILES, SOMETIMES EVEN MORE. I HAVE ALWAYS GOT THE OIL REPLACED IN A VERY TIMELY MANNER AND WITH ONLY AROUND 118,000 MILES ON IT, THIS IS VERY TROUBLING. MY DEALERSHIP IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND THEY HAVE CHARGED ME UPWARDS OF $4,000 TO REPLACE THE HEAD GASKET AND THE OIL PAN GASKET SAYING IT WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM, WHICH IT DIDN'T. THEY DID THE OIL COMPRESSION CHECK WITH NO SIGN OF WHERE THE OIL WAS GOING AS THERE WERE NO ADDITIONAL LEAKS ACCORDING TO THEM. THEY REFUSE TO THINK THIS IS A PROBLEM, WHICH I THINK IS A BLATANT LIE. THEY KNOW THAT THIS SHOULDN'T BE THE CASE AND WANT ME TO GET THE ENGINE REBUILT FOR AN ADDITIONAL $4,500, WHICH IS RIDICULOUS FOR A CAR WITH SUCH LOW MILEAGE. I WANT TOYOTA TO FIX THIS PROBLEM NOW....
2010 TOYOTA PRIUS, 84,000 MILES: EXPERIENCED LOSS OF OIL, TOOK TO DEALER WHO TOPPED OFF AND ASKED ME TO RETURN. RETURNED AT 85,790 MILES AFTER FURTHER LOSS OF OIL (DOWN TWO QUARTS). THE TOYOTA MECHANIC HAD TO CALL TOYOTA, WHO STATED THEY KNEW OF THE PROBLEM. THE PCV STICKS OPEN, RESULTING IN OIL BEING SPRAYED WHERE IT DOESN'T BELONG. REPAIR, WHICH INCLUDES REPLACEMENT OF SEVERAL PARTS, ESTIMATED AT $629.00. THE TOYOTA SERVICE TECH WAS NOT CONFIDENT THE REPAIR WOULD NOT BE NEEDED AGAIN, AND BLAMED USE OF ETHANOL IN GASOLINE AS THE CULPRIT. HOWEVER, ETHANOL HAS BEEN IN USE SINCE WELL BEFORE THIS MODEL WAS RELEASED ON THE MARKET. TOYOTA KNOWS IT HAS A PROBLEM, BUT HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL.
RESOLUTION TO EXCESSIVE OIL USE: SWITCH FROM FACTORY RECOMMENDED 0W-20 FULL SYNTHETIC TO MOBILE 1 HIGH MILEAGE 5W-30 FULL SYNTHETIC.
ON FEBRUARY 27, 2015, OUR HOUSE BURNED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT WHILE WE WERE ASLEEP. THE FIRE STARTED IN THE NEAR VICINITY OF THE RIGHT FRONT HEADLIGHT OF THE 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CAR HAD BEEN SERVICED JUST BEFORE THE FIRE ON FEBRUARY 25, 2015 AT THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. THE CAR WAS OFF AT THE TIME AND THE KEY WAS NOT IN THE CAR AT THE TIME OF THE FIRE. WHILE WE WERE SLEEPING, THE CAR EVIDENTLY CAUGHT FIRE SPONTANEOUSLY AT APPROXIMATELY 2 A.M. WHILE IT WAS PARKED IN THE GARAGE. THE GARAGE DOOR WAS CLOSED. BY THE TIME WE WOKE UP, THE GARAGE WAS FULLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES. WE WERE ABLE TO ESCAPE THE FIRE. SERIOUS OIL CONSUMPTION. TOOK IT TO THREE DIFFERENT TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS AND THEY ALL HAVE SAID THE OIL CONSUMPTION IS WITHIN NORMAL LIMITS. HAVE TO ADD OIL EVERY1000 MILES. I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR STALLED AND STATED, "CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM". STOPPED THE CAR RIGHT AWAY CALLED MY INSURANCE COMPANY FOR EMERGENCY ROAD SERVICE AND HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A TOYOTA FACILITY WHERE THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A FAILED INVERTER, WHICH IS PART OF THE HYBRID SYSTEM. ON MARCH 4TH 2015 AT 8:00 AM, MY WIFE WAS TRYING TO CHANGE A PARKING SPOT INTO ANOTHER ABOUT 50 FEET AWAY IN THE SAME CHURCH PARKING LOT. SHE STARTED THE ENGINE AND THE CAR WAS PUT ON DRIVE. WITHIN A FRACTION OF A SECOND, THE CAR ACCELERATED BEYOND CONTROL. SHE COULD NOT STEER OR STOP THE CAR. THE CAR JUMPED A CURB, HIT A LIGHT POOL AND LANDED ON A GRASSY AREA. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS. AS I BRAKE AT LOW SPEEDS, THE CAR SURGES AHEAD AS THOUGH YOUR FOOT IS ON THE ACCELERATOR. SOMETIMES IT WAS SO SUBTLE, YOU WONDERED IF IT REALLY HAPPENED. TODAY (11/23/14) THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO MISTAKING IT. THE CAR SURGED FORWARD A COUPLE OF FEET AS I WAS SLOWING TO TURN LEFT. THE HYBRID INVERTER ASSEMBLY FAILED WHEN I TRIED TO ACCELERATE FROM A STOP ONTO A RURAL HIGHWAY. THIS OCCURRED APPROXIMATELY TWO MONTHS AFTER RECEIVING THE MOTOR GENERATOR ECU AND POWER MANAGEMENT ECU SOFTWARE UPDATE THAT WAS INTENDED TO PREVENT THIS TYPE OF FAILURE.I WAS NOTIFIED OF THIS UPDATE/RECALL IN LATE MARCH 2014 AND HAD THE UPDATE COMPLETED AT A AUTHORIZED TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER. *TR

I WAS DRIVING WITH THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC (AROUND 30 MPH) ON A MAIN SURFACE STREET IN A MIDDLE LANE OF A MULTILANE STREET WHEN SUDDENLY THE ENGINE STOPPED, AND I WAS UNABLE TO MAKE THE ENGINE RESPOND. ON MONDAY FEBRUARY 24TH 2014 MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS, HYBRID INVERTER FAILED WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND MY CAR SUDDENLY STOPPED ON THE ROAD. I LOOKED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND THE CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM WAS ILLUMINATED. THE CAR WOULD NOT START. I DECIDED TO CALL A TOLL TRUCK COMPANY TO TAKE ME TO THE NEAREST TOYOTA DEALER. ONCE I ARRIVED THE SERVICE ADVISOR INFORMED ME, THE 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS HAS TWO ACTIVE SAFETY RECALLS. I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED. THE TWO SAFETY RECALLS ARE THE HYBRID INVERTER & BRAKE BOOSTER PUMP ASSEMBLY. TODAY IS THURSDAY FEBRUARY 27TH 2014 AND THE TOYOTA DEALER HAS FAILED TO REPAIR AND RETURN MY CAR. THE TOYOTA DEALER STATED THIS IS A SAFETY RECALL, THEY NEED PERMISSION FROM TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS TO APPROVE PARTS. I PLEADED WITH THE TOYOTA DEALER TO PROVIDE ME WITH A VEHICLE, WHILE I WAIT, THEY REFUSED. *TR
DRIVING ON FREEWAY AND CAR OVERHEATED. THERE WAS NEVER ANY WARNINGS OF OVERHEATING PROBLEMS BEFORE. PULLED OVER ON FREEWAY AND HAD CAR TOWED TO AUTO SERVICE. WATER-PUMP WAS NOT WORKING, FAN STOPPED TURNING, COST TO REPLACE WAS $1260, TOYOTA WOULD NOT HELP AS CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. *TR
WHILE CAREFULLY PARKING MY PRIUS 2010 AT A HOSPITAL IT ACCELERATED SUDDENLY AND CRASHED OVER THE CEMENT CURB. I WAS BARELY MOVING, THAT IS I STILL HAD MY FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR,MAYBE I COULD SAY COASTING, WHEN THIS ACCELERATION SUDDENLY OCCURRED. DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY IN ALBANY, NY AREA, SLOWED DOWN TO GO THROUGH TOLLBOOTH AS I BEGAN TO ACCELERATE TO CONTINUE ON HIGHWAY, CHECK HYBRID LIGHT CAME ON AND ENGINE ABRUPTLY STOPPED. AT ABOUT 125,000 MILES, THE ENGINE WARNED ME OF LOW OIL. IT WAS THE FIRST SUCH WARNING EVER WITH THIS VEHICLE. AT THAT TIME I COULD SECURE ONLY 2 QUARTS OF THE REQUIRED SYNTHETIC OIL AND IT WAS STILL OVER 1 QUART LOW. ABOUT 500 MILES LATER I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO TOYOTA CHULA VISTA AND EXPLAINED. THEY ADDED 3 MORE QUARTS OF OIL AND SUGGESTED A SERIES OF OIL CONSUMPTION TESTS. I CALLED TOYOTA MOTOR USA CONSUMER RELATIONS AND OPENED A CASE INDICATING THAT I WAS CONSUMING (BURNING NOT DRIPPING) 1 TO 2 QUARTS PER 1,000 MILES AND MY MPG HAD DECREASED FROM 46 AVG TO 35 AVG. THE OIL CONSUMPTION OVER THE NEXT 3 MONTHS AVERAGED 1 QT/600 MILES AND MY AVG MPG DETERIORATED FURTHER TO 29 MPG. THE INCIDENT OCCURRED WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE ONTO A TWO-LANE HIGHWAY. BECAUSE OF A SLOW AND SHARP U-TURN WHICH PRECEDES THE SHORT ON-RAMP, I DISABLED THE ECO MODE FOR BETTER ACCELERATION. WHEN I PRESSED DOWN ON THE GAS, THE CAR IMMEDIATELY EMITTED A LOUD SOUND, BECAME UNRESPONSIVE AND WAS UNABLE TO GAIN ADDITIONAL SPEED. INCIDENT #1 BRAKE: ON JANUARY 17, 2013 AS I WAS ENTERING THE INTERSECTION ABOUT 20MPH, I APPLIED MY BRAKES, BUT THEY WENT STRAIGHT TO THE FLOOR AND WARNING LIGHT STARTED BLINKING. I PRESSED BRAKES VERY HARD AND CAR ALMOST STOP, THEN, ITS BRAKES GAVE UP. THERE IS SUDDEN SLIGHT "UNINTENDED ACCELERATION" AND I ALMOST HIT CAR FRONT OF ME. WHILE MAKING A U TURN THE VEHICLE LOST POWER AND THE CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM WARNING ILLUMINATED. THE CAR DIED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. THE DEALER CLAIMED THAT THERE WAS OIL IN THE THROTTLE BODY CAUSED BY OVERFILLING AND THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE WITH OIL OVERFILLS ON PRIUS VEHICLES. THE LAST OIL CHANGE HAD BEEN 8,000 MILES AND MORE THAN 2 MONTHS PREVIOUS. THE PLACE THAT PERFORMED THE OIL CHANGE AGREED TO LOOK AT CAR AND CLEAN THE THROTTLE BODY. THEY ALSO CHECKED THE OIL AND MADE SURE IT WAS CORRECT LEVEL. THREE WEEKS LATER THE SAME THING OCCURRED. THIS TIME THE CAR LOST POWER AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS AT DEALERSHIP FOR 25000 MILE SERVICE. ON 11/07/2012 AT 1700 THE DEALERSHIP CALLED AND REPORTED THAT THE CAR IS "INFESTED WITH RODENTS." STATED THAT HEADLINER IS SATURATED WITH URINE/ FECES, AIR AND CABIN AIR FILTERS DESTROYED, WIRES CHEWED, RODENTS FOUND TO BE LIVING IN DASHBOARD, IN DOOR INTERIORS, AND OTHER AREAS. REPORTED THAT THIS WAS "THE WORST CASE WE'VE SEEN." CAR IS OWNED BY TWO PROFESSIONALS- NO CHILDREN WHO WOULD HAVE DROPPED FOOD AND NO FOOD EVER EATEN IN VEHICLE.
