Vehicle developed a loud squeak coming from driver’s side front wheel well that sounded like a something vibrating or rubbing a spring at ~54300 miles. Reported issue to Tesla via the Tesla app. Tesla’s recommended solution is to replace both the right and left Upper Control Arm. Further research found that this is a widespread problem reported by Tesla owners on the web. Indeed when I was at the Tesla Service Center the women in line in front of me was bring in her vehicle for the same problem. The upper control arms include a ball joint that needs to be lubricated. This vehicle’s upper control arms DO NOT have a built in means to lubricate that joint like a Zerk fitting. The vehicle is available for inspection. The car has had numerous ball joints fail over its service life. None were covered under warranty (at least the first set should have been). Tesla doesn't consider this safety critical, and for the latest round, made me wait over a month for parts to arrive. I don't know how severe the problem actually is and whether its dangerous or not, but they never even bothered to inspect it. This is clearly a design flaw since these keep failing, and the control arms have to be replaced as well since its apparently one assembly.
2018 Tesla Model 3 LR RWD with approximately 56,000 miles. A loud squeaking/creaking noise started on front driver side when turning at low speeds. This progressed to higher speeds. I inspected the car and found that the noise is coming from the upper control arm ball joint. It seems this is a common issue for this vehicle according to online research. This is a potential safety issue as this seems to be a premature failure of the part. Basic vehicle warranty recently ended. Tesla plans on replacing the upper control arm and charging me full price for parts and labor.
The ball joint and control arms in the front start squeaking just after warranty ends at 50k miles. Eventually this could lead to it locking up and causing an accident. This needs to be a covered recall, since all 2018 tesla model 3 cars experience this. When researching I found out how much of a problem this is and itvwill cost over 1000 dollars to fix.
Hello. I am writing this report to describe a dramatic decrease in steering responsiveness and vehicle front-end control over my ownership of this car from new. Over about the last year, I have noticed that the steering and handling of the vehicle is not nearly as composed as it was when new. Today, the car has difficulty staying centered in the lane. This unsteadiness is especially evident at Interstate speeds (60-75mph) while the car enters a curve and experiences suspension loading. It feels loose and floaty, almost like the toe is changing while mid-corner. This results in "hunting" or back-and-forth steering inputs just to stay on center. Furthermore, any type of road imperfection causes dramatic bump steer. This culminates into white-knuckled grip driving, since the car will sharply pull out of its driving line. Performance driving, long road trips, or higher-speed cruising are no longer possible with this uncertain steering....
The upper control arm, UAC, on my Tesla is rubbing against its joint causing significant noise such as squeaking and friction when turning the steering wheel due to normal wear and tear. More specifically, the lubricant inside the UAC has worn off. This is a known issue when researching online forums. However, Tesla refuses to acknowledge the defect and has "renamed" its part number. This has put myself and others at risk because of the high cost associated on repairing and replacing the UAC. DIY-ers that cannot afford this out-of-warranty repair are taking it in their own hands at an attempt to alleviate the noise and friction caused by a faulty and defective UAC. On January 11, 2022 I was driving in Live Oak, Florida with my cousin when my left lateral link came loose from the chassis. The left driver’s side tire turned to the right and the linkage arm dug into the ground causing the car to veer right and bringing the car to an abrupt stop. By the grace of God we were driving in town and only going about 20 mile per hour and no one was hurt but the front driver’s side tire was shoved against the wheel well. The driver’s side door can’t be opened as a result of the left front quarter being pushed into the driver’s door which may indicate frame damage. Both Front Upper Control Arms needed replacing. Suspension had an awful creaking noise. They said it wasn’t officially a service bulletin or recall however they have been proactively fixing cars without the owners asking for them (several people I know), and I had to pay for the repair due to being out of warranty. This was added to my last service appointment on their behalf but it needed to be corrected. Issue became prevalent a week prior. Unsure if safety was at risk. No warning messages. Only inspected and confirmed by Tesla themselves.
I own a 2018 Tesla Model 3. On December 1st, 2021 I heard a clunk in the front left wheel area while backing up. I stopped and found a 3 inch long 1/2 inch diameter bolt on the ground. I had my vehicle towed to the Tesla service center. They claimed that this was not associated to the recall for similar failure on 2019 and 2020 vehicles, but they extended the warranty and replaced the entire front end suspension system. Specifically, they claimed that this is not a safety issue, but they did me a "favor" by servicing this under warranty. The repair was exactly the same as the recall on the 2019 and 2020 Tesla model 3 cars. Then on January 14, 2022 I was driving over a very low speed bump and the entire right front end dropped. The contact owns a 2018 Tesla Model 3. The contact stated that the vehicle had begun swaying while driving approximately 60 MPH. Additionally, the contact noticed a creaking noise coming from underneath the vehicle. The contact pulled into a parking lot and the vehicle suddenly stalled. The contact noticed that the control arm had detached. The vehicle was towed to the dealer but was not yet diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer and dealer were informed of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 33,000.
Every time I make a turn or go over a bump, there is a loud squeaky noise and the tire pressure goes down from 44 to 36 psi. Even when driving straight without anything like a stop or a bump, the squeaky noises happens. The noise comes from the front passenger side.
Driver front lower control arm bolt backed themselves out
Bolt that held holds the control and subframe came loosened over time. Tesla is saying it is my fault but there are multiple people with the same issue on the internet. Consumer stated back in August 2021, front lateral link separated and caused damage to sub frame. It was determined by Tesla’s service center at the time that this was due to driving conditions but driving on California roads should not cause an issue this damaging. Approximately two months before the incident, I started having occasional clicks/clunks/creaking noises when turning the steering wheel at low speeds. By the time I got an appointment and took it to a Tesla service center (Nov 4, 2020), they couldn't reproduce and didn't care to check the suspension beyond a test drive. The noise gets worse, and I schedule another appointment for Dec 16, 2020. During this time, the noise gets even worse, and the car suffers from occasional suspension vibration & shaking. Additionally, the symptoms start to manifest at higher and higher speeds. On Dec 13, 2020, the entire front suspension started to shake at around 35 mph which continued for ~10 seconds until I slowed down. This was just as I left home. DURING LOW SPEED, BOLTS BECAME LOOSE AND COMPLETELY DROPPED OUT OF LOWER CONTROL ARM CAUSING ONE WHEEL TO VEER TO THE RIGHT. THE CAR WAS PULLING VERY HARD TO THE LEFT. TOOK IT TO TESLA SERVICE CENTER. THEY GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE OF NEARLY $6000 TO REPLACE CONTROL ARMS AND BUSHINGS AND STEERING RACK ETC. THEY SAID THE PARTS WERE DAMAGED FROM "OUTSIDE INFLUENCE". WHATEVER THAT MEANS. THE CAR IS 18 MONTHS OLD AND HAS 29,000 MILES. NO ACCIDENTS OR DAMAGE EVER. THIS IS A MAJOR MANUFACTURING DEFECT THAT COULD HAVE HAD DISASTROUS OUTCOMES IF I DID NOT PICK UP ON THE SYMPTOMS FIRST. THIS IS IN ABSOLUTELY NO WAY RELATED TO ANY "OUTSIDE INFLUENCE". FRONT DRIVER SUSPENSION EXPERIENCED DAMAGE FROM A LOW SPEED TURN INTO A PARKING LOT. THE CAR HAD A CONTINUOUS SQUEAK FROM THE FRONT RIGHT SIDE WHILE DRIVING AFTER THE EVENT. I CALLED TESLA SERVICE AND THEY CAME ON SITE TO DO A DIAGNOSTIC. THEY FOUND A MAJOR ISSUE WITH THE FRONT DRIVER SUSPENSION AND FOUND THAT IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DIAGNOSTIC AND REPAIR WERE FREE.
I AM HAVING ISSUES TWICE IN 2 YEARS MY UPPER CONTROL ARM IS MAKING VERY BAD NOISE WHILE DRIVING THEN GET IT REPLACED THEN FROM RIGHT SIDE FAILED AGAIN AND KEEP MAKING NOISE WHILE DRIVING THEN I GOT THIS REPLACED. THE WHEEL AND TIRE ARE BOTH UNDAMAGED. IT IS VERY UNLIKELY THAT SO MUCH FORCE CAN HAVE BEEN TRANSMITTED THROUGH THE RELATIVELY FRAGILE ALLOY WHEEL AS TO CAUSE ALL THAT DAMAGE TO THE SUSPENSION COMPONENTS. THE MODEL 3 SHARES SIMILAR SUSPENSION COMPONENTS TO THOSE USED IN THE MODEL S AND X. SO MANY EXAMPLES OF SUSPENSION FAILURES INDICATE A SYSTEMIC PROBLEM.
