POWER STEERING GOES OUT INTERMITTENTLY WHEN RESTARTING THE CAR IT APPEARS TO WORK AGAIN FOR A WHILE. THERE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE ANY PATTERN AS TO WHAT CAUSES THE POWER STEERING TO STOP WORKING. *TR
MY 2007 SATURN ION OCCASIONALLY LOSES POWER STEERING. WHEN IT DOES, THE CAR CHIMES 3 TIMES AND DISPLAYS PWR STR ON THE ODOMETER DISPLAY. THIS HAPPENED ONCE LAST MONTH, ONCE YESTERDAY, AND 3 TIMES TODAY. IT SEEMS TO BE TRULY RANDOM, AS I DROVE 80 MILES BEFORE THE FIRST INCIDENT TODAY, ONLY A COUPLE OF MINUTES THE OTHER THREE TIMES, AND 90 MILES WITHOUT INCIDENT AFTER THE FINAL OCCURRENCE TODAY. POWER STEERING REMAINS OUT UNTIL I CYCLE THE IGNITION SWITCH. I FOUND THAT I COULD SWITCH TO OFF AND BACK ON QUICKLY ENOUGH TO KEEP THE ENGINE RUNNING, AND EVEN THIS BRIEF INTERRUPTION IN POWER WAS ENOUGH TO RESET THE FAULT. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM, AS THE CAR IS VERY HARD TO STEER WITHOUT POWER STEERING. I FEAR THAT MY WIFE MAY NOT BE STRONG ENOUGH TO "MUSCLE" THE CAR IN THIS CONDITION. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 SATURN ION. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY BETWEEN 10-15 MPH, WITHOUT WARNING THERE WAS A LOSS OF POWER STEERING . THE CONTACT PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH CAUTION. THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE IN OPERATION. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHENEVER THE VEHICLE WAS IN OPERATION. THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.

FOR THE PAST THREE WEEKS, THE POWER STEERING ON MY 2007 SATURN ION TURNS OFF WHILE I'M DRIVING. I HAVE TO TURN OFF THE CAR AND RE-START IT. IT HAS HAPPENED WHILE I'M GOING OVER 55 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY. IT HAPPENS AT LEAST 6 TIMES PER DAY. *TR
POWER STEERING GOES OUT AFTER ONLY A FEW MOMENTS RUNNING. DIFFICULTY STEERING AT LOW SPEEDS. EXACT SAME COMPLAINTS AS THOSE IN THE GM RECALL, THOUGH THE 2007 SATURN ION WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THAT RECALL. THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT EVERY TIME THE VEHICLE IS USED. DEALER SAID TO FIX IT WOULD NORMALLY REQUIRE A POWER STEERING MOTOR TO BE REPLACED, BUT SINCE SATURN IS DISCONTINUED, GM WILL ONLY PROVIDE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLIES AS A FIX. INCIDENT DATE IS APPROXIMATE, THOUGH IT RECURS EVERY DAY THE CAR IS USED. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 SATURN ION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE, THE POWER STEERING WOULD WORK AS DESIGNED; HOWEVER ONCE THE ENGINE WAS WARM, THE POWER STEERING WOULD SPORADICALLY FAIL. THE FAILURE OCCURRED AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. ONCE THE VEHICLE HAD COOLED, THE POWER STEERING WOULD RESET ITSELF. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 48,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 54,000.
ON MARCH 10, 2010, THE POWER STEERING ON MY 2007 SATURN ION TURNED OFF. I HAD TO TURN OFF THE CAR AND RESTART IT. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 SATURN ION. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING AT A SPEED OF 45 MPH THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE POWER STEERING SUDDENLY STOPPED FUNCTIONING. AFTER RESTARTING THE VEHICLE THE FAILURE CORRECTED ITSELF AND THE POWER STEERING WAS PERFORMING NORMALLY. THE FAILURE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 69800.
2007 SATURN ION HAS A POWER STEERING PROBLEM WHICH CAUSE THE STEERING TO LOCK AND HARD TO STEER IT CAN NOT BE REPAIRED BY PUTTING IN POWER STEERING FLUID, IT DOESN'T WORK THE ELECTRICAL LIGHT APPEARS ON THE DASH. THIS OCCURS AFTER ONLY 33,000 MILES, AND THE ONLY WAY TO CORRECT IT IS TO PUT A NEW MOTOR MODULE AND SWITCH WITH A REPAIR COST OF $997.00. AFTER SURFING THE INTERNET, WE ARE ONE OF MANY WHO ARE EXPERIENCES THIS PROBLEM. I ASK IF A DEATH HAS TO OCCUR IN ORDER FOR THIS TO BECOME A RECALL VEHICLE. THE CAR HAS ABOUT 54,000 MILES ON IT NOW. IN THE MID 40,000 MILE RANGE, WHENEVER WE WOULD MAKE MANY TURNS (WE LIVE IN THE MOUNTAINS--FEW STRAIGHTAWAYS), THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING STARTED GOING OUT. THE CAR CAN STILL BE STEERED, BUT WITH DIFFICULTY. THIS PROBLEM IS ONLY GRADUALLY GETTING WORSE. MY 2007 SATURN ION IS EXPERIENCING THIS DEFECT WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THE MECHANIC EXPLAINED THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE (THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM RANDOMLY SHORTS AND CAUSES DRIVING HAZARDS) THEY SAID IT HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED YET BUT IT IS SEEN QUITE OFTEN FOR ALL GM VEHICLES WITH THAT SYSTEM AND THAT IT IS ALWAYS 1 OF 2 THINGS THE EPS(ELECTRONIC POWER ASSISTED STEERING) OR THE STEERING COLUMN. MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING HER 2007 SATURN ION COUPE ACROSS THE BEN FRANKLIN BRIDGE IN PHILADELPHIA, PA AND THE POWER STEERING FAILED. THE DASHBOARD LIGHT CAME ON AND THE STEERING CUT OUT 5 TIMES. IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER THE CAR AND THE STEERING WOULD TEMPORARILY GO TO POWER AND THEN BACK TO MANUAL. THERE IS NO PLACE TO PULL OVER. SHE STAYED CALM AND WAS ABLE TO GET TO A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OVER AND AVOIDED AN ACCIDENT. WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A POWER STEERING ASSIST REPLACEMENT TODAY. THE COST WAS $500. I CHECKED ON THE INTERNET AND APPARENTLY THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM SINCE 2004. WE BOUGHT THIS CAR BECAUSE IT HAD A HIGH SAFETY RATING AND ONSTAR DIAGNOSTICS. WE CONTACTED ONSTAR TO CHECK TO SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE STEERING. ONSTAR APPARENTLY DOES NOT HAVE ACCESS TO STEERING FAILURE..AT...

THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. WHEN THE ENGINE RESTARTED THE VEHICLE OPERATED NORMALLY. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY AT ANY GIVEN SPEED RATE. THE AUTHORIZED DEALER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE MALFUNCTION. THE REPAIR COST FOR A POWER STEERING MOTOR WAS $700. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 67,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 SATURN ION. WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS UNDER 20 MPH THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME EXTREMELY STIFF, WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHEEL WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED. THE DEALER REPLACED THE ENTIRE STEERING SHAFT. THE ABS WARNING LIGHT WOULD INTERMITTENTLY ILLUMINATE ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED BRINGING THE VEHICLE IN FOR DIAGNOSIS WHILE THE WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE WARNING LIGHT WOULD ONLY ILLUMINATE INTERMITTENTLY AND THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO PRODUCE DIAGNOSTIC CODES WITHOUT IT ILLUMINATED. NO ADDITIONAL REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE UNDER 15,000. UPDATED 4/30/10 *CN THE CONSUMER STATED THE REPAIRS WERE MADE. UPDATED 05/10/10*JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 SATURN ION. WHILE DRIVING 15 MPH THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND SHE HAD TO USE FORCE TO DRIVE ONTO THE SIDE OF ROAD. SHE THEN TURNED THE VEHICLE ON AND OFF WHEN SHE NOTICED THAT THE POWER STEERING BEGAN TO WORK NORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. SHE WILL HAVE AN ADDITIONAL DIAGNOSTIC TEST PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE BY ANOTHER DEALER. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 36000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 45554.
2007 SATURN ION HAS A REALLY BIG PROBLEM. POWER STEERING GOES OFF 3-5 TIMES A DAY. CAR DASHBOARD RINGS 3 TIMES AND POWER STEERING LIGHT COMES ON AND CARS POWER STEERING SHUTS OFF. CALLED SATURN AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG NOW WITH CAR SO I WOULD TO REPAIR THE CAR AND IF ENOUGH PEOPLE COMPLAINED THEN THEY WOULD INVESTIGATE AND MAKE A DECISION OR I COULD DRIVE THE CAR AND WHEN IT SHUTS OFF PULL OVER AND RESTART THE CAR. I HAVE A 2007 SATURN ION AND READ THIS MORNING THAT YOU ARE ISSUING A RECALL FOR THE CHEVY COBALT AND PONTIAC PURSUIT/G5. WHAT CONCERNS ME IS THAT YOU ARE NOT RECALLING THE ION BECAUSE OF A LACK OF REPORTED ISSUES. I HAVE RALLIED ION OWNERS FROM OUR MAIN SATURN ION CLUB SITES LISTED BELOW, WHAT CAN ALSO BE FOUND ON THESE SITES IS THE LARGE NUMBER OF FAILURES OF THE POWER STEERING ON THESE CARS, WHICH IS THE SAME PART NUMBER THAT HAS BEEN DEEMED DEFECTIVE ON THE COBALT/G5/PURSUIT. THE COBALT/G5/PURSUIT WAS BASED OFF AND ENGINEERED FROM THE SATURN ION AND SHARES THE ENTIRE DRIVETRAIN, STEERING SYSTEM AND WHEEL/TIRE SIZES WITH ONLY VERY MINOR DIFFERENCES IF ANY IN WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION AND PARTS. THIS IS SO MUCH SO, COBALT SUSPENSION PARTS ARE OFTEN PUT ON IONS. PLEASE DO NOT IGNORE THE IONS IN THIS RECALL, OUR CARS HAVE BEEN IGNORED...
POWER STEERING JUST ALL OF A SUDDEN GOES OUT ON MY SATURN VEHICLE WHILE IN OPERATION. A CHIME SOUNDS INDICATING SOMETHINGS WRONG AND THE POWER STEERING INDICATOR COMES ON THE DASH BOARD. YOU LOOSE ALL POWER STEERING FUNCTION AND ITS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE TO MANEUVER AT ALL, AT HIGH SPEEDS, ESPECIALLY WHEN TURNING IT CAN BE DEADLY AS YOU CAN'T CONTROL THE WHEEL AND ALMOST BREAK YOUR ARM TRYING AND CAN EITHER HIT SOMEONE OR SOMETHING. WHEN YOU READ OVER THE USER MANUAL IT TELLS YOU THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDS TO BE SERVICED AND REFERS YOU TO A SATURN LOCATION TO HAVE THE REPAIR COMPLETED. UPON VISITING THE DEALERSHIP, THEY CAN ONLY OFFER YOU A COSTLY REPAIR TO REPLACE THE MOTOR WHICH THEY CAN'T GUARANTEE THAT IT WILL EVER GO OUT AGAIN. THIS IS NOT SAFE AT ALL! *TR

HOWEVER AFTER SEVERAL MINUTES OF DRIVING THE VEHICLE FAILED AGAIN.. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER MULTIPLE TIMES FOR INSPECTION. SINCE THE TECHNICIANS COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE THEY COULD NOT PROVIDE A REMEDY. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC CONCLUDED POWER STEERING MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED AT HER EXPENSE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 35000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 54000.
POWER STEERING SUDDENLY BECAME INOPERABLE WHILE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION. THE STEERING THEN BECOMES FUNCTIONAL AGAIN AFTER THE CAR IS SHUT OFF AND RE-STARTED. THE DANGER IS THAT IT MALFUNCTIONS RANDOMLY WHILE DRIVING, AND IS VERY DANGEROUS. RESEARCH INDICATES THAT THE PROBLEM IS WIDESPREAD WITH THIS VEHICLE. *TR

WE HAVE A 2007 SATURN ION WITH 45,000 MILES. YESTERDAY THE POWER STEERING MOTOR WENT OUT. MOTOR IS PART OF THE STEERING COLUMN SO WE HAVE TO HAVE IT ALL REPLACED. QUOTE BY A SATURN DEALER IS $1000. WE TALKED TO A LOCAL, REPUTABLE, MECHANIC AND HE INFORMED US THAT DRIVING THE CAR IN SUCH A CONDITION COULD RESULT IN THE CAR CATCHING ON FIRE FROM THE HEAT GENERATED FROM TURNING WITHOUT THE POWER ASSIST. THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE GOING BACK SEVERAL YEAR MODELS OF ION'S. WE DO NOT FEEL WE SHOULD HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE A SAFETY ISSUE FIXED ON THE CAR. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL. *TR

THE DEALER ALIGNED THE STEERING WHEEL BUT, AFTER THE REPAIR WAS MADE, THE VEHICLE BEGAN PULLING TO THE RIGHT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 17 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 2,058.
