The contact's mother owns a 2006 Saturn Ion. The contact stated that after driving the vehicle to his residence and parking the vehicle in the garage, he observed that a puddle of gasoline had accumulated overnight underneath the vehicle from the fuel tank by the driver's side rear wheel. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the failure might be related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 09V419000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 84,000.

FUEL SMELL AND FUEL LEAKAGE UNDER CAR. CRACKED FUEL LINE? RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR SOUTHERN STATES, BUT I LIVE IN OHIO. RECALL SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO ALL STATES, SINCE MY BREAKDOWN OCCURRED AT ONLY 70,000 MILES. I AM UNABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR OR REPAIR IT DUE TO EXPENSE AND OBVIOUS SAFETY CONCERNS FOR MY FAMILY. *TR
WE NOTICED THE SMELL OF GAS AND A PUDDLE OF GAS IN FRONT OF THE REAR TIRE ON THE DRIVER SIDE. I CRAWLED UNDER THE CAR AND LOOKED AT THE GAS LINES. THEY WERE CORRODED VERY BADLY FROM JUST IN FRONT OF THE TIRE ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE GAS TANK. THIS IS WHERE THERE ARE MANY BENDS IN THE PIPELINE WHICH PROBABLY CAUSED THE RUST PROTECTIVE COATING TO FAIL. THE GAS DRIPPED FOR QUITE A WHILE. I HAVE HAD CARS MUCH OLDER THAN THE SATURN WHICH DID NOT CORRODE THE GAS LINES. ONLINE SEARCHING SHOWS THIS IS A FAIRLY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE SATURN ION TO FAIL JUST IN FRONT OF THE REAR DRIVER SIDE. THIS HAS A HIGH POTENTIAL TO CAUSE A FIRE OR POISON SMELLS IF THE CAR WERE PARKED INSIDE. FORTUNATELY THERE WAS NO FIRE AND IT WAS NOT INSIDE MY GARAGE. I HOPE SOMEONE...
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 SATURN ION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER REFUELING THE VEHICLE, THE ODOR OF GASOLINE WAS PRESENT INSIDE. AFTER INSPECTING THE VEHICLE THE CONTACT DISCOVERED THAT FUEL WAS LEAKING FROM THE FUEL TANK. THE CONTACT ALSO INDICATED THAT THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE HORN WOULD NOT OPERATE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 115,000.
MY SATURN WAS AT THE DEALER FOR THE GM IGNITION RECALL. THE DEALER TOLD ME MY FUEL LINES WERE ROTTED AND LEAKING. I THOUGHT THIS ODD SINCE THE CAR WAS AT THE MECHANIC'S FOR A RUSTED EXHAUST THE WEEK BEFORE. I CALLED MY MECHANIC FROM THE DEALER AND HE SAID TO BRING THE CAR BACK THAT DAY. HE FOUND THE LEAKING LINES. TOTAL COST OF REPAIRS $567.42 SINCE ALL GM PARTS WERE PURCHASED. THE DEALER HAD TO HAVE KNOWN TO LOOK FOR THIS PROBLEM, LEADING ME TO BELIEVE IT'S A KNOWN ISSUE. *TR

I PURCHASED MY 2006 SATURN ION 3 IN 2008 FROM A DEALERSHIP. I HAVE HAD ALL THE RECALL ISSUES HAPPEN TO MY VEHICLE. 1) I HAVE REPLACED THE IGNITION SWITCH AND CYLINDER TWICE DUE TO THE CAR BEING UNABLE TO SHUT OFF. THIS HAPPENED IN 2008 AND AGAIN IN 2012. BOTH TIMES IT WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AND REPAIRS WERE DONE BY GM DEALERSHIP. EVEN THOUGH THESE HAVE BEEN REPLACED I WAS TOLD THEY NEED TO BE REPLACED AGAIN UNDER THE RECALL BECAUSE THOSE PARTS ARE FAULTY AS WELL. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM ISSUES. *SMD RECENTLY, THE EMERGENCY BRAKE THE CONSUMER STATED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED TWICE AND FINALLY, THE FUEL INJECTORS WERE REPLACED. RECENTLY, THE EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND STAYED ON WITHOUT THE EMERGENCY BRAKE BEING PULLED. ALSO, WHEN SHE PUSHED THE SHIFTER KNOB, THERE WAS A NOISE IN THE STEERING COLUMN. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 40,000.
MY IGNITION SWITCH HAS BEEN REPLACED 3 TIMES IN 4 YEARS, COSTING $350.00 EVERY TIME. IT KEEPS GOING OUT. NOW MY FUEL PUMP IS LEAKING. I LOOKED UP AND FOUND 3 DIFFERENT WEBSITE SHOWING RECALLS ON THE FUEL PUMP FOR MY YEAR, MAKE, AND MODEL OF MY CAR. SAFTYCAR.GOV, MOTORTREND.COM, AND USEDCARS.COM. I CALL BOTH GM AND SATURN NUMBER WHICH WERE PROVIDED AND THEY TELL ME THERE NO RECALLS FOR MY VEHICLE. NOW IT GOING TO COST $600 TO FIX MY PROBLEM. THE FUEL PUMP ON MY 2006 ION WITH ONLY 43,500 MILES NEEDS A NEW FUEL PUMP DO TO FAILURE THAT IS COVERED UNDER GM RECALL 09226 IN CERTAIN STATES. GAS FUMES HAVE BEEN NOTICED WITHIN THE CAR,OUTSIDE THE CAR NEAR THE FUEL TANK, AND STRONGLY WITHIN THE TRUNK. GM PERFORMED THE RECALL ON ONLY 53K CARS IN AZ AND NV IN OCT 2009. SEEMS THE FUEL PUMP MODULE CONNECTIONS ARE MADE OF PLASTIC AND CRACK WITH HEAT AND ROAD VIBRATION. HOWEVER, A CALL TO SATURN REVEALED THEY ARE HIDING BEHIND A VIN SPECIFIC RECALL AND THAT THE OTHER THOUSANDS OF IONS WITH THIS SERIOUS SAFETY-DEFECT ARE ONLY COVERED BY GM FOR 10 YR/120K MILE "SPECIAL COVERAGE WARRANTY" EXTENDED TO THIS DEFECTIVE PART. BEGAN EXPERIENCING A STRONG ODOR OF RAW GAS AND FUMES IN AUGUST OF 2011. I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH MY LOCAL REPAIR FACILITY TO HAVE THE PROBLEM EVALUATED. UPON RAISING THE VEHICLE AND DOING A VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE FUEL SYSTEM, RUN MARKS FROM GASOLINE COULD BE SEEN COMING DOWN FROM THE TOP OF THE TANK. AN EVAP TEST WAS PERFORMED AS WELL AND SMOKE COULD BE SEEN RISING OUT OF THE TANK AREA. THE TANK IS PLASTIC AND NO VISUAL CRACKS COULD BE SEEN. MY TECHNICIAN FELT THIS WAS UNUSUAL AT SUCH LOW MILEAGE. AFTER FURTHER DIGGING THE TECHNICIAN DISCOVERED A RECALL ON THE FUEL PUMP MODULE FOR MY YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL. I WAS ADVISED TO RETURN TO THE DEALER TO SEE IF IT WAS COVERED WHICH I DID. I FOUND OUT THAT MY VEHICLE DID NOT FALL UNDER THE FACTORY RECALL. I RETURNED TO MY REGULAR MECHANIC...

INITIAL SIGNS WERE A STONG SMELL OF FUEL INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE, AND LONGER CRANK TIMES WHEN STARTING. THIS WAS FILLING OUR GARAGE WITH A VERY STRONG FUEL ODOR. TOOK IT TO DEALER TO DIAGNOSE, AND THEY DETERMINED THAT THERE WAS A CRACK IN THE FUEL PUMP MODULE AND RECOMMEND REPLACING AT A COST OF $650. THE FUEL PUMP MODULE IS A PLASTIC CASE THAT SITS ON TOP OF THE FUEL TANK. IT IS NOT ACCESSABLE UNLESS YOU TAKE THE FUEL TANK OFF. WE ARE JUST FINISHING A SUMMER OF RECORD SETTING HEAT. LOOKING ONLINE IT HAS CRACKED FOR PEOPLE IN HOT CLIMATES. THERE IS A RECALL FOR A PROBLEM THAT SOUNDS VERY SIMILAR, GM RECALL NUMBER 090226.
