2022 RAM 1500 Steering Problems

I experienced a sudden loss of power steering at 75 miles per hour on the freeway. This created an immediate safety hazard. I am requesting manufacturer goodwill repair assistance and for the dealer to open a safety case

The power steering goes out while driving almost causing a crash

I own a 2022 Ram 1500 with a 5.7-liter V8 equipped with the eTorque (mild hybrid) system. On October 24, 2025, at approximately 1:30 p.m., I was driving southbound on I-25 when the battery warning light illuminated, followed by several other warning indicators on the dashboard. Shortly thereafter, the dashboard went completely dark, and I suddenly lost power steering. At that point, the truck was moving only on momentum. While I was able to brake and activate my emergency hazard lights, the vehicle eventually came to a stop on its own in a lane in the middle of the highway. Fortunately, traffic was moving slowly due to it being a Friday afternoon. This was a frightening and dangerous experience, particularly due to the sudden loss of power steering. I could have collided with another vehicle, or another vehicle could have struck me. I feared for my safety during this incident....

The contact owns a 2022 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving 70 MPH on the highway, the power steering warning light illuminated, and the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The contact pulled over to the right side of the road and waited for tow truck assistance. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the power steering module needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

While driving the steering randomly gets stiff when turning to the left. This seems to only happen while on the highway. After googling issues with this model vehicle, I found that the electronic power steering system could be the culprit. I am not sure but it makes sense. This is a big safety concern because it could cause an accident and possible life loss. I have taken this vehicle in a few times about this issue. I have even showed the dealer a few videos of the issue while it was happening, but the dealer for some reason said thy could not reproduce the problem.

Over the three years of ownership we have had four occurrences of random stalling when taking left turns, where the engine stalls out, and the emergency parking brake engages. This can easily be a life threatening occurrence as it happens in the middle of the intersection during the left turn and it takes time to confirm the car is turned off, then need to disengage the emergency brake and THEN restart the car, all while stuck in the middle of an intersection. We reported this to multiple dealerships, the one we purchased at and the ones giving us service. The Joe Ricci's Marlette Chrysler Dodge dealership ran the diagnostic test and did not find any error messages. This problem keeps occurring and needs a recall before more people our hurt and/or killed.

Lost power steering

The EPS electronic power steering failed while I was driving. At that point I couldn't turn left or right the vehicle would only go straight. Thankfully I was on a local road and was able to stop before i hit anything.

While driving the truck dashboard threw every light on, headlights went out, the truck shifted to first gear and would not shift back to higher gear, power steering went out as well. Received several trigger messages on the dashboard and was thankfully able to pull over safely. Placed the truck into park and the. Wasn’t able to place back in gear. This is the second time it has happened to me and Ram can’t figure out the cause or just doesn’t care. When researching there have been numerous other reports of this happening and Ram continues to shrug their shoulders making it the consumers problem. Second time I’m without a car and this time the dealer is claiming it will take nearly a week to even look at it while Ram says until Diagnostics there is no rental car coverage for the consumer. The electric steering in my 2022 RAM 1500 Classic pickup failed at 40,000 miles and about 2 years & 11 months after I bought it new. It went from driving fine when pulling out from our vacation rental cabin to absolutely no power assistance 1/4 mile down the long driveway out to the highway. Thank goodness I was driving slowly because I was caught totally off guard and barely stopped before I would’ve gone into the ditch and a very large tree! I immediately called the RAM dealer where I purchased the truck and was told the earliest I could get it in for service was in over 2 weeks! Steering does not work right when turn left on long left turns like exits. It is like it stick at that location and you have to give more force to come out of the turn then when you go back it start over like it back and forth on the long swiping turns. Any other time it is fine. Scary on the highway. It start when under warranty to it a couple times but the dealer could not make it happen it still happening but now out of warranty.

The electric power steering will stop working while driving. The power steering warning light will come on and spotentially causing intermittent and complete loss of power steering assist. At times I am unable to move the steering wheel and control the direction of the Ram 1500. I have had this vehicle in for repart multiple times.

While driving my vehicle at approximately 15-20 mph it unexpectedly and without warning shut down and engaged the emergency brake bringing the vehicle from 20 to 0 immediately. The vehicle the stated ignition was not put in park. I restarted the vehicle and the e brake was engaged.

The power steering goes out driving down the road. I can hit a Crack in the road and the power steering goes out, it used to come back after turning off my truck for a min. That was over a month ago now it won't turn back on.

Vehicle stalled while driving. Causing sudden loss of engine power and related functions such as power steering. Cause was do to water intrusion from rear window leaking on to a control module RF Module. The leak is common in thousands of ram trucks over several years. They’ve attempted to address it for some years but not all. Having such an important piece of equipment under a window which they know is prone to leaking is irresponsible and negligent. Had I been at higher speed this could have been deadly.

The contact stated that the failure recurred intermittently while driving. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with low voltage failure. The mechanic replaced the battery; however, the failure persisted. The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced a permanent power steering failure. The vehicle was towed to K B's Auto Lab, where it was diagnosed that the power steering control module (PSCM) had failed. The mechanic contacted the manufacturer and was informed that the vehicle could not be covered because the warranty had expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Action Number: EA19004 (Steering). The dealer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 44,000. The VIN was not available.

Due a faulty battery recharge module…My vehicle lost power steering without warning

The power steering failed while I was in motion at approximately 55 mph and is not working since . I managed to stop before I went in the ditch, but did run over at culvert and run two tires. Zero warning.

Vehicle steering began to shake violently intermittently, I pulled off the highway and began to inspect front wheels. I saw fire on left side of engine through the wheel well. I extinguished fire with hand extinguisher. Fire department inspected and saw no danger to move vehicle. Vehicle was towed. Inspection by dealer was inconclusive. (!) I would not trust it to drive. I brought vehicle into company shop and inspected myself and found starter wire routed between brackets on engine/cross member. The cable was burned/ shorted and the cause of fire and electric steering malfunction. Any further use would certainly cause another incident. Vehicle was returned to dealer for replacement of harness. Dealer stated no recalls or known issues related to this. Inspected another vehicle of same type and wire is similar routing. While driving on the freeway at speeds of approximately 65-70 mph, the vehicle unexpectedly locked the steering wheel, depriving the driver of the ability to maneuver or control the vehicle safely. It required significant effort for the driver to manually turn the wheel enough to guide the truck to the side of the freeway. This was an extremely dangerous situation, as we no longer had full control of the truck while at highway speeds. Had this occurred during a turn, the truck would have continued in a straight line, crossing into oncoming traffic. Concurrently, all lights on the dashboard began flashing while random error messages sequenced through the display, all without an apparent cause. While driving down a straight road going approximately 20 mph my truck pulled me hard to the left and I was unable to control it. The assembly for my front left wheel completely came apart, and my truck was stranded in the middle of the road, without me being able to move it forward or backwards. The dealer stated that the ball joints to the upper and lower control arms both popped out at the same time. The dealer stated that they were unsure why this happened, and that there was no damage or wear to the ball joints. The contact stated that he had to apply pressure to the steering wheel however, the steering wheel failed to retract back to the center and made it difficult to maneuver the vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified by the dealer of the failure and the contact was informed that a case would be opened but no further assistance was provided. On 4/7/23 the vehicle was taken into the shop because it cutoff randomly. The dealership kept it 2 days and said they couldn’t replicate the issue. On 5/7/23 I was on my way home driving roughly 40-45 MPH. The vehicle shutoff causing my steering to not work and my brakes to not work. I hit a telephone pole head on splitting the telephone pole in half. I spent 16 hrs in the hospital and now have a long road of recovery ahead of me.

The vehicle was then taken to the dealer for repair; however, the steering failure worsened after the initial repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but had yet to receive any assistance. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 8,900.
