2017 JEEP COMPASS Engine Problems

An independent mechanic determined that the failure was related to the drive shaft, transfer case, and driver’s side front half shaft. The local dealer was not contacted. I was approaching a stoplight and every light on the dash lit up, the car wouldn’t go after stopping and it wouldn’t turn off when put in park. I also couldn’t shift into any other gear. This is seriously dangerous and not the first time I’ve had major mechanical issues with this vehicle.

While attempting to do a U-turn on two different occiasions once the U-turn has been completed the car would stop and turn off. There was not power. Would attempt to restart the car and it would not. Needed to get a jump-start for the car to start. One other time when attempting to do a U-turn the car would act as if would stop, in this case did not but took about 2 miles before it would accelerate properly

When driving my Jeep Compass, there have been numerous instances of the vehicle stalling out when slowing down or stopping at a light/stop sign. This has happened on busy roads, at busy intersections, and on country roads. Wiring compartment under the front wheel well is completely eroded away which caused my vehicle to completely stop driving and turning on. When looking at the whole wiring harness under the wheel well, wires were completely falling out of where they connect to the fuses because of how bad the erosion is. Auto stop/start will malfunction and show a message saying to cut the car off and start it again. This poses a huge safety issue as it can cause an accident from not starting up and shutting off when it stops. Car also says “please park safely car will shut off soon”. My alternator has been checked and the aux battery and regular battery have been replaced as well so they are unable to figure out why I’m getting this message.

My Jeep was manufactured August 2016 directly after a recall for camshaft position sensory and crankshaft position sensor. For the past 3 years I have gotten a periodical check engine light for the camshaft position sensor in bank 1. Two weeks ago the engine began to stall at random times and the camshaft position sensor light came back on. I replaced it this weekend and the issue is persisting. I've checked everything else and there are no other codes that are pulling. I have had it inspected at my employment since I work for a dealership. The engine stalling on the highway is putting me and other drivers at a huge safety risk. I have almost been hit three times when it has stalled and there is nothing I can do in the middle of the road.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the throttle body was replaced but the failure reoccurred. The manufacturer was contacted, and the contact was informed that there was no recall for the failure. No additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 121,000.

While driving at highway speeds, the engine shut off and power steering is disabled. The dashboard says that the car is still on and will not restart the car. This is an EXTREEMLY dangerous situation, and my family is lucky to be alive. The problem had been reproduced by Christian Brother Automotive. They have replaced the camshaft sensor as well as the batteries and updated the firmware of the car. The issue continues to persist, and Christian Brothers will not release the car to me. No the Vehicle has not bee inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representative. No Warning lamps, messages or other symptoms presented themself prior to the problem. After about 20 minutes the car is can be restarted and will operate as normal until it automagically cuts out the next time.

Coolant temperature heating with no root cause issue. Dealership cannot diagnose. And no recalls when there are tons of people posting about this

Issues staring the car, dealership makes me buy a new battery and that’s not the problem. Still after spending money on a new battery, it’s a problem. 13.4 v and it still has issues starting. Sometimes it starts and will NOT let me leave park. I am exhausted of these issues and constantly missing work because of this car the whole point in buying a 2017 car was for it to be reliable, and instead I’m having a problem even starting it!!!!

On July 9th 2022 the car showed a low oil pressure warning then shut down going around a curve but I was able to restart the vehicle. Within a few minutes I was stopped at an intersection and the car stalled again and I was unable to restart it which resulted in my car being rear ended. I got my 2017 jeep compass in 2018 had no issues truly until about a year ago. The check engine light came on and it would jerk a little goin up hill well got a coder and it said o2 so I changed all the spark plugs and o2 and it still is on now the thunder bolt light flashes I loose power and the yellow skid mark comes on I have to turn car off let it reprogram like 10 min and it acts ok for a few min now it's so bad it won't even go 10 miles . I'm goin to have the throttle and sensor changed hopefully that fixes it.

THEY TOLD ME MY OIL LEVEL WAS 3.5 QUARTS LOW AND THAT I NEEDED TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT BECAUSE IT SHOULDN'T BE USING THAT MUCH OIL BETWEEN REGULAR OIL CHANGES. I TOOK IT TO JEEP WHERE THEY DIDN'T EVEN LOOK AT THE VEHICLE AND JUST TOLD ME THAT THIS ENGINE IS KNOWN TO BURN THAT MUCH OIL BETWEEN OIL CHANGES AND JEEP DEEMS IT AS 'ACCEPTABLE' BECAUSE THE OWNERS MANUEL STATES TO CHECK OIL LEVELS AT EVERY FILL UP AND ADD OIL AS NEEDED TO MAINTAIN A SAFE OIL LEVEL. 2ND TIME THIS HAPPENED WITHIN A MONTH. DEALER CHANGED BATTERIES 1ST TIME. COMPUTER SYSTEM RUNS THROUGH A NUMBER OF MESSAGES STATING VARIOUS SETTINGS ARE NOT WORKING. EXAMPLE: ENGINE LIGHT, AIR BAG, OIL, WITH EVERY WARNING LIGHT THERE IS. VEHICLE JUST SHUT DOWN ON A BUSY ROAD. VERY DANGEROUS. 15 MIN LATER IT STARTED BACK UP LIKE THERE WASNT A PROBLEM. THERE IS EXCESS OIL USE ALSO. CHANGED OIL, A MONTH LATER, ITS A 1/4 LOW. NO DRIPS EITHER. THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING FOR A VEHICLE THAT IS ONLY 3 YEARS OLD.

VEHICLE TRIED TO SHUT OFF - SENT VEHICLE TO GARAGE AND THEY RESET SOME CODES. SECOND TIME - VEHICLE SHUT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF AN EIGHT LANE HIGHWAY GOING 55 MPH - NO ACCIDENT. HAD TO HAVE VEHICLE TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. REPLACED MODULE IN ENGINE. THIRD TIME - VEHICLE SHUT OFF AGAIN ON A TWO LANE HIGHWAY - NO ACCIDENT. ACCORDING TO GARAGE THE VEHICLE WAS LOW ON OIL BUT NO OIL LIGHT CAME ON. READ QUITE A FEW OF THESE JEEP VEHICLES ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM.

START/STOP SYSTEM STOPPED WORKING AND THEN BURNED OUT REGULAR BATTERY, PREVENTING CAR FROM STARTING. SYSTEM CONTINUES TO OPERATE INTERMITTENTLY, STOPPING THE CAR WHEN ITS NOT FULLY WARMED UP AND OTHER TIMES NOT STOPPING THE CAR WHEN THE CAR IS FULLY WARMED UP.

CAR HAS BEEN REPEATEDLY STALLING WHEN GOING INTO A TURN OR COMING TO A STOP. LOW OIL PRESSURE LIGHT WILL FLASH AT TIMES WHILE DRIVING. STALLS AND LOW OIL PRESSURE WARNING FLASH SOMETIMES OCCUR AT THE SAME TIME, SOMETIMES DO NOT. CAR RECENTLY STALLED WHILE GOING 35MPH ON A HIGHWAY. REQUIRES STOPPING CAR, PUTTING INTO PARK, AND THEN RESTARTING, WHICH TAKES 10-15 SECONDS FOR STARTER TO GET ENGINE TO TURN OVER. WHEN AT IDLE IN PARK, THROTTLE DOES NOT RESPOND TO GAS PEDAL.

ENGINE HAS EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION WHICH CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO JUST STALL OUT. RECOMMENDED 5000 OIL CHANGES BUT DEALERS WILL SAY 3000 AND TO CHECK OIL EVERY 2 DAYS BECAUSE IT MAY NEED 4-5 QTS BETWEEN OIL CHANGES. THIS STARTED WITHIN 5 MONTHS OF DRIVING IT OFF THE SHOWROOM FLOOR. DEALER AND CHRYSLER CORP ARE AWARE OF ISSUES BUT NO FIX HAS BEEN DISCOVERED NOT DO THEY CARE. CAR STALLED 4 TIMES IN THE LAST 4 MONTHS WHILE AT STOP LIGHTS. I WAS STOPPED AT LIGHT AND WHEN I WENT TO MOVE AGAIN THE CAR STALLED-ALL PANEL LIGHTS FLASHED AND CAR WOULD NOT TURN ON AGAIN. AFTER MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS THE CAR FINALLY STARTED. AFTER THE MOST RECENT OCCURRENCE I DROVE IMMEDIATELY TO THE NEAREST MIDAS BECAUSE OI WAS AFRAID TO DRIVE IT ANY FARTHER. THEY RAN DIAGNOSTICS AND COULD NOT FIND A DEFINITIVE ANSWER. THE BATTERY WAS FINE.

CAR WILL NOT START. STARTS AND THEN SHUTS OFF. NOT BATTERY RELATED.

2 TIMES THE SAME INCIDENT OCCURRED 6 MONTHS APART, ONCE IN JUNE 2019 MILEAGE 22046 AND ONCE IN DECEMBER 2019 MILEAGE 28423. BOUGHT THE CAR BRAND NEW IN 2017. OIL IS DISSAPPEARING!! THE OIL PRESSURE LOW LIGHT WILL FLASH ON - THERE IS A LOSS OF POWER - WHILE DRIVING - NO WARNING! THEN THE LIGHT WILL GO OFF. DRIVE TO OIL CHANGE BUSINESS TO HAVE THEM CHECK THE OIL LEVEL AND THE JEEP WILL BE 3 TO 3.5 QUARTS LOW. NO LEAK PRESENT OR OIL SEEN. ENGINE SEEMS TO SLIP WHILE DRIVING BEFORE THIS HAPPENS.

ENGINE STALLS AT ANY SPEED DUE TO LOW OIL. 2.4 ENGINE HAS EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION TO THE DEGREE OF SHUTTING DOWN IN BETWEEN 5000 MILE OIL CHANGES. ENGINE HAS 30,000 MILES AND USES 3 QUARTS BETWEEN CHANGES "APPARENTLY". CHRYSLER SAYS 1 QUART PER 2000 MILES!!! ON A NEW VEHICLE, THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 JEEP COMPASS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE OIL IN HIS VEHICLE NEEDED TO BE CHANGED EVERY TWO MONTHS. IN ADDITION, THE LOW OIL WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO GANLEY CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM (LOCATED AT 310 BROADWAY AVE, BEDFORD, OH 44146, (440) 232-2121) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 51,000.

PROBLEM STARTED AROUND 43K MILEAGE. WHEN TURNING, THE "LOW OIL PRESSURE" LIGHT WOULD COME ON, THEN THE ENGINE WOULD STALL AND SOMETIMES THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WOULD ACTIVATE AND STOP THE CAR. I WOULD HAVE TO SHUT VEHICLE OFF AND THEN TURN BACK ON TO OPERATE. THIS HAPPENED ON SIDE STREETS AND ONCE ON HIGHWAY. TOOK CAR INTO GOLLING (DEALER) AND THEY SAID OIL WAS VERY LOW. I HAD JUST HAD OIL CHANGED ABOUT 3K MILES PRIOR TO THAT. DEALER TOLD ME THAT "THESE ENGINES ARE KNOWN TO BURN OIL". THEY TOLD ME TO BRING IT BACK AT 2K MILES TO HAVE THE OIL CHECKED. AT 2K MILES, THE OIL WAS LOW AGAIN AND THEY DID AN OIL CHANGE AND TOLD ME TO BRING IT BACK AT 1K MILES. I BROUGHT IT BACK AT 1K MILES THEY NEEDED TO "TOP IT OFF" AND TOLD ME TO BRING IT BACK AGAIN AT...

THE STOP/START BATTERY HAD TO BE REPLACED. WITHIN 2 MONTHS THE CAR BATTERY HAD TO BE REPLACED. THIS WAS BECAUSE THE STOP/START ENGINE DIED VARIOUS TIMES. THE CAR WOULD NOT START FOR OVER 10 MINUTES. A MONTH AFTER FIXING IT , IT STALLED AGAIN. I AM 65 YEARS OLD AND THIS IS VERY UNSAFE. I STOP AT A STOP SIGN AND START TO GO AND IT DIES. IT SEEMS THAT THE STOP/START ENGINE HAS TO BE STOPPED FOR A PERIOD OF TIME BEFORE YOU CAN GO.

VEHICLE SHUTS DOWN WHILE OPERATING. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THE DEALER SAID IT USES A QUART OF OIL EVERY 500 MILES THEREBY BY CAUSING ENGINE TO SHUT DOWN DURING OPERATION. DEALER STATED CHRYSLER IS AWARE OF PROBLEM AND NO SOLUTIONS HAVE BEEN PROVIDED YET. DEALER ALSO STATED TO GET AN OIL CHANGE EVERY 3000 MILES. THIS VEHICLE HAS 33,720 MILES AND WAS PURCHASED JUN 2017.

MY VEHICLE HAS 15562 MILES ON IT AND IS 400 MILES FROM IT'S OIL CHANGE. WHEN DRIVING VEHICLE ON NEIGHBORHOOD STREETS IT WOULD RANDOMLY STALL AND SHUT OFF CAUSING A LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND VEHICLE ACCELERATION. WHEN WE ARRIVED HOME WE DID A ONCE OVER ON THE ENGINE AND THE OIL DIP STICK WAS BONE DRY. WE CALLED OUR LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND THEY MENTIONED THAT THEY HAD SEEN SEVERAL JEEP COMPASSES WITH THE SAME ISSUE.*DT CONSUMER STATED OUR VEHICLE WAS ABOUT 300 MILES SHY OF THE 5000 MILE SUGGESTED OIL CHANGE FROM JIFFY LUBE (PER MFG'S SPEC). SO 4700 MILES SINCE PREVIOUS OIL CHANGE.*JB

I CAME DOWN A HILL IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD, STREET THEN BECAME LEVEL AND I CAME TO STOP SIGN, I STOPPED AND MY ENGINE DIED AND MY EMERGENCY BRAKE CAME ON. I HAD TO REMOVE FOOT FROM BRAKE, PUT BACK ON BRAKE, RESTART ENGINE AND THEN I COULD DISENGAGE EMERGENCY BRAKE. DEALER IS TELLING ME THIS BECAUSE IT WAS LOW ON OIL. BUT I WASN'T EVEN DUE FOR A FEW HUNDRED MILES FOR AN OIL CHANGE.

ON SATURDAY, 10/5/19 WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE FOR ONLY A MINUTE AND MAKING A RIGHT TURN, THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON (OIL PRESSURE LOW) AND THEN TURNED OFF. I THEN STOPPED MY VEHICLE AND WAITED ABOUT AN HOUR BEFORE CHECKING THE OIL AND IT WAS DOWN ALMOST 2 1/2 QUARTS. THIS IS ONLY AFTER APPROXIMATELY 3,200 MILES SINCE THE LAST OIL CHANGE. I WENT T TO JEEP SERVICE IN GARDEN CITY, NY FIRST THING MONDAY MORNING AND WAS TOLD BY 2 DIFFERENT SERVICE WORKERS THAT IT IS NORMAL TO BURN THROUGH A QUART OF OIL EVERY 1500 MILES. * THIS IS NOT NORMAL*

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO JAMES CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM (13007 WICKER AVE, CEDAR LAKE, IN 46303, (219) 267-1226) WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS TESTED FOR OIL CONSUMPTION EVERY 500 MILES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 21,008. *BF*JB
