TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, A LOUD KNOCKING SOUND WAS HEARD COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS A LOOSE ROD IN THE STEERING COLUMN. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 148,000.
MY 2012 HYUNDAI SONATA STEERING WHEEL MAKES CLUNKING NOISE WHEN IT IS TURNED. THE STEERING WHEEL ALSO RATTLES WHEN THE CAR IS GOING AT HIGH SPEED OR GOING OVER ROUGHER SURFACE. THIS WAS REPORTED BY THE PREVIOUS OWNER OF THE VEHICLE ALSO AND IT APPEARS TO BE GETTING WORSE.
STEERING WHEEL IS LOOSE, VIBRATES, CLICKS, VERY LOOSE STEERING, NOT GOOD CONTROL SEEMS THE STEERING WHEEL IS DEFECTIVE SOMEHOW BECAUSE THERE IS A LOT OF PLAY IN THE STEERING WETHER DRIVING STRAIGHT OR TURNING
STEERING WHEEL HAS PLAN, SHAKES AND MAKES LOUD NOISES WHEN DRIVING ON BUMPY HYWAYS AND CAUSES MANY STEERING CORRECTIONS WHILD DRIVING
ON 9/29/2016, I REPORTED AN ISSUE TO THE DEALERSHIP (JIM BURKE AUTOMOTIVE) WITH THE STEERING MAKING A LOUD THUMP WHEN TURNING (SLIGHTLY). THE SERVICE PERSON REPORTED "CAR NEEDS MDPS COUPLING" AND THE CHARGE WOULD BE $350(!). I EXPRESSED A CONCERN THAT THIS WAS NOT A RECALL OR COVERED BY THE MANUFACTURER. I BELIEVE IT TO BE A SAFETY ISSUE. I'VE SEEN MANY POSTINGS ON THE INTERNET ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND THAT THE PART INVOLVED HAS BEEN REDESIGNED 2 OR 3 TIMES. ADDITIONALLY, A RESPECTED LOCAL REPAIR (ROBE MANNS) REFUSED TO MAKE THE REPAIR AND THAT I SHOULD TAKE IT TO THE DEALER FOR WARRANTY REPAIR. I ALSO UNDERSTAND (ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURER) THAT THE REPAIR WOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED IF THE CAR HAD UNDER 50,000 MILES. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE ISSUE STARTS WELL BEFORE 50,000 MILES BUT DOES NOT SEEM SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE IT IS SO SUBTLE. I ALSO UNDERSTAND...
STEERING WHEEL WOULD MAKE A CLACKING NOISE WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL WAS TURNED OR WHEN GOING OVER BUMPS IN THE ROAD. THE SPEED OF THE VEHICLE DID NOT MATTER. AN AUDIBLE CLICK COULD BE HEARD WHEN THE WHEEL WAS TURNED TO THE RIGHT. WHEN THE CAR WENT OVER ANY SPEED BUMPS OR POT HOLES, A CLACKING NOISE COULD BE HEARD FROM INSIDE THE STEERING WHEEL. TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND FOUND THAT THE STEERING COUPLER WAS COMPLETELY WORN DOWN. IT STARTED VERY SUBTLY FOR A FEW MONTHS, BUT THEN WITHIN A MONTH, WOULD MAKE NOISE WITH EVEN THE SLIGHTEST MOVEMENTS OR BUMPS.
MY HYUNDAI SONATA HAS HAD A REALLY LOUD AND ANNOYING RATTLING SOUND COMING FROM THE STEERING WHEEL SINCE MAYBE LAST YEAR. IT STARTED OUT LITTLE TO NO NOISE AT ALL AND NOW ALMOST A YEAR LATER, EVEN DRIVING CAUSES IT TO RATTLE. IF I HIT A BUMP, IT'S SO LOUD THAT IT SCARES MY PASSENGERS. I HAVE ALSO NOTICED THAT I AM UNABLE TO, AT VERY RANDOM TIMES, KEEP CONTROL OF STEERING FOR A SECOND OR TWO. THIS IS GETTING TOO DANGEROUS FOR MY COMFORT! I HAVE CALLED HYUNDAI ON THIS AND THEY HAVE TOLD ME THAT THIS ISSUE IS WITH THE STEERING COLUMN AND THAT IT IS A RECALL ITEM FOR 2011. THIS SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO 2012 AS WELL. I AM THE OWNER OF A 2012 HYUNDAI SONATA 2.0T. WE'VE HAD THE VEHICLE FOR ALMOST FIVE YEARS, AND ABOUT SIX MONTHS AGO, WE STARTING NOTICING A "CLICKING" SOUND IN THE STEERING WHEEL COLUMN. APPARENTLY IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH A PLASTIC SPIDER GEAR AND DEALERSHIP WANTS $489 TO REPLACE. CAR COULD LOSE STEERING CONTROL. THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS FROM THE VERY BEGINNING. AS WELL AS THE HORRIBLE TICKING (CYLINDERS NOT INJECTORS!) MAINLY AT FIRST WAS THE RADIO WOULD GO OUT. THE STEERING WHEEL COLUMN MAKES A LOUD CLICKING NOISE WHEN YOU TURN IT TO THE LEFT AND TO THE RIGHT. WHEN YOU TRAVEL OVER 50 MPH THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKES VIOLENTLY AND MAKES A LOUD NOISE. A SIMPLE GOOGLE SEARCH TURNED UP THE PROBLEM IS EXTREMELY COMMON WITH SONATAS AND IS THIS LITTLE THREE DOLLAR PLASTIC WHEEL THAT APPARENTLY GRINDS UP AND FALLS APART. THE DEALERSHIP STILL WANTED $120 TO DIAGNOSE WAS WAS WRONG DESPITE ME TELLING THEM AND THEN WANTED $360 TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE CAR HAS ONLY 49,000 MILES ON IT BUT IS FOUR MONTHS OUTSIDE WARRANTY. THE DEALERSHIP DID AGREE TO SELL ME THE THREE DOLLAR PLASTIC WHEEL THING BUT WHEN I ASKED IF THEY MADE ONE OUT OF METAL OR SOMETHING THAT WON'T BREAK THEY APPARENTLY DO NOT. I...

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN INTERMEDIATE SHAFT UNIVERSAL JOINT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 45,200.

AT 61080 MILES, THE STEERING WHEEL WAS MAKING A KNOCKING SOUND WHILE TURNING RIGHT OR LEFT WITH EXCESSIVE PLAY IN THE STEERING AFFECTING STEERING CONTROL. THE EVENT WAS SUDDEN AND THERE WAS NO PRIOR INDICATION OF A PROBLEM. HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE FLEXIBLE COUPLING (PN 56315-2K000-FFF) TO CORRECT THE ISSUE CAUSED BY THE COUPLER THEY DESCRIBED AS "WORN OUT". REPLACEMENT OF THE COUPLER IS NOT IDENTIFIED BY HYUNDAI AS A SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE ITEM. TOTAL REPLACEMENT COST WAS $321.39

THE FAILURE WAS NOTICED AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V568000 (ENGINE). THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR, AND WAS NO FAULT OF THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 87,000.
I'M HEARING CLICKING IN STEERING WHEELS , IT FEELS AS THOUGH THE STEERING WILL FALL OFF. I WAS TOLD I NEED STEERING COUPLER REPLACEMENT

AFTER SOME RESEARCH I FOUND THAT THE $3.00 STEERING COUPLER IS FAILING WHICH WILL LEAD TO THE TOTAL LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST. THIS STARTED AT 82,000 MILES. I CONTACTED THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WOULD COST $276 TO REPLACE THE PART. BECAUSE THIS PART IS MADE OF RUBBER AND HAS A HIGH FAILURE RATE I DO NOT KNOW WHY A SAFETY RECALL HAS NOT BEEN ISSUED. THE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD NOT BE SOMETHING THAT THE DEALERSHIPS CAN USE TO EXPLOIT THE CONSUMER. *TR
I OWN SONATA 2012 GLS WITH CURRENT MILEAGE APPROX. 41000. I GET SOME NOISE EVERY TIME I TURN THE CAR LEFT OR RIGHT. WHEN I INQUIRED TO THE DEALER TO GET IT FIXED, THEY SAID IT WAS A COUPLING ON THE STEERING COLUMN AND WHICH SEEMS TO BE COMMON WITH SONATAS MANUFACTURED BETWEEN 2011-13. I HAVE TO PAY FEW HUNDREDS TO GET THIS FIXED BEFORE WINTER APPROACHES ELSE IT WILL GET WORSE. IF THIS IS COMMON IN SONATAS, WHY HYUNDAI HASN'T RECALLED THEM YET. I DO NOT THINK ANY OTHER CAR, WHICH IS UNDER 45000 MILES EXPERIENCING THIS KIND OF PROBLEM. I AM VERY MUCH UPSET WITH HYUNDAI.

THAT IS RIDICULOUS, BECAUSE I HAVE HAD SEVERAL VEHICLES OVER YEARS, SOME WITH OVER 200,000 MILES ON THEM AND HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS. I HAD TO BITE THE BULLET AND PAY THE PRICE TO GET IT FIXED BECAUSE OF HOW DANGEROUS IT FELT DRIVING, AS IF AT ANY MOMENT I COULD HAVE LOST CONTROL, CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. HYUNDAI APPARENTLY KNOWS THIS IS AN ISSUE AS THIS SHOP HAD TO WAIT AS THE PART WAS SERIOUSLY BACK ORDERED. FORTUNATELY THEY ORDERED EXTRAS AS THE OWNERS MOTHER HAS THE SAME VEHICLE. JUST WAITING FOR HERS TO FALL APART. HE ALSO SHOWED ME THE NEW PART(COG WHEEL) AD AN OLD CHEWED UP ONE OFF A REPAIR. HYUNDAI NEEDS TO ISSUE A RECALL AND REIMBURSE ALL WHO HAVE PAID FOR THE REPAIR.

STARTING APPROXIMATELY 4-5 MONTHS AGO, MY STEERING STARTED RATTLING AND SHAKING WHEN THE CAR HITS BUMPS OR WHEN GOING HIGHER SPEEDS, SUCH AS ON THE INTERSTATE. IT HAS GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. CLUNKING SOUND CAUSED BY THE STEERING COLUMN COUPLER WHEN TURNING OR GOING OVER BUMPS ON A CITY STREET. STEERING IS WIGGLING ITSELF AND LOOSE.
THE FIRST ISSUE IS THAT MY CAR WILL NOT START SOMETIMES. THEN AFTER A MINUTE OR TWO IT WILL START. I HAVE THE PUSH BUTTON TO START MY CAR. IT IS BEGINNING TO HAPPEN MORE OFTEN IN THE LAST 6 WEEKS. THE SECOND ISSUE IS THAT MY STEERING WHEEL IS MAKING A CLICKING NOISE WHEN I TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME.
WHILE DRIVING MY 2012 SONATA (PURCHASED AT FREEMAN HYUNDAI IN IRVING, TX) IT STARTED TO HAVE LOOSE STEERING THEN STARTED TO HESITATE FREQUENTLY. STARTED HEARING A KNOCKING NOISE IN THE STEERING COLUMN WHILE TURNING. THE STEERING WHEEL LITERALLY FEELS LIKE IT IS GOING TO FALL OFF IN MY LAP. I INITIALLY THOUGHT MY TIE RODS HAD ALREADY WORN OUT ON THE VEHICLE. I TOOK IT IN TO HAVE THE TIE RODS REPLACED TO FIND OUT IT IS IN MY STEERING COLUMN. IT SEEMS AS IF A BOX IN THE STEERING COLUMN IS LOOSE OR BAD AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD I AM GOING TO LOSE THE STEERING SHAFT IF...
ON AUGUST 06, 2016 I DISCOVERED A NOISE EMITTING FROM MY STEERING WHEEL. ON MONDAY AUGUST 08, 2016 I WENT TO MY HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP FOR AN OPINION. THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN/WRITER INFORMED ME THAT THERE IS A RUBBER BUSHING IN THE STEERING WHEEL COUPLER HAS STARTED TO SHOW SIGN OF DETERIORATION. THIS MUST BE REPLACED AT THE EARLIEST OPPORTUNITY. FAILURE TO DO SO IN A TIMELY MANNER WILL RENDER THE STEERING UNUSABLE. FAILURE OF STEERING CONTROL WILL CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. SUCH ACCIDENT WILL CAUSE BODILY INJURY AND OR DEATH.
