It first started when the engine needed to be replaced, I spent thousands trying to get it repaired, soon after they fixed the engine everything started going wrong ( I truly think they put in a faulty or wrong engine @ Hyundai) the car was overheating, I would take it in they would say it’s one thing pay thousands and it wasn’t it, changed the coolant that goes into the cabin, there’s always been a chemical smell since…still overheats, they said maybe it’s the thermostat, spent more money still didn’t fix it, the battery now won’t stay charged(trunk battery) not sure if they hooked it up wrong…the seatbelt hasn’t worked in years, I take it in they say it’s fine, it never clicks, I have to click it in to the passenger seat for safety. They always say it’s fine! I will never ever buy another Hyundai in life due...
On [XXX] at approximately [XXX], my [XXX] Daughter was using my car to go to work. When she called us and informed my husband that the car did not start. At that point he asked to video call him so that he can visually see what was going on. She was directed to turn on the car again at and that point, the car started then smoke was noticed from coming out of the hood. My daughter managed to open the hood where flames emerged from the center of the engine. She then ran in the house to get a fire extinguisher and managed to put it out and it reignited. She then made a second attempt with another fire extinguisher where it briefly subsided and then grew larger. At that point the fire dept arrived and successfully extinguished the fire and deemed the car totaled after the Fire Marshall...
Unknown Cought fire under the hood was engulfed within minutes
When driving. Slow down to turn or to use round about car goes into EV. When i go to accelerate the gas motor will not re engage and the hybrid alarm system will go off. I lose all power to go any where. I have to pull over shut my car off give it a min then restart so the motor will come back on so i can drive again. I have to do this mulitple time in a 20 mile drive.
I’ve been having issues with my Gas Gauge not recognizing how much gas I have in my car. I can fill my tank up, and the gas light constantly stays on. I’ve been looking online and came across other Hyundai owners having the same problem. I also have been having what seems to be an electrical issue where my passenger door, does not open and it’s intermittent which also seems to be connected to why my car ceiling light won’t turn on all the time. Lastly, I have to constantly change the head light bulbs and the break light bulb. I’ve owned my car for 3 1/2 years now, and I shouldn’t have to keep having to put money into it when it seems to be a known issue.
I own a 2012 Hyundai sonata with 114000 miles on it. I have had it since 62000 miles and have replaced a lot of parts to keep it running well. My current issue is the hybrid charging system warning light comes on and the hybrid system will stop working when it does this. It has already left me stuck on the side of the road once. When it did this the car stoped running at a stop sign. Luckily I was able to get car off the road. It shows the pull over hybrid charging system error. So i have tried replacing the battery , replacing the main battery fuse on the 12 volt battery and replacing the orange hybrid battery main fuse. The car still does not function properly and have had it diagnosed with a professional shop and they could not resolve the problem.
On July 8th 2024 I was driving my already troubled 2012 Hyundai Sonata when I started to smell strong odor of unburnt gasoline which immediately had my red flags go up, I safely pulled off the roadway and opened the hood and the fumes got stronger and stronger, I removed the plastic top engine cover to discover the foam on the underside of the plastic cover was sopping wet with gasoline, and witnessed what appears to be some sort of line or horse carrying fuel to the high pressure fuel pump squirting out gasoline right on to the hot manifold which immediately panicked me and i put tue plastic engine cover back over the top of the squirting fuel line. It comes directly off of the front of the fuel pump with a quick connect plastic hose that seems to have become brittle from the constant heat cool cycles of...

On the morning of April 15, 2024, at around 6 a.m., our 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid unexpectedly caught fire and exploded in front of our house. This incident occurred shortly after I started the car and left it to warm up. Smoke and flames emerged from under the hood, quickly escalating until the front of the vehicle exploded, shattering the windows and extensively damaging the driver and passenger sides. Previously, we had noticed a fuel odor emanating from the hood, which we suspected was related to a known fuel recall issue. We brought the vehicle to the manufacturer's attention, hoping for a resolution under the recall. Unfortunately, the manufacturer did not address the fuel smell as part of the recall services and instead billed us for unrelated repairs. Approx one year post engine replacement, and 2 weeks prior turbo system replacement, I am having major issues with my sonatait struggles to stay started, it always hesitates and doesn't want to move when I press accelerator, shakes jolts and shudders, the smell of burning oil comes thru the vents and even smoke comes out from under the vehicle. The engine is leaking masses amounts of oil that seem to be leaking from all over the under carriage and half way to the back underneath the car, oil is in the wheel wells, and even splashed on the rims, the spark plugs are covered in oil, huge plums of white and dark smoke come out of the tailpipes, literally blinding anyone behind me, press the accelerator to the floor and it just shudders and smokes even more, check engine light is on and states malfunctioning turbo system, boost pressure sensor...
my sonata 2012 the engine was replaced it seized up on the highway. since then ive had multiple issues; 1. my brake pedal seems to get pulled to the floor all the way at random times i have to pump the brake for it to release itself. 2. ive replaced the purge valve 3 going on 4 times as well as the cadilac converter due to it being clogged. 3. my car is so loud it makes a hissing noise and a winding sound people say its my transmission going out but no one can pinpoint the problem. 4. my brake lights and head lights go out all the time been replaced bout 100 times. lights on the dash r on; airbag, check engine tire pressure . please i need my vehicle looked over by a professional and or help replacing these issues ASAP
Illumination of the malfunction indicator lamp and/or ABS (Anti-lock brake system) light. My 2012 Sonata Hybrid has been towed twice to Key Hyundai dealer in Jacksonville, FL. They charged me several thousand dollars and the vehicle ABS lamp remains illuminated. The dealership did not offer me alternative transportation and I feel unsafe driving the vehicle. On Friday November 12th they blamed the brake lamp illumination on the Hybrid main battery and gave me an estimate of $12,900.00 to replace the battery. The first time I took the vehicle in for this problem my vehicle was still under 10 year/100,000 mile warranty. My car has approximately only 35,000 miles driven. They did not honor the warranty. This is a brake issue not a battery issue.
Steering has a clunking/clicking sound when turning left or right. It has gotten worse from when I noticed it. At first I could hear a faint rattling sound when going over bumps in the road (more noticeable in colder time of the year). Now for the past 2-3 years it’s very noticeable and makes clunking like noise every time turning even when parked. When I first heard the faint noise my mechanic couldn’t hear it. He said I have to hear it to know for sure but said it’s possibly the steering column And at that time he priced it at $500 I’m sure it’s more now with this economy. I didn’t get it fixed bc he wasn’t sure and I didn’t want to pay to get it fixed if that wasn’t the problem. I had no idea I could file this complaint otherwise I would have done it sooner!...
When decelerating, the vehicle will have a hard down shift or it feels like it accelerates with your foot on the brake after a hard downshift. Once you have come to a complete stop and you accelerate into traffic, it bogs down and does not move forward. It is dangerous to merge into traffic on a city street or in the highway. Our mechanic and the dealer cannot find anything. It is not predictable but it is dangerous to drive.
There was a complaint on your site that is exactly what happened to my car. While driving with foot on accelerator, acceleration/ current speed will randomly just stop. 1-1- Once i fully release the accelerator and then reengage the accelerator problem goes away. This is very random as to when it happens, and will happen multiple times in a row some times... and other times happens once and doesn't the rest of the trip. Safety is put at risk. There's only 38,000 miles on this vehicle. My mechanic can't find it because it's not doing it. The engine light doesn't come on and neither does a code. It does this on a freeway and the streets. This is extremely scary and dangerous.
The VIN number for this car is [XXX]. "Check engine" light was on and the car could not pass the inspection. We took the car to the mechanics and they found out " leak from fuel pump module" (please refer to the mechanics report for details) . Due to the safety concern, we have to fix it right away out of our own pocket. This particular VIN number is not included in the MHTSA ID: 18V934000. Daughter was driving her car on interstate, doing 75, in the middle of traffic when the car would jerk and then loose power. The gas petal stopped working and the check engine light would come on. She had to make her way over to the shoulder, without causing an accident. Once car gets shut off and you wait a few minutes, you can start it and drive it home. This has happened about 4 times now. We are lucky that this hasn't caused an accident! This last time (yesterday), the check engine light stayed on and we were able to hook up the dianostic reader and it read the code for the crankshaft positioning sensor A circut. It says online that this is a common problem with that car and is very dangerous. How is this not up for a recall? My daughter is scared to drive her car.
I recently purchased a Hyundai Sonata hybrid with 132K miles on it and it has been driving fine for at least two weeks until a few days back the car has been displaying a recurring alarm on the dashboard telling " hybrid system warming! Safely Stop and Do Not Drive " now as soon as I turn on the vehicle the alarm comes on immediately. It's been a week since the car is technically inoperable because if I attempt to drive the car it makes this horrible grinding sound which is terrifying considering if I drive like this it would probably cause more damage to the car, and I have look for information on this issue and have found many of these cases over the years that I can relate to but unfortunately there's no a recall of this problem. When I start the vehicle in the morning I leave the neighborhood going around 15mph and the car loses power. I have to let off the gas completely then reapply but it still continues to studder. I applied the slapstick sift mode and noticed it does this in first and fourth gear. In automatic you can’t see it
I purchased the car 9/1/21. 4 months ago I repaired an issue with the fuel pump and fuel rail. Now it's doing the same thing. Code P0087. I looked up to see if there were any recalls and there aren't any OPEN recalls; however the recall #180 is the issue I am having with my car. Would this be covered under the #180 recall?
Vehicle caught on Fire.
The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. The contact stated that once car has warmed up, while driving at low speed or starting to move after a stop, she vehicle hesitated and stalled while depressing the accelerator pedal. This is a serious risk hazard as the car barely moves at intersections where it is a risk of getting hit by incoming cars. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to multiple independent mechanics as well as hyundai dealerships who were all unable to diagnose the failure due to no warning lights illuminating on the instrument panel and no codes getting registered in the ECU. The contact then got the car evaluated by another Hyundai dealership in order to exchange it for a new vehicle and mentioned this problem. This time the dealership mechanics claimed to have seen this same problem at several occasion and...
About 1 month after I bought this vehicle, late December 2021, a warning light came on the hybrid screen, it read "Hybrid System Warning! Safely Stop And Do Not Drive!" The accelerator was not working I pulled over and turned the vehicle off. I waited a couple minutes and restarted it up again and went on my merry way. About a month later it happened again!! It's happened about every 5 weeks until June 16th at about 5pm, it now permanently chimes and beeps with the Hybrid screen warning me of the same, my foot brake goes to the bottom and makes a grinding noise. I am not able to drive it more than 100 yards or so then the accelerator fails again. Original Report: 1/28/22 to HyundaiUSA Problem with car started day after alignment. First noticed (while going up driveway) pressing accelerator did nothing - press again then OK. Got out to open gate, noticed brake lights on. Later (after dark), came out and brake lights on. Driving home noticed ESC light on - ESC off button had no effect. I found this exact description on "CarComplaints.com" from 2019 and it references recall #136. Next day I cranked the car, and the "ESC off" indicator came on. I was then able to turn off with the ESC off button. Update: 1/29/22 Next day same issue with brake light. Able to reset ESC light but it came back on after driving about 15 miles. The car hesitates when excelerating. The car has had this problem since I purchased the vehicle. I have reported to the Hyuandai dealership within in a few days of purchasing it. They told me it was normal. It has been in and out of the dealership many times and they finally told me ithey installed the knock sensor device which helped for a short time but it’s gotten worse. It hesitates so bad at times I almost got struck from the side because my car got stuck in the middle of the road because it wouldn’t go.
The cars engine burn oil very quickly and runs improperly. The car jerks when attempting to accelerate normally and deaccelerates when driving at normal speeds which can cause an accident with ongoing traffic.
I started the car and immediately got a chiming sound with an error message "hybrid system warning! Safety stop and do not drive" brake light also came on. I put the in drive and Car would not accelerate past 15 mph and the brakes did not engage. I turned the car off and the message reset. Same issue occured about a month ago but the dealership could not replicate the problem.
I WAS IN MOTION ON THE INTERSTATE AND SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT POPPED ON AND IT WAS TOLD IT ENDED UP BEING THE CAMSHAFT. THE VEHICLE HAD A DEAD BATTERY AND THE DEALER DID SOME OTHER WORK ON THE VEHICLE INCLUDING A TUNE UP AND FUEL INDUCTION AND REPLACED A LEAKING VALVE COVER GASKET .THE COST WAS $1009.01 THE REPAIRS WERE DONE UNDER THE NAME OF [XXX] ,THE ORIGINAL OWNER. THEY INSPECTED MY VEHICLE AND SAID IT WAS FINE . BUT EVERY SO OFTEN I KEPT SMELLING GAS INSIDE MY CAR BUT NO ENGINE LIGHT OR ANY LIGHT TURNED ON AND PLUS I THOUGHT IT WAS FINE SINCE HYUNDAI INSPECTED MY CAR BUT FEBRUARY 4, 2021 I WAS PARKED WITH MY VEHICLE RUNNING AND THE FUEL SMELL STARTED GETTING WORSE , ENTERING MY VEHICLE THROUGH THE AIR VENT. I HAD A VERY SCARY INCIDENT FRIDAY NIGHT, 12/18/20 ABOUT 8:30PM. MY ENGINE THREW A ROD AT APPROX. 85000 MILES (10/2019). HYUNDAI REPLACED THE SHORT BLOCK BUT SINCE THEN I CONTINUE TO HAVE ISSUES WITH MY CAR. AFTER THEY REPLACED THE SHORT BLOCK AND I PICKED MY CAR UP, THE CAR SEEMED TO BE RUNNING LIKE IT IS NOT GETTING CONSISTENT FUEL LIKE IT IS SUPPOSED TO. I HAVE HAD IT IN THE SHOP 4 TIMES BECAUSE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS COME ON. MY CAR BROKE DOWN ON A BUSY HIGHWAY DURING A LUNCH RUSH DUE TO AN ENGINE ROD KNOCKING IN THE ENGINE. IT WAS A TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE AND EVEN SITTING STILL ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD I WAS SCARED MY CAR WOULD BE HIT BY ANY OF THE 70-80MPH CARS EXITING THE RAMP BEHIND ME. I TRIED JOINING THE CLASS ACTION SUIT BUT FOR SOME REASON, EVEN THOUGH IT'S THE SAME ENGINE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM, HYBRIDS AREN'T A PART OF THE SUIT.
MY CAR STALLS, LAGS AND SHUTS OFF WHILE DRIVING AND HAS A STRONG SCENT OF EXHAUST AND USES AN AWFUL AMOUNT OF OIL BUT THERE ARE NO VISIBLE OIL LEAKS. THERE ARE NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS ON. HEAD LIGHTS AND TAIL LIGHTS CONSISTENTLY BURN OUT, REAR TAIL LAMPS CAUSED MELTING OF THE ASSEMBLY ON BOTH SIDES NEAR WHERE THE SOCKET GOES. RECTIFIED REAR LAMP ISSUE USING LOWER WATTAGE LEDS, NOT A SOLUTION FOR THIS BUT A BAND AID. CAR AUTOMATIC LOCKS HAVE CEASED WORKING, FAN ASSEMBLY CUT ON AND OFF CAUSING FAILURE OF RADIATOR. BUTTONS ON STEERING WHEEL ACTIVATE WRONG SETTINGS OFTEN WHEN USED. HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP STOPPED FUNCTIONING, ONLY LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM REMAINS. ALL PROBLEMS LISTED HAPPEN INTERMITTENTLY EITHER MOVING OR STATIONARY.

I HAD A RECALL DONE ON MY HYUNDAI SONATA 2012 FOR THE FUEL PIPE. I TOOK IT IN TO THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP IN RICHLAND HILLS ABOUT A YEAR AGO, BEFORE COVID19 I BELIEVE BECAUSE I DON'T RECALL WEARING A MASK. THEY WERE EXTREMELY RUDE TO ME AT THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP SO I LEFT THERE WITHOUT KNOWING IF THERE WAS A PROBLEM OR NOT WITH MY CAR. NOW A FEW MONTHS AGO I RECEIVED ANOTHER RECALL FOR THE SAME ISSUE AN THEY SAID MY FUEL PIPE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED BUT AREN'T HONORING THE RECALL AND ARE SAYING I MUST PAY FOR THE FUEL PIPE MYSELF.
HAVING PURCHASED THE AFOREMENTIONED VIN LAST MONTH, THE BREAK LIGHTS STAY ON EVEN THO THE CAR IS OFF, THUS DRAINING THE BATTERY. WITH A HEIGHTENED FEAR OF BEING REAR-ENDED, OR WORSE, FOR THE NOW WE DISCONNECT THE BATTERY CABLE. THIS WEEK MY VEHICLE EXPERIENCED A FUEL LINE CRACK WHERE THE LOW PRESSURE FUEL PUMP CONNECTS TO THE DIRECT INJECTION FUEL PUMP. THE SMELL OF GAS WAS EVIDENT WITHIN THE CABIN WHILE BOTH STATIONARY AND IN MOTION, AND I COULD SEE VAPOR RISING FROM THE PROXIMAL PORTION OF THE HOOD WHILE SITTING IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT. THE GAS LEAK COULD BE VISUALIZED UPON STARTING THE CAR. UPON OPENING THE HOOD, I NOTED THE GAS LEAK AROUND THE CRACKED PLASTIC CONNECTION. THE FUEL LINE WAS THE ORIGINAL GENUINE HYUNDAI PART. THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP REPLACED IT WITH A SUPERIOR (NON-PLASTIC) FUEL LINE. THE LACK OF QUALITY IN THE ORIGINAL FUEL LINE IS CONCERNING BECAUSE IT PLACED MY FAMILY DIRECTLY AT RISK TO EXPERIENCE A DANGEROUS AND POSSIBLY FATAL FIRE. CONSUMER STATED EVERY TIME I FILL UP MY GAS TANK ON MY SONATA THE DASH BOARD INDICATES THAT I HAVE ZERO GAS AVAILABLE THIS CAUSED MY CHECK ENGINE TO COME ON ITS IS A CONCERN BECAUSE I BELIEVE IT CAN CAUSE AND ACCIDENT ON THE ROAD OR THE CAR CAN CATCH ON FIRE THIS SITUATION HAPPENS ALL THE TIME WHEN THE CAR IS IN MOTION AND WHEN I START IT AS WELL.*JB
I AM CONTACTING YOU REGARDING THE FOLLOWING RECALLS, PART 573 SAFETY RECALL REPORT 17V-226 AND 15V-568 AFTER VISITING HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP TWICE, MY CAR STILL HAS KNOCKING NOISE FROM THE ENGINE, AND THE LAST MONTH MY CAR ENGINE CAUGHT FIRE
VEHICLE GAVE A WARNING THAT THE HYBRID SYSTEM FAILED AND TO SAFELY LEAVE THE ROAD AND STOP DRIVING. THERE WAS NO SHOULDER AND BEFORE I COULD LEAVE THE ROADWAY, THE VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER. NOT EVEN ENOUGH POWER FOR HAZARD LIGHTS.
I HAD TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A CLOCK SPRING RECALL. I PICKED THE VEHICLE UP AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON. I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY INFORMED BY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS CAUSED BY THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILURE. THIS SEEMS TO BE A KNOW PROBLEM WITH THIS MAKE/MODEL/YR VEHICLE.
I TOOK IT TO THE SHOP AND THEY SAID IT MAY BE WHEEL ALIGNMENT OR BALL POINT WHEN STEERING. I TOOK IT FOR A 2ND OPINION, AND THE SAME THING WAS STATED. I CALLED MY INSURANCE GEICO, AND THEY TOLD ME THER WAS A RECALL.
WAS DRIVING ON MAJOR STREET WITH NO WARNING THE VEHICLE DIED IN THE MIDDLE OF A MAJOR INTERSECTION. WE TRIED TO START THE VEHICLE AGAIN WITH NO LUCK. GAS HAND SHOWED WE HAD GAS IN THE VEHICLE, SO DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THE CAR STALLED AND WOULD NOT START AGAIN. VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED HOME. NOT SURE IF THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ON THE FUEL SYSTEM, HOWEVER THIS WAS A VERY SCARY AND DANGEROUS SITUATION. STALLED VEHICLE HAD TRAFFIC BACK UP ON VERY BUSY OVERPASS INTERSECTION. UNKNOWN TO WHAT HAPPEN NOR WHY IT HAPPEN
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN, IT EXPERIENCED REDUCED ENGINE POWER WITHOUT WARNING AND A KNOCKING NOISE WAS HEARD. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER AND THE ENGINE SEIZED, RENDERING THE VEHICLE UNABLE TO BE DRIVEN. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S HOME. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBERS: 18V934000 (ENGINE, FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE) AND 15V568000 (ENGINE); ALTHOUGH, IT EXHIBITED THE SAME FAILURES LISTED IN THE RECALL CAMPAIGNS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 134,139.
THE FUEL GAUGE HAS STOPPED WORKING CORRECTLY, IT JUMPS ALL AROUND IN MILEAGE. HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH IS IN THE GAS TANK. HAVE TO FILL AFTER I GO 300 OR SO MILES JUST TO BE SAFE. THE FUEL MILEAGE INDICATOR WILL GO FROM HIGH 360 TO 47 MILES LEFT AND EVERYWHERE IN BETWEEN, THE CAR CAN BE SITTING AT A STOP LIGHT OR MOVING, MAKES NO DIFFERENCE
