2017 FORD FUSION Power Train Problems

The Shifter Cable Bushing disintegrated on my 2017 Ford Fusion, causing it to not shift into drive while parking my car. This did not result in damage or an accident, but the car was stuck in gear, and I could not move the car. I was told there is no recall for my car on this, but there is on others. I had to get it repaired at my own cost. The issue could cause more problems with similar cars like mine. A warning on my dash told me there was a problem with the shifter mechanism and that the car wasn't in gear. If the car had been in neutral at the time of the problem, it could have rolled away, with me thinking that the car was in park.

On 12/08/2022, my 2017 Ford Fusion started as normal in a busy parking lot, but once I idled/moved just a little, it became locked as if the emergency brake was on (it was not) and would not shift out of park, regardless of trying to put in neutral, reverse, etc. (It would show N or R on the dash, but remained deadlocked in Park.) There was this error message: "SHIFT SYS FAULT Service Required." It took several people to push the car to a safe area out of the way of traffic. Had to have the car towed at owner's expense to the closest Ford dealership. There were not other messages or signs of the problem prior to this failure on 12/08/2022. Ford dealer on 12/10/2022 removed and replaced transmission shifter cable bushing and installed cap. Ford dealer agreed that most certainly, this 2017 Ford Fusion has the EXACT same...

The problem is in the gear shifting. The problem is the same problem many others are having on 2017, but are not included in the recall. The recall is Fords number for this recall is 18S08. Several hundreds have filed a complaint but Ford will not expand the recall to include the 2017. This is a safety issue that needs to be addressed by Ford and NHTSA. The current recall effected 650,000 cars but not the 2017 Ford Fusion.

When putting my car in park, I received a warning "SHIFT SYS FAULT" Confirm Park Brake Apply Before Exiting the Vehicle. My parking brake was never on. When I got back in my vehicle, my gear shift would not let me take put my vehicle into gear. I googled and found it was the gear shift bushing and there was a recall on this part. I was able to take my vehicle to the repair shop and told them there was a recall. They informed me the recall was not for my vehicle because the recall was for automatic transmissions on 2016 and before. How can this exact same part be a recall on an automatic vehicle, but not on an electronic "dial" gear shift?

Car wouldn’t shift to park!

The transmission shifting cable bushing has gone bad. My car will not shift into park it’s stuck in neutral. Ford tried transferring but couldn’t. I was instructed to file report online. I have a case number for assistance for repairs.

Purchased vehicle used from a state agency, transmission lurches, won’t go into gears, stays in neutral then launches into gear. Can put transmission into drive but the car won’t move for several seconds, will go into drive without warning.

The transmission failed AGAIN... the Original transmission failed at 75,106 miles and Ford would not replace it even though it was in the batch flagged as having a Transmission issue (assembled in Mexico with my VIN in the range). I filed a report like this for that one as well. I ended up having to pay $4,700 out of pocket the first time. This next time, the replacement transmission failed at 99,108 miles but this time was covered by the replacement transmission warranty (3yr unlimited mileage)

the bushing in the shift cable completely degraded. It is is the exact same thing that happened in recall 22S43. ford dealership is not willing to fix without recall notice due to my car being a 2017 and not 2013-2016. Please advise if this model year will get added to the notice. thank you!

vehicle lost power at stops over 2 days period, then 3rd day transmission failed completely. repair shop reports that overdrive went out and transmission has to be overhauled.

This is a known Ford recall for the "shifter cable bushing" on almost 3 million Ford Fusions, but dealership stated that my Ford Fusion does not fall into the recall. Dealer charged $588.99 to repair a known Ford defective part that cost $3.68.

As I was driving my check engine light came on and my car started to jerk. I had some previous issues with my AC and radio delays. I took the car to the dealer and he said my PCM was missing a ground and if I continued to drive it the engine could catch fire. The car is only 5 years old. He says they have seen this a lot in these cars.

I was driving home from work stopped at a red light on a hill.. the light turned green i went to proceed but my car had no power and didnt want to go.. i go it to go very slowly up the hill into a parking lot.. then the wrench light came on which is for the powertrain malfunction.. theyve recalled my car once before for the Power train: Automatic transmission: Torque converter recall number 17V427000.. is it possible that what they did could of been a temporary fix?

My 2017 Ford Fusion started have problems with shifting from different gears. After a week of small shifting issues, it would not shift into second gear. Launched into second gear from first very fast. Then it wouldn’t shift at all for awhile, then slowly worked between gears. Ford said it is the Torque converter and isn’t covered by recall. Sounds very close and fishy to me. It was made at the Hermosillo Ford plant and less than a month past the recall for this same issue out of this plant for this year make and model. Ford said there is nothing they can do. New transmission is 12 weeks out due to part shortage.

As I put the car in reverse it shifted really hard and then a warning light came on and told me to check the manual. Upon checking the manual I found it’s the Powertrain Indicator. As I was driving my shifter cable bushing came off in the parking lot and my cable came loose. I couldn’t switch gears and I had to shut off my car. It put my car into automatic parking brake but I checked under the hood and my shifter linkage was detached and the bushing was missing. Had this happened on the open road it could’ve caused a wreck.these bushings are made poorly.

My 2017 for fusion stopped changing gears and when trying to change gears it sounded awful and was very rough. Sheehy Ford said it was the torque converter and found numerous office issues with in the transmission. Repairs were $5k. Thank goodness for Ford customer support( my awesome rep Kiara) who provided financial help for the repairs. I have lots of articles about the same issue and am shocked that the SE model wasn’t included in the recall.

3/22/22 Check engine light illuminated and had cylinder 3 misfire code P0303. This was around 4 PM. Car was driven home and sat in driveway until 8 PM. (POWER TRAIN) AND (TORQUE CONVERTER). HOWEVER MY VEHICLE WAS THE 1.5 VERSION AND WAS HAVING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEMS AS THE 2.1 VERSION BEING COVERED THROUGH THE VEHICLE RECALLS. Multiple times, the car will not change gears. Turning the knob to reverse or drive, and the light indicates a gear for one second, then goes back to park. It has happened in parking lots a few times switching from reverse to drive and I need to stop the car and restart it a few times when I am blocking traffic. I have 61,000 miles on this Ford Fusion 2017 and the Rotary shifter module needed to be replaced already. I was unable to put the car into gear or get it out of Park. It simply would not rotate and move. I had to take the car to South Bay Ford to complete a repair. They replaced the rotary shifter assembly and upon my research I found that other owners are having similar issues.

Unable to place vehicle in park or shift vehicle with reliability. Vehicle does not safely reflect the gear that it is in (i.e. Lever in Park, transmission is actually in Reverse). Shift linkage bushing disintegrated causing the shift linkage to separate completely from the transmission. Lost all ability to put car into any gear, including neutral. Couldn't even override the transmission selector lockout to put car into neutral as entire transmission was disengaged. Car was immobilized in the middle of the road while my girlfriend attempted to parallel park. Whole front half of car was left stuck in the traffic lane. Incident happened around 1pm Pacific time on 10/25/21. Dealer said my specifc VIN isn't covered under recall affecting similar Ford Fusion/Edge models. There were warning lights that appeared on 10/22 or 10/23. I can't remember for certain. At that point the car still shifted fine. I thought it was some kind of electrical malfunction or malfunction with the gear selector dial.
