TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD F250 SD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR MAINTENANCE WHERE THEY DETECTED THAT THE ENGINE HEAD GASKET FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 45,000. UPDATED 05/04/11 *BF THE HEAD GASKET WAS LEAKING OIL. UPDATED 12/19/11

FORD 1999 F250 5.4L TRITON V-8 BLEW SPARK PLUG. LOST POWER, CREATED ROAD HAZARD AND SCARED THE CRAP OUTTA ME WHEN IT BLEW. MADE IT TO SIDE OF ROAD SAFELY AND GOT TOWED. WENT ONLINE TO FIND OUT THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM WITH THIS ENGINE AS WELL AS OTHER TRITONS. SPARK PLUG THREADS ARE VERY SHORT LENGTH. NOT JUST POORLY ENGINEERED BUT ENGINEERED TO FAIL. HAVE READ POSTS SAYING FIRES WERE CAUSED BY THIS PROBLEM WHEN FUEL MIXTURE EJECTED FROM HOLE CAUGHT FIRE FROM ARCING BLOWN PLUG. OTHERS CLAIM THE PLUG BLEW A DENT INTO HOOD. CANNOT IMAGINE THE DAMAGE TO AN EYE OR OTHER IF MECHANIC OR OTHER PERSON IS LOOKING DOWN INTO ENGINE LOOKING FOR REASON FOR TICKING NOISE, WHEN BAM, THE PLUG BLOWS OUT. FORD WILL FIGHT THIS TOOTH AND NAIL BECAUSE IT IS AN EXPENSIVE FIX. THEY MAKE TONS OF MONEY BY HAVING THEIR SHOPS...
1999 FORD F250 ORIGINAL OWNER, 150K MILES MAINTAINED BY FORD DEALER. SPARK PLUGS REPLACED AT 100K MILES PER MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE. #3 BLEW OUT ON 12/10/10. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE FORD MODULAR ENGINES AND CAUSES DAMAGE TO THE INTERIOR OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND COMPONENTS IN THE ENGINE BAY. HAS BEEN KNOWN TO START A FIRE. COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH IF SOMEONE WAS LOOKING IN THE ENGINE BAY WHEN A SPARK PLUG BLOWS OUT. NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED. *TR
AUGUST 2009 MY WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR 1999 F-250 SUPER DUTY WITH 6.8L V-10 AND SHE HEARD A POPPING NOISE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. IT TURNED OUT THAT IT WAS THE 4TH CYLINDER ON PASSENGER SIDE HAVING THE PLUG BLOWN OUT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD. HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED AND FIXED FOR $500.THEY USED A HELICOIL INSTEAD OF REPLACING THE HEADS WHICH IS WHATG FORD RECOMMENDS. OBVIOUSLY LOST THE COIL PACK TOO. I HEARD AFTERWARD THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR ALL OF THE TRITON MOTORS. I AM NOW WAITING FOR THE NEXT ONE TO GO AND DON'T REALLY TRUST THE VEHICLE FOR LONG TRIPS ANYMORE. THANKFULLY NO FIRE. I OWN A 1999 F-250 TRUCK WITH A V-10. RECENTLY RETURNING FROM AN OUT OF TOWN TRIP ONE OF THE SPARK PLUGS BLEW OUT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. IMMEDIATELY LOST POWER AND PULLED ONTO THE SHOULDER. SPEED LIMIT FOR THIS SECTION WAS POSTED FOR 75 MPH. LIMPED THE VEHICLE HOME FOR APPROXIMATELY 25 MILES WITH A STRONG ODOR OF GAS, WAS WORRIED OF POTENTIAL ENGINE FIRE BUT NEEDED TO GET HOME WITH MY TRAVEL TRAILER AND ATV. MY 1999 FORD F-250 V-10 SUPER DUTY WITH 42, 960 MILES BLEW THE SPARK PLUG OUT OF NUMBER 8 CYLINDER. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, APPROXIMATELY 15 MILES FROM A MAJOR CITY, WHEN IT SHOT OUT THE PLUG. I WAS ABLE TO LIMP INTO TOWN AND FIND A MECHANIC THAT WOULD WORK ON A SUNDAY NIGHT. HE HAD TO DRILL OUT THE PLUG HOLE, TAP AND INSTALL A STEEL INSERT, THEN REPLACE THE PLUG AND COIL PACK. IT WAS A $500.00 REPAIR. THIS IS A WELL KNOWN ISSUE WITH 1999 THROUGH 2002 FORD TRITON V-8 AND V-10 ENGINES. A SIMPLE WEB SEARCH REVEALS HOW PREVALENT IT IS, AND THE AMOUNT OF COMPLAINTS DOCUMENTED ON THE NHTSA WEB SITE CONFIRMS THAT FACT. NHTSA NEEDS TO FORCE FORD TO RECALL THEIR DEFECTIVE CYLINDER HEADS BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED BY THIS DESIGN FLAW. *TR

IT SOUNDED LIKE AND EXHAUST LEAK AND I KEPT DRIVING LATER TO FIND OUT THAT THIS SITUATION OFTEN CAUSES AN ENGINE FIRE. I HAVE A 1999 FORD SUPER DUTY PICKUP. I WAS DRIVING HOME AFTER MY SONS BASEBALL PRACTICE AND THE UNTHINKABLE HAPPENED. MY TRUCK MADE A LOUD BANG AND NOTICED A BURNING SMELL. I DRIVE A 1999 FORD F250 SUPERDUTY WITH A TRITON V10 WITH NO WARNING I HEARD A LOUD POPPING SOUND FROM MY ENGINE WHILE RUNNING I OPENED THE HOOD AND SAW ONE OF MY COIL PACKS BOUNCING DUE TO THE COMPRESSION OF THE ENGINE. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION I SAW MY SPARK PLUG WAS BLOWN OUT AFTER RESEARCHING ONLINE IT SEEMS THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH FORD ENGINES HOW THIS ISN'T A DEFECT ILL NEVER KNOW, EVEN THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER KNEW ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AS HE STATED HE TOWS FORDS ALL THE TIME WITH THIS PROBLEM I NOW HAVE TO HAVE A MECHANIC REPAIR THE DAMAGED SPARK PLUG HOLE TO REINSTALL A NEW PLUG AND HAD TO BUY A NEW COIL PACK. *TR

EXTINGUISHED FIRE WITH GARDEN HOSE, AND FOUND THE 3RD SPARK PLUG FROM THE FRONT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE ENGINE HAD BLOWN OUT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD, DRIVING THE IGNITION COIL INTO THE FUEL RAIL REPEATEDLY. THE FUEL RAIL RUPTURED, AND THE GASOLINE IGNITED. LESS THAN 12 MONTHS AFTER REPAIRING THE TRUCK, THE 2ND SPARK PLUG ON THE PASSENGER SIDE WAS EJECTED FROM THE CYLINDER HEAD EXACTLY AS BEFORE, BUT WITHOUT A FIRE THIS TIME. NOTICED AN EXHAUST LEAK WHILE DRIVING, CHECKED ENGINE TO FIND #3 PLUG HAD BLOWN OUT OF ENGINE LEAVING NO/STRIPPED THREADS LEFT IN HEAD RENDERING THE ENGINE UNUSABLE. TRUCK HAS SAT FOR FOUR MONTHS . PRICED A BARE HEAD FROM FORD DEALER AT $1,100. WITH CAMS $1,600 OR A RECYCLED ENGINE BETWEEN $1,400-2,000 PLUS LABOR. PURCHASED RECYCLED ENGINE, 5.4L, 8 CYL, SOHC WITH 15K MILES AT $2000 DUE TO COST EFFECTIVENESS AS OPPOSED TO THE COST OF REPLACING ONE HEAD. THIS IS WITHOUT LABOR AS I AM A CERTIFIED FORD ENGINE MASTER AND WILL DO THE WORK MYSELF. *JB

MY TRUCK HAS 78000 MILES AND ON 3/22/04 A SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT OF THE CYLINDER DAMAGING THE IGNITION COIL. FORD CONTACTED AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. TRUCK HAS NEVER BEEN TUNED BASED ON FORD'S 100000 MILE TUNE UP RECOMMENDATION. DEALER IS STATING I NOW NEED A VERY EXPENSIVE NEW CYLINDER HEAD.
