Audi MMI system randomly goes dark and reboots during driving - this turns off the rear camera and any GPS system being used to navigate along with the sound system, etc.
My 2020 Audi A4 infotainment MMI keeps rebooting and takes over a minute or so to load back. This has been happening recently and i have rebooted the system and followed the Audi/reddit forums to seek any help but no resolution. It seems most of the 2020 Audis are facing similar issues. This issue is concerning and needs immediate attention since I have had instances where i lost backup camera while backing. Losing Navigation Capabilities or backup camera feature while backing up or driving has jeopardized me couple of times since i had to fumble and hit brakes as i was almost handicap momentarily. Audi is aware of this issue and have had issued TSB in 2020 which is attached here, but no recall was ever conducted which they should as this now an industry wide problem. Also, i got to know that S they have issued a 2021 MMI...
The MMI system, which is the display in the car, keeps rebooting every few minutes. It is extremely distracting while driving. Also during parking or back up the parking assistance and backup camera would suddenly disappear because the system reboots. The rear cross traffic warning stops working during reboot as well.
Multimedia Infotainment system spontaneously reboots causing loss of cameras andcollision avoidance features and requires the driver to re-enter log-in information such as PIN #'s. This is a known software fault that should likely be elevated to recall status.
The MMI system crashes and reboots after about 90 seconds. This affects all parking and collision sensors.
MMI Constant Rebooting - Follow up My 2020 Audi A4 Quattro's MMI system constantly reboots (~60 seconds), causing the screen to go black/blank. Component Failed: MIB3 infotainment software. This persistent issue leads to reboots and loss of digital display. System available for inspection. Safety Risk: Significant, recurring hazard. Critical safety features are inoperative for ~1 min during reboots, including: Rearview camera (backing/parking safety) Navigation Communication No manual bypass exists; driver loses vital visual information Problem Confirmation: Consistently reproducible. Dealer proposed costly hardware replacement with no guarantee, contradicting manufacturer guidelines for known software issues. Symptoms: continuous black screen, Audi splash, then re-initialization. Problem worsened over weeks. Manufacturer's Knowledge: Extensive owner research (AudiWorld, Reddit) confirms this as a widespread, documented MIB3 software defect for 2020 Audi A4/A5 models. Audi's own Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) address this: TSB 2069112 (MIB3 improvements) TSB 2067021 (MIB3 malfunctions) These TSBs outline a specific, sequential software update...
I have started experiencing issues with the MMI (infotainment system) system rebooting every few minutes. It was very sporadic at first, but now it is at the point where I frequently don't have time to get into the system before it starts the reboot cycle again. When this happens, the screen will go blank for several seconds. Then a message will show for several seconds saying that the system is loading. The system will then try to guide me through several prompts to try to log back into the car's MMI system. Even if I choose "Guest User" I am shown multiple prompts before I get into the system and can use the functions located in the MMI. This can and does happen while driving, while parked, and while backing up. This reboot sequence makes all of the safety features, including collision avoidance and the backup camera inaccessible during this...
Starting in Feb 2025 my MMI will randomly turn off and eventually turn back on randomly. This happens 10 times in 10min. I can’t drive the car due to it being unsafe. It turns maps off, music, calls, and the dashboard. I’ve found 100’s of other Audi 2020 owners having the exact same issue. The complaints and asking for advice are in a site called Audi world. Type in a4 2020 MMI reboot and you’ll see that it started at the same time for all of us. Around Feb. the dealership scanned and nothing came up, they updated and it hasn’t fixed it. They said they don’t know what’s wrong. Called Audi they said the same. Getting the run around. They did offer to look at it for probably $2000 and said they can’t guarantee they’ll be able to fix it. Please make a recall. Started in Feb and is...
Vehicle's MMI started rebooting spontaneously from 4th week of June 2025. It happens randomly during drive and while following GPS directions. I strongly believe this being a software glitch and occurring without codes, it is a safety issue. These reboots are very unpredictable and happens constantly. When reported to Audi Dealers, they don't have a solution for it. After reviewing many blogs, and so many drivers are having this particular issue, I have decided to report it to NHTSA. Thanks, [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Vehicles MMI constantly cycling through reboot - inordinate amount of previous complaints about this exact issue - Dealer advised a min $1040 ($370 to diagnose + $670 new MMI) to diagnose and change MMI console with NO guarantee it will work and that's because: the dealer has not updated MIB2 (aka the MMI) using the instructions on a different bulletin, titled "TSB 2067021 - 91 MIB3: Garage opener/SXM/Online Radio or other malfunctions B129B11, B129C22, B123B13, B123C13, U044700 or B200000" (latest version is from July 27, 2024, they've had 6 revisions), before applying the most recent update. So it looks like, at a minimum, I'm two updates behind (encompassing of course, a ton of intermediate versions). So right there, the dealerships have been failing by not even taking the time to read Audi's own TSBs. The dealership said: they have seen this before and they have seen many leave without resolve...
I had experienced this problem prior of the center screen/Mimi restarting but typically it used to not be very often maybe once every few weeks. But for the past week it has been happening every 30 seconds to a min. This has caused my backup camera to restart as I am backing up causing me to almost get in an accident. As well as that as I am driving I am constantly having to focus on fixing the MMI and shutting off the volume as whenever it turns back on it plays radio static. I am very disappointed in the way Audi has handled this as I am still below 50,000 miles and they refuse to help. This problem is very frustrating as they don’t even have a 100% fix. Their first option was $598 update which I believe is very unfair considering this only happens to select cars and...
The MMI randomly turns of or turns on.
While driving, the infotainment screen (MMI system) randomly reboots without warning. This happens frequently, often multiple times during a single trip. When it restarts, the screen goes black and temporarily disables important functions like the navigation, rear-view camera, audio, and vehicle settings. This poses a safety risk by distracting the driver and making it difficult to safely reverse or park. I brought the vehicle to the dealership, and they confirmed the only solution is to replace the MMI system. However, I’ve seen many other Audi A4 owners online report the exact same issue. Given how widespread this appears to be, I believe this should be addressed as a manufacturer defect rather than a repair cost placed on the owner. There were no warning lights or messages before the screen began to fail.
The multi media screen is turning on and off repeatedly and will not stay on for more than about 2 minutes. Blacks out reverse camera as well hindering the safety of reversing. Makes the reverse un usable most times
A permanent failure of the emergency call module control unit and communication unit. The affected vehicles will not be able to establish an online connection. NO GPS, bluetooth and system rebooting constantly.
The MMI system in the car spontaneously reboots, every 2-5 minutes. During reboot, the screen goes black and systems such as the backup camera, rear cross traffic detection, rear collision warning, and navigation are lost until the reboot completes and the user has to cycle thru multiple input & loading screens to get back to full functionality. Given the length of time the reboot requires, often the screen gets back to usability, only to reboot again less than a minute later. The reboots are random and occur whether the radio is off, radio playing; bluetooth connected, not connected; android auto running/not running; car moving, car parked; engine off, engine on; cold weather/hot weather; wet weather/dry weather. This should be considered a safety issue, as the reboots can happen in the middle of a reverse parking maneuver, and they render the backup camera and obstacle detection sensors completely inoperative until the...
The MMI unit does a reboot every few mins. Even when driving and when reversing the car which prevents the back up camera to show up
MMI system in 2020 Audi A4 keeps blacking out and constantly rebooting while driving. This issue happens while going in reverse, which crashes the backup camera and triggers a safety warning in the car. It also happens while idling, which also triggers a safety warning in the car about the backup camera being inoperable.
MMI system is restarting on a near constant basis, both while parked and driving. Aside from being inconvenient, as you can not use media/navigation/etc while it’s rebooting, it also causes many safety features like drive assist/collision/obstacle detection to malfunction and not work, and is therefore simply outright dangerous.
Audi MMI (Muti Media Interface) constantly resets while driving the vehicle. The problem began about 4 months ago. The MMI would reboot very infrequently- about once every couple weeks. However, I took the vehicle in for a routine oil change yesterday and when I received the vehicle back, it now constantly resets as soon as it reboots. If I attempt to click a button (like accepting my user profile) the screen immediately goes black. I believe this poses an extreme safety hazard given it can shut off while in reverse when the back up camera is engaged. It is also very distracting constantly seeing the MMI reboot and shut down as every time it reboots it asks for credentials/PINs/Users etc. Lastly, it's very dangerous because if I'm on a call it tries to constantly kick it over to the Bluetooth (but it doesn't work) so I have to manually put...
The audi MMI keep rebooting for every 1 minute while driving.
MMI/infotainment system randomly shuts down every 30 seconds or even less. The entire screen goes black, it even happened when i was backing up the car while looking through the backup camera, which was extremely dangerous. I have tried all kinds of methods to fix but it doesn’t seem to be working, and it getting worse as we speak with more frequent shutdowns
The MMI (infotainment) system in my 2020 Audi A4 start to have intermittent reboot issue during normal driving starting earlier this year. It was working expected without reboot until that time. The MMI system reboot creates harzards and danger for drivers because during rebooting, the whole navigation system is not working neither did Carplay. What's even worse is that the back up camera and radar will also be disabled during rebooting. The rebooting time varies from 10s of seconds to minutes, with black screen and/or laggy, frozen screen. After rebooting, the system will have error prompt such as 'The selected user has not been used for a extended period of time' but the selected user has been using the vehicle all the time. Given the issue described above, there are more and more ppl who are experiencing the same issue joined a online thread: [XXX] , in order to identify...
Starting in around February the MMI (central computer system) system started rebooting at random times while the car was started. At first, I thought there must be something wrong with just my car. I took it into the dealer, and they said there was nothing they could do about it. I did some research and found many other people are having the same issues (thread has over 550 posts linked at the bottom) with the year model and they all started at the same time. I reached out to Audi International, and they say they've never heard of the issue, it's not widespread and to take it to the dealer (which is clearly a lie given the linked thread), when I took it to the dealer, they said Audi international needs to provide and update. Many people on the thread have been told the same thing by Audi and it...
Audi mmi will shut off randomly, while in drive(accelerating or not), reverse, or idle, causing the camera and sensors to become inoperable, and the vehicle gives a warning saying “parking aid: malfunction! Obstacles cannot be detected” only after the mmi system has rebooted. When this occurs while reversing, not only a car but a pedestrian may be passing behind me and I would not know. This issue also causes the car to randomly ask for a pin to log in to the mmi after rebooting randomly (there is no pin that exists for any users in my vehicle and even asks when i am on a guest user), creating further distractions while driving like when i may need to use navigation, especially when the system reboots repeatedly five to six times within a ten minute time frame. This issue has been recurrent from 3/13/2025 to present 7/13/2025
The entire MMI shuts down anywhere from every 30 seconds to 5-6 minutes. It has to then completely reboot, gives a pop up that “user has not been in vehicle for an extended amount of time” - I tried trouble shooting with Audi care over the phone, re added myself as a registered user with remote rights - makes me type my pin every time this happens. The safety risks are the distraction it takes from driving, especially when I am using it for navigation in an unfamiliar area, often getting lost and flustered and distracted
Audi MMI display constantly shuts off and turns back on with a message about this user not being used despite using it everyday. This happens all the time and has been on going for months. It is dangerous when I’m relying on it for navigation. I have not had this issue looked at at an Audi dealership but have read this issue seems to be widespread with 2020 models. The issue is ongoing and only seems to be getting worse.
The infotainment system will randomly reboot while the vehicle is on and being driven. The system will shut off, initialize, and reload. If using CarPlay, the system will shut it down and require you to manually reconnect your phone and enable CarPlay for it to load on the display. This system will reboot randomly about 4-5 times within a 30 minute/30 mile drive. To reconnect your phone you have to click on the display because the vehicle does not have a command knob that can be used without having to reach the display.
The MMI (multi-media interface) frequently reboots during driving, resulting in a black screen and the inoperability of key systems such as the backup camera, rear obstacle detection, navigation, and cell phone tethering (for hands-free operation). These reboots require user input, including entering a PIN to log into the user account (if set up) and repeatedly tapping on the MMI, which can be highly distracting while driving. By its very nature, the reboot catches the driver by surprise and requires diverting attention from driving.Typically, this user input is provided while stationary, immediately after starting the vehicle. This issue constitutes a safety concern, as reboots can occur during reverse parking maneuvers, rendering the backup camera and obstacle detection sensors inoperable until the system reloads. Additionally, reboots completely disable the navigation screens and necessitate multiple user inputs to restore functionality, which can be hazardous while driving. Many states have enacted hands-free laws and...
1) About two months ago, my 2020 Audi A4's MMI began crashing and rebooting randomly while driving. Most of the time, I had connected my phone via Bluetooth to the MMI, and was playing music from my phone. 2) Once it crashes and reboots, most of the time it would pick up my phone's Bluetooth signal again, and show the music file that is still playing, but there would be no sound from the car's sound system. 3) Even after I park, shut off my car, and restart it, the same problem would persist -- the car recognizes that a music file is playing, but no sound. 4) The frequency and randomness of the incidents picked up as time went along. Sometimes it would not crash for the entire duration of my commute; sometimes it would crash within minutes; sometimes it would crash multiple times. No discernible pattern. 5) Later...
My Audi A4 MMI continuously reboots randomly, every 5-10 minutes. it started back in January and has now gotten to the point where it wont last a full song on the radio without rebooting. This is an issue for thousands of Audi owners as a simple google search provides all of the same issues. https://forums.ross-tech.com/index.php?threads/48781/ https://www.audiworld.com/forums/a4-b9-platform-discussion-212/mib3-2020-mmi-rebooting-spontaneously-2020-a4-3082501/ https://www.reddit.com/r/Audi/comments/1j5and4/audi_a4_mmi_issues/
MMI keeps turning off, at this point it's every few minutes. Message states "The selected user has not been in the vehicle for an extended period ... ", something like that. But if you close out the message my info is still available to log into. I've tried a soft reboot by holding down the volume button, I've tried a factory reset and nothing works. It's getting dangerous because now it shuts off sometimes when I'm going in reverse and the camera is then unavailable. It shuts off when I'm utilizing it for directions via Android Auto. It's annoying and it's ridiculous that I have a luxury vehicle with this kind of issue. It's been going on for over 6 months now and only appears to be getting worse.
The MMI system keeps crashing and rebooting. It can happen as often as every 5-15 minutes. Navigation goes down and parking and backup camera is unavailable until system goes through the reboot process. My understanding is that there are numerous other Audi owners who have this problem, with no clear fix . Audi has nit addressed this or have been able to offer any help or resolution to this issue
My electronic infotainment system keep rebuilding and is affecting my rear camera when backing up I find it unsafe
The MMI keeps rebooting, even if I’m listening to the radio and my iPhone isn’t plugged in. If my iPhone is plugged in, it also does it and shuts off and reboots.
The vehicles MMI system out of nowhere keeps turning off and says "checking for remote access rights" and this happens constantly now for the past few months. Happened to reboot when I was backing out of a parking spot and my rear view camera turned off as well as the parking collision monitoring system. They all stopped working and I almost hit a pedestrian walking behind my car. This is a serious safety concern as this keeps happening every few minutes now in my car. Not sure if it became more persistent since my last vehicle maintenance few months ago but it's a problem. Driving with navigation engaged, it happened again while on highway and system shut down and I had no clue where to go. It's very distracting to happen while driving and all shut down.
Audi MMI (display console/dashboard cluster) randomly turns off and reboots while driving.
The infotainment screen (MMI) responsible for Rear camera, Cross traffic alert, Entertainment and controls some crucial vehicle functions tends to shut off by itself while driving. This issue occurs constantly and It's very sporadic. Nothing triggers this just the car decides to do it on it's own. This causes me to lose visuals of my surrounding, and sensor information and the ability to listen to Maps and music. Raises a major safety concern.
*The problem with the vehicle is within the Multi-Media Interface system. The MMI will randomly restart while driving, without warning. *This random and frequent reset has lead to issues with following maps (i.e. missing turns, lost in traffic/while on the road) and while backing up (i.e. system turns off while using backup camera and safety sensors to back up). *The issue was reproduced when I had a diagnostic screening completed on 6/9/25 by an Audi Dealership. Through the diagnostic screening, it was found to be a software issue that needed to be updated. This was not covered by any warranty or plan. *The vehicle was inspected by the Audi Dealership in Pittsburgh, PA in November of 2024 and the diagnostic screen was done on 6/9/25. *There were no warnings of issues within the car, the MMI just restarts, randomly with no specific time intervals but happens frequently enough that it...
The MMI component randomly stops working. Over the past four years of driving this Audi the MMI would suddenly reboot itself only once or twice a year. Now for the past three months it tries to reboot itself once or twice a day! It's quite startling for the music to go silent and the screen goes black, the first few times this happened I thought the engine died too (that's scary). It even happens when I'm backing out of my garage, luckily there is never anybody behind me but what if I'm in the mall parking lot. When the MMI reboots itself about half of the time it is similar to a conventional starting procedure, which isn't to bad but just annoying. Other times it wants you to log on as a "guest driver" or "registered driver hasn't been in the vehicle" or it even wants you to punch in...
MMI unit reboot itself randomly
While reversing, the “MMI system” which displays information on the central display screen, such as the backup camera, will crash and reboot. This will also occur while driving normally. If this happens while reversing, the car will then warn me that the backup camera safety feature is inoperable. This issues was NOT solved by a deal software update and requires a $4000 repair charge to resolve. Backing up without the camera operable at random times does not seem safe.
The Audi MMI is rebooting with no warning and no apparent reason, often multiple times in as short of a span as an hour. This is causing loss of functionality for handsfree calling and, in some cases, the backup camera, both of which are certainly dangerous. These symptoms first appeared in March 2025. This problem has been verified by an Audi Service Center. The cause was not identified by the technicians.
The MMI (the infotainment system on the dash) randomly turns off and resets every few minutes. This is a widespread issue based on a quick Google search.
The vehicle multimedia interface (MMI) has randomly rebooted itself on every trip for the past three months. This condition has occurred while reversing the vehicle, leaving the rear camera view blank.
Infotainment systems randomly reboot, which can happen when reversing, and reverse camera goes black during the incident is a safety concern.
The MMI spontaneously reboots numerous times while driving. When the reboots happen, the screen goes black and key systems such as the backup camera, rear obstacle detection, and navigation, become unavailable until the reboot completes and the systems reload. Restoring functionality requires user input to get through the loading screens. The issue started in February 2025 and the vehicle has been inspected by the Audi dealership (on 4/17/25), who applied an update at a cost of $185 which did not solve the issue), and they continue to claim there's nothing they can do since their OBD scans return no fault codes, even though there are numerous TSBs (filed with NHTSA) that point to available software updates that should be applied to address infotainment-related issues. This appears to be a widespread issue based on the numerous reports found on user forums online, affecting the same model year vehicles (for multiple examples,...
MMI (Infotainment system) shuts down periodically while vehicle is being driven or is idling in Park. Radio, navigation, etc., are affected. Also, the vehicles' collision warning system shuts down at the same time. Generally, the system will reboot itself within a few minutes. There is no real pattern to this issue as it may occur several times during a short trip in the car. The next day it may not happen at all. I contacted Audi dealer who stated they are not familiar with this issue and knew of no fixes.
The Multimedia Interface (MMI) infotainment system in my 2020 Audi A4 frequently and unexpectedly reboots during driving. Each reboot causes the display to go black, disabling essential safety features including the backup camera, rear obstacle sensors, navigation, and hands-free phone connectivity until the system fully reloads. Restoring operation requires manual interaction, such as entering a PIN and repeatedly using the touchscreen, which distracts the driver and creates unsafe conditions. This malfunction significantly jeopardizes safety, particularly while driving in reverse, as the abrupt loss of the backup camera and obstacle detection sensors occurs without warning, substantially increasing the risk of collision or pedestrian accidents. Additionally, during normal driving, the sudden reboots disable navigation guidance and hands-free phone operation, which are essential for compliance with state laws regarding distraction-free driving. The need for manual input to restore these functionalities causes further driver distraction, compounding the potential for hazardous situations. The issue initially...
MMI screen reboots multiple times while driving. Seems to happen more often when usb is plugged in for car play. Unable to access or view anything on screen like navigation which is quite unsafe
