The contact owns a 2000 Toyota Tundra. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 09V444000 (Structure); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the rear cross member was rusted. The local dealer was contacted and informed the contact that the recall repair could not be performed at their location. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and contacted the dealer; however, the dealer advised that the recall repair could not be performed at the dealer location. The failure mileage was approximately 327,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

WHILE SEARCHING FOR THE SPARE TIRE, THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE THE TIRE AND REALIZED THAT THE TIRE HAD FALLEN OFF AND THE REAR CROSS MEMBER WAS CORRODED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO MENDENHALL AUTO CENTER (8725 MALLARD STREET, JUNEAU, AK 99801) AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS ALSO TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE REAR CROSS MEMBER WAS COMPLETELY CORRODED AND NO LONGER STRUCTURALLY SOUND. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. I WAS RECENTLY DOING SOME ROUTINE REPAIRS ON MY 2000 TUNDRA AND NOTICED THE LEFT REAR FRAME RAIL & SPARE TIRE CROSSOVER HAS VERY SEVERE RUST DAMAGE. ON 9/21/2011 THIS 2000 TUNDRA WAS INSPECTED FOR FRAME RUST BY A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. I ASKED THE TECH WHAT WAS THE METHOD FOR INSPECTION, HE REPLIED THEY WOULD HIT THE FRAME WITH A HAMMER IN THREE TO FOUR AREAS, IF THEY WERE UNABLE TO PUNCH A HOLE IN THE FRAME IT PASSED INSPECTION. THE SPARE TIRE WAS NOT REMOVED TO INSPECT THE SPARE TIRE CROSSOVER. THE LEFT REAR FRAME AREA (WHERE THE WORST DAMAGE IS ON MY FRAME) IS NOT ACCESSIBLE TO HIT WITH A HAMMER WITH THE SPARE TIRE IN PLACE. ACCORDING TO TOYOTA THESE RECALLS INVOLVE RUST AND CORROSION OF THE FRAME, CROSS MEMBERS, AND FUEL TANK STRAPS. CONKLIN CARS TECH STATED NO DAMAGE, CONKLIN INVOICE #008916 DATED APR 09 2012. JAN 2015 I NOTICED A HOLE IN THE LH FRAME RAIL AND THAT THE REAR FUEL TANK STRAP HAD RUSTED THROUGH AND BROKE. COMPLAINT AND CONCERN REGARDING MY TOYOTA TUNDRA TRUCK, YEAR 2000. MY AUTO MECHANIC ADVISES ME THAT THE REAR FRAME, ALONG WITH THE SUPPORTS THAT ATTACH THE TRUCK BED TO FRAME HAVE RUSTED TO POINT THAT THEY ARE UNSAFE, AND SHOULD BE REPLACED. I HAVE A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA. DURING NORMAL MAINTENANCE I WAS INFORMED THAT THE FRAME HAD A SEVERE RUST ISSUE. THIS WAS SO SEVERE THAT THE MECHANIC HAD TO BE EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS WHEN PUTTING THE VEHICLE ON THE LIFT AS TO NOT DAMAGE THE FRAME. THE VEHICLE HAS APPROXIMATELY 60,000 MILES AND AT THIS POINT IS ALMOST UN SAFE TO DRIVE. THE REASON FOR THE MAINTENANCE WAS THAT THE SHIFTER CABLE HAD RUSTED THROUGH, NOT ALLOWING ME TO CHANGE GEARS. THEY FOUND A HOLE IN THE FRAME THAT CONCERNED THEM TO THE POINT THAT FAILED THE TRUCK'S STATE INSPECTION AND I ENDED UP PAYING $294.25 TO HAVE A FRAME PATCH WELDED IN TO PREVENT A FAILURE OF THE FRAME IN THE AREA OF THE RUSTED HOLE. I HAD THE TRUCK UNDERCOATED AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE IN 2000 AND THAT UNDERCOATING IS BLISTERING OFF, AND HAS BEEN BLISTERING OFF FOR A FEW YEARS. THE UNDERCOATING WAS MAINTAINED UNDER A ZIEBART WARRANTY UNTIL 2005 WHEN ZIEBART CLOSED THE LOCAL FRANCHISES.
