2018 RAM 1500 Engine Problems

The manifold bolts have broken on the engine for the second time. The first time the Dealership fixed it and it has done it again.

Check Engine Light comes on and off on its own. OBD read that the engine is not getting up to normal temp. Had it diagnosed and was told that the 3.6 V6 has issues with the oil filter housing cracking/leaking. Somehow the housing cracking caused me to lose coolant. To have everything repaired would be $1400.

Traveling (cruising) at highway speed on interstate the engine suddenly made a clanking noise and engine oil pressure went to zero and engine stopped. I barley managed to just get out of major traffic without causing an accident and off the interstate coasting to a stop This could have been a tragic accident that was just barely avoided.the truck has 80043 miles. Request for investigation and recall of 2018 Dodge Ram Tradesman vehicles due to exhaust manifold defects, Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning causing driver impairment, indirect impact on steering system functionality, and documented cases of accidents. I became disoriented, severe headache, drowsy, confused, steering wheel vibrated, pulled over got out of vehicle set on side of road until feeling better. Recall Z46 for the High Pressure Fuel Rail. Truck has been down for a month and was told today my truck is still not fixed and they have no clue when the parts will be coming in for the to get my truck done.

Engine failed at 142,000 miles. No prior indications or warning lights. Cam roller failed on cylinder #7 intake causing rod to throw through head cover, and valve to drop into cylinder #7 piston which damaged piston and disable engine. I have been advised that this was caused by the Variable Displacement mode the engine goes into when not under load, for better fuel economy. I have also been advised that this issue is not uncommon for these 5.7 Hemi engines which are advertised to last 200,000 to 300,000 miles. I had to replace engine and loss of use for 4 weeks. Not happy with Chrysler/Ram/Stellantis. I feel mislead/cheated.

Had the High flow fuel pump Changed and less than 400 miles had a catastrophic failure. Had to pay for a tow was told nothing is under warranty, even though it was caused all by a faulty fuel pump and caused other issues and was told by Stalantis that they do not cover calamity damage had to pay for PCM and injectors. My truck is still not fixed. My engine light is still on, brought it to three dealerships and nobody can figure it out. Also the deaf system is not functioning properly and had it replaced a 20,000 and at 70,000.

The engine seized up at 52,517 miles on February 28, 2025. It was making loud noises on the freeway and was losing significant power. We exited the freeway trying to get to a safe location and the engine froze. I had the engine replaced and the check engine light came on after 40 miles!

While being driven, the ecodiesel engine had a faulty ball bearing that malfunctioned inside the engine. This ball bearing then shot through the middle of the engine and out the bottom of the engine. The service technician at our local dealership inspected the engine and compared this to a "bullet under too much pressure due to a fault within the engine." He then said we "were lucky the ball bearing hadn't shot upwards through the floorboards." Not only could we have been at risk, other passing vehicles could have been shot with the ball bearing; this event could have led to wrecks and possible fatalities. The engine was completely destroyed by this defective ball bearing and cannot be rebuilt. No lights or messages appeared after the ball bearing shot through, even though the oil began draining instantly. The truck was pulled over and turned off before all the oil drained...

Electric Power steering failure

Traveling on highway, heard noise coming from the engine. I was close to an off ramp and got off the highway. In the process of getting on the off ramp alarms went off. Turned on the flashers, came to a stop partially on the shoulder. Turned off the vehicle, turned it back on and it started right up. Turned to head into town to get some place safe to check the issue and all the alarms went off again. Put the car into neutral and coasted down the road to a local restaurant parking lot. Once safely parked, I opened the hood and my engine was on fire. I ran to the window of the restaurant to get a fire extinguisher and was able to put out the fire quickly. my vehicle started knocking loudly, the all of a sudden I lost power on a 4 lane highway causing other vehicles to swerve around me. this could have been a accident if the road conditions were icy such as they are in Alberta. I had the vehicle towed to the dealership, the connecting Rods were in the bottom of the oil pan. since this incident I have learned of 2 other Eco diesels that had the same thing happen to them. These people are my friends and close aquaintances. So there must be more if I know 3 Eco diesels personally on my town.

Engine started knocking at 65mph. Slowed to find a safe place to pull out of traffic lane. Before pulling over engine stopped but was able to get completely off the road. My safety was not directly at risk but had to wait at the side of the road for 4 hours waiting for tow. The dealer stated they have no idea what failed. The engine has not been inspected. I have a 2018 Ram, with the 5.7 hemi. I purchased it new in November 2017. I currently have just over 53,000 miles and began to hear a ticking sound on startup that lessened upon driving but never completely gone and could smell exhaust fumes in the passenger compartment. I took this to an independent service center and they reported that two or the rear bolts have broken off that secure the exhaust manifold and the gasket has been damaged. The mechanic states that this is quite common but not a recalled area from the manufacturer. The repair will cost close to $1,000.00 to repair. Chrysler's 3.0L diesel engine have a high-pressure fuel pump with an open recall on them. A HPFP failure may introduce internally failed component debris into the fuel system and cause potential fuel starvation. In January of 2023, I attempted to remedy the situation with a RAM dealership in Aptos, California. The attached email chain shows that for 6 months, I was unable to receive parts for my 3.0L diesel engine. After a change in job opportunities, I ended up in Palmdale late November 2023, where I continued to pursue remediation at the RAM of the West Dealership in Lancaster. The engine ticking constantly as well as an electrical issue with the radio, heating, ac unit, control panel in dash that has all of this in it constantly changes goes haywire, won't let you do anything to fix it. It flips from setting to setting as well as different screens and the cargo lights have a habit of staying on an draining the battery. My truck only has 89,000 miles on it and yet it sustained a $5,000 engine malfunction. The engine was overheating and it turns out, that the cylinder heads failed. I have found this to be common with the 3.6 L engine that I have. This problem also led to the water pump failing and cylinder heads to need repaired. Basically the entire engine except the engine block is being repaired. The engine overheated multiple times. The first time I had the thermostat replaced. The second time it was low on coolant and topped off. Bu the 3rd time, they were able to diagnose this hiding problem that they said is extremely common in ram trucks with the 3.6 liter engine.

I bought this Dodge truck in 2018 from a certified Dodge Dealership in California. On March [XXX] this year around [XXX] I was driving on the freeway when experienced an engine stall, had to move the vehicle to the shoulder and almost got hit by a semi-truck. I have been getting regular mailings from Fiat Chrysler warning about the safety danger regarding the High pressure fuel pump for almost 2 years now. When I contact the dealer I am assured they will fix it when the fuel pump "grenades", but as long as the truck is running I shouldn't expect anything to be done. I have no fewer than three notices for the fuel pump and at least two for the "loss of crankshaft position" with no indications that anything will be done soon. Doing the math it looks like I can expect to be driving a safety hazard around for at least another 3-4 years and trying to sell it, like this, is unlikely. I had to get towed to repair shop 3/8/23, mileage 38171. No parts available till 4/21/23. No rental car? Stranded. NHTSA issued recall. I tried several times to get reimbursed for repairs $1,168.90. I just get the run around. It still needs software update. Then there is an outstanding recall X46, no repair options. Nothing available. I don’t trust Dodge.

Started experiencing a misfire shaking on my ram 1500, took it to the shop for a cylinder 5 misfire, the truck has 67,xxx miles, they're saying it was cylinder 5 lifter failure, apparently also camshaft. From what I've read online this is a reoccurring problem, why would someone want to pay 30k+ for a truck or car that won't last more than 70k miles... now the dealership says they don't know how much money its gonna cost and the camshaft is back ordered..

In the last 12 months my engine began to have a ticking sound which started out as a slight ticking to now a loud ticking sound. I am afraid that it may lose power or fail all together. I purchased a new 2018 Ram Truck with an ECO Diesel engine. The engine has undergone multiple recall repairs including one for the EGR that could cause a potential fire hazard. The truck has been in service for multiple engine related issues since I purchased the vehicle. It has continuously had a rampant smell of antifreeze inside the cab of the vehicle which has made me feel sick on occasions and I must open the windows even in the winter months. The service manager told me the high pressure fuel pump shattered and shot metal debris through the system. The High Pressure Fuel Pump is not available even though it is on a recall list. Driving on a busy highway, without any advance warning, all dash lights on screen turned on at once and truck completely shut down. We were unable to operate the truck or even put in neutral to move off the road. We had our children in the truck with us and it was a miracle we weren’t in an accident. We shut down the highway for hours waiting for a tow truck. We were charged $930 to tow to the nearest dealership.We paid out of pocket and have not been reimbursed. There have been multiple recalls on this vehicle. There are currently two open recalls one has been open since June 2022 with still no remedy available. After only 64000 miles the 2018 Ram 1500 3.6L engine will need major repair with the cam shaft. With no longer a warranty I am stuck paying for the repair. I believe this is a common problem. I have religiously changed oil and kept mileage low.

Vehicle has shut off three separate times while driving. Without any warning. First time I was making a left-hand turn when it shut off. Second time I was also turning when it shut off. Third time I was crossing over a train tracks making a left hand turn when it shut off right on the edge of the track. Each time I had to turn the switch to the off position and restart it the third time it took several times before it restarted. The third incident was November 6th.

Manufacturer has failed to provide a remedy for the Z46 recall, the primary "intended" use of the vehicle is for towing, and as such I feel that the vehicle is unsafe for its "intended" use. I have contacted Mopar online, and I have contacted the dealership multiple times. With no resolution, or suggested remedy. I am simply left with a vehicle of questionable reliability which I feel is unreasonable.

I was on a 6 land highway, fast lane, when my dodge truck just stopped. I was almost hit and cause several accidents in trying to get to the shoulder of the road. I called a tow truck and again the driver and myself almost caused accidents in trying to get the truck loaded on the truck. I took it to a near by repair shot. They diagnosed the problem quickly. I then waited 6 weeks, yes 6 weeks for the crank position sensor to come in. That was back in April. Ever since then we have been trying to load the correct software because it still is not running right. This is dangerous. I also have an outstanding recall on this truck for the high pressure fuel pump. So that can go at anytime. What has happened to Dodge, I wish I never bought this truck.

More than 1 year after a safety recall, there is still no remedy available. This is unacceptable for a safety issue. Now there is a new recall for the same issue that was previously recalled. Something seems fishy. Is my truck safe to drive? Buy it back if it can't be fixed. Seems reasonable to me.
