2013 RAM 1500 Steering Problems

Complete loss of power steering, service centers have stated the Electric Power Steering unit went bad, but there are currently no parts available for the repair with the exception of a rare after-market part that cost double the standard cost. trcu has been sitting for months waiting for parts.

The power steering failed without warning while I was pulling into my driveway and I could no longer turn the steering wheel. I was completely surprised by this and ended up driving about 10 feet into my front yard grass before slamming on the brakes and coming to a stop. Kids often play in this area of my yard...this could have ended tragically. My vehicle was towed to a repair shop where it was confirmed that the power steering system failed and had to be replaced. Only the repair shop has inspected the faulty power steering system, but I did take pictures of it when I picked up the vehicle. There was no warning light prior to the failure but, Immediately afterwards, a light and message indicating "SERVICE POWER STEERING" came on in my in-dash display. I keep my vehicle well maintained and with only 90,000 miles, this failure was...

Electronic power steering rack disabled while driving in parking lot which made it very difficult to steer into a safe area. Part has been replaced by qualified auto repair shop but was told that the current recall for this part, while being the same part, was not covered for year 2013 only 2015 and newer. There was a red steering wheel illuminated on the dash as soon as the power steering disabled.

First intermittent, then full loss of power steering when driving. This is a common problem with 2013-2016 ram trucks and should be recalled for safety reasons

Electronic Power Steering died. Could not turn steering wheel. I was just informed by repair shop that the steering control module and rack/pinion will have to be replaced at a cost of $3,600. No warning lights prior to the failure. Service center has ordered the parts and I am having them installed next week so I don't have a receipt for repairs yet.

I was driving home from the grocery store my trucked started jerking to the right and I lost all power steering the safety light came on. I lost control of the truck pulling into driveway and took out my mailbox due to the power steering failure. This had not been a previous issue and it just occurred while driving

While driving on the highway may power steering stopped working. I didnt know it stopped working until I started to steer to stay in the lane. This could have been a major problem if I needed to move suddenly and couldn't. I found on the electric power steering has been a problem in these. I had no warning, no alert, nothing. Just felt it and then noticed the warning light on the dash. I pulled over and took off the negative cable. This reset it and it continued to work for about 15 miles and it did it again. Now its like that all the time. I am starting to work the problem to figure out what is exactly wrong with it.

While making a left turn my husband states the power steering went out and he almost lost control of the truck and hit a utility pole.

My Dodge ram electric power steering failed. It will not work in cold weather around freezing. If it’s warm, it will work. There have been multiple reports of this problem with Dodge Rams

Driving on interstate steering just abruptly got very hard to turn there was no power steering

Vehicle power steering failure. Steering operating as designed until I parked in a bank parking lot to use to ATM when I attemped to back out the power steering was inop. A local repair shop dignosed the problem as an internal failure of the power steering pump. Had this happen while driving an accident would almost certainly have occured. Very unsafe, the replacement part cost more than two thousand not to include the replacment cost.

On July 9, 2023 the steering failed as I was driving, resulting in loss of control. With great difficulty I was able to return the vehicle to my house. The vehicle stayed there untill it was repaired on August 8, 2023. Repairs required an expense of $3,251.36.

Steer controls were lost while driving around a 3 lane curb. I was responsive enough to refrain from hitting the vehicle in the lane next to me. I have not had the vehicle checked by a mechanic but I have investigated all electrical connections as well as fuses and found no culprit.

The power steering went out. I took it to the Dodge dealership and they said it was the electric power steering module and to replace it the rack and pinion steering had to be replaced as well at a total cost of $4100.00 . This vehicle only has 36400 miles on it and I feel it should be included in a recall.

electronic power steering stopped working while driving very difficult to get to side of road. the service power steering warning light came on when it happened but nothing prior. have to bring it to dealership to have it diagnosed but see on ram forums and within the NHTSA site that this seems to be happeneing to others however Only certain years have been recalled.

While driving the vehicle the electric power steering unit failed. We have reset the computer and checked the fuses and it is still not working. I will be taking to the dealership today.

The vehicle was steered to the side of the road and restarted; however, the failure recurred after five minutes. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 118,000.

My 2013 Dodge Ram 1500, going down the road and the power steering stopped working, almost got in an accident due to the fact I could barely get the truck turned off the highway. It has been parked now for over a month. Mechanic states it needs a rack and pinion, out of stock everywhere, sounds like a multitude of people are having the same problem......so Dodge are you going do a recall and stand by your product?????

Was driving my 2013 ram 1500 hemi truck to work when all of a sudden my wheel locked up and I lost all powersteering. This is a huge safety concern as there was no warning at all and come to find out after reading this is a very common problem on these trucks and it should not be. It’s extremely dangerous and puts the driver as well as other drivers on the road at extreme risk.

Power Steering not activating immediately at ignition start. It takes 2-3 minutes. It was a few seconds at first, now it has become longer.

POWER STEERING QUIT WORKING AND SOMETIMES WORKS INTERMINTENTLY. POWER STEERING QUIT IN THE MIDDLE OF A TURN AND I HAD TO DRIVE THOUGH A FRONT YARD TO AVOID COLLISION. Service power steering fault , power steering is intermittent and will throw a code and you will loss power steering until you reset ignition! Also exhaust manifold bolts seem to break alot

Driving on interstate on vacation, we stop for gas and started engine no power steering. Cut off and restarted engine now I have power steering. Stop again to get gas start engine no power steering. Tried cutting off and restarted engine no power steering and still 2 weeks later no power steering and you can't drive this truck without power steering. Checked on getting it replaced and was told the part is on Nation wide backorder. So how is this going to be drivable? Called Ram dealer and they say no recall on this. So many ram trucks are having this issue. Ram should fix this deadly problem they created.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the power steering rack assembly needed to be replaced and reprogrammed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 62,000.

The service power steering light appears often upon starting the truck and the steering wheel is locked. The power steering warning lamp comes on with no warning at all and the power steering locks up intermittently while driving or cornering. I have not had a dealership look it over. I just discovered this complaint form. My mechanic will take a look at it this coming weekend. Until then the truck isn't drivable and I am out of a vehicle. It is extremely dangerous and now costing me money in lost work.

The contact shutoff and restarted the vehicle to correct the failure; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the steering gear was replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 13,600.

All instruments and control of window wipers stopped responding to their switches. Wipers will not turn off, no horn, no working switches on steering wheel, communication to abs system, trailer brakes, data from abs not being received. Dash cluster flashes out for about 10 seconds while driving not knowing if the vehicle is still running while on the highway or freeway. Everything is pointing to the steering wheel clock spring. All replaced but still no controls or horn or ability to run vehicle safely on the roads. Will not pass inspection from this issue.

Power steering failed while driving

This is an issue I had with my electric power steering on my 2013 Ram 1500. I stopped at a gas station to fill up and when finished and cranked up my truck I had no power steering. The truck was very very difficult to steer on my way back home. If this would have happened while driving especially on a sharp curve I could have had an accident. The whole unit had to be replaced at the dealership for a cost of over $2000. There should have been a recall on this part with the manufacturer responsible for the repair cost.

Steering randomly stopped working upon cranking up. Dealership says codes lead to replacing rack/pinion for $4000. There is no seen damage & nothing leading up to this problem, so I wanted to make you aware since this topic is being investigated.

Power steering does not work below 50 degrees F.

The power steering suddenly stopped working. There was absolutely no warning prior to the incident. The part is still on my truck. I was pulling onto a major highway at the time and was just lucky there was no traffic anywhere near me or this could have caused a major wreck. If I turn the truck off and back on, the problem corrects itself, but it comes back. Sometimes after 30 secs or sometimes not until the next day, but it will always come back. I have not had it checked out yet.

My 2013 Dodge Ram 1500 suddenly lost all power steering on Saturday 8/12/23. There were no warning lights beforehand but in the moment it said "service power steering" on the dash. Luckily I was in a parking lot and able to go in reverse back into my spot. I then had my truck towed to my mechanic who said that everything was working perfectly when he arrived on Monday morning. Upon further inspection he said that there is an error with the electronic steering gear and that it would take approximately 10-12 weeks and upwards of $5,000 to fix. At this point, I took the truck back home because they said that it was working fine and it did work fine for one day until I tried to go to work this morning (8/16/23)and the same thing happened. Again, I was luckily still in the parking lot of my apartment...

2013 RAM 1500 EXPERIENCED TOTAL AND COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER STEERING FUNCTION DRIVING IN TRAFFIC ALMOST CAUSING ACCIDENT. THIS MATCHES THE NHTSA INVESTIGATION RQ 23-003 AS OF 8/4/23 (Investigator: [XXX] ). THAT I FOUND ONLINE THIS MORNING. THE VEHICLE IS NOW AT THE LOCAL RAM DEALERSHIP IN MURFREESBORO, TN. TRUCK WAS TRAVELING AT APPROX 45 MPH GOING STRAIGHT WHEN THE STEERING LOSS OCCURRED. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

While traveling 70 mph down a straight highway my power steering jerked and became inoperable with no prior indications or warnings. The Service Power Steering indication came on afterwards. I was able to regain and maintain control with great physical exertion and difficulty. If my wife, daughter, or someone with a weaker stature was driving, the results could have been catastrophic. I checked all connections and fuses related to the electric power steering and everything appeared to be is good operating condition, indicating the likely culprit is an EPS module. The nature in which the EPS failed can and will cause serious injury and death if not resolved.

EPS stopped working. The truck has less than 40,000 miles on it.

Backing out of the driveway, the power steering light came on and the power steering completely stopped working. I checked the fuses and they were all functional. This morning, I read an article (published 6 days ago) that other 2013 RAM 1500s have experienced the same issue and that NHTSA is investigating. Please add my truck to the list of those experiencing this issue.
