While driving approximately 35–40 mph, the steering wheel locked unexpectedly. My [XXX] child was in the vehicle at the time. I was nearly unable to control the vehicle, creating a serious risk of a crash or fatal injury. The vehicle has a long history of electrical problems including repeated battery failures and a prior transmission replacement. Due to the steering failure, the vehicle is unsafe to operate and has not been driven since the incident. No warning lights were observed prior to the steering failure. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The vehicle exhibits a severe vibration and shaking at normal highway speeds, most notably around 70–80 mph. The condition is repeatable and occurs during steady freeway driving. The vibration is strong enough that the vehicle feels unstable and unsafe to operate at typical highway speeds. This condition significantly affects safe freeway operation. Due to the severity of the shaking, I no longer feel comfortable or safe driving the vehicle at or above normal traffic speeds, which increases risk when merging, maintaining speed with traffic, or responding to road conditions. The problem has been reproduced and confirmed by authorized dealerships. Multiple inspections and repair attempts have been performed over several months for the same vibration concern. Major drivetrain components, including the rear differential and driveshaft, were replaced, but the vibration remains unresolved. The servicing dealer has stated they do not have a further diagnostic path and are unable to continue addressing...

So there are TWO main points of concern on this vehicle, number 1 being the steering racks. Many other people have had the same issue as myself. Steering rack completely shut down about a year ago on the freeway, rendering my steering completely useless which was extremely dangerous. 8K repair bill that Hyundai will not acknowledge. Now that comes to my 2ND point, the oil pressure sensor switch. It’s more common than the steering racks. Many owners are reporting it as low at 40-50K miles, yet there’s an open recall in Korea for this exact problem. But the USA does not get any acknowledgment for it??? Yet another costly repair due to defective engineering. Might I add as well, the transmissions Prior to 2018 no matter if you’ve had them replaced, they end up failing and people get absolutely 0 help with them. It’s ridiculous and these issue can eventually...

My 2015 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 AWD has steering issue. The steering wheel "sticks," not returning to the center on its own when steer more than 20 degrees either to the left or right. For example, on a winding road or on a corner, I would turn or rotate the steering wheel either to the left and right, and the wheel will stay that way rather than returning to the center once the road become straight. I have to yank the wheel back to the center in order to keep the car on the road. On a highway, I have to make constant correction to keep the car center or hold the wheel firm in order to keep the wheel, therefore, the car stady and and safe. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. I had an extend warranty until April 2025, and such brought the issues to 2 different dealers but...

Electric Assisted Steering sporadically locking up during turns, requiring effort to unlock. Other times it will lock during hwy driving requiring significant effort to steer the vehicle. Once under 60 mph it unlocks and goes back to normal. This has been happening unexpectedly and without any warnings. Stopping and shutting down the vehicle then restarting will also reset the steering.

The steering wheel frequently locks in position during left or right turns at speeds between 30 and 70 mph. A deliberate effort is required to return the steering wheel to neutral. My Hyundai dealer shop would not diagnose the problem due to the problem being intermittent, despite the car being under the bumper to bumper warranty.

Driving and car just quit. Clock turned, wipers went crazy, and then smoke came up the front windshield from the engine. I bailed and left it in the road. Awful and dangerous situation. Dealership wasn’t excepting Genesis anymore. Towed to a dealership 50 min away. Told the engine failed.

Steering wheel sticks in turns, requiring the wheel to be pulled back to center. This is most noticeable on long sweeping highway turns and adds additional effort to operating the vehicle. This is the second time I've had this problem. The first time, at approx. 30k miles, the Hyundai diagnosed and replaced the electric power steering rack, which resolved the issue. Now at 65000 miles, the same issue has returned. There are a number of other people posting on the genesis forums about this same issue.

theres multiple of vehicles like mines that are having the battery terminal issue. and when its loose it cause the car to shut of while at high speed causing the driver to loose power steering and brakes.
#11461315 |
The positive battery terminal has a design flaw where it will wholly lose conductivity with the battery post due to vibrations, stress and age. After numerous dealer visits where "nothing was wrong" I began to diagnose the issue myself. I tracked it down to faulty positive battery terminal, which due to the lack of manufacturer availability I had to correct myself. It seems to be such a widespread but "unknown" issue with the entire vehicle model that I made a repair guide on the subject with photos: https://genesisowners.com/genesis-forum/threads/improved-positive-battery-terminal-box.32768/#post-411757 The primary issue at stake is the sudden, unexpected loss of power steering when maneuvering at low speeds. The vehicle will lose additional safety systems when the battery power is interrupted, such as collision avoidance, parking sensors, airbags and even powertrain control in extreme cases. No manufacturer diagnostic codes will ever be set as the systems in the vehicle do not account...

Upon driving many warning lights light up and make warning signals on the instrument dashboard. These warning lights light up at the same time or in succession and include: check bid system, tire pressure, check engine light, skid control, check bsd system, and others. In addition, brakes become sticky and steering is affected. Worse yet, car slows down on its own as it engages crash avoidance system.

ESC failed. I was attempting to make a left turn from a stopped position at a typical intersection. I lost control of the vehicle as it started to fishtail once I began the turn. Brakes did not respond and I ended up hitting the curb on the outer lane with both front and rear tires. Side curtain and passenger seat airbags deployed. Vehicle is now a total loss. I believe the faulty ESC poises a lot more risk that just a fire. From other reports on genesis forums by consumers like me, this problem with Hyundai's ESC seems to be a common and reoccurring problem. Recall should be updated to include that ESC may fail and makes the vehicle unsafe to drive.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 HYUNDAI GENESIS. WHILE DRIVING AND MAKING A TURN, THE STEERING WHEEL SEIZED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. IN ADDITION, WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS SHIFTED INTO DRIVE, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DISPLAY REVERSED AND THE VEHICLE MOVED BACKWARDS INSTEAD OF FORWARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO NAPLETON HYUNDAI GLENVIEW (LOCATED AT 1620 WAUKEGAN RD, GLENVIEW, IL 60025, (847) 729-8900) TO BE DIAGNOSED, BUT A FAILURE CODE COULD NOT BE LOCATED. THE DEALER SUGGESTED THAT THE GEAR SHIFTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED CASE NUMBER: 15620163. ON 31 JAN 2019-ICE AND SNOW COLLECT IN A POCKET UNDER THE ENGINE. FREEZING THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE FOR THE ELECTRONIC STEERING. THE "ELECTRONIC STEERING LIGHT " CAME ON, RESULTING IN NO STEERING FUNCTION AT ALL. AUTO HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALER. LUCKY FOR ME I WAS IN A PARKING LOT. IF I HAD BEEN DRIVING IT WOULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC. AS I WAS PICKING UP MY AUTO, ANOTHER ONE CAME IN ON A FLATBED WITH THE EXACT SAME ISSUE.

SINCE LAST OCTOBER, THE CAR'S STEERING HAS PERIODICALLY FAILED TO RETURN TO CENTER, AFTER TAKING A RIGHT HANDED CURVE. THE CAR JUST KEEPS TURNING. WE HAVE TAKEN THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE WE LEASED IT; HOWEVER, THEY HAVE REPEATEDLY FAILED TO FIX IT. I HAVE LOOKED THE PROBLEM UP ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT IT IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY PROBLEM THAT MUST BE FIXED. WHY NOT FIX THE PROBLEM BEFORE PEPLE GET HURT?

WHEN DRIVING DURING HEAVY RAIN ON THE EXPRESSWAY THE CAR BEGINS TO FISHTAIL OUT OF CONTROL. IT FORCES THE DRIVER TO DROP THEIR EXPRESSWAY SPEED TO ABOUT 45 MILES PER HOUR. ALL THE OTHER TRAFFIC CONTINUES TO PASS BY SAFELY AT SPEEDS OF 60 TO 65 OR MORE. THIS IS A DEFINITE SAFETY ISSUE. WHEN IT BEGAN, I WAS NEARLY REAR-ENDED BY A SEMI WHEN I WAS FORCE TO DRIVE SLOWLY IN THE RIGHT LANE AT ONLY 40 TO 45 IN A 70 MPH ZONE. IF I DARED TO EVEN TRY TO GO ANY FASTER THE CAR WOULD BEGIN FISHTAILING. NONE OF THE OTHER TRAFFIC HAD ANY ISSUE GOING FASTER, AND I NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS IN THE 2013 GENESIS I HAD PREVIOUSLY. I HAVE READ OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE CAR IS REACTING TO ITS FRONT SENSOR BEING 'BLINDED'. THIS IS DEFINITELY A DESIGN FLAW, AND...

NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER 16V575000 - MY HYUNDAI IS EXPERIENCING THE EXACT SAME SYMPTOMS THAT IS PORTRAYED IN THE CAMPAIGN NUMBER I HAVE LISTED. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP MULTIPLE TIMES AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THEY ARE UNAWARE OF WHAT THE ISSUE IS OR HAVE "ATTEMPTED" TO FIX THE ISSUE YET IT STILL OCCURS. NOW, BECAUSE I HAVE JUST SURPASSED MY WARRANTY, THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP IS MAKING ME PAY FOR ALL DIAGNOSTICS AND FIXES. MY VIN, HOWEVER, DOES NOT SHOW THAT THIS WAS A PART OF THIS RECALL. ALL OF MY WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATE. MY STEERING BECOMES TIGHT. MY BACKUP CAMERA WILL NOT WORK. AND MY SPEEDOMETER AND TACHOMETER WILL GLITCH AND NOT ACCURATELY DISPLAY MY SPEED OR RPMS. ALL INDICATORS INSIDE THE LCD SCREEN WILL SHOW ME THAT I HAVE A MALFUNCTION. THIS INCLUDES MY PASSENGER SEAT BELT, MY LANE KEEP ASSISTANCE, MY AUTONOMOUS EMERGENCY BRAKING,...

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 HYUNDAI GENESIS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED A LOSS OF STEERING AND BRAKE FUNCTIONALITY. VARIOUS WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO MOVE THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF EFFORT. THE VEHICLE OPERATED NORMALLY AFTER IT WAS RESTARTED. STEVENS CREEK HYUNDAI (4425 STEVENS CREEK BLVD, SANTA CLARA, CA) DIAGNOSED THAT A RODENT HAD EATEN THE WIRING IN THE VEHICLE AND IT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THIS WAS THE SECOND OCCURRENCE OF THE SAME FAILURE. UPON RESEARCH,THE CONTACT FOUND THAT THE VEHICLE USED SOY COATED WIRING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 14,837.

I WAS ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A LEFT TURN INTO TRAFFIC WHEN SEVERAL DASHBOARD INDICATORS WENT OFF AND THE POWER STEERING SHUT DOWN. MY FAMILY AND I WERE ALMOST HIT BY ON COMING TRAFFIC! IN SECONDS I WAS FACED WITH HAVING TO TURN OFF AND RESTART THE VEHICLE IN ORDER TO GET IT TO WORK CORRECTLY AND GET OUT OF THE ROAD. GOT HOME AND PARKED IT OVER NIGHT AND THE NEXT DAY THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN WITH STEERING AND INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT FEEL SAFE IN THIS VEHICLE! 2015 GENESIS 5.0

A/C, HEATER VENTS LOCATED ON THE BOTTOM (FOOT) FOR DRIVER AND FRONT PASSENGER ARE ALWAYS STAY OPEN IRREGARDLESS WHAT YOU SELECT. DEALER LOOKED TWICE, NO HELP. SAID THAT'S HOW ALL THE CARS ARE. I HAVE MYSELF CHECKED THE BRAND NEW 2017 GENESIS PARKER ON THE LOT AND IT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. YOUR FEET WILL FREEZE AND THERE IS NO WAY TO BLOCK OR CLOSE THE BOTTOM VENTS. ALSO, THE HAPTIC STEERING WHEEL WARNING CAME ON AT AROUND 5K MILES, DEALER LOOKED AT IT ORDER SOME PARTS TO REPLACE THE SENSOR ETC.

THE CAR ENGINE WILL SPONTANEOUSLY STOP WHILE THE CAR IS IN MOTION. THIS CAUSES ME TO LOSE ALL POWER STEERING, BRAKES STABILITY CONTROL ETC. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON CITY STREET WHILE THE CAR WAS IN MOTION. THE CAR WAS MOVING FORWARD IN A RELATIVELY STRAIGHT LINE. IT HAS BEEN "FIXED" BUT NOT FIXED. IT IS AT THE DEALER FOR THE 2ND "FIX". THE 1ST "FIX"WAS 10/12/15. THE 2ND "FIX" BEGAN 10/27/15 & IS STILL UNDERWAY. THE CONSUMER STATED A DIAGNOSTIC REPORT FOUND 32 CODES. THE CONSUMER WAS PROVIDED A LOANER VEHICLE. UPDATED 10/25/2017*JS

I OWNED THE CAR FOR 9 MONTHS AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM IN THE RAIN. IT WAS RAINING AND MY CAR SAFETY LIGHTS STARTED FLASHING TELLING ME THAT FRONT COLLISION WARNING WAS NOT WORKING, LANE DEPARTURE WARNING WAS NOT WORKING, BLIND SPOT DETECTION WAS NOT WORKING. AND TO CHECK AEB SYSTEM. HYUNDAI TOLD ME THAT ALTHOUGH IT WORKED FINE FOR 9 MONTHS, THAT THE SAFETY FEATURES MAY NOT WORK IN THE RAIN

AFTER HAVING ALL THREE WORK DONE ON MY CAR: FOUR WHEEL REPLACED AS STATED ON THEIR CAMPAIGN , COWL AND ELECTRICAL WIRING REPLACEMENT UNDER , THE VIBRATION ON THE STEERING WHEEL BECOMES EVIDENT/STRONGER AT LOWER SPEED(BELOW 25 MPH) AND AT IDLE. WHEN DRIVING I FEEL MY HANDS FEEL TIRED BECAUSE OF THIS VIBRATION AFFECTING THEM. I WENT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AT HYUNDAI LONG ISLAND, QUEENS FOR THE PROBLEM BUT AFTER WAITING FOR HOURS, I WAS TOLD THAT THEY CANNOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE PROBLEM . AND UNTIL NOW, THE VIBRATION IS BECOMING AN ANNOYANCE.

WHILE DRIVING AT ABOUT 25 MPH, THE POWER STEERING FROZE UP ON ME.(FORTUNATELY), I WAS NOT DRIVING FAST, OR ON A BRIDGE, FREEWAY, ETC. AND WAS ABLE TO RETURN TO A SAFE LOCATION. I CALLED A TOW TRUCK. TOWED TO LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALER. AFTER 20 DAYS IN SHOP, THEY REPLACED STEERING COMPUTER, RACK AND PINION STEERING TOO. I AM APPALLED THAT A NEW (EXPENSIVE) 2015 GENESIS WITH VERY LOW MILEAGE, HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM. I AM NOW VERY HESITANT ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THE HYUNDAI BRAND. I HOPE NO ONE ELSE HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM, BECAUSE IT IS A REAL HEADACHE!!!
