Transmission locks up when vehicle has been driven for a short time
The contact owns a 2004 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that while driving at 60 MPH, the transmission was shifted into drive(D) and the vehicle shuddered. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 04V176000 (Power Train). The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the transmission fluid was flushed 3 times; however, the failure persisted. The contact stated that the failure recurred while the vehicle is shifted into drive(D) and D3. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 180,000.
I was approaching a stop sign and slowing down to < 10 miles and the engine continued to slow down and the car started to push forward while I was totally pressing on the brake - it did not want to stop and kept pushing forward. I wasn't sure what was happening and quickly put it in neutral. My daughter who drives the car to school was sitting in the passenger seat and was completely shocked. I have been driving for 30+ years and at that moment felt things were totally out of my control. Extremely off to see a car keep going when you are trying to stop. CAR WOULD NOT. MOVE IN ANY GEAR, LET SIT OVER NITE STARTED CAR AND MADE IT HOME WITH NO PROBLEM

I WAS DRIVING WIT MY FAMILY IN THE CAR POOL LANE WHEN WITHOUT WARNING MY VEHICLE STARTED BRAKING HARD AND ACCELERATING, BACK AND FORTH, LUCKILY THERE WASN'T TOO MUCH TRAFFIC OR MOST LIKELY THIS SITUATION COULD HAVE CREATED A SERIOUS ACCIDENT . I GOT OFF THE FREEWAY AND NOTICE THE TRANSMISSION MUST BE STUCK IN 2ND OR 3RD GEAR. I DOUBT MY HONDA PILOT IS AN ANOMALY, SINCE THERE'RE LOT OF VIDEOS ONLINE ABOUT THIS VEHICLES TRANSMISSION ISSUES.
INTENSE SHUDDER EMANATING FROM UNDERNEATH THE CAR CAUSING THE WHOLE CAR TO SHAKE. TYPICALLY OCCURS BETWEEN 20-30 MPH DURING SLIGHT ACCELERATION. ABATES SOMEWHAT IF TAKE FOOT OFF OF ACCELERATOR. FROM MY READING, THIS APPEARS TO BE A VERY COMMON ISSUE INVOLVING THE TORQUE CONVERTER.
TORQUE CONVERTERS GET STUCK AND CAUSES VEHICLE TO "SHUDDER" OR VIBRATE QUITE BADLY IN THE 40-50 MPH RANGE.
OK THE VEHICLE STALLS ON HILLS, BECOMING NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO PROCEED, AND SIMULTANEOUSLY EMITS A GRINDING-SCRAPING SOUND SEEMING TO COME FROM THE FRONT-END PORTION OF THE UNDERCARRIAGE. SO, FAR IT HAS ALWAYS MANAGED TO CONTINUE RUNNING/MOVING FORWARD DURING AND AFTER. IT JUST FEELS LIKE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IS BADLY, AND NEAR THE END OF SLIPPING/FAILING. I LOOKED UP IT'S VALUE ON A WEBSITE, AND A WARNING BOX POPPED UP NOTIFYING ME THAT MY PILOT'S YEAR MAKE & MODEL HAS 6 SEPARATE MANUFACTURER'S RECALLS. UPON LOOKING FURTHER, I SEE THAT-INDEED-ONE RECALL IS FOR THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS! THEN, WHEN I DID ANOTHER SEARCH, SPECIFIC TO MY VIN #, I SAW THAT MY PARTICULAR PILOT DOES NOT HAVE ANY RECALL ON IT. YET, NOW, THE TRANSMISSION IS FAILING, AND I ONLY JUST PURCHASED MY CAR AT THE END OF JANUARY, 2019....I WANT TO AT LEAST MAKE MY BEST EFFORT TO COMPLETE THE PROCESS...
PURCHASED A 2004 HONDA PILOT USED AT 136K MILES. WITHIN A WEEK OF DRIVING THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. ENGINE CODES P0700, P0705, P0740 WERE ALL PRESENT, WHICH ARE ALL IN RELATION TO THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. THE TRANSMISSION SHOP CONFIRMED THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE ACROSS HONDA & ACURA VEHICLES IN THE '03-'04 RANGE (SEE 2003-2004 ACURA MDX SERVICE BULLETIN 06-003). A DESIGN FLAW IN THE TORQUE CONVERTER CAUSES IT TO BREAK DOWN & SHED METAL FRAGMENTS, WHICH COMPROMISES THE REST OF THE TRANSMISSION. THE ONLY REAL FIX IS TO REBUILD OR REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. HONDA AMERICAS CUSTOMER SERVICE REFUSED TO REVIEW MY CASE ANY FURTHER, EVEN UNDER GOODWILL CONSIDERATION.

TOOK IT IN FOR REPAIRS AND WAS TOLD THE TRANSMISSION WAS SHUDDERING 35 MPH - 40 MPH WHEN IT WAS TEST DRIVEN. LOOKED INTO THE ISSUE AND WAS TOLD THE THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED (FAULTY), IMMEDIATELY.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL DEALER. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 188,523.
MY WIFE WAS SMASHED BETWEEN AN OPENED DRIVER'S DOOR AND A POLE BECAUSE THE THE CAR ROLLED BACKWARD. THIS HAPPENED IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT THE POWER TRAIN RECALL (SANCTIONED BY NHTSA) HAD BEEN COMPLETED IN 2004. I PARTED WAYS WITH THE VEHICLE, INCURRING A SUBSTANTIAL LOSS. RIGHT AFTER I PURCHASED IT NEW IN 2004, I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER SINCE THE MODEL WAS SUBJECT TO A NEARLY IDENTICAL POWER...
NOTICED THAT THE D WAS FLASHING WHILE ON A MULTI-STOP TRIP TO VISIT FAMILY. THIS FIRST OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AND THERE WERE NO OTHER INDICATIONS THAT THERE WAS A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. WHEN I STOPPED FOR GAS THE LIGHT STOPPED FLASHING AND EVERYTHING SEEMED TO BE FINE. I CONTINUED ON TO THE FIRST STOP OF MY TRIP. A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER I DROVE TO THE 2ND STOP OF MY TRIP AND WHILE DRIVING IN AND AROUND TOWN ON THE 2ND DAY THERE THE D STARTED FLASHING AGAIN. I TOOK THE CAR TO A TRANSMISSION SHOP AND WAS ADVISED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS FAILING AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. AT THAT TIME I DID NOT KNOW THAT THERE HAD BEEN A TRANSMISSION RECALL AND SO I AUTHORIZED THE REPAIR. THAT REPAIR WAS A COMPLETE TRANSMISSION REBUILD WHICH COST 2638.42. SINCE FINDING OUT ABOUT THE RECALL AND THE OTHER...
I WAS DUE FOR MY YEARLY VEHICLE INSPECTION. PRIOR TO GETTING THE VEHICLE INSPECTED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR THE INSPECTION AND TOLD THEM THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I WAS THEN TOLD THAT THE CODE THAT CAME UP WAS FOR THE TRANSMISSION AND THAT IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE DID NOT PASS INSPECTION BECAUSE OF THIS AND I WAS ISSUED A PIECE OF PAPER TO PLACE IN THE WINDOW THAT GIVES ME 10 DAYS TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. THE CAR IS A 2004 HONDA PILOT WITH 158470 MILES.IT HAS SHOWN NO SIGNS OF TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. *TR
TRANSMISSION FAIL-DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM: HEAT BUILD UP BETWEEN THE COUNTERSHAFT AND SECONDARY SHAFT SECOND GEARS IN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, EVENTUALLY LEADING TO GEAR TOOTH CHIPPING OR GEAR BREAKAGE. CONTACTED HONDA AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THIS VIN AND BECAUSE THE SERVICE WORK WAS NOT COMPLETED BY HONDA THEY CLAIM NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR DESIGN FLAW. A VERY EXPENSIVE ENGINEERING/DESIGN PROBLEM THAT WAS FLAWED FROM THE BEGINNING AND THEN BURDENED/BLAMED BY HONDA ON THE CONSUMER. *TR
AT SPEEDS OF BETWEEN 30-45 MPH, CAR WOULD SHAKE AND MAKE GRINDING NOISE UNDER THE HOOD. THIS REPEATEDLY HAPPENED FOR YEARS BUT MY DEALER SAID THEY "COUDN'T REPLICATE THE NOISE" AND DID NOT TELL ME THAT IT WAS MY TRANSMISSION. THEN I GET A NOTICE SAYING THERE WAS A TRANSMISSION RECALL ISSUE. THE TWO FIX-IT OPTIONS WERE AN OIL JET KIT AND REPLACE THE TRANNY. THE DEALER GAVE ME A OIL JET KIT, BUT THE TRANSMISSION HAS CONTINUED TO GO BAD EVER SINCE WITH NO OTHER REPLACEMENTS OR OFFER OF REPAIR BY THE DEALER. THIS IS A BAD TRANSMISSION! AMERICAN HONDA HAS OFFERED TO NOW PAY ME 30% OF THE REPLACEMENT COST WHICH WILL STILL COST ME $3500, FOR A REFURBISHED TRANSMISSION. I AM TAKING THIS TO THE TOP- HONDA SHOULD NOT BE HAVING ME PAY FOR A TRANSMISSION THAT THEY KNEW WAS BAD. *TR
WHEN I STARTED THE CAR AND BEGAN DRIVING I NOTICED THAT THE GEAR CHANGE LEVER WAS GLIDING THROUGH R, N, D, ETC. RATHER THAN BEING FIRM IN EACH POSITION. LUCKILY, THE CAR DID NOT FALL OUT OF GEAR. I HAVE SINCE LEARNED FROM THE SHOP THAT THE ONLY THING HOLDING IT IN GEAR AS I DROVE WAS THIS VERY LOOSE LEVER. THIS WAS EXTREMELY UNSAFE TO DRIVE! THE DETERMINATION IS THAT THE SHIFT SELECTOR ASSEMBLY INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION IS BROKEN AND A NEW TRANSMISSION IS REQUIRED. I AM DISMAYED TO SEE HOW MANY HONDAS REQUIRE NEW TRANSMISSIONS, AND AM UPSET THAT DESPITE THE OBVIOUS SAFETY ISSUE, AND THE NUMBER OF PROBLEMS EXPERIENCED, NO RECALL HAS OCCURRED. *TR
OUR PILOT DRIVE LIGHT STARTED FLASHING ONE DAY, WE PULLED OVER, SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE, THEN RESTARTED IT AND THE LIGHT WENT OUT. THIS HAS HAPPENED ABOUT 5 TIMES OVER THE PAST 3 YEARS. NOW OUR ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND WE FOUND OUT THAT WE NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION! WE HAVE LESS THAN 100,000 MI. ALSO, OUR GAS PEDAL STICKS, TO ACCELERATE WE TAKE OFF EXTREMELY FAST FROM A DEAD STOP. MY 2004 PILOT EX-RES STARTED A FAINT WHINING NOISE AROUND 73K MILES. THE NOISE BECAME PROGRESSIVELY MORE PRONOUNCED WITH TIME/MILES. THE NOISE IS ONLY AUDIBLE WHEN PRESSING ON THE GAS PEDAL AND IN THIRD GEAR. AS SOON AS THE GAS PEDAL IS DEPRESSED THE NOISE DISAPPEARS. I HAVE 93K MILES ON THE ODOMETER AS OF MAY 2013 AND THE NOISE IS NOW A HIGH PITCHED WHINING NOISE; IT IS VERY ANNOYING AND EASILY AUDIBLE INSIDE THE CABIN EVEN WITH THE WINDOWS CLOSED. I TOOK IT TO THE HONDA DEALERSHIP TO DIAGNOSE THIS NOISE AND THEY TOLD ME IT IS THE TORQUE CONVERTER AND THAT IT WILL EVENTUALLY FAIL WITH THE TRANSMISSION; THEY ADVISED ME NOT TO DO ANYTHING AT THIS TIME SINCE THE FLUID AND TRANSMISSION PRESSURE LINES ALL CHECKED OUT GOOD. I WAS SURPRISED TO HEAR THIS RECOMMENDATION FROM THE SERVICE ADVISER. I TAKE IMMACULATE CARE OF MY CAR...
YESTERDAY MY HONDA PILOT STARTED ACTING IRREGULAR AS I WAS PULLING INTO A CONTROLLED INTERSECTION TURNING LEFT. MY PILOT WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AS NORMAL AND LEFT ME STRANDED IN MIDDLE OF INTERSECTION AS ONCOMING TRAFFIC APPROACHED. TRAFFIC DID SLOW DOWN AND I SHIFTED INTO 2ND GEAR, AND THAT ALLOWED MY TO MOVE THROUGH SAFELY THROUGH THE INTERSECTION. NO ACCIDENT, JUST A ANGRY YOUNG MAN SHAKING HIS HAND AND SCREAMING THROUGH HIS WINDSHIELD. I CALLED HONDA AND OPEN A CASE # THIS MORNING. INTERESTINGLY, I CALL HONDA AND OPENED UP A CASE IN 2010, WITH SHUDDERING AND VIBRATION PROBLEMS AT 50-55 MPH. I BOUGHT NEW TIRES (ONLY 34K ON BRIDGESTONES), CHANGED DIFFERENTIAL FLUID ,VTM-4, EGR VALUE, EVEN HAD DRIVE SHAFT INSPECTED FOR VIBRATION, ANYTHING THAT WAS SUGGESTED TO ME. NOTHING FIXED ISSUE, SPOKE WITH SEVERAL OTHER PILOT OWNER (2003-2004) AND THEY SUGGESTED IT WAS NORMAL OPERATION AND THEIRS DOES THAT TOO....

MY VEHICLE RUNS GREAT AND SHIFTS VERY SMOOTHLY. MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER USE THIS VEHICLE TO GO BACK AND FORTH TO SCHOOL.
