Consequence: Unintended illumination of the brake lights may confuse other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.

Recall 19V843000 — TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM

| 12,624 vehicles affected

Defect: Harley-Davidson Motor Company (Harley-Davidson) is recalling certain 2019-2020 FLHTCUTG, and FLRT Trike motorcycles. The Trike Traction Control System software may respond incorrectly to a faulty rear wheel speed signal by activating one of the rear brakes.

Consequence: Unintended activation of one rear brake could lead to an unexpected change in vehicle direction which may increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Harley-Davidson has notified owners, and dealers will update the traction control system software, free of charge. The recall began December 2, 2019. Owners may contact Harley-Davidson customer service at 1-800-258-2464. Harley-Davidson's number for this recall is 0175.

The motorcycle was towed to the local service center who diagnosed that the reverse motor was faulty and needed to be replaced. The reverse motor was replaced, and the vehicle was fixed. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 28,000.

The contact owned a 2019 Harley- Davidson FLHTCUTG. The contact stated that while riding approximately 75 mph, the motorcycle made a sudden and radical turn to the left. The contact was able to regain control of the steering but approximately thirty minutes later the motorcycle made a sudden and radical turn to the right causing the contact to lose control of the motorcycle and crash. No further information on the crash was available. During the crash, the contact sustained severe injuries which include fractured cervical and lumbar vertebras, fractured ribs, and head trauma. A police report was taken at the scene. The motorcycle was destroyed and towed away. The cause of the failure was not determined. The contact indicated that the vehicle had experienced the same failure listed in the NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V843000(Service Brakes). The manufacturer was notified of the incident and informed that the motorcycle was previously serviced under the recall listed above. The local dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 4,635.

The contact owns a 2019 Harley-Davidson FLHTCUTG Tri Glide Ultra motorcycle. The contact stated that while starting the motorcycle, the brake light was illuminated. The vehicle was hauled by trailer to the dealer and diagnosed that the brake sensor for the ABS was faulty however, the sensor part for the repair was on backorder. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure may be related to a software update that was performed on the traction control. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 9,477.
