ON 7/27/11 WHILE DRIVING MY 2002 FORD TAURUS WHICH HAS APPROX 41000 MILES I HEARD A LOUD BANG FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. AFTER ARRIVING AT MY HOME I DISCOVERED THAT THE RIGHT HAND FRONT COIL SPRING HAD BROKEN. ALTHOUGH I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO MY HOUSE THIS COULD HAVE TURNED INTO A DANGEROUS SITUATION HAD THE BROKEN SPRING PUNCTURED THE TIRE. *KB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 FORD TAURUS XL. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 5 MILES PER HOUR MAKING A TURN THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT COIL SPRINGS BROKE, AND PUNCTURED THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT TIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BY A PRIVATE MECHANIC. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000, AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 83,000. WE DISCOVERED OUR 2002 TAURUS IN THE DRIVEWAY WITH A COMPLETELY FLAT TIRE. UPON REMOVAL OF THE TIRE TO PUT ON A TEMP TIRE WE DISCOVERED THE COIL (FRONT PASSENGER) HAD BROKEN AND HAD PUNCTURED THE TIRE (IT WAS ACTUALLY THROUGH THE TIRE AND WE HAD TO WORK TO GET IT OUT OF THE TIRE). LUCKILY NO ONE WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 FORD TAURUS SES. THE CONTACTS STATED WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH HE HEARD A LOUD NOISE, THEN THE FRONT LEFT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE FELL ONTO THE GROUND. THE VEHICLE WAS COASTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHERE HE NOTICED THAT THE FRONT SPRING HAD FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED BY A DEALER NOR WAS IT REPAIRED. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED HIM THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC ADVISED HIM THAT HE WAS AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND THE SPRING NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 118,000.
THIS MORNING AS I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY, I HEARD A GRINDING SOUND COMING FROM THE FRONT PASSENGER TIRE. I STOPPED THE CAR AND LOOKED UNDER THE CAR TO CHECK FOR OBSTRUCTIONS. I THEN TURNED THE CAR AROUND AND BACKED IT BACK INTO THE DRIVEWAY. I BEGAN TO PULL FORWARD SLOWLY, ATTEMPTING TO DETERMINE IF THE NOISE WAS FROM THE BRAKE. AT THAT POINT THE TIRE BLEW, AND THE WAS A LOUD POP. UPON REMOVING THE TIRE, I WAS ABLE TO SEE THE COIL AROUND THE STRUT HAD EMBEDDED ITSELF INTO THE SIDEWALL OF THE TIRE, AND TORE A RING ALL THE WAY AROUND. IT LOOKS AS IF I TRIED TO OPEN THE TIRE WITH A CAN OPENER. AFTER REMOVING THE STRUT AND THE COIL, I WAS ABLE TO SEE THAT A PIECE OF THE COIL HAD SNAPPED OFF UP NEAR THE TOP. AFTER LOOKING AT THE POINT...

THE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED AND THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE TIRE HAD BEEN PUNCTURED BY THE COIL SPRING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO HAVE THE FAILURE DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 148,000.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY ADVISED HIM THAT HE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN ANY RECALLS AND WOULD PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 80,000.
BROKEN LEFT FRONT COIL SPRING WHILE DRIVING AT 35 MPH WHICH RESULTED IN DAMAGE TO THE LEFT FRONT TIRE AS WELL AS OTHER SUSPENSION AND DRIVE AXLE COMPONENTS. THIS IS SIMILAR TO THE CURRENT INVESTIGATION NHTSA EA08-018. NO INJURIES OR CRASH RESULTED. *TR
THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE SPRING BROKE AND PUNCTURED THE TIRE ON MY 2002 FORD TAURUS. IT WAS PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY AND WHEN I WENT TO DRIVE IT FAILED. I HAVE SEEN ON FORUMS THAT THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE WITH OTHER PEOPLE AND FORD HAD RECALLS UNTIL 2001 FOR THE EXACT ISSUE. THERE IS A DEFECT INVESTIGATION GOING ON. THE SPRING OF THE FRONT STRUT ASSEMBLY ON MY 2002 FORD TAURUS BROKE IN HALF WHILE DRIVING THE CAR. THERE WAS NO RUST OF ANY KIND AROUND IT. THE STRUT ASSEMBLY WAS THE ORIGINAL ONE FORM THE FORD FACTORY. I SAW ONLINE THAT THIS IS A COMMON AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ISSUE FOR WHICH FORD ISSUED A RECALL THAT GOES UP TO 2001 MODELS. I WONDER WHY NEWER MODELS WERE NOT INCLUDED IF THE ISSUE WAS NEVER RESOLVED. *TR

HAD TO REPLACE STRUT AND SPRINGS, AND OF COURSE IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT BOTH FRONT STRUTS + SPRINGS BE REPLACED. HE DECIDED TO PLACE THE SPARE TIRE ON THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT A WIRE WAS FRACTURED THAT HAD PUNCTURED THE TIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY A INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO ADVISED HIM THAT THE COIL SPRINGS FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 79,000.
JUST STARTING BACKING UP AND HEARD AND LOUD SOUND AND THEN THE TIRE WENT FLAT. TRIED TO CHANGE THE TIRE BUT COULD NOT GET IT OFF. I FOUND THAT THE SPRING HAD BROKE AND WENT THROUGH THE TIRE. CALLED AAA AND THEY SAID THIS WAS COMMON WITH THE 2002 TAURUS AND THAT I WAS LUCKY IT HAPPEN WHILE I WAS NOT DRIVING ON THE ROAD. VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BEFORE PEOPLE GET KILLED. *TR
2002 FORD TAURUS SEL: DRIVING AT 40 MPH, PASSENGER'S SIDE SPRING BROKE AND IMMEDIATELY CUT ENTIRE INSIDE DIAMETER OF CAR TIRE. CAR IMMEDIATELY PULLED HARD TO THE RIGHT AND WAS NOT DRIVABLE. CAR WAS DAMAGED AS WELL AS LAWN THAT CAR SWERVED ONTO. HAD TO HAVE SPRING AND TIRE REPLACED, REPLACED DRIVER SIDE AS WELL. COST WAS OVER $550. 6 MONTHS LATER AT INSPECTION REAR SPRING WAS BROKEN AND HAD ANOTHER $450 EXPENSE. ONLINE SEARCH SHOWS THIS IS A COMMON COMPLAINT AND RE-CALL SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO 2002 FORD TAURUS. *TR

THE FAILURE RECURRED TWICE AND THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BY A LOCAL DEALER THE FIRST FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED FOR THE SECOND FAILURE. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER IN REFERENCE TO AN UNKNOWN RELATED MANUFACTURER RECALL BUT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 121,200 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 71,000.

THE CONTACT DID NOT INFORM THE MANUFACTURER NOR WAS THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,000.

THIS WINTER I HAD MY RIGHT FRONT STRUT SPRING BREAK AS I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY AND THE SPRING WENT RIGHT THROUGH MY TIRE. THE NOISE SOUNDED LIKE AN EXPLOSION AND SCARED ME TO DEATH! MY HUSBAND GOT THE SPRING AND STRUT REPAIRED AND PURCHASED A NEW TIRE. I THOUGHT THIS WAS AN ISOLATED PROBLEM UNTIL I WALKED OUT TODAY AND SAT IN MY CAR TO GO TO WORK. I HAD NOT TURNED THE CAR ON, OR EVEN TOUCHED THE STEERING WHEEL AND AGAIN I HEARD THE SAME LOUD NOISE AND NOW THE SPRING ON THE LEFT SIDE BROKE. I AM ALSO GOING TO CHECK THE BACK TIRES BECAUSE MY CAR SITS AT A FUNNY ANGLE AND I WOULD GUESS THE THE SPRING ON THE LEFT REAR IS ABOUT TO BREAK. *TR
I INITIALLY NOTICED A METAL-ON-METAL GRINDING SOUND WHEN I DROVE OVER BUMPS IN THE ROAD (LIKE MY SHOCKS WERE BAD). I HAD THE 2002 TAURUS EXAMINED AT MY FORD DEALER, AND THE MECHANIC SAID ONE OF THE FRONT COIL SPRINGS WAS BAD. HE ALSO SAID HE WAS SURPRISED THE FRONT TIRE HADN'T BLOWN OUT. HE ADVISED THAT I HAVE BOTH FRONT SPRINGS REPLACED AT THE SAME TIME, WHICH I DID. *TR

THE RECALL WAS ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 04V332000 (SUSPENSION:FRONT:SPRINGS:COIL SPRINGS). THE CONTACTS YEAR VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 78,000.

ON 23 FEBRUARY 2011 I PUT MY 2002 FORD TAURUS IN REVERSE ON MY CARPORT, AND I HEARD A LOUD BANG NOISE.THE CAR LURCHED TO THE LEFT A MADE A LOUD THUD SOUND HITTING HARD ON THE CARPORT FLOOR. I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND GOT OUT TO SEE WHAT HAD HAPPENED. THE LEFT FRONT COIL SPRING HAD BROKE AND WAS THRUST INTO THE LEFT TIRE. ALSO, THE SPRING HIT THE TOP OF THE NYLON STABILIZER BREAKING PART OF THE TOP AND THROWING THE COVER OF THE BALL JOINT ON THE FLOOR. *TR

A SPARE TIRE WAS INSTALLED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP WHERE THE CONTACT WAS TOLD THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE COIL SPRING PIERCED THE TIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 124,368 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 124,668.

THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT HIS VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE PREVIOUS RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 134,000.
WHILE DRIVING MY 2002 FORD TAURUS, A LOUD MECHANICAL SNAP WAS HEARD, FOLLOWED (ABOUT TWO SECONDS LATER) BY BLOWOUT OF THE LEFT FRONT TIRE. THE CAR SWERVED OUT OF IT'S LANE, INTO A SNOW BANK ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD (WE HAD 10" OF SNOW THAT DAY). WHEN THE TOW TRUCK LIFTED THE CAR, I SAW THAT THE LEFT FRONT COIL SPRING HAD SNAPPED, AND THE METAL HAD PUNCTURED THE INSIDE WALL OF THE TIRE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO ATCHINSON FORD, BELLEVILLE, MI, WHERE IT WILL BE EVALUATED IN THE MORNING. *TR

THE VEHICLE HAD WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 120,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT HE NEEDED TO REPLACE THE STRUT AND COIL SPRINGS. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 89,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
DRIVING DOWN A STRAIGHT ROAD, HIT A SMALL BUMP, LEFT FRONT COIL SPRING BROKE. LOUD BANG AND CAR BECAME HARD TO CONTROL. A PIECE OF THE BROKEN COIL SPRING JAMMED INTO THE CV (CONSTANT VELOCITY) JOINT AND DESTROYED IT. ALSO THE STABILIZER LINK WAS BROKEN. FORD TAURUS 2002 LEFT FRONT SPRING COIL SNAPPED. DRIVING INTO PARKING LOT, MAKING A RIGHT TURN AT 5 MPH, LOUD BANG AND THE LEFT FRONT OF CAR DROPPED. INSPECTING THE DAMAGE, FOUND THE TOP OF THE SPRING, THE FIRST FULL CIRCLE, SNAPPED COMPLETELY OFF. LOOKING AT THE INTERIOR OF THE SNAPPED SECTION, NOTICED A PATCH OF DISCOLORATION IN THE CRACKED SECTION. THIS MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY A CRACK IN THE SPRING AND HAD BEEN SUBJECTED TO THE ELEMENTS FOR A PERIOD OF TIME. REPLACING COIL AT LOCAL GARAGE. *TR
ON 1/10, I WAS ON MY WAY TO DROP MY KIDS OFF AT THEIR SCHOOL WHEN THE CAR BEGAN TO DRIVE FUNNY.I PULLED OVER RIGHT AWAY AND SAW THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE WAS BLOWN..I PROCEEDED TO CHANGE THE TIRE TO MY DONUT WHEN I SAY THE GASH IN MY TIRE AND I LOOKED AT THE WHEEL WELL AND SAW THE SPRING WAS SHEERED OFF..HENCEFORTH I HAD TO PAY TO GET NEW STRUTS AND A NEW TIRE AND A NEW STABILIZER FOR MY CAR..I LOOKED ON THE WEB AND SAW A BUNCH OF PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM WITH THEIR 2002 FORD TAURUS..PLEASE HELP. *TR
FRONT DRIVERS SIDE SPRING BROKE AND PIERCED TIRE. TIRE IS DESTROYED AND CAR IS INOPERABLE. *TR
2002 FORD TAURUS SES WITH APROX 125K MILES FRONT LEFT COIL SPRING BROKE ABOUT SIX INCHES FROM THE BOTTOM END, THE SPRING EXTENDED TO THE NEXT COIL, THE BROKEN END CUT THROUGH THE FRONT LEFT TIRE. THE FRONT LEFT TIRE LOOKED AS IF IT WAS CUT WITH A RAZOR, THE SPRING COMPLETELY SEVERED THE TIRE AT THE JUNCTION OF THE TOP OF THE SIDE WALL AND THE TREAD. BOTH SIDES OF THE TIRE REMAINED SEATED ON THE RIM. THE SPRING BROKE WHEN BACKING OUT OF A DRIVE THAT IS LEVEL WITH THE STREET. THE OPERATOR HEARD A CLUNK AND THOUGHT THAT ICE HAD BROKEN FREE FROM THE FENDER, AS EXPERIENCED IN WINTER OPERATIONS. THE CAR WAS OPERATED 100 FEET THEN THE OPERATOR FELT THE FLAT TIRE. THE FRONT LEFT CORNER OF THE CAR WAS LOW TO THE GROUND WITHOUT THE FULL SUPPORT OF THE SPRING THE LEFT FRONT SWAY BAR...

CHRISTMAS MORNING I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY WHEN A LOUD POPPING NOISE OCCURRED. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE SPRING HAS FRACTURED. I WAS LUCKY TO BE AT HOME DRIVING AT A LOW SPEED. HOWEVER, THIS IS THE SECOND TIME IN 6 MONTHS THAT I HAVE HAD A SPRING FRACTURE ON ME. BACK IN JUNE 2010 I HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCE WITH THE RIGHT REAR SPRING. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY UN-DRIVABLE AND MUST BE TOWED TO A SHOP FOR ASSESSMENT AND REPAIR. PARTS WILL LIKELY NEED TO BE REPLACED AND I HOPE THERE ISN'T MORE DAMAGE THAN NEEDING THE SPRING AND POTENTIALLY THE TIRE REPLACED.
