2023 VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 Structurebody Problems

My 2023 VW ID4 has experienced multiple system failures/malfunctions (e.g., display, backup camera, climate controls, & speedometer failed) beginning in late November 2025. The following is a summary & an approximate timeline: Nov 4, 2025: “OUE7 – Software Update” email; dealer unable to complete (OTA update). Nov 7 & Nov 21, 2025: Weatherstrip repairs; maintenance inspections performed. Nov 30, 2025: Doors randomly unlocked; front, passenger door failed to latch; intermittent door popper issue. Door handles were previously replaced on Apr 2, 2025. Dec 14, 2025: Incorrect dynamic road signs/speed limits; vehicle mis‑positioned on maps; warnings: 1. “No data is available” 2. “Dynamic road sign display unavailable.” Dec 22, 2025: Major failures documented in photographs below: 1. door-handle safety recall had previously been completed on this vehicle. While driving at normal city speed, the front passenger door opened unexpectedly while a passenger was seated inside, creating a serious safety risk. The passenger was restrained by a seat belt, preventing ejection. The vehicle was taken to a Volkswagen dealership, which inspected the vehicle and documented that multiple door latch bolts were missing and another bolt was loose following a Volkswagen-authorized door-handle repair. The dealership stated the condition was related to prior repair workmanship. There were no warning lamps or messages prior to the failure. Due to safety concerns, the vehicle was towed rather than driven after the incident. The vehicle remains available for inspection.

There has been an active recall on this vehicle for one year. The dealership has failed to repair the door handle recall in a timely manner. The dealerships I have called said they don’t have the parts in stock to repair the recall.

The right rear passenger door has become completely inoperable. It cannot be opened from the inside or outside of the vehicle. This is a critical safety risk because two child car seats are installed in the back, and the right side is the only accessible exit for an adult passenger. In the event of an accident or emergency, that adult would not be able to exit the vehicle. Additionally, the rear trunk has also intermittently failed to open since purchase. Both issues have been reported to the dealership. The trunk issue was previously noted but not repaired, and the door issue, which was intermittent at first, has now become a full failure. I was driving my car and the door came unlocked and opened

VW failed to perform the repairs associated with recall 24V651 because the necessary parts are not available despite months of leadtime. It costs me $80 each time I bring my car in. It is currently at the dealership and they have no eta for the parts.

I've had to replace the 12v battery in my ID.4 due to battery failure twice since I've owned it, and according to the service department at VW, the battery was replaced on delivery too. So that's a total of three batteries since it came off the production line. I'm also having issues with my doors handles not working properly and haven't been able to have the open recall performed on my vehicle due to backordered parts. It's been more than 6 months since the issue started and I still don't have any updates. The infotainment screen randomly blanks out while driving and is especially problematic when I'm backing the car up because the backup camera cuts out and is a huge safety issue. I have a Manufacturer Compliance Recall and a Manufacturer Safety Recall outstanding, neither of which the manufacturer can fix. I have called the dealership multiple times to make an appointment to have them fixed, but they do not yet have the remedies available. I have had multiple problems with this car from the day I got it on November 6, 2023. I get errors that pop up constantly on the screen, but they come and go so quickly while I'm driving that I can barely read them, much less take a photo. One of them says maneuver braking is not available. My screen goes out and flashes constantly, but again, it happens so quickly that I can't get photos while I'm driving. The dash is blank and white in color, no speedometer or information necessary to drive the vehicle. Doors do not unlock or lock.

There has been no update regarding the open recalls on the ID4 from Volkswagen. The 919A/24V344 recall is over 5 months old with no update from Volkswagen and the 57J9/24V651 recall for the door handles has no update from Volkswagen at all.

back right door opened up while driving through our neighborhood at slow speed turning onto another street a few months ago. at the time didn't think much of it and maybe just a fluke but it makes sense now that I know there's a door handle recall. also now our driver side outside door handle won't open as of a few days ago and our VW dealer doesn't know what's going on after trying to fix it and waiting for corporate to call them back. wanted to make sure this was reported in the event we have further issues and they cant repair it. thanks

The rear passenger door got stuck and did not open while we were inside. My son tried to open it and it was just stuck. The other 3 doors in the car opened fine. I locked and unlocked/turned the child locks on and off/ turned the car on and off and nothing would open the door from the interior. My son was stuck. I recorded 3 minutes of all these things going on. Finally, I could open the door from the outside of the car. The door has been malfunctioning (not closing, opening on its own, or getting stuck) since I purchased the vehicle 18 months ago. The dealer initially refused to inspect bc they could not replicate but I started taking videos. One month ago they had replaced the latch and other components but it did not fix the problem. The car is back in service.

Was stationary in dense traffic, all waiting for a local bridge to open. We had been waiting for 10 or so minutes. Had braked and stopped close to car in front, car in Auto Hold. All of a sudden, my car accelerated quickly into stationary car in front, twice I believe, before I was able to brake and turn car off. I do not know why this happened or whether there were any warnings. Affected my car, car in front of me, and car in front of them. No one hurt, my car front rather damaged, perhaps $12,000+, car in front damaged front and rear. We were able to drive away, but my car not safe to drive. Is currently parked and waiting to be towed once collision shop space is available. I have not taken to dealer to test as is not safe to drive. No one has inspected...

Driver door locks cycles while driving. Sometimes door will open while car is moving.

While the vehicle was in driving on the street, and when we stopped at the streetlight the vehicle went to parking mode, and the drivers door suddenly got opened.

The rear passenger door does not close properly. I first noticed this when I got home from the dealer the day I purchased it. I contacted them right away but the dealer said there was nothing they could do. 6 weeks later the doors were recalled and I got the recall fix. It kept happening. The dealer will not take any further action because they cannot replicate when I drop off for a service call. They won't even take the car. I have photos and videos. I called VW NA and they said there is no issue. Puts safety of passengers at risk.

2023 VW ID.4 - While driving the passenger door latch started making a clicking noise and door became ajar triggering a door ajar light on dash information center. Passenger held door from completely opening until it was safe to pull over. Door latch continued to make clicking noises and continued to open itself. A google search revealed recall campaign "Door handle recall 57J5 [NHTSA 23V312] for MY21 and MY22" It was raining out when this happened. Volkswagen clearly hasn't fixed this issue for MY23.

I submitted a previous report regarding my passenger front door attempting to open while the vehicle was in motion. Yesterday the door fully opened under motion with my wife as a passenger. It sounds like the latch kept cycling until the door opened. My wife just prior to departure decided to start video recording while driving as we both believed the dealer may not be able to replicate the incidents. We have recording of this we can email. The door does attempt to open several times on some days, some days it doesn't. My vehicle according to the dealer is not a part of the affected vin's for the recall. It has not been back to the dealer for evaluation and repair yet. This has become an extremely dangerous situation as an owner or passenger.

Per the existing recall on my vehicle, the driver’s side door handle has failed. It will unlatch at random times (including when driving at speeds between 1-20 mph), it will not unlatch when attempting to get into the vehicle, and the sensors have started to fail causing the car to believe the door is open when it isn’t which has caused the car to do an emergency stop on several occasions while it was in motion. This luckily hasn’t led to a collision yet but it easily could. I took the vehicle in to be inspected back in May 2023 when my dealership notified me they had the equipment to inspect the handle. 29987 miles 11/3/2023 – I brought my vehicle to Findlay VW Henderson NV for the 30,000-mile service, the 12V electrical issue, and the door handle recall. Andrew Lammers, the service consultant told me they’d check everything out while my vehicle was in the shop and before releasing it back to me. I received a call about a week later that there were parts hold. On 11/17 I was advised my vehicle was ready. I was told the 12V battery, high voltage system, and electrical were tested and were okay. 4-wheel alignment, front assist, and lane assist systems were also recalibrated. I was assured I shouldn’t have any electrical issues any longer. I picked my vehicle up 11/18, one day after I was notified it was finished.

Optical Windshield Distortion The distortion is noticeable on the drivers and passenger sides of the windshield where it meets the vertical frames of the body. They are approximately 2-3 inches wide running the full vertical length. The distortion is clearly visible in full light, affecting peripheral vision of approaching vehicle movement or other passing external sources of glare day and night. They are not visible when the windshield is in shade. The dealership affirmed the malady and submitted a warranty claim to VW regarding the material defect (07/20/23). It was authorized and the windshield was replaced (10/27/23). The replacement windshield has visible distortion as well; affirmed again by dealership service staff. The 2nd warranty claim was denied by Volkswagen. Their reason, related by the dealership service staff, "was that all windshields have distortion". Since we purchased the vehicle in December, 2022, the doors have been unable to open on at least nine occasions, sometimes locking passengers in the vehicle, and sometimes locking passengers out of the vehicle. Using the remote key does not allow the doors to open, only making a clicking sound. As we approach the hot summer months, it is a safety risk to not be able to exit the vehicle. In addition, it is a safety risk to not be able to get into the vehicle when needed. The vehicle has been taken to two different dealerships on three occasions. The service advisor at Lindsay Volkswagen of Dulles, VA commented five times while the vehicle was being picked up that he did not believe the vehicle was safe to drive and he wouldn't drive in it with his family. The dealerships were forced to return the vehicle against their judgment...

Please see attached document. This is my second filing. I am still waiting for acknowledgment from NHTSA of my original filing on 3/22/23. The situation is only getting worse.

In brief, the front passenger door unlocks and unlatches while the car is in motion. This happens frequently, unpredictably, whether the car is stationary, in reverse, forward or at various speeds. There is. no warning or indication that the problem is happening, other than the door unlatching. We've brought the vehicle into an authorized service center and brought this concern to VW Customer Care's attention. In both cases we were informed that this is a known problem *but there is no part available, and no ETA for the part to be available*.

Driver's door is malfunctioning: Randomly popped open while at a stoplight without being touched. Won't open from the outside via the handle. Central locking function of the car is not working properly (doors don't lock while at speed like they normally do). The car is now at dealership waiting for repair; am told the necessary replacement door handle part is on a nationwide backorder with VW with no estimate given for arrival and completed repair.

The driver side door unlocks and opens itself while I am driving the vehicle. In addition, while I am driving, the door opening or locking mechanism (I am unsure which) can be heard moving although this does not always lead to the door opening itself.

Second day after purchasing the new car, WHILE DRIVING the front passenger door just swung open. I thought it was not closed properly, but it kept happening again! I took it to the dealer and was informed that they are seeing multiple cars with the same issue. It is a huge safety issue and it seems that these electronic door handles cannot handle cold and keep malfunctioning. The car is at the dealer right now and VW does not have the parts to fix it or is afraid to address the issue. It's a new car, I drove it for a few days and it has been sitting at the dealer for TWO MONTHS without any resolution in sight! Rear passenger side door constantly locking and unlocking itself while vehicle is in motion and then opening itself while vehicle is in motion, going 30+ mph when it is supposed to be locked closed.

Drivers door will not open from exterior and occasionally interior. Parts on back order. Serious safety issue. VW America will not give me a loaner therefore making me crawl through my car to get in. Key fob is supposed to open all windows simultaneously however that is also faulty. I feel this car is an absolute death trap. When I’m reverse, if your body slightly lifts off seat, car comes to a screeching hault. Making it impossible to backup without solely relying on review camera. Many times camera is not sufficient for visual backup.

The drivers side door no longer opens from the outside of the Vehicle, I have to climb over the passenger seat to enter the car. Yes available for inspection In an emergency situation I would not be able to enter the vehicle from the drivers side, and it’s unclear if it will fail further and prevent exit from the vehicle Yes the dealer has confirmed the issue There are no warning lamps The biggest issue is the manufacturer has no date for a fix. I am having the (seemingly common) problem of a malfunctioning driver's door handle/latch. The safety issues are: A) the door will sometimes pop itself open while driving - it happened to me while making a right turn and I had to grab the open door with my hand; B) on one occasion I was unable to open the driver door from inside the vehicle, and had to climb out the passenger side; C) I also consider it a safety issue that I cannot lock the car to protect who/what is inside. The car starting having this issue around 1,000 miles, and is currently at the dealer waiting for a backordered part. I wanted to report this because, anecdotally, there are many others with the issue who are also waiting for a fix, and I don't think VWoA has the organizational ability to fix them voluntarily, nor enough qualified EV technicians.

While stopped at a red light, the passenger door opened unprompted & by itself twice. I tried to lock the door on the driver panel, however that seemed to not work as the light did not illuminate signaling the doors locked. When I began driving, the same door opened again by itself. This is a major safety risk to have the doors open by themselves while driving.
