My 2022 VW ID.4 Pro S has experienced a total failure of the GPS and telematics system (J949 module), causing a dangerous 'GPS Drift' where the vehicle reports its location miles away from its actual position. This creates two severe safety hazards: Automated System Malfunction: The Travel Assist and Dynamic Road Sign systems are receiving conflicting data. The camera correctly identifies a speed limit (e.g., 40 mph), but the faulty GPS overrides it with incorrect map data (e.g., 25 mph). This causes the vehicle to unexpectedly and dangerously decelerate while in active traffic. Emergency Service Failure: The eCall (Emergency Call) system is reporting the wrong location. In the event of a serious crash, emergency responders would be directed to a location miles away from the actual accident site. My dealer provided written documentation (attached) stating there is 'NO FIX' currently for 2021-2023 models, as they are hardware-locked to a failing...
Electrical gremlins present at time of purchase (3/14/2025). Entered service and repair on 3/17/2025 and remained for 30-45 days. Upon coming to retrieve vehicle electrical malfunctions still present upon entering vehicle in the service bay, alerted advisor. Car was checked back into service immediately and remained for 60-90 days. Between March and December I have had continuous electrical gremlins present from Dashboard and display malfunction, interior lights malfunction, trunk/doors/locks/windows malfunction to no end and no repair in sight. This specific vehicle is a lemon and riddled with irreparable electrical gremlins, it has cost me significant income loss and loss of faith in the reliability of Volkswagen brand that I love so much.
On [XXX], my 2022 Volkswagen I.D. 4 burst into flames and exploded while it was parked in my apartment complex parking structure ([XXX] ). My car was completely engulfed in flames, nearby cars as well as the parking structure experienced heat damage. My life and others were put in danger because even though my car was electric, it was parked in a resident garage near other cars who are gas operated, which could have caused an even more catastrophic damage if the fire would've spread more. Dallas Fire Department was present, and a fire report was conducted (Incident number #[XXX]). As of today, the vehicle has only been inspected by the Dallas Fire department, as well as a virtual video meeting with my insurance agent from Allstate. Before the incident the car charged normally, was operating normally and there was no indication or warning signs to indicate that there were...
I purchased this vehicle on [XXX] from Sunnyvale Volkswagen and have experienced ongoing issues with the electrical system, infotainment, safety features, and OTA software updates. In early 2023, all error lights came on while driving, followed by a complete electrical system failure. The car would not restart until the next day. In 2024 and again in 2025, the center screen went completely black, disabling the rearview camera, hands-free navigation, climate control, and car settings. Restart attempts failed. On Feb 26, 2025, I accepted an OTA software update, which failed. I tried again on Feb 27. When I returned to the car later that day, the update was still running. The next day, the car would not unlock with either key. I tried the manual key over an hour and hundred times, which eventually worked, but the keys still weren’t recognized. I replaced both key batteries with new ones from the...
I use this car for work daily, see patients in their homes. The driver door won’t locked, for 2 consecutive days and this is not the first time incident. Whenever this happens, I notify the dealer but they said VW does not have repair/solution to it yet. So, the car’s safety features (emergency braking, lane departure assist, adaptive cruise control and etc) are not functional. This makes it dangerous for us/drivers. Because the door is unlocked and car is running, it sends signals/sounds warning the door is unlocked. It is terrifying driving the car while it’s raining. I am unsure if the car will suddenly stop. Also, the anti-fog doesn’t work unless I turn on the heater which reduces my mileage. I can barely see the road when it’s pouring rain. The car doesn’t charge to its usual 200 miles at 80% (recommended), only charging 180 miles at 90%. Hope...
I took the car to the Dealership for recalls (#1 Cochoran VW, Wexford, PA) on [XXX]. The dealership has not been able to complete the repair and the car has been at the dealership for almost three months. The dealership employees have been in contact with Volkswagen of America and with individuals in Germany but to no satisfaction. We have spent several hundred dollars on gasoline that we would not have spent as the car in question is an EV (VW ID-4 Model year 2022 with 31,000 miles. We are now fearful that the car will be returned to us in an unsafe condition and are even fearful to get NHTSA involved as the company may hurriedly return the vehicle to us without completing the "RECALL". INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Some lights come on and off without buttons being pressed. Door click. Doesn’t consistently lock or unlock. Center console turns off with no notice.
-car had large fuse blown while charging causing electrical failure.
All is sudden I hear clicking noice from doors that make scary to drive the car with Kids. Couple of times it unlocked the rear passenger door. I had to to pull over to close and move. It’s been 2 years there are no software updates and center console struck, not responsive , some times reboot automatically, some times we need to force restart and rear camera doesn’t appear.
Car door opened on its own. Sometimes infotainment display goes black and becomes unusable.
There are 2 recalls on my vehicle that have been out there for many months with no resolution or updates from VW. 1 involves all screens locking up or going blank. the other involves the door opening on it's own. both are serious safety concerns

Software issues and door handle recall that VW has no fix
The door locks failed again on the same door that had opened while in motion in December of 2023. This time the door failed to open when trying to exit the car. Also while driving it kept clicking inside as it was trying to open while vehicle was in motion. This occurred Mid September 2024. Also the ADAS system failed while driving and car wanted to steer on wrong way had to fight with the steering. This was also addressed in 2023. This car had all recalled done related to doors and had two failures in less then a year. This car is a safety risk to people. I have documentation to support all these findings.
The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact stated that the vehicle was hard to charge. The vehicle failed to charge after placing on the charger. There was an abnormal burning smell detected. While driving 60-70 MPH, the screen became inoperable. While driving, the screen went blank but then illuminated as designed. The contact rebooted the computer and the computer reset. There were no warning lights illuminated. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The manufacturer suggested to the contact that an electrician check the house. The electrician confirmed the electrical outlets were working as designed....
I’ve had a recall on this car for over 4 months and the dealership/brand hasn’t been able to fix the car yet. I recently got another recall that looks it won’t be fixed because, as the first one, the repairs are not yet available. The dashboard and the screen every now and then will go off and reset as if I was turning the car on. It has happened when the car is moving. My car is loosing value due to this recalls because it’s reported and I don’t feel safe driving and thinking that the car might suddenly go off in the middle of the road
The dashboard and user interface for the vehicle resets, crashes, reboots, crashes and reboots while driving constantly. The dash and entire console is affected. We have had it serviced at least three times for this issue and it has not been remedied even though VW has done full module replacements. The doors also unlock and lock and unlock and lock repeatedly. We no longer feel safe driving the vehicle because the center console will not remain on for more than a few minutes before starting a crash-reboot cycle.
For the past couple of months, noticing an issue where the main Display in center and also Dashboard above the steering wheel goes pitch black with nothing being displayed while driving. A few times, I was driving on the highway and all screens were black, I could not see what speed I was going at. #2: CarPlay is constantly rebooting every 2 seconds, disconnecting and connecting but e not continuously connected #3 CarPlay automatically connects when I am not in the car but in the living room. None of this observations happened in the first 2 years of my ownership but happening now, I have taken an appt with VW dealer but issue is intermittent, it just goes away without me doing anything.

The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V344000 (Back Over Prevention, Equipment, Electrical System); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the instrument cluster and the back-up camera display started rebooting independently, after starting the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent but became a recurring failure for more than a year. The contact had not made the manufacturer aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 500. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

The vehicle was returned to the dealer and a hard reset was performed; however, the failure reoccurred. The failure had occurred approximately 2 to 3 times after the radio was replaced. The dealer was contacted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 5,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The contact was able to pull over to the shoulder of the roadway, where the failure persisted, and a message displayed "Danger - High Voltage Battery Failure". After restarting the vehicle, the vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who determined that a software update needed to be performed. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred months later. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 30.

My backup camera does not work and hasn't worked for almost a year. There is no solution, and it just now got recalled today, but there is no fix. It is incredibly dangerous to drive this car with the reduced size of the rear window plus wide, oversized quarter panels, and no backup camera. Add to this the fact that my driver's side door doesn't open. Not when I'm trying to get in to it and often when I'm trying to get out. I climb over the passenger seat every single time I want to get into the car and sometimes when I want to get out.
While driving on the rt 84 near Hartford CT on July 13th the screen for the car went black and was not usable for some time until it restarted/reset, during this period there was no access to ADAS settings and the parking camera and sensors would not have been usable. This disruptive crash also makes for a dangerous situation where navigation guidance is suddenly no longer available.
The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the charging indicator message displayed on the instrument panel, after which the vehicle lost motive power. The contact was able to pull to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle continued to indicate that it was connected to a charging station and being charged, preventing the vehicle from restarting. The charging warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but informed the contact that assistance could not be provided because the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. The failure mileage was 34,000.
The window is going down when I am trying to close the window. somehow the car is trigerring pinch protection on daily uses and keep opening the window down ! I have video i want to share but i cannot upload videos here
The Marin Volkswagen dealer informs me that the JX4 electric drive motor, control electronics 2 and high voltage control module on my 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 all failed and need to be replaced. I am informed that a Volkswagen field representative went out to the Marin dealership and confirmed the necessity of these repairs. On [XXX], 2024, I was driving in the fast lane of [XXX] at a speed of somewhere between 65 /70 miles per hour when I heard a loud "pop" sound and a warning appeared on my dashboard indicating a system failure and warning me to immediately pull over. I had lost all motor power and had to use whatever remaining momentum I had to immediately get over to the right hand shoulder in rush hour traffic. Mine and the safety of all other drivers in the area were compromised because I could have been rear-ended at high...
The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact stated while driving at approximately 50 MPH, the instrument panel turned off and was completely black. The contact stated that the driver assistance systems and the speedometer were unavailable. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure was not duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure recurred and the vehicle was taken to the same dealer; however, the failure was not duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 24,000.
While driving the vehicle, the digital speedometer, instrument panel, and entertainment system will completely turn off and reset. This happens rarely, but has happened several times. The photo I am uploading is of the instrument panel immediately after it reset. The speedometer is a different color than usual and the entertainment system is asking to log in again.
The vehicle’s forward collision warning, the land departure warning, the rear cross traffic warning, the blind spot monitoring have all been having issues since the first week of the car. I’ve taken the car into the shop over 10 times since the summer of 2022 on initial purchase. Each time the vehicle comes in and Volkswagen says they cannot fix it and a future update is coming and will fix it. The update finally has come and the vehicle has all of the same problems and more. These cars are really dangerous to drive, please recall them off the road. You have a bunch of people driving malfunctioning vehicles.
CAr failed to move - twice. Taken to dealership twice. Dealership refuses to acknowledge ana address problem, even though online forums reveal that this is a common problem.
The passenger door opened on its while the car was coming to a stop. Then a few other occasions same issue. The vehicle had the recall completed and the issues still persist with the car. I did record on a separate incident when the wheel was engaged in reverse where the door opens couple times by itself.
On two separate occasions the VW ID4 screens have gone blank (main display and heads up display). While the car continued to steer, we lost all indication of speed, navigation, heating, and air conditioning. The pictures we have (unable to attach via this webpage), proves the display does not come back up during driving. Further, holding down the on-off power switch by the steering column or the on-off switch in the main display greater than 10 secs when the car was parked did not reboot or perform a soft reset of the display system.
While driving approximately 35 mph, there was a "thunk". I thought I was hit from behind, but there were no cars or debris around. The dash lit up with multiple warning lights and the car lost all drive power. If this had happened on freeway it could have had a major accident. Car was towed to dealer who said there was an internal battery failure they couldn't work on. Volkswagen then made me pay for a second tow to another dealer. I am currently without the car or further reports.
While driving my 2022 Volkswagen ID4 about 1 and 1/2 hours into our trip, I had multiple system errors come up on the "heads up" display. "Electrical system not working correctly." The car suddenly lost systems including speedometer, parking brake, steering, etc. I was able to pull off the highway with some difficulty since the steering and braking were effected. I was unable to turn off the car and the doors locked so that the key fob was not functioning. we used the key to pop open the cover on the door and unlock the door manually. we had the car towed to a dealership for diagnostic. However, the dealership was closed as it was Saturday night and it's also closed on Sunday. I'll find out tomorrow more information about what they can do. This same exact problem happened last year. I had the car towed to a dealership and...
After charging our EV vehicle, an error regarding an electrical system fault displayed on the dash. However, it was very brief and was no longer displayed after a few seconds, leaving only a triangle with an exclamation point illuminated on the dash. Unaware that propulsion power was limited, we proceeded to drive the vehicle, however while making a left turn across oncoming traffic, we realized that the ID4 was limited to around 10-20 percent of normal propulsion, even with the gas pedal to the floor. This nearly caused an accident due to nearly not being able to clear traffic.
I was driving in stop-and-go traffic on 5/3/23 and when I released my foot from the brake to gentle accelerate when traffic ahead of me moved, many error messages flashed on the dashboard and the vehicle did not move. The various errors included "travel assist not available", "forward collision warning not available", "vehicle should NOT be towed", "all wheel drive function is currently limited" and "electrical system warning, please service vehicle". When I pressed the accelerator, the car moved extremely slowly - less than 1mph. I put on my emergency flashers and attempted to move into the right lane and pull over to a safe location (extremely slowly with traffic honking and going around me). I tried turning the car off and turning it back on. Many error messages again, but the car did go a few more feet for me to turn onto a side street and park. At...
My instrument cluster and infotainment system went black while driving. This means that I had no access to my speedometer, which I believe is a safety issue. Additionally, I had no access to my range estimate or any other vehicle information. No backup camera, no lane assist, etc.
All dash screens and middle infotainment screen went black. Drive/reverse/neutral indicator remained lit. All instrumentation was gone, no speed, Backup camera or odometer. The problem has not recurred or been reproduced. No warnings were given.
On March 8, 2023 our VW ID.4 (2022) became unsafe and un-drivable after we experienced several alarming malfunctions that threaten driver and passenger safety including: (1) driver door suddenly opening while driving, (2) driver trapped in vehicle as a result of the driver door failing to open (earlier that same day), (3) vehicle suddenly and immediately beginning to move on its own without pressing the accelerator as soon as it was placed in reverse. The dealership's service manager confirmed all of the above findings and further informed us that unintended forward acceleration was also observed by them during their testing of the vehicle. Any one of these issues would be cause for great concern but taken together they have shaken my confidence in the ID.4 as a safe, road-worthy vehicle within which I can transport my wife and child. No vehicle should ever exhibit these types of alarming safety defects...
2/14/23, Longmont Colorado snow storm roads snowcovered. Vehicle in Traction mode, all wheel drive. Exiting an inclined parking lot cars rear end started sliding to left, gently accelerated to correct. Yellow caution lights illuminated for all systems. No advanced driver assistance systems were working. Car was extremely difficult to drive, braking was severely restricted as was acceleration and cornering . I believe the computer system was overloaded, “confused” and shut down. I honestly don’t believe that I could have controlled the vehicle had I been driving any Colorado mountain pass. Managed to drive approximately 3 miles to home, but it was a scary experience. Facebook groups for ID-4, reported that when the computer crashes, to stop car, exit, lock and step away at least 50 feet for 5 minutes to reset. Not practical in a mountain blizzard! It was quite a surprise, as we have taken to snow covered Fair...
We've taken the ID.4 in to the dealership three times for repairs. They have not been able to resolve it and have more or less said that it is a manufacturer defect. * The car does not connect to the internet. * The driver's console continues to go blank, very often loses all safety features, and generally acts oddly. We've realized that this mostly happens when the car travels over slight bumps or vibrations, which is basically every time we drive it. Warning signs on the driver's console will show loss of main safety features like Rear Traffic Alerts, Lane Assist, and Cruise Control. * The main driver console often goes blank. It recently blanked out for twenty to thirty minutes while driving on the freeway, making it impossible to know how fast I was going. This also happened in a school zone where children were present. * The back...
UNKNOWN - My ID4 stalled with ALL errors appearing today (2nd time in 2 days). I was rolling to a stop at a light, around 10mph. The car errored out suddenly and I was stuck. The car could not move for 1-2 minutes. I had to attempt to turn on/off multiple times, put it into park then drive and park and drive until it would start moving again. I was lucky this happen at a stop light otherwise I would have been rear ended on the freeway, which cause extreme harm. The dealer checked the 12v and said it was fine. They do not have an appointment for another two months.
Ever since I picked this car up I've noticed that it's been having constant electrical gremlins. Some days things will work some days things will not work. But the issue that I'm writing about is that earlier this week on a Monday I went to go to a local charger. When I was done charging about 10 minutes later I was pulling out of a parking lot and coasting to a stop to get on the main road. However even though I was pressing the brake pedal the car suddenly lurched forward and started accelerating. I arrested the acceleration with the brake pedal but found that it was firm and had to press even harder to get the car to come to a stop.
The sensors for side assist and rear traffic alert are not functioning. The error message came on while driving, then the sensor stopped working immediately. This first occurred about 10 days after taking possession of the vehicle (late July). I scheduled service with the dealer to "fix" the problem, which they claimed was due to excess dirt around the sensors. Within a week of that service (late Aug/early Sept) the error message reappeared and the sensors stopped working again while driving. The sensors do not detect or warn about vehicles or objects in the blind spots. This is a brand new vehicle. One of the techs said they've heard of other customers complaining about different sensors. After searching online for similar issues, I found multiple, such as here: https://www.vwidtalk.com/threads/front-assist-stopped-working.7725/#post-135632 Like this post, I have not been able to get service again yet locally (they are "backed up") and VW of...
The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact stated while attempting to drive onto the highway the message "Electronic Sound. Please Drive With Greater Care" suddenly displayed and the vehicle would not accelerate when depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact stated upon restarting the vehicle several times, the vehicle operated as intended. While inspecting the vehicle later, the contact heard an abnormal humming sound coming from the front motor area. The contact restored the vehicle's electronic system back to the factory settings and the vehicle operated as intended. The vehicle was taken to an unknown local dealer where it was diagnosed that the front motor electrical power inverter was faulty and needed to be replaced but the part was not available. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 1,900.
