2022 TOYOTA TUNDRA Engine Problems

Hesitation/Lag Acceleration and Stop.

Vehicle experienced sudden engine shutdown at highway speed. While traveling at highway speed, the internal combustion engine shut off without warning. The hybrid system temporarily allowed propulsion, which enabled me to move the vehicle out of traffic and off the highway shoulder. After stopping, the vehicle would not restart for approximately 20 minutes. During this time, the vehicle was disabled and would not turn on. After the waiting period, the vehicle restarted and operated normally. No warning lights or messages were present prior to the shutdown. This event created a dangerous situation at highway speed and posed a significant safety risk to myself and my passengers. The vehicle is a 2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid (i-FORCE MAX). Since the incident, the vehicle has been driven approximately 10,000 miles without recurrence, but the cause of the shutdown was never identified. There is a lag when you accelerate. Many people notice a throttle lag and I’ve asked the dealer to fix it, but they said it is not a recall.

The motor blew up. This is the second motor. Toyota hasn't approved a new motor even though their recall says i need one.

The motors oil pressure is low. If something goes while I'm driving it can be dangerous to others and myself. It has not been confirmed with mine, but it has been a known issue with this year of the tundra's and has a recall for some of them but not all. Hasn't been inspected by others and no lights have came on yet but running really low pressure.

Many times while pushing the gas pedal the truck lags and wont move and I have almost been hit by another vehichle trying to enter traffic. This happens when the engine is warm and has been running for some time. A couple of times the truck has done this and I have had to hit the gas pedal to the point of mushing it all the way to floor and the truck finally responds and then takes off out of control and fish tails. Very Scary!! Most of the time its just a lag while coming to a stop at a stop sign and then push the gas pedal and there is a throttle lag before the truck moves and then is abrupt.

Engine hesitation from a stop. Engine takes 1-2 seconds to respond to throttle pedal input. Creates timing safety hazard when attempting to cross oncoming lane to enter roadway. Puts vehicle at risk of not clearing the oncoming lane in time to avoid collision. Intermittent and haven’t been able to reproduce with dealer.

Have severe throttle lag and/or hesitation when giving gas from a stop. It causes a unsafe condition when you give it gas to go and it hesitates so bad I have almost gotten into accidents. This has been happening since new. Currently 30k miles on the truck.

The accelerator pedal is unresponsive at times when attempting to accelerate from a complete stop, or a rolling stop, while traveling below 5 mph. This presents itself as a "dead pedal" type situation where no matter the accelerator angle given by the driver, zero power output at the engine is given. This can be logged via electronic data logger, and clearly the throttle angle does not change when this scenario presents itself. This can present a serious safety concern as the truck becomes a sitting duck, creeping out into a intersection with no more than idle power.

This has been an ongoing issue since the vehicle was new. When accelerating from a stop, when I push the gas pedal, there is a hesitation. There is no throttle response that can last up to 2 or 3 seconds which is dangerous. There have been times that I have tried to pull into traffic from a parking lot and the truck will not accelerate then jerks when it finally responds. This happens daily.

In certain situations when stopping briefly and then accelerating the pedal is dead. For a short amount of time the accelerator does not work and then it launches the truck forward aggressively. There has been a few instances when I am turning left and the truck does not move and I am stuck in the middle of oncoming traffic before the truck suddenly lurches forward.

My 2022 had a new crate engine put in at 26,000 miles in approx June 2025 (told me it would be 2 days but in less than 24hrs the service advisor called and told me it was completed) and from the second I picked up my truck and started it at the dealership, I heard a loud, fast ticking noisy sound coming from under the hood so I popped my hood and it sounded like a diesel engine and as I started driving I felt a weird popping/vibrating noise when turning either right or left at slow speeds and it felt like there were no shocks or motor mounts or something was bent and the rear end was skipping and making a loud thud when slightly stepping on gas pedal and Toyota said it's all normal. Whe starting from stop sign, driveway, red light, etc. the acceleration hesitates as-if the vehicle is attempting to learn to build up for the acceleration. Several times exiting these places, vehicles have had time to near my truck in traffic and cause a motor vehicle crash.

2-3 second throttle lag after pressing pedal from rolling stops and sudden lurches from engine when it decides to go. From dead stops - 2-3 second throttle lag as well and acceleration lurches that are so strong that sometimes it will chirp the tires when it decides to finally go.

I'm having an issue my 2022 Toyota Tundra having incredible throttle lag issues involves a delay and sudden surge when accelerating from a stop, creating a safety concern, often described as a "dead pedal". It has caused me to get into numerous situations where i could've gotten hit by other vehicles. It is so dangerous! The dealership is unable to fix it and says to disconnect the battery regularly to try and "help" the issue.

I've had a recall procedure done to correct an acceleration hesitation, but the problem still persists. When accelerating from a stop into traffic there is a significant acceleration pause before the pickup actually accelerates. I've had several close calls to being hit by oncoming traffic because of the inability to merge into traffic as planned due to the acceleration pause. The pickup currently has just over 56,000 miles on it.

There is a well-known issue with these new model Toyota tundras where there are problems with acceleration. When at a stop and pulling out from the stop, the engine and acceleration hesitate, and there is a flag of between 2 to 5 seconds before the vehicle starts moving. The gas pedal is depressed and there is a hesitation or lag of several seconds before forward movement progresses. There was a Toyota safety bulletin update that was supposed to fix the problem and it did not. Many users are still reporting the same problem and it’s just as bad as it was before. This creates a massive safety issue when pulling into traffic or trying to increase speed to keep up with the flow of traffic when initially pulling out. My truck specifically is experiencing this anywhere from one to three times a week.

I get throttle lag/hesitation most often when starting to go from a complete stop. This has happened many times.

On a cold start, or if you drive with the vehicle in normal mode, from my understanding, vehicles are now fly by wire, the computer has a lag that if you attempt to pull out in front of someone, the truck will simply fail to go, then after a delay.It will take off like a rocket, to circumvent this issue, I have found.If you drive in sport mode, it tends to have less of a delay. But it's a serious safety concern.Along with the other issues with these vehicles, I have had a few close calls, where the throttle response was incredibly delayed.

When at a stop, pushing the gas pedal to go, the truck hesitates. Almost like the truck dies then all of the sudden takes off. I have had multiple instances were i was almostnT-boned. Dealer said that is normal for a vehicle with turbos. We don't experience this with my wife's Kia. No warning lights appear. Just to be clear the truck hesitates at almost every stop when trying to accelerate.

Taking off at a stop and merging in traffic or any complete stop there's a lag or dead spot in the gas pedal,a severe at times hesitation before it finally proceeds to move,a dead spot between hitting the gas and actually taking off.scary at times.,this truck had this lag before engine replace and only now has 5,000 miles on new engine and still does it.This happens every time you drive it.not a particular incident or when it's the truck is cold or warmed up.

Truck regularly experiences throttle lag leading to dangerous/hesitating entry into traffic/intersections. Either each occurrence, after 1 to 4 seconds the vehicle will lurch forward hard after the pause. It has also happened when accelerating to pass on the highway. This also happened with the original and replaced engine.

On Aug 1st I started noticing a slight shake in the vehicle on the way to work in the morning. I can best describe this shake or shutter like an imbalanced tire or a misfire. On the way home I noticed that the shutter was only present around 1,100-1,300RPMs while under gentle acceleration. About 6 miles from home I noticed the engine would bog down from time to time and shortly after I could hear a slight metallic sound. It was not until I got into town where I was set a slower road speed that I could clearly hear that the metallic sound was a rod knock. Car stalls from stop during acceleration. There are times when there is no response from throttle.

When trying to accelerate from a stop this truck lags and hesitates to the point of stalling almost when pulling into or crossing traffic. I have been in many near miss collisions due to the hesitation and lack of response. This has been going on since I’ve owned the truck in 22 and the dealership failed to address it or even acknowledge it.

The vehicle hesitates when starting from a stop. It feels like the engine dies. This was a previous “recall”. Vehicle was “fixed” but still happening. I’ve informed Toyota of issue. No resolution. I’ve almost been hit twice at an intersection because of this.

Very often when I go to press on the gas, there is a noticeable lag before my truck goes. When there is oncoming traffic it is to a point where I do not try to go in case it lags and could be dangerous. This seems to be a common problem when I talk to other owners of the same model truck.

When accelerating from a stop the truck stumbles and does not take off. This is dangerous as people may run into you. I have asked many times at dealership if there is a fix yet and the answer is no.

Throttle Lag. When stopped at a stop sign, I attempted to accelerate and when I pressed the pedal, the vehicle didn’t respond. I had to release the gas pedal, wait a second, then attempt to accelerate again. This time it responded.

Engine locked up on the highway at 70mph. It’s Known issue but as it’s a hybrid they said no recall. It makes no sense as I lost power and if I was passing a semi or on a hill I would have been in trouble and risked causing an accident. I was lucky to be on a downhill and near a ramp. The hybrids need to be recalled and this problem creates a real risk.

When completing a slow down, when going to accelerate there is a noticeable delay in the engine responding and before actual acceleration. This typically results in the need to press the pedal hard and suddenly it finally accelerates and at times spins the tires, almost uncontrollably. This has caused many near misses when trying to cross oncoming traffic, or entering traffic of a busy road or hwy. There have been no warning lights or indicators of any issues. This can be repeated on demand and even the dealership service tech has felt and acknowledged it. It is a common issue across the Gen 3 Tundras (2022+) models as found across many forums and owners.

First I had my engine replaced in May 2025 under the recall and service advisor informed me it would be about 3 days before they completed the engine swap and it had to sit to make sure there were no leaks anywhere and in less than 24 hrs the called me and told me my truck was all done. I went to pick my truck up they had it waiting in the service line with the engine running, I heard a strange ticking noise coming from under my hood that sounded like a lawnmower engine, the service tech tells me that is normal with the replacement engines which is absolutely false. Bought the truck from BILL LUKE MARANA was told there were no major safety issues with recalls and that the only recall was debris in engine that didn't have a fix yet.... drove the car from dealership to home, upon arriving home my wife smelled gas, i thought it was cleaning fluid smell or something. drove the truck to circle k smelled gas but though it was circle k . drove the truck once more to pick up an employee so i could drop him off to drive home the car i left at the dealer . During this drive the smell of gas became undeniable . Upon arrival home the truck was parked my employee ( who had been driving behind in a different car) jumped out and said the truck was spraying gas . My daughter exited the passenger side of the vehicle and was misted with gasoline....

Lag when pressing on gas pedal may cause an accident.

The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where an unknown diagnosis was completed. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. After Toyota replaced the engine on my 2022 Tundra under recall, the truck developed serious issues that were not present before. The engine and powertrain system now knock, shake, stutter, and in multiple instances, the vehicle has shut off completely—including while driving and while stopped at intersections. These failures pose a significant safety risk to myself and others. Sudden loss of power in traffic or while braking has created close calls, especially when other vehicles are nearby. I no longer feel safe driving it. I have taken the truck to the Toyota dealership six times. They claim they cannot replicate the problem, but the symptoms return every time shortly after I leave. On [XXX] I was traveling in my 2022 Trd Pro Tundra 5.5 hv. I was taking a left turn at a green light, when all of the sudden lights appeared on my dash saying “HYBRID SYSTEM MALFUNCTION, visit your dealer”. The car continued to function for approximately 1 minute, until the next light where it turned off. I tried to turn the vehicle back on, but it started to shake when it tried to start. At this point I was stuck at the light with traffic behind me, the engine had failed and the hybrid system had failed as well. I had to call 911 and request an officer to come assist, because I was blocking traffic. At random times, from a dead stop, there is a significant ‘dead pedal’ issue with my truck when I try to accelerate. This is is followed by a huge surge in power to catch up and it lurches forward. It’s very inconsistent and worries me about turning out into regular traffic at times

I have so many problems with my truck and the surging engine as well as squealing brakes, lane assist is disabled but comes on and jerks the truck out of my lane and it's impossible to steer almost causing me to crash numeroys times. Every time I try to get the engine replaced which I've been waiting over a year and I was in Phase 2 and every Toyota dealership tells me something different. I can't even sell this truck privately because it needs a new engine. I have 25,300 miles as of today and I've had it in the shop so many times and they say they can't find anything wrong with it. The headliner fell down onto my head and took it in for service and I got it back worse because they broke all the clips that hold the interior headliner in place and it's hanging down....

When getting on the gas from a complete stop the engine hesitates to get going. I use sport mode and it helps lessen the effects.

Occasionally, upon coming to a stop or from the stopped position the vehicle briefly hesitates when trying to accelerate cause the vehicle to aggressively jerk once the vehicle begins to accelerate, sometimes leaving you in the middle of an intersection or in a dangerous situation in traffic due to unresponsive acceleration inputs.

Hesitation in accelerating

There is a hesitation from the engine when vehicle is stopped. I have almost got into accident because of this. Dealer flashed the update but still no resolution. Dealer says it’s by design. When taking off from the atop sight or a traffic light, vehicle hesitates big time to move forward.
