The frame is so rusted in my truck my mechanic said it may snap at anytime and is not safe to drive. I know Toyota tundra’s from 2000-2003 have been recalled for same reason.
This report addresses the critical structural integrity concerns related to excessive corrosion, and frame material loss affecting the main ladder frame chassis. The degradation of the frame members poses a significant and immediate safety risk, including potential catastrophic structural failure, detachment of critical components, and failure of safety systems (e.g., braking and fuel lines) mounted to the frame. Location: Mid-frame section (beneath the cab) and rear sections (near the leaf spring mounts and rear axle).

We are the first owner of this 2005 Toyota Tundra Limited with only 91K miles. The frame is rusted so badly that we are afraid to drive down the road. This rusted problem could cause potential harm or death to us and others on the road.

Severe frame rust due to cheap frame material. Earlier year models were recalled but 05 and 06 were not, just a limited campaign. Frame looks like it has been coated before, but this is a known issue with these trucks. I have contacted Toyota and they basically said, sorry, we can't do anything.
Severe rust throughout the frame
Original owner. Well known frame rust safety issue as documented by thousands of 2005 Tundra owners. Toyota did an inspection for frame rust several years ago and opted for coating to deal with issue hastily given the long delay/backlog with replacing entire frame. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Now major safety/inspection issues with frame area and gas tank. Unable to allow my child to drive back to college. Not safe. Not worth risking kids lives. Would be interested to learn how many owner/operators need to report serious injury/fatalities before NHTSA enforces action against Toyota for corporate greed.
The driver's side front frame has rotted out disconnecting the mount for the anti-roll bar. This has happened despite several reports to the dealership going back many years that the frame was rusting rapidly which, upon examination, they said that it was OK. They did apply a coating which might have delayed the process a bit but ultimately resolved nothing. For trucks that had perforated frames during the first few years, they replaced the frame. I tried to take care of mine, but it has finally failed and they say the replacement program is over. They are unwilling to provide even the necessary frame section and mounting bracket for the sway bar (~$545) for the frame shop to install %(2120).This vehicle has less than 98,000 miles on it and is used for short trips performing farmette duties. The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that he was informed at the State Inspection facility that the entire sub-frame of the vehicle was severely corroded. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that they could not assist as the vehicle was not included in a recall related to the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 148,518.
This vehicle was purchased as a certified used vehicle from Johnston Toyota. It was recalled by Toyota for a rust problem. In October 2014 the vehicle was treated by the dealer (Johnston Toyota) with a rust inhibiting compound due to the rust problem. Approximately 1-2 years ago this vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic who stated that the vehicle was badly rusted, and he believed that Toyota had a program to address this issue. I spoke to the Toyota service department and I was told that this vehicle is not covered. Approximately 2 weeks ago an independent mechanic advised the rust problem is extensive and the vehicle will be unsafe to operate. Although Toyota advises that this is a widespread problem for this type vehicle, they refuse to address it. Furthermore, when I asked them why the rust inhibiting compound they used to correct the problem did not solve...
Frame is rusted. Whole on front passenger side frame.
FRAME IS VERY RUSTY. STRAP HOLDING FUEL TANK IS DANGEROUS , REAR SUSPENTION ,AND SHOCKS BROKEN
I seen that Toyota were recalled for the frame issues on 2004 and up, mine is 2005 tundra with frame issues, like it’s sad, such a nice truck, but frame is horrible. Why is mine not being shown as recalled, but yet I have frame problems? I got my truck from a 1 owner who had it since new, it just hit 100,000 miles on it, it was serviced by Toyota dealership, I’m not sure why they didn’t do nothing with it over the years to help or fix the rust issue on the frame. It’s not just a little rusty, it’s really rusty, and it was garage kept too. Did they forget to include my vin number when they started the recalls? Doesn’t make sense why they would fix some and not all, all around the same years. Thanks Jim
The frame has several holes in it. Toyota said they did the corrosion prevension on it and said the repair is out of warranty. The sway bar has broken free of the frame and there are several hole and flaking spots on the frame.
DISCOVERED SEVERE RUST THROUGH ON THE UNDERSIDE FRAME.
2005 TUNDRA FRAME IS RUSTED IN MANY PLACES. VERY BAD WHERE FRAME SECTIONS MEET AND NOW THE FRAME IS RUSTING THROUGH THE MAIN HORIZONAL FRAME ITSELF AS THE ATTACHED PICTURE INDICATES. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE FOR YEARS BUT IS BAD ENOUGH NOW THAT IT IS NOT SAFE AND WILL NOT PASS INSPECTION. I KNOW THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS FRAME AND I WAS TOLD IT WAS OK WHEN I BROUGHT IT IN FOR THE RECALL. I T HAS BEEN RUSTING EVER SENSE. LIMITED SERVICE CAMPAIGN DSD 2004-11006 TUNDRA FRAME INSPECTION. I BOUGHT AN 05 TUNDRA LAST YEAR. CALLED TOYOTA AND THEY SAID THIS RECALL IS OVER. MY FRAME NEEDS REPAIRING. THEY ARE NOT HELPING. DO I HAVE ANY RECOURSE?
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD MY SPARE TIRE MOUNT FAILED DO TO RUST CORROSION CAUSING MY SPARE TIRE TO FALL OFF OF MY VEHICLE. 2005 TUNDRA WITH MAJOR FRAME RUST. TOOK IT IN DURING THE ORIGINAL RECALL WHERE THEY SPRAYED THE FRAME WITH A "RUST PREVENTATIVE COATING" WHICH FELL OFF IN A YEAR. THE FRAME IS NOW DANGEROUSLY RUSTY AND TOYOTA REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING MORE. TOYOTA NEEDS TO BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING ALL OF THE AFFECTED FRAMES, NOT JUST THE ONES THAT DIDN'T PASS THEIR "INSPECTION" BACK WHEN THE ORIGINAL RECALL HAPPENED. THE RUST THROUGH PROBLEM IS A VERY WELL KNOWN ISSUE AND THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF TUNDRAS AND TACOMAS ON THE ROAD THAT ARE DANGEROUSLY RUSTY BECAUSE OF TOYOTA'S FAITHLESS RESPONSE TO THE PROBLEM. I RECENTLY PURCHASED THIS 2005 TUNDRA AND LATER FOUND OUT THAT THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE WAS MASSIVELY RUSTED AND WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. THIS VEHICLE WAS PART OF THE TOYOTA FRAME RECALL BUT WAS NEVER REPLACED AND AFTER CONTACTING TOYOTA THEY ARE TELLING ME THAT THEY WILL NOT REPLACE THE FRAME. TOYOTA SAID THE FRAME WAS 'TREATED' IN 2015 AND THAT SHOULD'VE TAKEN CARE OF ANY ISSUES. GIVEN THE PHOTOS THIS RUST HAS BEEN BUILDING FOR YEARS. I CONTACTED LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY SAID THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO AS RECALL HAS EXPIRED AND TOYOTA CORPORATE WILL NOT DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. THIS TUNDRA WAS SUPPOSED TO BE SPRAYED IN 2014 AS PART OF THE "FIX" BUT THE FRAME IS RUSTING AND ROTTING APART. MORE SIGNS OF ROTS ARE VISIBLE ON THE FRAME.

I WENT TO HAVE MY 2005 TOYOTA TUNDRA INSPECTED AND IT FAILED DUE TO FRAME CORROSION CAUSING FRACTURE AND SPLINTERING OF THE FRAME SUPPORTS. THE FRAME OF MY 2005 TOYOTA TUNDRA HAS RUSTED THROUGH AT 4 POINTS, FRACTURING AND SPLINTERING AT 3 OF THE POINTS OF FAILURE. THE VEHICLE CAN NOT PASS THE VIRGINIA INSPECTION AND IS NOW UNDRIVEABLE. IT IS NOT SAVE TO HAUL OR TOW ANYTHING, THE TWO MAIN FUNCTIONS OF MY TRUCK.

FRAME HAS PREMATURELY RUSTED RESULTING IN THE SWAY BAR MOUNTING BRACKET TO BREAK OFF. FRAME IS CLOSE TO COMPLETE FAILURE WHICH WOULD RESULT IN FUEL AND BRAKE LINES SEVERING WITH CATASTROPHIC RESULT.

WHILE DRIVING TRUCK ON PUBLIC ROAD, I HEARD A LOUD POP SOUND. PULLED OFF THE ROAD AND LOOKED UNDER THE TRUCK AND LOOKED LIKE THE SPARE TIRE WAS LOOSE. REMOVED THE SPARE TIRE AND PLACED IN THE BED OF THE TRUCK AND FURTHER INSPECTED THE REAR CROSS MEMBER. IT APPEARED TO BE CRACKED. CALLED TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TO HAVE TRUCK FRAME INSPECTED SPECIFICALLY THE REAR CROSS MEMBER. I HAVE ATTACHED THE WORK ORDER FROM HICKORY TOYOTA WHICH STATES DO NOT RECOMMEND DRIVING VEHICLE. HAVE ALSO ATTACHED A COUPLE OF PICTURES WHERE I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE REAR SHACKLE BRACKET ON THE REAR DRIVERS SIDE AND ALSO THE RACK PORTION OF THE RACK& PINION STEERING. I HAVE ATTACHED THE INVOICE FOR THE REAR BRACKET AND CAN SUPPLY AN INVOICE FOR THE RACK IF NEEDED.
TOYOTA TUNDRA FRAME RECALL - FRAME COATING APPLIED PER RECALL IN 2014. VEHICLE INSPECTED TWICE BY DEALER IN 2018 & 2019 AND VEHICLE DETERMINED TO BE OK. RECENTLY EXPERIENCED LOSS OF BRAKES AND CRASH INTO GARAGE. VEHICLE INSPECTED BY INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND FOUND 2 PERFORATED AND RUSTED BRAKE LINES. SCRAPING AWAY THE UNDERCOATING UNCOVERED OTHER CORROSION IN VARIOUS DEGREES. DETERMINED THAT SPRAY UNDERCOATING CAME WAY TO LATE AS TRUCK ALREADY HAD 9 YEARS OF CORROSION. UNDERCOATING ONLY HID THE PROBLEM. SUBMITTED A CLAIM WITH TOYOTA WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE.
DURING ANNUAL INSPECTION ON JULY 19, 2019, RUST HOLES FOUND IN THE FRAME. ONE HOLE WAS ALMOST 2 INCHES IN DIAMETER. ADDITIONAL PERFORATIONS FOUND NEAR THE LEAF SPRING AREA. VEHICLE WAS SUBJECT TO LSC IN 2014 AND TREATED WITH CRC COMPOUND. THIS JUST APPEARS TO HAVE DELAYED THE ONSET OF THE FRAME CANCER. TOYOTA WAS NOTIFIED. NO SUPPORT FROM THEM - THEY ARE SAYING IT IS MY PROBLEM.
SEPT 2014 MY TRUCKS FRAME WAS RECALLED FOR THE RUST PROBLEM. THE FRAME WAS SCALED AND SPRAYED. MILEAGE 134,500. 6/2018 WITH MILEAGE 164,301 DEALER ADVISES ME FRAME IS GETTING RUSTY! I SAID YOU SCALED AND COATED IT IN 2014 ISN'T IT WARRANTED? THERE ANSWER WAS THAT ENDED LAST MONTH. NOW IT'S A YEAR LATER JUNE 2019 IT ONLY HAS 171,000 AND ONLY 36,500 MILES SINCE THE FRAME WAS COATED. THE TOYOTA DEALER FAILED THE NH STATE INSPECTION. I AM VERY UPSET AS I HAVE SPENT OVER $4500 IN THE PAST 18 MONTHS ON OTHER REPAIRS AND ON GONE 8K MILES. I NEVER WOULD HAVE DONE THOSE REPAIRS IF I WAS ADVISE HOW BAD IR HOW FAST THE RUST WAS GOING TO MAKE MY TRUCK UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I HAVE ONLY OWNED THIS TRUCK FOR ABOUT 6 MONTHS NOW. TOOK MY TRUCK TO MY MECHANIC TO GET SOME BRAKE WORK DONE. WHEN HE PULLED THE TIRE OFF OF THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE HE NOTICED A CRACK IN THE FRAME. SOME FURTHER INVESTIGATION REVEALED SOME VERY BAD ROT ON THE FRAME AND A HOLE ABOUT THE SIZE OF TWO FISTS THAT SOMEBODY HAD TRIED TO PATCH WITH JUST BONDO AND PAINTED BACK OVER TO HIDE IT. IT WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN VISIBLE WITHOUT PULLING THE TIRE OFF. UNSURE OF WHEN THIS ALL OCCURRED BUT APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN ROTTED OUT FOR A WHILE. I HAVE NO PICTURES TO UPLOAD AS IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND STILL AT THE GARAGE. MY 2005 TOYOTA TUNDRA HAS 217K MILES AND IS, MECHANICALLY, IN TERRIFIC SHAPE, EXCEPT THE FRAME HAS RUSTED OUT ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. STRUCTURALLY, IT'S STILL DRIVABLE SAFELY, BUT IT WILL NO LONGER PASS STATE INSPECTION (MAINE, USA). THOUSANDS OF OTHER TOYOTA TUNDRAS OF THE SAME STYLE AND MANUFACTURING PROCESS AND SIMILAR MODEL YEAR HAVE HAD FRAME RECALLS DONE FOR THE EXACT SAME REASON. I DO NOT FEEL IT IS FAIR TO SKIP THIS YEAR. THIS IS MY FAMILY'S ONLY SOURCE OF TRANSPORTATION RIGHT NOW, AND IT IS VITAL TO KEEP IT ON THE ROAD. PLEASE ALLOW A FRAME RECALL FOR THIS MODEL YEAR!
BOUGHT THE TUNDRA IN LATE 2014 FROM TOYOTA OF KEENE IN NH. WAS TOLD FRAME WAS CHECK AND THE RUST PREVENTION SPRAY WAS APPLIED, VEHICLE FRAMED LOOKED CLEAN AND HAD NO VISIBLE RUST , THEY COULDN'T PROVIDE ME WITH ANY RECORD OF THIS . IN FEBRUARY OF 2016. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO GRAPPONE AND HAD NOTICED SOME RUST ON THE FRAME AROUND THE GAS TANK AND UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE. GRAPONNE TOLD ME THAT THE FRAME SERVICE WAS COMPLETED AND THEY COULDN'T ( OR WOULDN'T) BE ABLE TO HELP AND NOTED THE SPRAY WAS INTACT. AFTER THAT THE POWER STEERING ROTTED AWAY WHICH GRAPPONE TOYOTA REPLACED AND AT THAT TIME I BROUGHT THE RUST TO THERE ATTENTION AGAIN . THEY SAID IT LOOKED NORMAL AND NOT TO WORRY. AFTER THAT I KEPT MY EYE ON IT. BROUGHT IT TO GET MY ANNUAL INSPECTION. THE TECH BROUGHT ME OUT SHOWED...
WAS PULLING LIGHT DUTY COVERED UHAUL TRAILER THAT WAS MAYBE 1/10 FULL OF HOUSEHOLD ITEMS. FRAME PULLED APART. WAS IN MY DRIVEWAY WITH SON IN LAW HELPING GUIDE BACKING UP TO GARAGE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRAME UNDERNEATH THE DRIVER'S SIDE BUCKLED WHEN IT WAS PLACED ON THE LIFT AT STOLTZ TOYOTA OF DUBOIS (860 BEAVER DR, DUBOIS, PA 15801, (814) 371-3333. THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS A VOLUNTARY RECALL ON THE FRAME AND ADVISED THE CONTACT TO CALL THE MANUFACTURER. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VOLUNTARY RECALL EXPIRED IN JULY OF 2015 AND THEY COULD NOT ASSIST. THE CONTACT DID NOT RECEIVE A RECALL NOTICE. THE CONTACT PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN 2009 FROM THE ORIGINAL OWNER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 150,000.
FRAME IS RUSTING AND BREAKING
MY 2005 TUNDRA IS ROTTING OUT IN THE FRAME ABOVE THE REAR LEAF SPRING FRONT CONNECTION TO THE FRAME. DEALER HAS LOOKED AT IT TWICE IN THE LAST SIX YEARS SAID NO PERFORATIONS. NOW IN 2018 THE FRAME IS ROTTING AND BUCKLED. TOYOTA CORPORATE SAYS THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO BECAUSE IT OUTSIDE OF THE WINDOW OF SERVICE. SO NOW I AM STUCK WITH A TRUCK WITH JUST OVER 100K MILES, LOOKED AT BY A TOYOTA DEALER IN THE PAST AND WAS DEEMED NOT IN NEED OF A FRAME REPLACEMENT. NOW IT IS IN NEED OF A FRAME REPLACEMENT BUT TOYOTA WON'T HONOR ANY PAST RECALLS OR INSPECTIONS DONE BY A TOYOTA DEALER AND HAS LEFT IT TO ME TO DEAL WITH THE ROT. VERY DISAPPOINTED THERE IS NO HELP FOR CUSTOMERS IN THIS SITUATION FROM THE MANUFACTURER.
