2004 TOYOTA 4RUNNER Unknown Or Other Problems

The body frame on this vehicle is almost completely rushed out. I don’t know what to do. If I should have the frame replaced I know there’s been a couple recalls on similar Toyota models.

Rusting frame, no specific incident date. Used today’s date.

Excessive frame and suspension corrosion that could lead to serious accidents if not repaired at a very high cost for myself

Underbody of vehicle is rusting away from vehicle body, I was made aware of situation at a service appointment in April of 2022, no vehicle collision or wreck has happened because of it yet,

Frame is severely rusted and has holes started at 40k miles

2004 4Runner rear hatch glass imploded with rear defroster on while driving and glass shattered all inside the vehicle in the back behind rear passenger seat. The loud sound when it imploded sounded like we had got shot at and scared all four of us in the vehicle thinking we were shot at. We pulled the vehicle over at the nearest pull over while driving on a coastal two lane road. We searched for any possible bullets. Did not find any and had to clean up as much possible of shattered glass that had covered all of our clothing and belongings. Had no materials to cover the rear broken window and had to continue our drive to meet family members to attend an early event at 9:00 am.

I own a 2004 Toyota 4runner Sport Edition that suffers from frame rust issues. Mine isn't as bad as I've seen in person while working at a Toyota dealership as a tech or on the forums but from my experience in assisting in replacing frames at the dealership I know that my frame won't last very long. When I bought it from the original owner it had around 86,XXX miles on it and the typical spot in the from was rusted out. I choose to purchase it because it was the best example I could find, others having worse rust. I quickly discovered a weak spot which became a hole when trying to jack it up to do work along with chunks of rust that came off the rear end of the frame and all over. Entire frame of the vehicle is rotten with rust and holes. This vehicle has been inspected by McDaniel Toyota, Marion, OH 43302 and the damage was confirmed. I have been and must continue to drive this vehicle even though the dealership did not recommend it. No evidence of the extent of the rust and damage was not noticed until October 2023 when a strap on the gas tank came loose. Upon further inspection, he noticed the holes and rust all over the frame. Reported to Toyota because other 2004 Models were recalled for this issue. They were of no assistance.

Frame of this vehicle completely rusted through. Holes on passenger side right where the front door ends. Hole is approx 12" long. Frame also has a hole in the left front core support. Advised that the vehicle is no longer safe to drive by my Toyota Dealer and personal mechanic. . There were no indications of this until a few weeks ago when the gas tank strap had come off and the gas tank was leaning. When inspected, it was found the frame was in disrepair.

Purchased 4 runner from a Toyota dealer in 2018 with 130k miles. During routine maintenance in 2021 with 160k. The frame was found to have several holes and wide spread corrosion. It is absurd that Toyotas was let off the hook for frame replacements. I bought this truck from the dealer and it had structural frame issues that were not disclosed at the time of sale. Frames don’t just fall apart apart in 4 years from normal driving. Clearly Toyota is ignoring the manufacturing deficits in there frames and still re-selling these as road worthy cars. It’s absurd that Toyota was not required to replace these and not recall has been issued. People should not be able to buy/sell one off these vehicles they are not safe due to the frames rusting from the inside-out. They need to be recalled and removed from service.

-The frame is rotted out - If the frame were to break, which my mechanic i saying is very possible, a massive incident could occur - It has been confirmed by an independent service center - It has not been inspected by the manufacturer but is an astonishingly common issue Toyota is very aware of that they continue to ignore. - There were not indicators notifying me of the issue. I wanted to replace my suspension and the mechanic advised not doing so because of the rot.

The truck frame is rusting and making the vehicle unsafe prematurely. My vehicle only has 78 thousand miles and likely needs the frame replaced like many other toyota vehicle because of the lack of corrosion protection.

The chassis is completely rusted/rotten, 1" Holes throughout the chassis and was told that it won't pass inspection.

I bought my 2004 Toyota 4runner Sport edition as a new car, and have been the sole owner of the vehicle. I have taken good care of it the entire time. I recently had my 4runner in for repairs and spent a considerable amount of money, over $6,000 in anticipation of driving it for many more years. Following the repairs I was told by the mechanic that the frame was EXTREMELY rusted and that the entire frame would need to be replaced. The right rear control arm mount completely rusted away from the frame. Causing it to start fish-tailing out of control. Also there are other mounts that have rusted through. Like for instance, the gas tank strap mounted to the frame. There are also more areas of the frame that are rusting through. I'm just glad that I was the only one in the vehicle and going slow enough to not cause an accident. I then took it to an auto repair shop and they informed me that the frame on my vehicle has many problem areas of being rusted through. 2004 Toyota 4 runner frame is corroded so bad and dealer mechanic thinks it is a default of manufacturer and suggested I file a complaint with you. He said many Toyota 4 runners having same issue and it is a safety hazzard.

My 4 runner only has 147,000 miles and is a great running vehicle but my frame is rotted badly. I have large holes throughout, the front crossmember under radiator with tow hooks has completely rusted off, and now I found where my rear lower drag link bolts to frame is about to come off. I have had to repair rusty brake lines multiple times. My rear axle carrier just sheds large flakes of rust. I love this truck but now it is almost too dangerous to drive and with all the inflation lately I cannot afford another vehicle.

The frame of the vehicle has rusted so badly the Toyota Dealer I have taken to for diagnosis and repairs refuses to put the vehicle on their lift to inspect or work on the underside of the car for fear of the safety of their workers. This is not a new problem for Toyota because they have lost a civil suit for premature rusting of the frames on other truck models. I took my 4Runner to a frame repair shop and got an estimate. I don't have the funds to do the repair. If the repairs were not made I could continue to drive it until the frame breaks I was told. Vehicle has a rust frame which causes a dangerous

Frame rust discovered by state inspection mechanic, vehicle fails for frame members rusted through. May not be repairable.

My steering became very loose with a lot of movement in the steering wheel. The universal joint in the steering column shaft was bad. Upon further investigation, both lower control arms on the front wheels were rusted through, (from the inside out), with one of them bent because of the lack of metal support that rusted away, which caused my wheels to be misaligned and hard to control. Upon additional inspection, the frame has rusted out in multiple places which could allow it to break in half. (pictures of one portion of the frame are attached.) I have had the steering column and lower control arms replaced but multiple body and frame shops state the frame is rusted too much to repair. I know Toyota recalled several models for frame rust issues but have not included the 4Runner, which I cannot understand. This rust has been noticed for several years...

I took my car in for repair. Check engine light and VSC track lights on with horrible sound beneath the car. The auto repair shop called me and said the frame and underbody of the car is so rusted it will break apart if I drive over a pothole. So rusted that there is nothing to be able to attach to under the car. I am original owner and had rust proofing applied to the car there when I bought it. They charged me nothing because there is nothing they can do, they can’t even weld it it’s nothing but rust.

Frame started excessive rusting before 2011 when the vehicle had very low miles on it. I reported it to Toyota National headquarters in 2016. They knew about it but since they didn't have to replace the frames they didn't care. They offered me $1000 towards a new car. I could not afford a new car. I have been battling the rust ever since. My 2004 Toyota 4Runner has holes multiple inches in diameter rusted completely through the frame in multiple locations including where frame rails meet and are welded. This 4Runner is very clean and well kept in a climate controlled garage. The 4Runner was somehow not captured in the class-action law suit against Toyota that included the Tacoma, Tundra and Sequoia. Toyota has long known the frames are prone to excessive, premature rust corrosion because the frames were not properly prepared and treated against rust corrosion when they were manufactured and yet it has failed to offer significant help to owners. The excessive rust damage on my Toyota 4Runner compromises the vehicles safety, stability and crash worthiness because important suspension components, engine mounts, transmission mounts and body mounts anchor to the vehicles frames. I have spoke with a local Toyota dealer who stated they would inspect the vehicle with a diagnostic fee...

The frame on my 4Runner is severely rusted out; it is available to be inspected if requested. When I'm driving, the vehicle is potentially unstable due to frame rot which could cause potentially life threating injuries to myself, my passengers, and others on the road. The problem has been confirmed by JR Autohaus in Woburn MA. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer/police/or insurance companies. There was no prior indication of an issue; it appeared when the vehicle was put on a lift to have a new exhaust put on: the vehicle was creaking and was dangerous to be on the lift for the technician. He inspected the frame and took pictures of the rust damage. The issue was discovered on 3/23/21

Last year the frame showed rust and holes and was rejected by the inspector. We were able to get the worst hole patched and it passed inspection. I am afraid the car might be unsafe.

I HAVE ANOTHER 4 RUNNER WITH A HEAVILY RUSTED FRAME. I AM VERY CONCERNED THAT A UNSEEN FAILURE CAN OCCUR WHILE TOWING A 4300 POUND CAMER OR WHILE DRIVING ON ROUGH ROADS. I'M NOT ONLY CONCERNED FOR MY WIFE AND I BUT ALSO FOR OUR GRANDKIDS THAT VISIT US MONTHLY. HERE IS THE ACTUAL FAILURE. MY WIFE CAME IN LAST THURSDAY AND ASKED ME WHAT IS THAT CAR PART THAT FELL OFF? I WENT OUT TO CHECK AND FOUND THE RIGHT BODY MOUNT LAYING THERE. THE BOLT THAT HOLDS IT HAD ROTTED IN TWO BETWEEN THE UPPER AND LOWER RUBBER PIECES. THE BOLT AND NUT ON THE BOTTOM LOOKS GOOD SO THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF A IMMINENT FAILURE. I'M CONCERNED THAT OTHER MORE SERIOUS FAILURES CAN OCCUR.

MY VEHICLE HAS SEVERE FRAME ROT, ALL OF WHICH COMING FROM THE FACTORY WELDS TO THE SURFACE POINTS ALONG WITH IT'S ROTTING FROM THE INSIDE OUT ESPECIALLY AROUND THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM AREAS OF THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDES OF THE VEHICLE. THIS ALSO REACHING THE BACK OF THE VEHICLES FRAME TOO.

MY 2004 4RUNNER LIMITED V6 HAS SIGNIFICANT RUST BUILD UP ON THE FRAME, CONTROL ARMS, DRIVESHAFT, ETC. I AM THE SECOND OWNER WITH JUST OVER 21K MILES DRIVEN IN THE PAST THREE YEAR AND RIGHT AT 160K TOTAL. I'VE MADE SURE TO GET REGULAR WASHES TO PROTECT THE UNDERCARRIAGE AFTER INCLEMENT WEATHER SINCE I'VE OWNED THE VEHICLE. AFTER RETURNING FROM A 10-MONTH DEPLOYMENT, TWO SHOPS HAVE TOLD ME THE CONDITION IS DANGEROUS AND REQUIRES SIGNIFICANT REPLACEMENT PARTS AND ANTI-CORROSION TREATMENT TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM. I DON'T HAVE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO SPEND ON A TRUCK THAT SHOULD LAST ME AT 250K MILES. I WILL NOT LET MY WIFE AND GIRLS RIDE IN THIS VEHICLE, BUT WE NEED TWO CARS. THIS 2004 4RUNNER WAS PURCHASED FROM A LOCAL DEALER IN SOUTH FLORIDA. THE CARFAX REPORT STATES THAT IT WAS PREVIOUSLY TITLED IN TEXAS AND THEN LATER IN NEW YORK. IT DID PASS THE NEW YORK STATE SAFETY INSPECTION IN 2020. HOWEVER, AFTER OWNING THE VEHICLE FOR A SHORT PERIOD I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC FOR A OIL CHANGE. I WAS ADVISED THAT THE RUST/CORROSION ON THE FRAME AND UNDERBODY COMPONENTS WAS QUITE SEVERE. MY CONCERN IS THAT IT MAY WORSEN AND AFFECT THE OVERALL SAFETY OF THE TRUCK AS WELL AS THE RESALE VALUE. I'M AWARE THAT TOYOTA HAD A SIMILAR ISSUE WITH TACOMA'S, TUNDRA'S, AND SEQUOIA VEHICLES. WHY WASN'T THE 4RUNNER INCLUDED IN THESE RECALLS GIVEN THE LARGE AMOUNT OF COMPLAINTS REGARDING 2003-2009 MODELS?

FRAME HAS SEVER RUST-THROUGH AND CORROSION ON THE PASSENGER SIDE IN FRONT OF THE REAR TRAILING LINK MOUNT AND BEHIND THE FRONT CONTROL ARM MOUNT. VEHICLE IS DRIVEN IN AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE ROAD SALT IS USED IN THE WINTER, BUT THIS IS EXCESSIVE COMPARED TO OTHER OLDER VEHICLES. VEHICLE IS WASHED REGULARLY IN THE WINTER.

MY 2004 TOYOTA 4RUNNER HAS DANGEROUS FRAME RUST PERFORATION. TOYOTA SOMEHOW WAS ALLOWED TO EXCLUDE 4RUNNERS, WHEN THEY WERE MADE TO REPLACE FRAMES ON SEQUOIA, TUNDRA, TACOMA, AND TACOMA TRUCKS OF SIMILAR VINTAGE. THERE IS NO REASON THAT IS FAIR NOR EQUITABLE TO 4RUNNER OWNERS BE DENIED FRAME REPLACEMENTS WHEN ALL OTHER TOYOTA TRUCKS WERE GRANTED IN THE SETTLEMENT

2004 TOYOTA 4RUNNER, THE FRAME IS RUSTED REALLY BAD. CAN'T LIFT IT WITH A HOIST AND PARTS THAT CONNECT TO IT FOR SUSPENSION ARE RUSTED AS WELL. NOT GOOD IF YOU HIT A BUMP AND IT BREAKS, COULD CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT.

FRAME RUST TO AN UNSAFE LEVEL AT LOW MILES AND FAR BEFORE ANY OTHER OXIDATION FORMED. BY 120,000 MILES, FRAME HAD SEVERE RUST, CORRODED COMPLETELY THROUGH FRONT AND REAR TOW HOOK SECTIONS, LOWER RADIATOR SUPPORT, AND LARGE SECTIONS OF MAIN FRAME RAILS (WORSE TOWARDS REAR NEAR SUSPENSION MOUNTING). BODY DOESN'T EVEN HAVE THE BEGINNING OF ANY RUST/OXIDATION ON UNDERSIDE OR EXTERIOR, BUT ALL FRAME AND SUSPENSION COMPONENTS ARE CORRODING SEVERELY AT AN ACCELERATED RATE. ATTACHED IMAGES ARE AFTER REMOVING LOOSE RUST WITH WIRE WHEEL TO SEE TRUE STRUCTURAL DAMAGE.

RE: NHSTA ACTION # DP18002. I OWN A 2004 TOYOTA 4RUNNER AND HAVE HAD PROBLEMS SIMILAR TO THOSE NOTED IN THE REFERENCED CASE. UPON READING THE CASE DETAILS I INVESTIGATED MY 4RUNNER AND FOUND SIMILAR SERIOUS STRUCTURAL CORROSION PROBLEMS. I CONSULTED WITH A LOCAL VIRGINIA MOTOR VEHICLE STATE INSPECTOR AND LEARNED THAT THE CORROSION WAS SO SEVERE, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT PASS INSPECTION AND BE LEGALLY, OR SAFELY, DRIVEN. I HAD THIS DAMAGE REPAIRED, AT SIGNIFICANT COST TO MYSELF, TO RETURN THE VEHICLE TO USABLE AND TRUSTWORTHY CONDITION. I WRITE IN SUPPORT OF THE REFERENCE CASE. PLEASE KEEP ME INFORMED OF ANY PROGRESS IN THIS CASE. THE "WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN DATE" IS THE DATE OF DISCOVERY.

VEHICLE HAS DEVELOPED SEVERE RUST HOLES IN THE FRAME, SUFFICIENT TO FAIL NY STATE INSPECTION. HOLES HAVE APPEARED, AND THE METAL AROUND THE HOLES IS ALSO SOFT DUE TO RUST. THIS WAS BROUGHT TO OUR ATTENTION WHEN WE BOUGHT THE CAR OUT OF STATE, REGISTERED IT IN NY, AND THE VEHICLE FAILED ON UNSAFE FRAME RUST.

RUST. I WAS TOLD I MAY NOT PASS INSPECTION NEXT TIME BECAUSE OF THE BADLY RUSTED FRAME. ALONG WITH THAT ISSUE, THE REAR HATCH IS RUSTING OFF THE VEHICLE. IT CAN NO LONGER OPEN AND CLOSE BECAUSE THE LATCHING MECHANISM HAS RUSTED OFF. THE REST OF THE VEHICLE IS PRETTY MUCH RUST FREE. WHY HAS IT RUSTED AWAY SO BADLY?

TRUCK HAS BEEN WELL CARED FOR AND HAS 330K MILES ON IT. ALWAYS CLEAN AND MAINTAINED PROPERLY BY MYSELF AND PREVIOUS OWNERS. FRAME IS SHOWING SIGNS OF EXCESSIVE RUST IN THE FRONT BETWEEN THE WHEELS AND AT ALMOST ALL OF THE WELDED AREAS. SOME AREAS OF FRAME ARE COMING OFF IN CHUNKS AS IT APPEARS TO BE ROTTING FROM THE INSIDE OUT. THIS IS ALSO AFFECTING FUEL/BRAKE LIKES AS WELL AS SUSPENSION COMPONENTS. AFTER CHECKING UNDER MY 2004 4RUNNER FOR A FAULTY FOG LIGHT CONNECTION I NOTICED A LOT OF RUST ON THE FRONT FRAME. AFTER FURTHER INVESTIGATION I FOUND IT TO BE COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH. THERE ISN'T MUCH HOLDING THE BUMPER ON THERE

MY FRAME IS ROTTED OUT FROM THE INSIDE OUT. FRONT RADIATOR SUPPORT IS COMPLETELY RUSTED OUT. VEHICLE ONLY HAS 105,000 MILES. TOYOTA SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING THE FRAME. ACCORDING TO THE PETITION TO INVESTIGATE, 4RUNNER OWNERS CLAIM THE FRAMES EXPERIENCE EXCESSIVE CORROSION AND THE SAME TYPE OF FRAMES WERE CITED IN A PREVIOUS $3.4 BILLION CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT. INCLUDED IN THE LAWSUIT WERE ABOUT 1.5 MILLION TACOMA, TUNDRA AND SEQUOIA TRUCKS, BUT THE PETITIONER SAYS THE 4RUNNER SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED BUT THE ATTORNEYS DIDN'T THINK THERE WERE ENOUGH CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS. NHTSA SAYS IT COULDN'T IDENTIFY ANY CRASHES OR INJURIES RELATED TO RUSTED FRAMES OR SUSPENSIONS, BUT OWNERS HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT ALMOST LOSING CONTROL OF THE SUVS DUE TO RUSTED AXLES AND FRAMES. PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS AS THIS IS MY ONLY VEHICLE.

DASHBOARD SINGLE LINE CRACK FROM DRIVER'S SIDE CONTINUOUS THROUGH HALFWAY INTO THE PASSENGER'S SIDE.

WHILE HAVING THE TIRES REPLACED, THE MECHANICS WERE UNABLE TO LOWER THE SPARE TIRE. AFTER CALLING FOR BACKUP THE MECHANICS WERE ABLE TO CUT THE TIRE FROM THE VEHICLE. THIS WAS BEFORE A TRIP TO ATLANTIC CITY, SO I HAD TOYOTA REPLACE THE HOIST AT MY COST TO REPAIR (UNWARE OF THE RUST AND FRAME ISSUES). THE 4RUNNER WAS APPROXIMATELY 12 YEARS OLD WHEN THE PROBLEM WAS IDENTIFIED. I DO NOT KNOW HOW LONG THE HOIST WAS BAD BEFORE THAT DATE BECAUSE I NEVER HAD TO USE THE HOIST. THE HOIST WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED. I'M REPORTING THIS NOW SO THAT OTHER OWNERS CAN CHECK THEIR HOIST AND FRAMES. THE FRAMES ARE DANGEROUS (RUSTED AND FALLING APART) AND WILL EVENTUALLY BE THE CAUSE OF SOMEONE'S ACCIDENT AND POTENTIAL DEATH. I'VE CONTACTED MY STATE SENATOR TO LOOK INTO THE FRAME INVESTIGATION AND WHY IT IS TAKING SO LONG. HOPEFULLY, I WILL HEAR...

CHASSIS, BRAKES AND ALL UNDER CARRIAGE OF 2004 TOYOTA 4 RUNNER IS RUSTED. SOON THE CAR WILL NOT PASS INSPECTION. I DO NOT LIVE IN A SALT WATER ZONE. MY CAR HAS NEVER DRIVEN THROUGH SALT WATER. I HAVE 71,000 MILES ON THE CAR. THE BRAKES WERE SO RUSTED THAT I HAD TO REPLACE THEM. THE CAR WILL BE TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE SOON.

FRAME RUST. THE FRAME ON MY 2004 TOYOTA 4R 4D 4X4 SR5/SPT HAS COMPLETELY RUSTED UNDER THE RADIATOR CROSS MEMBER. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION THE ENTIRE INSIDE OF THE FRAME IS RUSTING TO THE OUTSIDE IN VARIOUS LOCATIONS. THIS WILL QUICKLY BECOME A SAFETY CONCERN SINCE EVERYTHING IS BOLTED TO THE FRAME. MY VEHICLE HAD LESS THAN 100K MILES WHEN THE RUST WAS DISCOVERED.

FRAME RAIL ROTTING AND I'VE ALWAYS PARKED IN A GARAGE!

FRAME FOUND TO BE RUSTING AWAY AND CAN NOT BE SAFELY INSPECTED. WAS TOLD BY SAFETY MECHANIC AREAS ARE VERY BAD AND PARTS MAY START FALLING OFF.

I OWN A 2004 TOYOTA 4RUNNER WITH SIGNIFICANT RUST ON THE FRAME THAT HAS NEARLY RUSTED THROUGH IN SOME AREAS. THROUGH MY RESEARCH I DETERMINED THAT THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE FOR MANY TOYOTA VEHICLES CLOSE TO THE 2004 MODEL YEAR. APPARENTLY THE FRAME WAS NOT PROPERLY COATED AND RUST HAS GROWN ON MY VEHICLE AS WELL AS MANY OTHERS AT A MUCH FASTER RATE THAN IS TYPICALLY EXPECTED. I AM WORRIED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF MY VEHICLE AS A RESULT.
