Crack formed in windshield. Did not notice any chips or impact points. Crack formed on front right corner through the heated wiper blade rest. This seems to be an ongoing issue with Subaru.

On August 19, 2022, approximately 11:30 a.m., after parking my 2022 Subaru Outback Limited in a private driveway, the windshield began cracking from the bottom edge and has grown 25 inches toward the center of the windshield. There was no impact to the windshield. The weather was moderately cool--74 degrees, slight mist precipitation (wiper use minimal), and no wind. And, my previous drive (as with my history with this vehicle, 2,831 miles) was a gentle and uneventful four miles. I've spent fourty years entering and exiting the driveway and driving in that area, with other cars, and never once had a problem. I spent twenty years investigating traffic accidents and vehicle related problems in metro-Atlanta (Cobb County Police 1992-2012), and never saw a problem like this. But, since buying the car (my first Subaru), I've read countless Internet posts of similar events, from folks who have purchased a Subaru in...

Crack appeared on lower passenger section of windshield for no apparent reason. Windshield was replaced by certified repair center due to same issue a month ago with less than 2000 miles of driving.

I purchased this vehicle brand new in August 2021 (so 1 year ago exactly). There is an issue with their windshields and cracking immediately the second you even get the smallest rock impact. Just today I got another one cracked across my entire windshield within seconds and the impact point is smaller than 1cm. This is my FIFTH windshield crack and replacement in ONE year. I am in insurance and in 12 years of being in the industry and also driving multiple vehicles myself... I have NEVER myself or my clients had this many cracked windshields within 1 year of a brand new vehicle. There was already a class action lawsuit on the windshields from 2014 to 2018 Outback models... clearly 2022 model is doing the same thing. Also, funny enough, in financing they offer glass coverage you can purchase which is something i have never seen financing offer and...

I was driving down the highway with no other vehicles around me. Suddenly, the middle of the windshield cracked from the bottom edge up and toward the passenger side. The car was parked overnight, and the crack spread further toward the driver side, directly in my sight line. There are 4,300 miles on the car.

Cracked windshield, brittle thin glass causes visibility issues!
#11477213 |
I walked out to my car on Monday morning June 27th and the windshield on my 2022 Outback Wilderness was cracked on passenger side. No prior Rock Impact and only 2,807 miles . Submitted a claim with the dealer. Have not heard back yet. Manager said to call him back on Friday.

We purchased this 2022 Subaru Outback on 7/19/22. My wife was driving in the rain to church. She parked the car and attended the church service. After the about 2 hours she went got in the car and noticed 3 cracks in the front windshield. There were no known impacts to the windshield. There are 3 cracks originating from a center point. 2 of the cracks are about 12 inches longs with the 3rd being about 4 inches long. This cracking started on 7/31/22. We haven't even made the 1st payment yet. Very distressing to say the least.

Multiple windshield cracks from small rocks on the highway. Crack has spread across the windshield. We have only owned the car 3 months.

There is a defect in the windshield. I’ve replaced the windshield twice. The first time a rock hit it and it caused the entire windshield to crack. I got the windshield replaced and a week later it cracked again. I replaced it again and 30 minutes later it happened again. My father in law has an Outback as well with the same issue. I also have a colleague with the same exact model vehicle with the same issue. I researched online and there are many owners that have complained about the same thing. When I talked to the dealership where the car was purchased the salesman seemed to have heard about the issue before. The windshield repair shop also said that there are a lot of Subarus that come through the shop with the same issue. I’ve had rocks hit my windshields in past vehicles and I have never seen...

We left the outback wilderness out Overnight under no trees or anything that may cause damage like that. Come outside in the morning, and bam, a 13 inch crack in a semi S shape with no visible chip from a rock. There is absolutely no reason there should be a crack, even if there was a small chip in the glass. That's the cause of poor craftsmanship and this deserves a lawsuit alone. Has Subaru of America learned nothing from what happened with the 2015 to 2016 outback and legacy models? What about their most recent lawsuit in 2019 that ranged for the 2017 to 2019 Foresters that also awarded the victim of poor windshields? Do we need to have another lawsuit? If that's the case so be it but I seriously hope the NHTSA kicks off a recall so there is no need for a lawsuit. I love Subaru,...

Very tiny rock hit the windshield without much force but still caused a ding in the windshield. Glass appears to be excessively fragile.

I have 2022 Subaru Outback Limited XT. The windshield cracked 7 days after purchase. Only have 200 miles on it. Drove at 60mph and suddenly saw a crack on the passenger side of the windshield. Didn't hear any pop sound. The crack was about 17 inch long spreading from the bottom edge passenger side to the center of the windshield. Took the car to the dealership and was told the windshield is not under warranty.

I have the 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness, which is supposed to have "Gorilla Glass" for the windshield (which looks like two windshields sandwiched together), but only the outer glass was cracked. The windshield developed a cracked starting from the mid-height passenger side edge, and continued towards the driver side, stopping just prior to the middle of the windshield and then looping under. The vehicle was parked, and when I got in the vehicle the following morning I noticed the crack. I looked closely for an impact point, and there were none. I took pictures and video of the windshield. I contacted Subaru (Pembroke Pines, FL) and they said they had not heard of any issues and told me to reach out to my insurance company, which I did and they directed me to safelite AutoGlass in Miami (2757 SW 8 Street, Miami, FL. 33135) to have the windshield and safety...

Windshield cracked completely without impact
#11473665 |
1. Front Windshield cracks easily instead of chipping. Appears to be under pressure in a strange way and it cracks then starts to delaminate. I had 2 windshields replaced within 30 days. Water also starts to enter the crack and it impacts the wiper blades when in use. 2. Center Info-Tainment system in underpowered to the degree that touch response is laggy to the degree to be dangerous. With all the climate controls, radio, gps, and other controls now on the touch screen this slowness is dangerous to the point that should warrant a recall. I've had a system update done and this did not fix the slow touch response. It appears to be underpowered hardware.

Driving and thought I heard slight cracking noises, couldn't figure out what it was. About 2 minutes later a huge crack about 18" spontaneously appeared from the passenger side of the windshield to nearly the middle of the windshield. No rocks or impact, just out of nowhere.

Windshield cracked for no reason at all. This vehicle had been parked on my driveway and had not been driven in about 3 days. There are no trees or anything near the driveway that could have fallen on the car. While the car was parked on my driveway, the car was facing away from the street. The next morning the crack had already expanded and covered most of the middle part of the windshield. Contacting a local dealer was a nightmare. The dealer person said they're not responsible for a replacement. They looked the other way saying "we just sell the cars", and suggested to take it to Subaru of America. I'm currently waiting for a response from Subaru of America.

We had a rock fly up and hit the windshield 7" below top center of windshield, on impact the crack was over 12" in length, now the Crack is now over 24" in length.

Drive to visit family, no rock chips, no accidents; pulled in about 7pm. Next morning Woke up at 0600 to a severe crack in the windshield.

On 7/7/2022 I was traveling the Blue Ridge parkway and heard a pop sound and saw about 5 inch windshield crack from edge of my Driver A-post frame traveling horizontally toward the center of the vehicle. I did not see anything hit the windshield. By the time I got to a rest stop the crack continued to travel across toward the center of the vehicle. I saw no evidence of impact at the edge of windshield or along crack. I had to lower my seat so as to see below the crack because the sun on the windshield was causing a bright glare spot from light refraction. When I got to Lynchburg I called the closest Subaru dealership. They stated they that something must have hit it and if they had to order a replacement it would be several days and suggested I call my insurance company and a. Auto...

Windshield cracked without any obvious impact. Passenger side, lower half of glass. Crack came from the edge of the glass.

Purchased a 2022 Subaru Outback in late August 2021. We been driving regularly and on Friday July the 1st, we were leaving home going to dinner, got in the car to a crack in the windshield extending from the top center edge of the windshield to the center of the windshield. No impact chip is visible, or by touch. No known rock or debris impact while I was driving. We have been very careful with my nice new car and this is extremely disappointing. Due to the holiday, we were unable to contact the dealer until Tuesday July the 5th. As of the day we contact the dealer the crack is now two thirds down the windshield on a vertical plane and beginning to spider horizontally from the center to the left and the right.

Windshield failed while car sitting in driveway. No impact found on windshield. Took to a dealership where they refused to acknowledge that it was not caused by impact and would not replace. Having to spend $1000 to fix a defect on vehicle.

Windshield chips and cracks easily- I have had my car for less than 4k miles- I had one small chip near top of windshield, and within 2 weeks time it has spread almost all the way down and through the windshield. In that time I have had 2 other small chips to the glass and as of now they have not spread in the heat but I will be watching closely. The crack effects my ability to see road clearly and is worrisome that any rock on the road has the ability to cause not only damage to the vehicle, but could cause an accident. In speaking with a coworker who has similar make and model to me, they have the same issues since buying their car in the last year.

My windshield simply cracked for no reason that I can tell. I parked it in garage and came out the next morning and there was a crack all the way across to middle of the car. Started on the driver side mid height of the windshield and ran horizontally to just under the eyesight cameras. I don't see where anything hit it or chipped it.

Windshield developed a crack of about 20” that starts at the passenger side of the vehicle and worked its way inward.
#11469899 |
Large crack (roughly 18in) appeared overnight on passenger side windshield. No known cause as it was parked in a garage when crack appeared overnight.

-Windshield has spontaneous crack with no indication of any dent or chips due to object hitting. The vehicle is extremely new, picked up a month ago. -The windshield crack is getting bigger and likely will be a hazard for the driver and passenger of the vehicle. -Dealer is saying this is not covered under warranty. Dealer is saying go to insurance and they will replace at zero cost. -This will probably be my first and last Subaru. There are many posts online with other Outback owners reporting this issue.

Windshield large cracking in less than 3 months of ownership. Crack began initially about a week ago, around 4-6" in length, and has grown substantially to over 20" in the time I have waited for a replacement. Local subaru dealership has looked at the crack and taken photos. No replacement is available yet. Crack size is currently around 22" total length, and spreading daily with temperature fluctuations.

Windshield spontaneously cracked while car was parked- I had just gotten in the car and waiting for my passenger to enter when it cracked from the driver's side edge to center of glass. Upon inspection, no crater or damage was visible or palpable.

Windshield cracked after 1,200 miles. I do not recall any rock hit and do not see any hit point.
#11468520 |
Windshield spontaneously cracked with no damage occurring to it. Subaru claims they do not cover window repair under warranty.

The windshield cracked after only having the car for 10 days

MY 2022 OUTBACK HAS LESS THAN 3,000 MILES ON IT. ALWAYS GARAGED. I PARKED IT OUTSIDE OVER THE NOON HOUR, CAME OUT AND THE WINDSHIELD HAD A 6" CRACK ON THE PASSENGER SIDE; CRACKED FROM THE EDGE MIDWAY UP. THERE ARE NO ROCK CHIPS OR IMPACT DAMAGE. I CALLED SUBARU ADVISORY LINE AND ADVISED THEM OF PROBLEM THEY SAID TO CONTACT DEALER TO GET INSPECTED FOR MFG DEFECTS. I HAVE REACHED OUT THE DEALER FOR APPT. RESOLUTION IS IN PROGRESS. THIS IS MY #8 SUBARU AND HAVE NEVER ENCOUNTERED THIS BEFORE.

I came out to my car in the morning to go to work and there was a huge S-shaped crack in the windshield radiating from the base of the window from under the plastic. Nothing hit it and there is no visible strike. It continues to grow. It is smooth single, long crack about a foot or more long. Very strange and appears like a manufacturer defect as the car only has 2,196 miles.

I drove to work, parked my car and 10 hours later came out and there was a crack in the windshield. Nothing hit my window on the drive to work. I park my car in a gated lot with cameras. It is a smooth cut from the edge of the window and goes across just past the halfway mark. I immediately drove to the dealership and made them aware. The crack is exactly in my line of sight which makes the sun refract directly into my eyes when it is sunny.
#11466490 |
A spontaneous crack appeared in the windshield running from the passenger side to the middle of the car. There are no impact points, nothing hit the car, it is a clean line. The car was parked in my garage overnight, woke up to find a linear crack starting from the edge of the passenger side to the middle of the windshield.

Bought this new car this April. After using it in local for only one month with 1000 miles, windshield developed a 20 ~ 30 inch crack from the passenger side. Went to the dealer to argue. I told them no rock strike and the root reason is faulty glass. The dealer didn't provide any help and gave me a wrong phone number. In over 20 years of driving different cars, we haven't had windshield issue.
#11466479 |
The windshield was hit by a rock chip, and a tiny divot formed. Within minutes, it had spider-webbed out with cracks stretching 12-18" in multiple directions. I've never seen such a tiny divot propagate so rapidly - I've had the car < 14 days. From the sound of the impact, I would have expected the windshield to shrug off the hit with no damage. The ongoing propagation makes me seriously consider whether the windshield is actually safe - the entire thing seems like it's under internal stress that could result in a catastrophic failure from minor impacts. The dealer/manufacturer have not inspected the problem, but I'll bring it to them ASAP.
#11466104 |
Windshield developed a 14-16 inch crack from the passenger side. No rock strike or other known damage occurred, crack seems to be due to faulty glass. Temperature was moderate at the time (55 to 60 degrees).
#11465478 |
Windshield suddenly cracked for no apparent reason. Vehicle was parked and crack extends almost halfway across the windshield on the driver side. No signs of damage being caused by an object hitting the windshield. This will interfere with the safety and emergency braking system cameras located at the top of the windshield.
#11464754 |
In my many years of driving quite a number of different cars, I've never had a car's windshield perform so poorly. In only 10k miles of just daily commuting my windshield has accumulated 8 chips. Luckily the windshield hasn't cracked yet, but I fear its only a matter of time. It seems just the smallest impact WILL chip the windshield if not crack it. This seems to be an ongoing problem with the Carlex OEM windshields Subaru continues to use and is a clear safety concern to their customers as well as a costly fix if Subaru doesn't cover the cost.

Spontaneous crack of the windshield
#11464731 |
I bought a 2022 Subaru Outback and have had it for 3 months. It wav very hot yesterday and I took it through a car wash. When it came out of the car wash the windshield was cracked. It has several spider cracks coming down from the roof. Each of the 3 cracks were about 4 inches long. By the time i drove home the cracks are now 12 inches. This is very disheartening.

While a relative was driving my 2 week old 2022 subaru outback, he had a minor impact from a very small rock that left no visible damage. The next day, a large crack had appeared in the middle of the driver’s side from the edge to the rear view mirror. I could not get an appointment to get it replaced until next saturday and over the last 3 days the crack has grown significantly, including a piece that is cracked all the way around. I am worried about catastrophic failure on even a short gentle drive to work. It is extremely disappointing to think that this might be an ongoing problem with the car. In 36 years of driving many different cars nothing like this has ever happened.
#11464669 |
Windshield cracked on its own while parked inside home garage.
#11464313 |
Vehicle has 10,800 miles and this is the third broken windshield. The smallest road debris results in failure of the Carlex factory equipped windshield. I have never replaced a windshield in 35 years of driving many vehicles, this 2022 Subaru Outback appears to break continually. It is a costly repair.
#11464268 |
On a hot day, 90F my window cracked after i turned on the AC unit. Next day it cracked even further.
#11463837 |
No impact event. Entered car in the morning and noticed a 1-2" horizontal crack in windshield, with no sign of impact. Over a few days, that 1-2" crack became a 3-foot monster. Of course, Subaru claims it was due to impact.
