Purchased the 2022 outback in April and very shortly after, had a cracked windshield right in the middle of the driver's line of sight. There was no noticeable sign of impact on the windshield. Replaced with a "deal" from the dealer at $1000. Not even 4k miles later, another Crack that's spread on the passenger side, in the middle of the windshield. Dealer says $1500 to replace (insurance is a $1000 deductible). Again. No noticeable sign of impact causing the Crack. Looking to now replace this new vehicle as our household cannot afford to replace these windshields every few thousand miles.

While driving small pebble fell on windshield causing approx. 1mm chipp. Within minutes that chipp turned into 9-10" crack from bottom center into passenger side. Never had a windshield so sensitive. I have 2014 Forester with few similar windshield chipps but they stay the same, do not cause cracks. It looks to me that Outback windshield does not hold up against normal use.

stayed in Bangor Maine cold night frost on windshield, turned on defrost within several minute my wife noticed two small cracks at the bottom of the windshield ,within several minutes the progress up wards for about 5bin and joined together and continued to about 10 on and started across to the drivers side ,the crack is about b14 in long at this time ,wet to a subaru dealer they tried to convince it was a rock, I pointed out the crack was at the bottom of the window and ,said he could nothing.Went to a nation repair window business they confirmed it was not a rock, their opinion there is a flaw in the glass. There was no prior symptom to this taking place

The windshield on my 2022 Subaru Outback has cracked twice with a year's time without impact! The first crack in February 2023 was detected after the car was parked overnight. The crack extended from the edge of the windshield on the drivers side and into the field of vision by approx. 24". The dealer said it was an impact however no impact of any kind occurred. I reported it to Corproate Subaru offices (Case#230120-1800472), who agreed to replace the windshield and the associated eyesight camera equipment, most likely because there are many incidences of this happening with their vehicles. The most recent re-occurrence of the windshield cracking without impact happened in early Dec. 2023. Again, no impact occurred and the crack was found after the vehicle was parked for about an hour after I attended a gallery opening. This time the dealer once again performed the same test performed in...

This car has only 6030 miles on it and is less than 2 years old. I came out of the grocery store and the windshield was cracked. There was no ding or something that hit it. The crack just was suddenly there and started underneath the rubber lining around the windshield at the bottom. The crack has grown to 1/3rd the entire size of the windsheid...all by itself. This is a $1200 windshield to replace. I understand this is a big problem with Subaru windshield on 2022 model Outbacks and CrossTrek

Driving 70mph on an interstate and the windshield spontaneously popped, creating a long, large crack on the left side of the windshield.
#11557361 |
Less than 3 months ago I reported 11543521. Now, the very first rock to hit this new OEM replacement windshield caused a 7-8 inch crack to form in the middle and start to propagate. There are still less than 8000 miles on the car.

In the past 10 months, the windshield on my vehicle spontaneously cracked twice while I was driving (December 2022 and October 2023). In both instances there was no perceptible impact; a crack suddenly appeared on the left (driver's side) edge of the windshield, about 1/3 of the way from the bottom, and spread across my field of vision. This is a safety issue because it affect the driver's ability to see the roadway. It might also affect the strength and integrity of the windshield itself should it actually be hit by road debris or other objects. The vehicle was inspected by the Subaru service center both times when it was repaired. Again, if there was impact in either of the incidents, it was imperceptible, and certainly should not have caused any damage to windshield, let alone the extensive cracking that occurred.

Small object hit the top of the windshield and created a star 20 minutes later it spread to a 17 inch crack

A month ago I was sitting in my car in a parking lot when the windshield on the passenger side cracked about 1 foot in an "S" shape. There were no other cars, rocks, etc. around and you cannot see or feel an impact point on the crack or anywhere on the windshield. The crack has spread over the last week and formed a "T" split in line with the rearview mirror.

Windshield spontaneously cracked while we were starting the car in a parking lot. No movement and no impact points along the crack. Initiated at the bottom of windshield exactly at the center point and worked up toward the middle. Dealers (West Houston Subaru, followed by Gillman Subaru) could not point out an impact point along the crack but indicated this was not a dealer problem.

While parked for about two hours, the vehicle windshield cracked from the drivers side edge across the middle of the drivers field of view approximately 15-18 inches. There are no signs of any impact to the windshield to cause such a crack.

2022 Outback with 24,000 miles, was parked in the garage all weekend and found an 18 inch crack in the drivers side windshield starting on the left edge. This windshield was replaced 5 months ago due for the same reason. Nothing hit the windshield while driving. Both cracks appeared while the car was parked in a ramp or garage.
#11546322 |
When in a parking lot the windshield started cracking from bottom up and formed a T. Crack is about 12 inches long in front windshield. There are no signs of a rock or anything else that hit the windshield.
#11543521 |
The very first rock to ever hit the windshield landed around 9pm (6000 miles total on the car). The next day driving around 10am in the rain a 30" crack formed, that eventually spread from one side of the windshield to the middle.

I own a 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness Trim. I had my car parked in my garage on Aug -23 night without any damage and when I checked next day Aug-24 around noon I noticed windshield had a large 1.5 foot crack on the passenger side.

This is the second time I've had a large crack appear from the edge of the windshield with no obvious damage.
#11535157 |
Windshield cracked for no apparent reason. 6-8" crack near the bottom and extending up the middle of the windshield. This is the 2nd crack in less than 10 months.

I drove to work; did not hear or see any rocks hit the windshield. Parked in a carefully chosen spot - not near any roads or work areas; not near a tree - and the windshield was cracked. No apparent reason. A single line crack coming out from the middle of the driver's side of the windshield, stopping in the middle of the windshield just past the mirror. It is right at the sight line. I have filed with my insurance company. Police refused to take report as they said it didn't appear to be that someone had maliciously hit it. Car is garaged at home. 19,000 miles. I see that this appears to be a common problem with Subarus - topic on reddit and other places.

Windshield cracked on passenger side of vehicle without any impact to glass, extreme temperature change, or pressure change. Crack continues to grow, doubling in length in a matter of minutes.
#11531503 |
The original windshield cracked a month into ownership of the vehicle. I took it to a Subaru dealership and paid out of pocket to have them install a new OEM windshield. A year later, the windshield cracked again starting from the top edge, and was not caused by a rock or other object. The vehicle was parked when the crack formed.

Our 2022 Subaru Outback windshield has been replaced on 2 occasions & repaired on 1 occasion due to cracking caused by unknown impacts. It has now cracked again while passing a vehicle on the interstate. The vehicle had just 16250 miles at the time of this occurrence. Sadly, we have had more windshield changes than oil changes at this point. Thankfully, we haven't experienced any issues regarding warning lamps or malfunctions of the safety systems as the cracks have not propagated into the cameras line of sight, but we're only one incident away from that possibility. Hopefully this won't result in a safety system malfunction.

On 10/10/21 my wife and I were sitting in a parking lot when we heard a loud crack. The windshield of my Subaru cracked from midline on the passenger side post thru the middle of the windshield. After going through SOA and multiple times back to the dealer, the dealership repaired the windshield for no charge. Three weeks ago my wife and I were sitting at my son's house and a crack appeared once again starting at the bottom of the passenger side, up and through the center of my windshield. I will be working with the dealership to have this one replaced. They told me my first windshield replacement was "complimentary, and one time" so I am not sure how this new repair will go. These windshields have to be considered a safety issue based on the numbers I am starting to see on line.

Our 2022 Subaru Outback windshield cracked for a second time with no clear reason. If there was a rock impact it was very light and not noticeable, certainly not sufficient to cause a crack in any other vehicle I have ever driven. We had a 2018 Subaru Legacy and had the windshield crack twice with little or no impact. This is the second time since new that the Subaru Outback windshield has cracked. I have been driving for thirty five years and have never had a windshield crack in any vehicle ever, even with very firm rock strikes. This will be the fourth Subaru windshield I have replaced in just a few years - the second in a year or so. There was a class action lawsuit already in 2018 on this issue. It is clear that Subaru has not fixed this dangerous problem.

While driving my Subaru 2022 Outback with Eyesight Asssist, a 20 inch crack appeared from top left windshield down about 4 inches and across to center of windshield without sound of impact other than plop sound associated with bug hits, not a rock ping. When dealer reviewed, they pointed to a small impact point at center of crack (prior to expansion another 10 inchs the next morning). Impact area 2mm long, 1mm wide. Depth was even less shallow. Because of impact indication, Dealer said it needed to be handled through insurance, not vehicle warranty. I believe this is more a warranty issue.

The windshield made a "pop" sound and had spontaneously cracked from the driver's side pillar towards the center of the windshield, without warning or clear cause. This was all while sitting in the driveway, not in motion. The dealership service department inspection found no point of impact.

On my second windshield that has cracked.
#11527496 |
Windshield cracked for no apparent reason. It was a 12 in line that started at the passenger side and moved across the windshield horizontally.
#11527533 |
Windshield developed a major crack all the way across it from the smallest nick 36 hours after the Nick occurred. This makes me very concerned for the integrity of the windshield in a crash. I am far from the only report of such an item.
#11527174 |
Windshield crack caused by either a defective windscreen or incorrect installation. -no evidence of damage prior. -cracked overnight. -on both sides of the crack the windshield was offset, one side being higher than the other. The collision center advised that there was likely a 'bad batch' of windshields Subaru installed.
#11527196 |
While driving, a giant crack appeared in the windshield. This was not caused by an impact.
#11527003 |
Spontaneous windshield crack that spread while vehicle was parked and no damage due to rock or other cause. Appears to be stress fracture and is approximately 20” in length and spreading. This happened previously on my 2020 Subaru Outback in the same exact area of the windshield.

Driving down the highway, I noticed a small crack in the windshield. I didn't hear anything hit it and did not have any cars in front of me. By the time I got home, 20 minutes later, the small crack had grown quite large . I put the car in the garage and didn't drive any more that day. Got up the next day and noticed that overnight the crack had started growing the opposite direction. I got the window replaced and 6 days later it happened again. First time was May 4, 2023. Fixed on May 16 and cracked again May 22. I've been told that replacing windshields in the 2022 Outback is quite common.

Windshield cracked for no reason.

I have had to have my windshield replaced twice since I bought it last June. The first incident occurred when I was traveling on a highway. A small rock hit the driver's side of the windshield and immediately a crack developed. I had the windshield replaced. Within ten days, a crack appeared at the bottom center edge of the new windshield. It was not there when I parked my car at work, but it was there when I left for the day. I even reviewed security cameras but saw nothing that would contribute to the crack. A few days later, another crack emerged at the center edge of the passenger side. Again, this was while the car was parked. Neither crack was in my line of sight so I continued to drive until recently as both cracks have spidered all over the windshield. In scheduling another replacement Subaru tells me...

Windshield crack from bottom while driving

The car only left in the parking lot for 8 hours and then crack. No sign of hit.

Small chip in windshield turned into larger crack, spreading across windshield by the morning.

Car was parked in garage. 14 inch crack appeared in windshield with no impact. Crack just appeared while car was parked.

Bought 2022 Subaru with eyesight system October 2022. We have replaced this windshield 4 times. Once was 1 month old after backing out of garage in cold weather and it cracked spontaneously. Since then we replaced entire windshield in December 2022, Feb 2023, March 2023 and May 2023 Subaru reports windshield is now made from acoustic glass but are not holding up against normal use.

Small crack appeared and then became huge

Never had a windshield so sensitive in the many many cars I've owned over the years. We haver had several chips filled that just randomly appear on the glass and never heard or saw anything hit. Finally one morning went out to the car to find a 12" long crack on the passenger side of the windshield. Paid my deductible and had it replaced and the NEXT DAY, less than 24 hours later sitting in a parking lot and it randomly cracked again. Took it back to the repair shop and they said it wasn't a problem with their install and I need to pay AGAIN for another windshield? These things shouldn't be cracking and chipping this easily.

I was parked on my family’s driveway in Southern California. The car had been stations for about 3hrs and was parked outside. 10-30seconds after unlocking and starting the car I had a loud crunch/crack sound at which point I saw a 2-4” dual crack that appeared in the centre of the windshield. This happened while stationary without any impact. The crack size increased with vechicle movement. I’d like to report this as a concern give the sudden and unexpected nature of this crack to the front windshield

Windshield crack formed despite no outside cause. In morning it was there. I went to Schlossman Subaru and they documented situation and said they would contact Subaru. I have tried to contact them several times for follow-up but they have not responded.

Horizontal stress crack middle of windshield from driver side to almost center of windshield. Stress crack keeps extending towards passenger side. Car was parked outside, sunny day @ 78DEG. Are clostest to edge I can get my fingernail in maybe the thickness of 3-4 sheets of paper. Line of site obscured due to crack.

The windshield developed a large crack while sitting in the driveway. It started about midway up on the passanger side and extended about a foot and a half.
#11518373 |
Large crack developed in the lower/middle driver’s side windshield, spreading to the middle of the windshield. There is no obvious/apparent damage that caused this, with the crack starting at the edge of the windshield, and spreading inward.

I drove my vehicle on Saturday April 1, 2023 without incident. There was no occurrence anything hitting the windshield. I returned home and did not drive the vehicle again until Monday April 3, 2023. I went to the garage to leave for work when I noticed a 15 inch crack in the windshield. The crack originates from the leading vertical edge on the driver side. There is no visible chip or other damage that would indicate debris struck the windshield. The vehicle has less than 18k miles on it and is parked in a garage 95% of the time it is not in use. The crack has continued to spread since the first day and now covers half of the windshields length.
#11515801 |
Early morning after sitting in the parking garage overnight, a crack randomly appeared from top middle portion of the front windshield and propagated vertically down the center of the windshield. The crack later spread through the center of the windshield after a few days. There appeared to be no other damage around the origin of the crack (center windshield area) nor was it due to negligence - the cause is unknown.

2022 Subaru Outback has has windshield replaced 3 times. And awaiting a new windshield AGAIN for 2 cracks. Current windshield was hit by rocks, within a day of each other. Very small impact site and both immediately cracked to about 6 inches on impact. Continue to spread in heather garage. First windshield hit by rock- cracked on impact, spread like wildfire. 2nd windshield cracked in garage less than a week after installation. Was told it was another rock and not covered under warranty. Not possible. Third windshield was installed, because, after the second windshield was installed, the windshield had a long, scratch in it. Glass company covered that. Now awaiting my fourth windshield to be installed. I have honestly never had this problem before. I have maybe gotten a chip in a window, that could be filled. But this is ridiculous. And expensive.
