DOOR HANDLES , INTERIOR, ARE CHEAPER PLASTIC THAN FOR CHILD'S TOY CAR. THREE OUT OF FOUR HAVE SHATTERED DURING NORMAL USE, THE FOURTH IS ALMOST COMPLETELY CRACKED. VEHICLE CANNOT BE OPENED TO EXIT FROM INSIDE. IMAGINE TRYING TO GET OUT IN WATER, OR OTHER EMERGENCY SITUATION. HAVE SPOKEN TO DEALER, AND CHRYSLER TAKES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS DEFECT. IN ADDITION, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FAILED AND THE CONTACT WAS NOT ABLE TO DETERMINE WHAT SPEED HE WAS TRAVELING OR THE AMOUNT OF GASOLINE FUEL IN THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN, BUT THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 57,000.
THE DOOR HANDLE IS CHEAP THE PLASTIC PIECE ON THREE DOORS HAS FALLEN APART. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM - YOU ARE HEREIN NOTIFIED THAT FAILURE TO MANDATE A RECALL WILL PUT NHTSA AS A LIABLE PARTY TO ANY SUIT. DOOR WILL NOT OPEN CAUSED BY INFERIOR FAULTY DESIGN. *TR

I OWN A 2006 JEEP COMMANDER WITH 78K MILES AND THE DRIVER FRONT AND PASSANGER REAR DOORS HAVE SHATTERED BEHIND THE HANDLE CAUSING THE HANDLE TO BECOME USLESS FROM THE INSIDE. I FEEL THIS IS A SAFTY ISSUE AS NO ONE CAN EXIT THE VEHICLE FROM THOSE DOOR IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY. AFTER DOING A LITTLE RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND THAT THIS PROBLEM IS NOT A ONE TIME OCCURANCE AND IS HAPPENING MORE AND MORE OFTEN. THE COST TO REPLACE THE WHOLE DOOR PANEL IS WELL OVER $600.00 EACH AND THAT FROM MY UNDERSTANDING IS THE ONLY FIX TO THIS LITTLE CHEAP PIECE OF PLASTIC BREAKING. HOW MANY SPECIFIC INCIDENT REPORTS DOES THE NHTSA NEED BEFORE THEY REQUIRE CHRYSLER TO EXPLAIN THEIR FAULTY/DEFECTIVE INTERIOR DOOR HANDLES? PLEASE REVIEW THE HIGH NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS THAT POINT TO FAILURE OF THE 2006 JEEP COMMANDER'S INTERIOR DOOR HANDLES AND BEGIN THE PROCESS TO REQUIRE A SAFETY RECALL. THIS IS NOT A COSMETIC ISSUE. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. THE PLASTIC HOUSING THAT HOLDS THE INTERIOR DOOR HANDLES IS BRITTLE, CAUSING THE HANDLE TO BREAK, WHICH RENDERS THE HANDLE INOPERABLE (FROM THE INSIDE). OCCUPANTS REPORT HAVING TO ROLL DOWN THEIR WINDOW TO UNLATCH THE DOOR FROM THE OUTSIDE. SAFETY ISSUE CONCERNING INOPERABLE INTERIOR DOOR HANDLES ON 2006 JEEP COMMANDER. OVER THE PAST THREE MONTHS, ALL FOUR INTERIOR DOOR HANDLE CASINGS HAVE BROKEN MAKING DOORS DIFFICULT OR IMPOSSIBLE TO OPEN FROM INSIDE THE VEHICLE. *TR
INTERIOR DOOR PANELS(BOTH FRONT DOORS) AT DOOR HANDLES THE PLASTIC AROUND HANDLES HAS CRACKED AND FALLEN OUT MAKING THE DOOR HANDLE SOMETIMES UNSTABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR. CONCERNED FROM A SAFETY STANDPOINT THAT AT SOME POINT THE DOORS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BE OPEN FROM THE INSIDE AND COULD BE TRAPPED INSIDE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY AND THE OPTION OF POWERING DOWN THE WINDOW IS NOT POSSIBLE.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER DOOR PANELS WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 58,000.

SURE ENOUGH WHEN MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING HE LEANED HIS KNEE ON THE DOOR AND THERE WAS A LOUD POP AND HANDLE CUP CAME OFF IN ABOUT 3-4 PIECES. I THEN NOTICED THAT THE PASSENGER DOOR HANDLE CUP WAS ALSO CRACKED, SO WITHIN A FEW MONTHS IT CAME OFF IN SEVERAL PIECES TOO. NOW WITH ABOUT 2 YEARS WITH THIS VEHICLE, I HAVE ALL 4 DOOR HANDLES BROKEN. I HAVE ALSO GOTTEN AN ESTIMATE AT THE DEALERSHIP WHEN I TOOK IT FOR SERVICE AND GOT AN ESTIMATE OF ABOUT 1,200 FOR 2 DOORS ONLY. I HAVE ALSO CHECK FOR PARTS ONLINE AND YOU NEED TO A DOOR TO GET THIS PIECE WHICH RANGES FROM 600 TO 1000 DOLLARS FOR 1 DOOR. NOW I AM...
A FEW MONTHS AGO THE INTERIOR DOOR TRIM ON THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT DOOR SHATTERED AROUND THE DOOR HANDLE. THE DOOR HANDLE STILL RELEASES THE DOOR BUT YOU NEED TO WIGGLE IT AROUND A BIT AND GET IT ALIGNED PROPERLY BEFORE BEING ABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR. NOT DRIVING THE VEHICLE OFTEN AND THINKING IT WAS JUST A SMALL, EASILY REPLACED PART I DID NOT TAKE IT TOO SERIOUSLY. IT WAS ONLY WHEN I LOOKED INTO IT, REALIZED IT WAS THE WHOLE DOOR PANEL AND SAW THAT SO MANY OTHER OWNERS WERE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM THAT I DECIDED TO REPORT IT. THE TECHNICIAN STATED ALL FOUR DOOR PANELS WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,000.
THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE DOOR HANDLES HAVE GRADUALLY CRACKED AND FALLEN APART SO THAT IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO OPEN THE DOOR FROM THE INSIDE OF THE CAR. THIS PROBLEM HAS ONLY OCCURRED ON THE FRONT DOORS, NOT THE BACK-SEAT DOORS AND BEGAN GRADUALLY BACK IN 2009 - 2010. THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR LATCH OF OUR 2006 JEEP COMMANDER 4X4 SUFFERED A FAILURE CAUSING THE DOOR TO NOT BE ABLE TO BE OPENED FROM THE INSIDE OF THE CAR POSING A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY RISK. THE DOOR LATCH IS A PLASTIC PULL WHICH IS PART OF THE ONE-PIECE MOLDED PLASTIC DOOR PANEL. THE PLASTIC BEHIND OUR DOOR LATCH STARTED TO CRACK OVER TIME AND UPON A FAMILY MEMBER CLOSING THE DOOR AND THE DOOR PANEL COMING IN CONTACT WITH THE INDIVIDUAL'S LEG, THE DOOR LATCH COMPLETELY DETACHED FROM THE DOOR PANEL CAUSING IT TO FLOAT INSIDE THE DOOR CAVITY. THE DOOR LATCH THEN FELL APART AND THE ONLY WAY TO OPEN THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR IS TO REACH INSIDE THE HOLE IN THE CAVITY TO FIND WHAT THE DOOR LATCH WAS ATTACHED TO. HAVING THE DOOR LATCH ONLY SECURED TO THIN MOLDED PLASTIC OF THE DOOR PANEL IS A DESIGN...

THIS IS A VERY WELL DOCUMENTED PROBLEM AMONG OWNERS AND DEALERS FOR 2006 AND 2007 MODELS, AND NOT SURPRISINGLY BECAUSE THE HOUSING AND HINGE ARE MADE ENTIRELY OF PLASTIC, AND ARE VERY BRITTLE. AFTER A FEW YEARS OF USE THE PLASTIC STARTS TO CRACK AND THEN BREAK AWAY, AND THE INNER HANDLE WILL NOT FUNCTION. THIS IS PARTICULARLY TRUE IN TROPICAL CLIMATES. THIS SHOULD BE AN EASY FIX, BUT UNFORTUNATELY IN ORDER TO REPLACE THE HANDLE YOU NEED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE DOOR PANEL. MY 2006 JEEP COMMANDER'S ROOF IS RUSTING. I NOTICED IT IN MARCH 2010. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHO SAID IT WAS BECAUSE OF BIRD POOP AND WILL ONLY PAY HALF THE MONEY TO GET IT FIXED. I'VE NOTICED THAT MY JEEP IS A MONEY HUNGRY MACHINE. I BOUGHT IT BECAUSE I HAD PREVIOUSLY OWNED A JEEP CHEROKEE LMT AND NEEDED SOMETHING BIGGER AND SAFER TO HAUL AROUND THE BOYS I NANNY. RECALL NOTICE FROM CHRYSLER. TOOK COMMANDER INTO SHOP FOR REPAIR. AFTER 4 HOURS, TECHNICIAN STATED THAT UNABLE TO DOWNLOAD PROGRAM FROM CORPORATE COMPUTER TO FIX. NEED TO BRING CAR BACK LATER. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME FOR A RECALL, AND OUR CAR HAS BEEN IN THERE A TOTAL OF 4 TIMES FOR SAFETY ISSUES SUCH AS BROKEN SEAT BELTS. IT HAS BEEN THERE A NUMBER OF OTHER VISITS, STARTING AT 2555 MILES, FOR DEFECTIVE WINDSHIELD MOUNT, DEFECTIVE GAS FILL LINE MOUNT, AND DEFECTIVE WINDSHIELD WIPER FLUID PUMP. PREVIOUS HAZARDS WERE HANDLED, BUT RESULTED IN A GOOD NUMBER OF DAYS OF AT LEAST 6 HOUR SERVICES. NOW, AFTER 4 HOURS, THIS SERVICE IS NOT COMPLETED AND I HAVE TO BRING THE CAR BACK AGAIN. *TR
